Is there a software to read temperature of cpu in dv5000z?
I use pcwizard, speedfan and MBmonitor, but they report HD temperature only.

Do not worry, I have exactly the same issue with my keybord. Now it is designed by Hp not compaq and they really do not care. I am very disapointed because of the quality and overall design. I hope it wont broke before I buy a new one.....

Just saw the DV5000 at a local Bestbuy yesterday and let me tell you this -- never, I mean NEVER buy this laptop if you're looking for good build quality. If you thought that the Toshibas were bad, wait until you see this. The laptop literally flexes when you pick it up. Not only that, it seems to be made out of cheap plastic too. Pales in comparison with the DV4000 series if you ask me.

In regards to the quality of the design/build, is it enough to make those who have bought one regret it? I went and looked at the dv5020z at Circuit City a few days ago and didnt notice a huge difference in it and the dv4000 from a cosmetic standpoint(but they did have them locked down so I couldnt pick up and actually handle them). But, after reading here, Im starting to have my doubts. So, do the pros outweigh the cons?
Im having a hard time finding a better value than this for $875:

    AMD Turion(TM) 64 ML-34 (1.8GHz/1MB L2 Cache)
    15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
    128MB ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/Hypermemory(TM)
    256MB DDR SDRAM (1x256MB)
40 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
    DVD+/-RW/R & CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer Support
    54g(TM) 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBoosterTM)
    6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

I have had my dv5000 since 1/19 and to me...its great!

    – Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition with SP2
    – AMD Turion(TM) 64 ML-32 (1.8GHz/512KB L2 Cache)
    – 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
    – 128MB ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/Hypermemory(TM)
    – 1.2GB DDR2 SDRAM (1x1GB - 1x256MB)
    – 80 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
    – LightScribe 8x DVD+/-RW&CD-RW Combo w/DL
    – 54g(TM) 802.11a/b/g WLAN & Bluetooth
    – 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

from reading some of these other posts, I dont find the loose screen (mine is solid), loose or whatever keyboard (all these consumer notebooks are the same). The layout is nice. It has a clean feel - the touchpad is a tad small...but its a laptop! (get a desktop mouse or adjust the touchpad tracking faster and its more than fine). The speakers suck...but again, its a laptop! I have never been a big fan of HP laptops or computers, but this lil ditty is a workhorse. :amd64:

I have pictures - not sure how to post them

I would like to see you pictures, but I'm a newbye, I don't know how to.

Altec lansing speakers are good, but I don't find line-in. There is only mic in. The driver don't show how to change mic->line-in.
Strange, I want to link my tape recorder to convert cassette to mp3.

The answer is Yes! You wont find better performance for this price. The speakers, keybord and touchpad and overall design sucs. I am pointing to that because I have background in mech. engr. The other things for this price are just unbeatable.
If You want to have a very powerful laptop for up to 1k$ in my opinion is the number 1. I spent a long time for searching. There is one very good thing in the design.... Yopu have access to both memory modules from the back! In V2000 I think You would have to take it apart. Here, there is easy access to both RAM modules hard drive and something else which I am not sure what is. I bought 1GB Crucial DDR400 CL3 and it started from the first time according to the spec.

Has anyone else tried the 512mb PC3200 OCZ ram on this notebook? I just received 2X512MB yesterday and was unable to run it on this notebook. It loaded up fine and the bios reads the ram size correctly but as soon as Windows loads up, I would get a BSOD and the notebook restarts. I’ve upgraded the bios to f.24 but the same error still occurs. Is there anything else I can do to make the ram work? Maybe clock the speed lower but I don’t see that option in the bios. Thanks in advance

    Burningsnow-

I would use www.photobucket.com to host your pictures. Once you have created an account there (free), you can upload your pictures. Then, each picture will have a link, which you will post over here in this format.
    Code:
    [IMG]www.photobucket.com/yourpictures[/IMG]
You can copy that line of code directly (with the image tags) off the photobucket webpage.

Wow, lots of great info here.
I was looking into getting the DV5000Z. If I customize one from hp.com, can I get both wireless and ethernet connections? It seems I need to choose one or the other? But I noticed Costco has pre-configured laptops with both included.

Edit: Oops, sorry, looked a little closer and the HP site has the option "54g(TM) 802.11a/b/g WLAN" for $25 that includes both wireless and ethernet.

