Specs on the compaq site say the 12 cell sticks out approx. 1/4 inch further than the standard 6 cell. What have you guys gotten as far as battery life with each?

Will a Hitachi travelstar 7k100 100GB 7200rpm drive work/fit in the v5000z? I found one for $186 from Newegg and am wondering if this would be a possible upgrade. The notebook I'm getting ready to buy will be a v5000z with: ML-40, 1 GB DDR333 from newegg and 256MB from HP, ati X200M 128MB, 15.4" bright option and hopefully the travelstar 7k100 100GB 7200rpm hard drive.

Also, is the Broadcom b/g speedbooster option from HP any good? I'm thinking about getting a linksys WRT54GL router and putting the DD-WRT firmware on it so I can enable speedbooster and increase the transmitting power.

    Any thoughts/experiences would be appreciated

The HD will work. I'd get one or two 1GB PC3200 Crucial SODIMMs. mwave.com should have the best price on both.

I've yet to hear from anyone who's managed to get Speedbooster to work. Better antennas are usually a better choice than increasing transmitting power.

What are the main differences between the dv5000z and the v5000z? The v5000z is much cheaper in price compared the the dv5000z on HP.com right now.

I read this whole thread and others but I could not find the key differences

On a side note, will either of these lappys w/ ML 40 and 128 200m be able to handle LOTR: Battle for middle earth 2?

For Compaq, no QuickPlay, no XP MCE, different colors, as of right now, shipping is charged for Compaq (NOT HP), and IIRC, no IR port.

to the folks wondering about which battery...

i'm about to buy the dv5000t myself, and figured out that i'd order just the one 6 cell now, and order the 12cell off the accessories list. with the rebate they're offering on the 12cell right now, it's just as cheap as buying another 6cell if that makes any sense. and i want the option of both.
