huh. maybe it just can't go too low with the value ('cause the fans didn't do much when I put them at 40/45 or something even when the laptop was at 50 C)

I dunno. I haven't messed with the advanced bios much (no need to)

Same here. Complains no drivers installed and looks like on 16 bit colours. What will happen if we go into the bios again and maintain the settings at dGPU for a few boots?

Apparently my 2nd replacement set has some issues with the brightness level while on battery and audio stuttering. It's going back for the 3rd replacement.

have you tested the brightness thing multiple times?

There's a good chance that was just switchable graphics being a mess (it's not perfected yet). The screen's gamma stuff can break horribly while swapping and booting the computer (which happens if you turn the computer on while on battery and your last gpu you were on was the ati gpu).

audio stuttering I don't have much on. If you mean audio cutting in and out that might be the power saving stuff built into the drivers or the beats(IDT) control panel and it needs to be turned off.

HP rep verified by swapping HDDs and SSDs. The brightness levels varying(actually I've also seen complaints here on NBR) is confirmed to be a hardware issue, otherwise they will not oblige to another replacement (in Singapore).

    ah. alright.

I get a brightness issue once in a blue moon but it is not enough to make me wanna send my computer back (also the radiance screen would mysteriously vanish most likely)

Can someone try this on other Envys, like 13, 15, 17, and let us know the result?

I guess we were looking for an option to change the temperature value that the fans kick in at, because the default setting has them cycling on and off every 10 seconds while on the internet or whatever(?).

I tried changing the fan temperature values in the advanced BIOS but it didn't do anything so I changed it back.

My Envy runs pretty cool. It rarely gets warm, even under stress (CAD, Photoshop, games) and never too warm to be uncomfortable to use. My last laptop got too hot to have on your lap comfortably. HP did a great job with the cooling on these Envy 14s, but the fan cycling thing is a bit annoying and it feels like there's room for maneuver. With the standard temp settings at 55/70/85/100(?) it would have been great to change it to 70 minimum and have the fans off for light work. I suppose we're guessing that just changing the values a bit would have no adverse effects. Would be nice to try, huh?

we sorta discovered that changing that stuff doesn't seem to do much/anything (at least moving them down to the lower 40s/45 didn't cause the fan to kick into overdrive while at that temperature or higher than that temperature.

    so I dunno)

It's kinda surprising that the temperature values are there to be adjusted, and yet changing them doesn't seem to do anything.

When you saw it did you think "Yes, finally!" and then... :nah:

something like that. though my fan doesn't bug me much since I just leave it on "always on"

I kinda wanted to set it to go "full blown super fan" a bit earlier if I could so the top right doesn't get so hot

    What are your temps o.o

I'm usually at around 55C on low fans, with the upper right at about 100F and the heatsink at around 110F

Sweet. Kind of useless to be honest but sweet nonetheless.

I would have loved to have the fan go to "super blower" mode around 80C instead of 100C..haha, but it's all good.

Even after playing games for hours, I never end up hitting 80C. Current fan settings should be fine IMO, unless your envy has some sort of problem...

nah that's what I get at too (maxing around 82-84 C or something if the game is DA:O and likes to leave the cpu at 100% utilization. forever. the end.)

it's not that big of a deal really, just sometimes would prefer if it stayed a bit lower.

    not really/not that I notice.

    'course I think I reach 84c more than 85c.

I'd have to just check stuff out with DA:O and cpu-z up at the same time (DA:O's been the only thing to make me reach those sorts of temps...I think).

'course that means spending 6 hours re-downloading DA:O from steam (28 gigs..damn steam)

Working on adding some features to Reil's.

If I can get it to work, you'll no longer need the special drivers to get click anywhere to work.

Kev007, does the battery life noticeably increase with HT off? Also, there seems to be 'two' places in the advance bios with Ht options...

Yes, there was a notable increase in battery life. When measured with BatteryBar, the power draw decreased by over 5 Watts. Initially power draw was ~25W, with HT off it was ~20W, but you should keep in mind that the TDP of an i7 processor is much higher than that of an i5 processor so YMMV.

Note: these measurements were measured inconsistently since I had was still fiddling with my Power Saver profile (mostly core parking and throttling thresholds). Once again, YMMV.

None at all. If you read around on the net, you'll see that many believe it is detrimental to performance unless you're utilizing all 8 threads (video rendering, for instance)
Game performance seems to be the same.

I've set the fan settings as high as they can go. But there is no difference in how the fan operates on any of the settings. It still runs on low above 40 C, ramps up to medium beyond 50, and on high some temperature after that.

Can anyone give me detailed info as to how to change when the fans kick in when I'm in the advanced BIOS? Even when my CPU usage is 10-15% with temperatures on the cores ranging from 30-45 Celsius, the fans seem to cycle, or just stay on medium

I figured this was unusual since temperatures within that range are relatively cool in the laptop world. My processor is the core i5480m.

BIOS > Advanced > Thermal Configuration > Platform Thermal Configuration

I think the values you're interested in are the low/medium fan threshold temperatures.

And what exactly would the 'low/medium fan threshold temperatures' be? The fans seem to cycle even when the temperatures are not high, or any cpu usage, and I want to stop that.

Exactly, your fans are cycling because of this setting.

You're straddling the temperature threshold line between low and medium fan speed. If you raise that temperature, then you'll keep your fans quiet.

I don't remember the default temperature settings, because I've changed mine.

Edit: it may also be fan off/fan low speeds. I don't know about that either, because I have an i7 that idles at around 50C at an 85F ambient. I have it set to be "low" up until 60C, then high at 75C.

One of the things disabling it does is disable Intel Turbo Boost dynamic overclocking.
