CompUSA-Vista Anytime Upgrade disk

I would recommend that anybody wanting to buy an Anytime Upgrade disk not to get it from CompUSA.

I ordered my disk way back on the 16th and still have not received it (today is October 4th). I called them yesterday and after waiting 24 minutes (Yes, I timed it), I finally talked to someone who said that these disks come from an outside vendor, and this outside vendor will only use US mail. There is no way to track it and no guarantee that it will ever show up.

He said that my only options were to re-order and wait up to 14 days or just cancel altogether. I re-ordered because I don't know of anybody else who sells these.

Needless to say, I will never order anything from CompUSA again..even a $5 disk.

 

Weird, cuz I got one from them and it shipped the very next day, got to my house 3 days later.

 

Great..(sarcasm)..I ordered mine on 9/25 and haven't seen it yet. My understanding is compusa uses digital river. Microsoft has a link to order it from them as an alternative.

 

Could you post the Microsoft link?

I think I'll just order another one from Microsoft if it's possible. I'll just cut my losses. $5 isnt worth the fight anymore, I just want to clean install my new laptop...

Thanks for the link. It looks like they're $7 from Microsoft, but I'd rather pay $7 and actually get it within a month, then pay $5 and maybe someday get it.

 

Argonaut, patience dude, I ordered mine the 15th (sept), and it came today, it should be reaching u within a few days. Remember it takes 10-14 business days. It should definately reach u by monday

 

Same problem. The 1st one never arrived. After a very long wait the rep was cool. Apparently it is a known problem for CompUSA (the rep said so). The rep requested a 2nd one be shipped and 15 days later it arrived. No wonder Comp USA is having trouble, they lost money on my order.

 

Yeah... I was getting ticked when I ordered mine and it took more than 3 weeks to receive the DVD. I called them more than 20 times and they told me it was shipped via USPS and couldn't track it, which made me go crazy.

 

It is a good thing I stumbled across this thread because I was getting ready to call them up and ask them where my disk is. I guess I will be patient although if I knew it was going to take them so long, I wouldn't order it in the first place.

 

Guess its an issue recently, i ordered mine last month and got it 2 days later.

Oh and a side note, u can use it as an OEM installation disk, i had a 32bit Home Premium i purchased from microcenter for 80 bucks (they wouldn't sell me the 64 bit for the sale price). Used the 64 bit anytime upgrade i got from CompUSA and it installed the 64 bit Home Premium with no problems on my newbuild desktop (usin the same CD key as the 32 bit one so vista keys are universal between 64 and 32). Activated and everything

 

Tsaijo I have a question or two. Did you do a clean install or did you upgrade? I was wondering whether you can just upgrade a 32 bit os to a 64 without a clean install.

Also, would the vista key which appears in the bottom of my laptop (vista home premium) work when installing the 64 bit os?

The reason why I want to switch to a 64 bit os is to take advantage of my 4 gb of ram (only 3 recognized under 32 bit). I will however have to say goodbye to my tv tuner as there are no drivers for it for a 64 bit os.

I am experiencing the same thing, and I got the same explanation.

 

Did anyone order a Anytime Disc from MS? I ordered mine from there and am just curious if anyone knows how long it will take, since MS doesn't give a estimate or anything. If they shipped it within a day or two by USPS I would assume I'd get it within 5 days...

 

Hmm it is still not here, though yesterday was a USPS holiday...

 

Please let us know when it comes in. I called Compusa yesterday and they have changed their estimates on delivery times to 10-14 business days. While this could just be a line, I will call them back (per their suggestion) on Friday if I haven't seen it. Supposedly it shipped on 9/26. If you have success I may have to order one from MSFT.

 

When I ordered mine it took 11 days. I did call and the compusa rep said that there is delayed shipping on these.. They are generated from a third party that they use and they don't have any control when they ship. But Compusa will generally ship another one if you don't get it within two weeks time. They do eventually ship but take some time. Can't beat the price so I am not complaining.

It took 3 weeks to receive mine, but I got it nonetheless.

 

I got mine in 4 days from CompUSA when Lenovo was too cheep to include disks for the OS I paid them for.

Then I bought the HP and the original install disks were included. Nicely done HP

 

Update:
I called again yesterday and they said the system shows it shipped on October 1st. I ordered it September 16th.... So, they waited 15 days before they even decided to ship it!!!! Unbelievable.

Of course, there's no way to track it and today is the 10th, so I could be waiting till next week. That would make it an entire month from the time I ordered until I have it in my hand.

I will NEVER do business with CompUSA again. I realize that it's a $5 DVD, but I think it speaks volumes about how they feel about their customers. I'm just gald I didn't spend more money there.

 

what model did you buy from hp? Was it a already built computer or was it customized

Sorry I only did a clean install for my new built desktop. I originally purchased the anytime disk to do a clean install of Vista Ultimate x64 on my dv9500t to get rid of the HP Bloatware. I just used the sticker key to input and activate, but i hear after you activate it you gotta call up microsoft and explain why you're reactivating. The clean install thread has ABR prog that bypasses this by savin your information, i dont know if that'll work or not for 32 to 64

 

Yes, it works for both 32 and 64 bit. If you have 32bit, run the abr backup, then restore on 64 bit, it will work fine. Also vice-versa.

