    Betty!!!
You got the best deal in the entire market. I wish i could have waited.
I might get out of school early today to catch up with FEdX people.
Also i will buy the 6 cell battery. Cause the 12 cell looks ugly.
I might call the customer service for a discount on 6 cell.
Casey, how much rebate you got for the 6 cell???
Tell you more when i get my V2000.

Before I placed my final order, I called HP because I ordered the laptop yesterday though through APP purchase program. The first time I called a sales associate to see if I can apply this coupon; they said they could apply it probably to the cost at if I took 10%. He kept me on hold for the longest time to ask his supervisor and still didn't get back to me, so I hung up. This time, I called and asked a customer service. The customer representative was able to apply the 10% after the APP price. I'm tempted to call a third time just to make sure because the customer representative sounded very unethusiastic and because he said the discount won't show up on the invoice; you'll be charged for the APP price and then a credit will be applied back to your credit card equaling the 10% discount.

    So, here's what I got

    Compaq Presario V2000 series customized
    - Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition with SP2
    - Intel(R) Pentium(R) M Processor 745 (1.8 GHz)
    - 14.0" WXGA BrightView Widescreen(1280x768)
    - Intel(R) Extreme Graphics with productivity ports
    - 1.0GB DDR SDRAM (2x512MB)
    - 80 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
    - 8X DVD +/- RW/R & CD-RW Combo
    - Intel(R) Pro/Wireless 2200 802.11BG & Bluetooth
    - Microsoft(R) Works/Money
    - 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - hpshopping in-box envelope
    Original Price $1,873.00
    APP Price 1,760.56
    10% 176.00
    1,584.56
    Mail in Rebate 100.00
    New Price 1,484.56

Supposedly, you can't use the coupon code as well as the APP price because I tried it online before calling, but I'll have to wait to see if I get my credit. Shipping date: 10/18/04. Yippie! Maybe I'll get it right before my birthday!

    Jealous![^]

I read the regulatory delay is normal and isn't really delay, just a term. I'm thinking Wednesday!

Can't wait for your review of the V2000 Army Player! I'm really really hoping it's what I expected because I never seen this model in real life before. [ :D]

Well, I received my Compaq v2000 yesterday. Technically it's not mine, it's my client's, but for the next couple of days while I configure the thing for him it will be living with me. Hehe.

Overall I'd say the build quality is solid. No strange flexing in the handrest area. The keyboard is nicer than I expected with a decent notch feeling when you press the keys. This is my first experience with a Centrino 'book and the wireless access seems really good. Certainly better than my own VPR Matrix which has a crap-tastic antenna and always weak signal.

Screen... The 14" widescreen is, in my estmation, a really nice compromise between the ridiculously tiny 12" screens and the 15.4" screens on 'books like my own. For travel I would really like this little thing. Not too big but big enough that I don't have to strain. The Compaq doesn't come with BrightView. If anyone has a Compaq with BrightView I'm going to feel like a jerk though, because it would have been nice. Overall really good clarity and brightness for a non-new-agey-shiney display.

As for design... The layout is really nice. Very Apple-ish. I'm not a big fan of uncovered ports though, no matter who makes it. Seems like no one making notebooks cares that fragile connections like multi-pin docking ports, network, modem. and memory readers don't have flaps or any protection from the elements (or just dust). Oh well, at least the PCMCIA slot has a blank in it.

I'd be more than happy to buy this notebook for myself if I were interested in a notebook for handling everything except games. Great little system for everyday non-gaming use.

So, I'm thinking of picking up the HP. I really don't need to do anything too fantastic, so why should I or shouldn't I upgrade from the 1.4 Pent to the 1.6 Pent. Extra $45 doesn't sound like much, but its really easy to option this computer up from $1000 to $1500 like that.

Yeah, my laptop is still in limbo, except that it went into regulatory delay, went to the sorting facility and went back. Man. This is getting a bit frustrating. That October 20th delivery date is looking to be a reality at this rate. Betty will probably get hers before I do!

Hey BigAlec! Thanks for your review! Makes me even more confident that I might have ordered the right computer. The one worry I have right now that that is the screen might be a bit short since it's 14" widescreen. Oh, Brightview is available for this computer at additional $75.

Sublimination, when did you place your order? How many days after shipping date does it take for the order to arrive? And what exactly are they doing in regulatory delay? Customs thinks that there will be illegal stuff in the laptop or something?

Hey Betty, I ordered the laptop on the 20th of October. It finally shipped on the 30th. It didn't even make it to Alaska until the 4th though, and now it's stuck in Indianapolis. Cuz, yeah, Alaska to Indiana is a much more direct route to Texas. Way to go Fedex. Lets GO GOGOGOGOGOGOG GO!