So far I know the OCZ 1GB PC 3200 is working with this laptop. I have one installed in my laptop now. In addition Corsair 1GB pc3200 will not work. There are people that have used 1GB PQI pc3200 and it works fine.
Anyway, HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL. TODAY IS CHINESE NEW YEAR!!! :D

All, i determined that my keyboard also flexes near teh arrow keys. I looks like teh black layer to which the keyboard keys attach to is not supported by whatever is below the arrow keys, leaving a small gap. The only solution i can think of, if HP does not address the issue is to put some high-quality 3M adhesive between the vestigeal key below 'end' and the side of the notebook. This will prevent the flex on that side of the notebook. Also, the adhesive can be removed if needed.

Regarding RAM, I have 2 Corsair 1GB VS1GSDS400 PC3200 sticks. It worked teh first time, but it is unsettling to hear that others are having problems. Could teh Corsair be incompatible with certain AMD chip speeds or could notebooks have shipped without the latest firmware updates?

Finally, the hinge does seem loose. On a sturdy, heavy table it is OK, otherwise it does shake when typing. I am trying to see if a 'homemade' solution can be developed to prevent this backward flex - by providing a counterforce for example.

WOW... I called HP to get an old version of this laptop bios. Look what thaty told me about memory specs. o_O
*****: This model of Presario supports PC2700 memory modules.
*****: I am afraid that it will not support PC3200 but in some cases even if you install it may work but downgrades the speed and works at a speed of PC2700.

    I'll keep you guys updated...

I ran the Memtest program on the 2 sticks of OCZ PC3200 512MB and it came back with a ton of errors. Does this mean the memory is bad or the V5000 machine doesn't support it? Should I exchange it back to Newegg for the same type of memory or return it and buy another brand? Thanks.

It could be either, but given that others have reported success with OCZ one or both of the sticks is probably bad. Test them individually. Sometimes memory only fails in pairs.

If you do send them both back, see if Newegg will credit you towards a single stick of 1GB Crucial PC3200. There's no advantage to two sticks of memory on Turions other than cost and someday you may want 2GB.

I received 2 sticks of 512mb OCZ from Newegg and one of them was bad. I had put both in and the machine wouldn't go past the Compaq boot screen. For now I have a 256 OEM and the working 512mb OCZ in and have sent the defective stick back to Newegg for exchange.

I ran memtest on the stick that works and had no problems. It is PC3200 by the way.

doh, I wish I had known that AMD products don't use dual channel RAM such that there would be benefit from running two sticks. I probably would have purchased just 1 stick of 1gb instead. I doubt I'll need 2gb anyhow and from what I recall, there have been several threads and articles regarding 1gb vs 2gb performance that showed 2gb didn't really provide a speed advantage that justified the extra expense and that you're better off putting that money toward a better harddrive.

That is strange -- I ran CPU-Z and the FSB speed came up as 200 MHz and the memory speed also came up as 200 MHz. Actually other users who have the V2000Z (upto ML-37) have DDR400 memory that works well. Wonder which versions of BIOS are stable - I am not sure the Compaq tech support can be fully trusted - I remember a thread here about Compaq support saying that DDR2 support was available on the Turion.

    Hi BurningSnow,

Please, please put your pictures on or anybody with DV5000 n V5000Z. We'd really like to see it. I am at lost now with the bad review on their designs. I certainly am worried if they provide us with cheap plastic quality for the casing. Sigh, Hp sucks at design......

Please, please put your pictures on or anybody....

I'm uploading pix of my new one as we speak. I have to say, I'm not noticing the problems other have mentioned with my v5000z. Although it is obviously built of plastic, the design doesn't seem cheap or flimsy. Its not MacBook pro, but I paid under a grand for it as well.

Hi thank you so much for providing us with these pics, please tell us more your experience. Are you sure the hinge is not going to be broken anytime soon or bla bla bla...? Well that one thousand dollar means a lot to me. If this baby suck, crying won't be any good for me, LOL :p

any dead pixel?... where do you buy it? HP, any tax?

    many thanks dude

Some quick answers to your ?'s. The hinges seem sturdy enough. If they're like my evo N800c, there's metal underneath there. No dead pixels (at least that I can notice). Got it from hpshopping.com through the Academic Purchase Plan. No tax.

I'll be doing a real review later in the week, as my grad work has me kinda busy atm.

    Hey Taylormade and Mech_E

Wow dude, thank you very much for the feedback. I certainly that the hinger will last for a decade or more, LOL. I've seen enough complain from some people in the past regarding bad pixel and bla bla bla. We're not paying new to get bad screen, anyway.

