As long as there aren't any tamper stickers, and you don't muck it up, no one would know.

Has anyone confirmed the use of 4GB (2x2GB) on the C714nr w/ F33 Bios?

I would like to go ahead and do 4gb in dual channel rather than a 2+1 :(

    Anyone? :D

    Got this from here....
    http://forum.clubedohardware.com.br/review-compaq-presario/514277?p=2894435

    Used Google Translation

Why is that hard for Compaq to fix?! They have other models where they provided an updat BIOS to correct the 4GB problem. Anytime you talk to someone there, you can never get in touch with someone who can look into it.

I have 2 + 1 on Vista 64 right now on F.31 working fine. With 2X2 I Couldnt get it to boot.
Will update to F.33 this week and let you know if any different with 4GB. :(
If anyone else has tried with Vista rather than XP above, please post. I doubt outcome will be different.

hope it gets fixed. i know the c700 is now discontinued so it doesn't look great for bios updates in the future. but it seems to be purely bios related

I have a C714NR and I was wanting to, a. upgrade my ram to 3gb or 4(been answered already)
    b. Add Bluetooth to my laptop, and
    c. add a media card reader

Bluetooth I have seen done on other laptops, but I wasn't sure if anyone has done it with these laptops.

I know that the C714TU(I googled) has a media card reader in that slot below the single USB port on the left hand side. I don't know where I can find this part(Or even if I can without the motherboard) and if I would be able to solder this into mine.
Has anyone done or seen this before?

marshythekid, both would require you to do some hacking. the media card reader is part of a different motherboard from what I gather, so I don't think you can just get a part. But since the spot is there, you can rig something for sure.

As for ram, I just got a 2gb stick. I tried a 2+1 config, and the 2gb stick on the inside resulted in bsods. On the outside, it's fine.

    About 4GB issue ...

You may try Ram modules of 2GB 256Mx64.

Im not sure if it will work but as from Intel specification update http://www.intel.com/Assets/PDF/specupdate/316274.pdf , page 18 section 5.1 table 9, its the only option for 4GB on this chipset.

    Could anyone test it?

    I have a C799tu with a T2390 cpu, is it possible to upgrade this to a T8100?

Also where do I get windows XP drivers from if I want to downgrade?
And is it possible to upgrade to vista 64 bit straight from vista 32 bit home premium?

    greets everyone...

i receive today my new compaq c766la...with a celeron 550 processor skt P and the Crestline GM965 chipset...I read this thread and i don't understand some lines...

drmega updates your processor, but they have a pentium dual core...with a Bios ready for that...The Celeron 550 is a Single Core, and don't have set's ... also is a "Virtualization Technology", or "Processor C4 State"...

i don't know if these options are necessary for the processor runs... and i don't know too if hp makes a latest bios revision for recognize the steppings of the c2d's in bios with single core's builds.

    If that's possible...?

    Best Regards.

you should have the same motherboard. so it's as simple as upgrading the bios if you need to and dropping in a different socket p that's supported by gm965.

DarkFox, all you have to do, is replace the cpu with a C2D and you will be fine, or a bios update and then a penryn. Don't worry about current setup configs.

    Hi,

    1st time post here.

I have some question to ask.

My notebook model is compaq presario C778tu.

    1. I had check my motherboard bios using cpu-z, it stated that is F.32 version, do i need to flash this bois to F33?

    2. I consider upgrade my ram to 3GB, is that any performance issue on Dual Channnel? Which one combo is better to install (2 x 1GB ram), or (1 x 1GB and 1 x 2GB)? Is the Kingston brand ok?

    3. Also consider to upgrade the internal harddisk, can this Seagate Momentus 5400.4 ST9250827AS,SATA300/NCQ,250 GB, 8 MB Cache,5400 rpm suitable for my notebook?