Ok, compaq is getting really annoying now. Can't it just make up its final mind as to what can be customized on the laptop? Within days, they have added new options for a harddrive & the wireless connection. Can I call them to change features or I have to cancel and reorder again?

Should I choose the 80gb 4200RPM or 80gb 560RPM for an additional $25.00? And as for all those different network stuff, which should I choose? i don't understand any of this.

Well, the pros for the 5400 speed drive is increased performance when using large files, and startup time. The con is that the drive is faster and thus consumes more power, so your battery life may suffer a bit. This sounds like it'll be your main computer for a while, so I think it was a wise choice though.

Well, I gave in and called HPshopping to change my order. My new order includes the 5400RPM harddrive now for an additional $25 & 1+ hour on the phone with customer svc. because mines was a bit incompetent. He kept putting me on hold to ask his supervisor questions. So now, my estimated ship date is October 21 (missed my birthday) :(

Not sure if that upgrae from 4200RPM to 5400RPM was worth the hassle. It should have been easy, but he made it complicated. At least he was nice though.

Yes, this is definitely going to be my only main computer. I like the Sony desktop, but I I don't really have room to store the tower, so I'll be sticking to a laptop. The battery issue is not really a problem for me at all because I don't intend to move it too much at all.

And so the waiting and testing of my patience continues....

Is your computer out of regulatory delay yet?

    Hello
I got my v2000 yesterday at 10:35 AM. It is beautiful and small and very nice.
My oreder date was Spt. 23. 2004 and the estimated delivery date is still Oct. 20th. But somehow i recieved it yesterday, the 6th.
    The specification iswas as follows:
    Compaq Presario V2000 series customized
    - Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition with SP2
    - Intel(R) Pentium(R) M Processor 725 (1.6 GHz)
    - 14.0" WXGA Widescreen (1280x768)
    - Intel(R) Extreme Graphics with productivity ports
    - 512MB DDR SDRAM (1x512MB)
    - 80 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
    - DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
    - Intel(R) Pro/Wireless 2200 802.11BG WLAN
    - Microsoft(R) Works/Money
    - 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
It came up to 1,272.76 and then i will get $100 mail and rebate and another $50 bucks mail and rebate.
The screen is 14 inches which is small, but it looks good and since the laptop is small and only 5.21 LBS, the 14 inch screen is great.
I will write you guys more and more. I'm still playing around with it and try to connect it through wireless internet.
The 12 cell battery is allright. Eventhough it sticks out from the end bottom about one and half inches. It doesn't bother you while typing. The 12 cell actually helps you in typing, cause the keyboard is tilted towards you.
But I might get the 8 cell too.
This thing is beautiful and lovely.
Ask me any questions and i will be happy to answer you.
I live in NEW YORK CITY. For some reason i got the V2000 faster then you guys....I don't know why!!!!

Im very happy and enjoying the touch of this "Girly" Laptop.
    Hooaah

NO!!! This sucks! Army Player ordered his 3 days after me and got his yesterday. It's really aggrevating. Hey Army Player, did you get the Bright view display? I think that might have been why mine took so long to ship, though why Fedex is acting the turtle is still a mystery.

UPS and FedEx can annoy the hell out of you once it loses a package. I once had a package going from one sorting facility to the next facility, then back to the 1st facility and back and forth for about a month! I called them up and they couldn't do anything about it because it was still being scanned in & out of the facility, so it wasn't lost. Idiots.

I hope that's not the case with you Sublimination. Much luck!

Army_Player, I live in NYC as well! Hope I can get my laptop as fast as you did. And if you have time, how about writing a lengthy review and maybe taking some photos of the laptop? I will try to do that after I get mines, but seems like everyone here is going to get theirs before mines.

I'm connect through wireless network though SJU compus. It is wokring great and has a fast speed.
My system information through Control Panel says that i have 480 MB of RAM... My Memory space should be 80G. But in here it says 74.5 GB and Free space is 68.3 GB.
Extreme Grahpics with Productivity Ports has a 32MB of Video which sucks. I think i Can't play Americas army in this little machine.

Hey Army, in regards to the hard drive, the way a manufacturer labels their drive and what windows recognizes are usually a bit different. The missing GB are probably either for system restore, or for recovery software installed on a partition on the drive.

As for the ram, remember you have Integrated Graphics, which borrow memory from the main memory.

    Still waiting. So sad.

A call to fedex revealed absolutely nothing. They said they are waiting for paper work to catch up to them from the sender, I guess that would be HP. I guess we all get the shaft once in a while, though it's odd atleast 3 laptops are being held up in the same place. Maybe I should contact HP next. It's still within the time period set by them though, (Ship date Oct 4th, and 5-7 buisness days delivery). Patience is a virtue. Look at me. I'm a virtuoso.