Yes, please shed some reviews for us. That'll be great. My temp conclusion is the only mem that works for this lappy is OCZ... not Kingston OEM chip anymore?

Btw, 4 months ago, I can see in HP website that we can submit direct suggestion to their CEO or send them grievances. Do you notice that it's gone now, or am I mistaken. I'd like to give suggestion n request for higher native res....

This is my setup as well.
    This machine is solid built!
    Fast is an understatement.
Our speakers are outstanding, really can be loud and clear.
Ordered my 1st unit, gave it to the 'roughneck' of the company, holding up well.
We are so impressed, ordered 11 additional units, one for each employee :)
Extremely well built, easy to use, fast...
A nice price for home or business.

Got my dv5000z yesterday, my initial impressions: Lot bigger than I thought it'd be! Guess I should have checked the stores first. Good thing I'm using this more as a desktop replacement than a laptop, in my opinion it's not too portable. Overall, I'm satisfied with the purchase.

Pros - nice for under 1k(950 after 75refund) (ml40+256ram+80g5400hd+dvdburner+wirelessb/g), looks pretty solid.

Cons - brightview screen viewing angle is weak (good when dead on), not for gaming, the blue led lights on the keyboard are rather bothersome - anyway to turn those off? No way to easily turn off the mouse tablet (had to disable in the control panel).

Put a 1gig pc3200 ocz stick in with no problems.

Haven't had success connecting to my linksys (WRT54G)wireless router yet. Had a lot easier time with my dell latitude. Anybody have any similar troubles?

I read some stuff about amd processor not always at full speed when connected to a powercord, can anyone shed some light on that? Thx.

No problems yet, I'm going to do a memory upgrade, going with 2700. Will let you guys know how it turns out.

My DV5000Z should get here monday, asuming I decide to keep it and not send it back for a V4000T I'll write a review up on it.

    Hey guys,

Was super glad to find this thread. I have been considering the v5000z for some time, but I was hard-pressed to find any pictures of it anywhere. HP is running an exellent $150 instant savings (exp: 3/4/06) + $50 MIR (exp: 2/28/06) on this baby now (free wireless too), I think I am going to bite the bullet and go for it. I have a few questions for the owners:

1 I saw it posted in this thread that you have access to both memory slots in the bottom of the computer, is this true? I thought that in AMD notebooks one was accessible and the other was below the keyboard... Also, how much of a performance advantage to you get from PC3200 vs PC2700? I ask because 3200 is alot more expensive. Oh, and could somebody give me a reccomendation on whether or not this RAM'll work (cheapest 1GB on the egg): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820221205

    2. For anyone who bought the BrightView option, how do you like it? Is there much glare from sunlight/etc.? Also, I heard that the glossy screens attract dust and hairs like the plague, is this true? I was thinking of going for the matte finish, but so many people are saying that BrightView works well, maybe I should go for it.

    3. For those who have the 12-cell battery, does it bother you that it protrudes out from the bottom of the computer? How many hours do you get out of a charge of the 12-cell? 6-cell? I really was considering getting the 12-cell untill I saw that it stuck out, then I thought about getting dual 6-cells, but if there is a big bat-life advantage I will go for the 12-cell.

Thanks a bunch for answering, and if/when I get mine, I will definately post a review (uncapable of taking pictures though, no digital camera...). Thanks again!

There is some glare from "stray" lighting. In my case I immediately knew that my v5000z's screen is the Brightview one because I could see the glossy coating on the screen, and the stray lighting reflecting off the screen. For example, I was working in my office, and someone walked behind me, and I could see him walking past on my screen. Oh well.

I like the 12 cell battery. Longer laptop operating time when not plugged into the mains, and I think the protrusion creates an elevation off the table, so maybe it helps the heatsink fan built on the bottom of the laptop dissipate heat faster? Just my conjecture though.

andrew11: buy one or two Crucial PC3200 1GB SODIMMs from mwave.com. I put two in my dv8000z without trouble. I don't know why Newegg's price for the same RAM is so much higher.

I always buy the biggest battery offered.

It is true that You have acces to both memory slots from the back. They are one on another. I also bought the crucial 1GB pc3200 from mwave and it work perfectly and gives some increase in performance (~6%). The screen could be much better... The angle view is very narrow... Watch movies sitting at the front of it.... Again my opinion about the quality of material used for the frame is drastictly low. It looks very compact but the hinge looks pretty weak. The keybord flexes around left rightcorner. It does not flex as the whole piece... as somebody said.. just the keybord. Aslo the wireless preformance could be much better.