 

I wouldn't blame CompUSA for that. As many people have pointed out, they have no control over the actually shipping of the order as they are just the middle man. I believe they have changed their estimates now to be in line with what is actually taking place.

 

I absolutely blame CompUSA. CompUSA is the company that I, as a customer, ordered from. The website said to allow 1-2 days to ship NOT 15.

They should have called or sent me an email or something...anything. It's bad business to leave customers waiting a month for their orders without a word.

Nice!!!! Now if anyone knew whether this procedure would work with an upgrade instead of a clean install this would answer my question.

 

I do not know if it will work with an upgrade. I think it will not (at least ABR will not).

 

Be really patient. My first disk arrived today in the mail. According to the date stamp on the mailing label, the order should have been mailed Sept. 5, 2007. It arrived Oct. 10, 2007. I suspect the darn thing was lost in the warehouse, USPS while slow, is not that bad.

 

You can do a clean install with an upgrade disk if that is what you mean.

 

No I was asking whether you can upgrade to a 64 bit from a 32 bit os with the licence that you have under your laptop (from 32 home premium to 64 bit home premium.)

 

I assume you can at least using the clean install with abr method as that is what I did in the opposite direction for Ultimate 64 to 32. I don't know if there are license restrictions that would prevent that legally but it should be possible practically.

 

I went from 32 bit home premium to 64 bit home premium with the ABR back up utility. No problems. I did this with a windows vista disc that i got on torrent and burnt to disc

Apparently, your post seems to imply that you don't even own a vista disk.

How is it piracy? I own a copy of windows vista. I bought my laptop from hp.com and thus I payed for and own the copy of vista that came pre-loaded.

 

I'm not convinced this time around that downloading a Vista disc is piracy. The way Microsoft is handling licensing this time around is SIMILAR (but not the same!) as shareware. The fact that you can get the Anytime Upgrade DVD for $5 seems to indicate this. In that case, you are only paying for the physical media, and obviously not a license. The license is the serial number and the activation.

 

I thought that my previous post might have helped out those people that are waiting for discs that don't seem like they are ever going to come.

I'll take a glance through the forum rules so I dont cause any more trouble

 

IN that case how hard is it to copy one of those discs?

I ordered from MS and I haven't gotten the disc yet. Its been about two weeks.

I too agree that downloading the Anytime Upgrade disc is not piracy. If you have a legal activation key, I mean MS is giving them out for free, minus the shipping. Still it is a sticky situation...

 

Mine took forever, even though I received shipping confirmations. I had to call three times to get it straighned out. They claimed it was a "download", but upon further invistigation, they finally shipped the disk(s).

I guess I am just persistent. I just called Compusa and they said it should have been here already (shipped 9/26), so they will send out a new one. Just got an automated email for shipment on the order. If you haven't gotten yours call again. That said it is just starting the clock over again. If anyone has rec'd theirs from MSFT directly, could you let us know the time frame for receiving.

 

I ordered the Vista Anytime Upgrade disc from Microsoft on the 12th so I'll keep you guys posted.

 

I ordered 9/30 and it supposedly shipped 10/1.

My notebook arrived on 10/12 and I already had a sealed retail Vista disc that I didn't want to open, but after reading about all the delays, I decided to unseal it an do the clean install ASAP.

Anyway, my Vista Anytime Upgrade disc arrived today, 10/15, just over two weeks since I ordered. So, I probably could have waited a few more days and kept my retail disc sealed, if I had known.

My dvd from Compusa just came in today and the package has a ship date of 9/26/2007 on it.

 

Ok, on the disc itself it states, do not lend or make illegal copies of this software. It also states the anytime upgrade disc is not for resale except with original PC So technically speaking, Compusa should not be selling these separately. I think MS just states that to cover there arses with their OEMS. For instance, HP does not want people doing clean installs.. period. They even scolded me for even bringing that up with them when I asked. HP gets money for all that bloat if you know what I mean. So, MS states in print don't copy it etc.. but in reality they could care less.. as long as you pay for the lincense. You can always buy a upgrade on the MS site as well. But for clean install purposes, MS says the disc is not for resale and not to copy.. But nevertheless, compusa sells it.

As for copying, its possible yes. And as far as I know, MS has never used or probably ever will use disc copy protection on their OS discs. They relie on validation protection. The only thing MS cares about is that they have their OS on as many systems as possible and that you pay for it.

I will also add that I saw one web site where somebody received a dv6500t back in May that included a anytime upgrade disc. I believe in June or July HP decided not to provide this anymore.. they want you to have their bloat. And they probably tell their advertisers that too. So if you are thinking about calling them up (HP) and asking for them to send the anytime upgrade disc.. forget it.. I tried tried tried and they got mad and said clean installs are not allowed.