The first pic is obviously the motherboard. The circular cutout is where the fan goes, processor right above it

Second pic is the top of the case that the screen it attached to, nothing really important

3rd is the base of the case, you can see the fan and usb ports (bottom right)

4th is the power bar the keyboard and the cd and hard drive

5th is the screen and the laptop processor heat sink,

As usual there are lots and lots of little cables and ribbons to unplug, but if you go slowly and take your time its actually not that bad. This is the first laptop I have ever taken apart, but I'm very familiar with computers. The pics are taken with a blackberry because at the time my camera is nowhere to be found. If anyone needs more detail on any of the pics let me know. I did benchmarks before the processor install and will do some after to see the gains.

    Hello,

    I have a 2008 Compaq Presario C762NR.

I saw on this thead that a update will increase GMA X3100 graphics memory from 256MB to 384 or 351MB?

I have BIOS Update F.33, updated from F.32 when I got it.

Also, will 2.5GB RAM work? I'm thinking about getting 2GB stick and use existing 512MB stick with it. Is that good? thanks in advance.

For me, 2.5GB worked fine (although at first there were some errors, probably caused by me not plugging it in correctly). But note that on the first page it says the 2GB stick has to be in the inner slot (furthest from you). For me, it only worked the other way around (nearest to me).

Does anyone know if this will accept the T9300 or T9500 Penryn's? (T8100 & T8300 are OK I think I read somewhere). And does anyone else find the trackpad a bit strange (not picking up scrolling mainly)?

Thanks, I'll do that then. Is it true that if I upgrade my RAM, the BIOS will unlock the total video memory for X3100? because I found official spec sheets off HP.com of my model and it contains 351MB of VRAM, it's just locked up because I currently only have 1GB and Vista needs the most resource as possible? until I upgrade it to more memory? (theory).

Also, does anyone have a good place to go to for the best "basic" Core 2 Duo processor that could work in this notebook? I'm not looking to spend a lot of money, I just want something that has a little more oomph than the Pentium DC. Thanks.

I think one of the bios updates increases the maximum vram to 351mb, though I didn't pay much attention before, and I updated the bios at the same time as the memory. I'm not sure the VRAM gives any performance difference. Sadly the T8100/T8300 are still relatively expensive at the moment. Even on ebay used chips go for ~100GBP. As I said before I don't know if T9300/T9500 work with it, but they'd be more also. Check it out on Google.

As for the RAM sticks, I'm sure there's a general handling guide for RAM around here somewhere. Specific instructions are in the manuals at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3561968&lang=en&

I have a C717NR and as of lastnight downloaded the F.34 BIOS onto my laptop. It said nothing about being able to use additional RAM in the description, but i'd love to be able to run another 1gb, so how can I be certain this BIOS update will allow me to do so?

I don't know if you can replace it, but i doubt it would be cooler. It would probably be hotter in fact. It shouldn't be shutting down, are you covering the air vents?

I'm trying to figure out how to update my Intel Video BIOS for Intel GM965 Integrated Video Card on my notebook. I've always been curious about this because I've read it can sometimes increase VRAM and performance. I just recently updated my Video Card to GMA 15.11.4.64.1591 (64-bit) (Nov 2008) for Intel X3100 256MB (I've read places my card supports 384MB but needs a BIOS update from HP or Intel). I downloaded the .zip file the 2nd time and just noticed there are vBIOS updates for 965, g3x, g4x and gm965. Mine is GM965 and my vBIOS is [1533 PC 14.27 8/28/07 09:49:31] according to GPU-Z 0.2.8. Is there a way to update it? A thorough tutorial would be appreciated :)

After a year of faithful service, my C700 has no sound - the hardware cannot be detected. Probably something has broken inside and I'll take it to a shop to get it fixed. Could any fellow posters be kind enough to suggest what I might need to buy? Do i need a sound card? are there any better ones around.
Any help for this newbie would be much appreciated!
    Thanks

I don't know what to do :-(.

Why is it that this thread was active, 7-8 pages of great info....now here are some not so well versed people wanting to do the same things but need a little advice, and not a single reply from any of the original posters? What is the point of messageboards is the OP's don't answer questions for us newbies?

Oddly enough DrOmega has been on IM for the past two days now, but hasn't been replying to IM's. I'd still like to know if my computer is capable of being upgraded to 3-4gb's and how this whole Vista-64 upgrade thing works w/ using the stock reg key.

Borrow a 64 bit version of your OS, either Basic, Premium, or Ultimate, I believe I've heard that they are all available on the same disk. I had a Premium OEM x64 in my case. Load it as if were your 32 bit version, and use your original 32 bit Key that came w/your system, when the Key is called for. I don't know if the Basic version is upgradeable to the 64 bit, since I've never done it w/that one. You may have to chase down some 64 bit drivers, no different than if you had loaded the 32 bit one.

I've upgraded all my 32 bit Vista Premium systems, three (3) of them, using just one (1) 64 bit OEM Premium disk, and using the original 32 bit keys that came w/the systems.

With the Compaq C751NR I had, which I gave to my sister as a gift, I could only run 3 gb max, if I remember right. I loaded the 64 bit version of Vista Premium on it, using it's original 32 bit Key, and it ran, and still runs fine.

After sending back my Presario C793TU to service center for 3 times, my overheating problem finally solved. It is due to the poor contact between heatsink and processor. The thermapaste is too thick.

Also, the DVD writer also failed me. Sometime it cannot boot up or die after waking up from sleeping mode. So I paid the service center another visit

    check it out folks:

-c700 SERIES NOTEBOOKS WILL ONLY SUPPORT 3GB MAX IN 32BIT OR 64 BIT
-BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN UPGRADING THE PROCESSOR AS IN CWCHAN'S CASE
THE SYSTEM CAN OVER HEAT, AND RUIN THE BOARD ALL TOGETHER.
-BIOS UPDATES DO INCREASE VIDEO MEMORT SIZES
-667MHZ RAM WHICH IS PC5300 IS RECOMMENDED WITH THIS LAPPY

I know i've been gone a while sorry guys, but I'm back and working on a HP G50 & Compaq Cq 50 thread which are the same notebooks actually. Any questions just post em.

Fun little fact for anyone who wants to increase the memory in their 717NR. While I did the BIOS upgrade via the recommendations from this thread, it in fact was not needed. My laptop is now running 3gb and running much quicker than the previous 2gb it had before hand. I'm curious to see if 4gb would work or not :)

I was about to do the BIOS upgrade to my gf's laptop, and just decided to see if it'd work ok w/o the BIOS change first...which it did. She's much happier she can surf MySpace at lightning speed ;)

I got the Kingston 4gb kit (2x2mb sticks) at www.buy.com for $35 shipped.

I have my laptop setup on the max power settings, and it's always hot to the touch and the fan appears to always be on fullspeed. My gf can lay hers (basic settings) on the bed w/o issue...mine will shutoff within a few minutes from being chocked of cool air. I wish it didn't run so hot, but lower the power setting also slows it down, so i'm stuck either way. Overclocking the CPU or upgrading it would melt it for sure!

Well, would you want to have to check the same thread over and over again and answer the same questions over and over again for the rest of your life? I know I wouldn't.
A lot of people may have also moved on to different laptops. It's the way of geekdom. :p

You don't have to come back and keep checking it at all. Once a post is replied on this thread, I automatically get emailed. The original poster who created the thread should expect at least some questions since he originated it, threw out information, facts, etc....the thread isn't that old. He may have moved on, but i'm still an owner, and along w/ many other. The only reason I found this thread is from a simple Google search, and it was the first on the list....so of course I was interested. From my replies though, I was able to speak w/ him over IM and get my questions answered, then I shared my results here. People may not have replied, but if someone else benefitted from what I added, then i'm happy.