Hi to all the happy V2000 owners and to all the unpatient who still have to wait for theirs.
I would like to know, what it's the main diference beween the V2000 and the DV1000? besides the looks I would think that the hp is better. Is there any other difference? wich one has more features? cuz i dont care too much about the looks (i mean, the DV is still nice enough).
And the other question I have is this: if I order mine with WiFi will still have the lan port? because if I dont, then i also have to buy a lan card, not everywhere i can find WiFi, specially here in Venezuela [ :(]
Can you help me decide between the two models?
    Thanks
PS: sorry for the bad english [ :p]

To V or not to V? maybe DV

The only major difference is that the DV1000 has a "quickplay" feature that lets you watch DVDs and listen to MP3s without booting up the computer. I haven't heard any data that suggests this feature extends battery life. You can also by a remote control for about 15$ extra that fits into the PCMCIA slot.

Remember both machines are from the same manufacturer so aesthetics aside, they are identical. They are configurable with virtually all the same hardware (barring the quick play feature and remote). It really comes down to the following...

Do I need quickplay? eg. If you already have an MP3 player, and the battery doesn't in fact last longer with this feature, it's probably not worth it.

Do I like how it looks? Look at the 2 color schemes and shape of the laptop. I know it seems unimportant, but you'll be working on this machine for the next few years, so it's really a consideration you should make.

Which is cheaper? Configure both laptops with the feature set you want (as I said you can configure identical set ups) and see which is cheaper with the current rebates. Rebates for HP vs. Compaq usually differ a bit, and you should also look at what discounts (are you a student?) or coupons you can apply.

Lastly, you asked about the wireless lan card. From what I've read, internal cards generally preform better than the PCMCIA cards you can add on later. I would suggest the B/G option, and foregoe the bluetooth unless your office or other gadgets really use it.

I went through the same decision as you. I was VERY fond of the silver interior of the V2000. However after looking closely at the images here...

    http://www.notebooknara.com/shop/bbs/photo_view.php?pno=119&pcnt=1&ppage=1&listcd=&db=review&left_mode=community

...I decided the DV1000 actually appealed to me more, especially once I realized the Compaq was BLACK on the outside TOP and bottom. Also, I spoke to a couple of the sales people at HP/Compaq and the the general opinion was the DV1000 has a slightly better build quality than the V2000...but I'm sure that's subjective. Everyone I talked to seemed really excited about the DV1000.

In the end I opted for the DV1000. If the V2000 was sliver inside AND out...well that might have changed my mind :)

Yeah it came down to a couple features on the Compaq that decided it for me.

    1. Arrow keys. On the DV100 they are elipsoid with white spots, that looks kinda wierd.
    2. Top colors. The top of the DV1000 is a bluish silvery color that the R3000 used, and after seeing real world pictures I didn't like it much. The black seems very clean, and contrasts better with the silver.
    3. Keyboard - the DV1000 does look pretty cool with the black keyboard, though the power button is displaced off to the side because of the quickplay buttons (and why is it white?). The grey colored keyboard looks awesome to me, as does the button layout above it.
    4. LCD Bezel. Again, I liked the black/silver contrast and rounded corners. The lcd hinge also goes over the back like a powerbook which is cool. The screen also looks like it fits more flush with the laptop so it has cleaner lines when closed.
    5. I didn't like how the DV1000 slopes inward across the front (speaker area), which makes it look trapezoidal or something. The v2000 is flat across the front, and combined with the latch button, I believe it looks more elegant.

Again like I said, all this visual stuff may not seem worth any merit, but as someone who can't afford to buy a new machine at less than 4 year intervals, I want to be stuck with something that I don't mind having for a while. The DV1000 while it does have some cool features and attractive designs (the reflective border around the black keyboard looks cool but probably sucks up fingerprints) seems less well designed. It's oddly angular in places and just doesn't look as utilitarian/clean as I'd like.

The DV1000's are on the move - out of customs and out of
    Indiana.

I got my V2000!!! Man this thing is sweet looking! It's smaller and thinner than I thought it would be. The weight is just right, though with the 12cell battery it's a bit back heavy. The angle it gives though is very comfortable for writing, and the batterylife is amazing (with max battery and wireless off) I'm getting estimates of 9+ hours. I'll update with more detailed power usage as I am able.

Other aesthetics qualities of mention are the silver keys and inside. It looks awesome, much better than even the titanium power books I'm used for class. One unexpected benefit of the color of the keys (silver key with black letters) is that they are easy to view in the dark.

The brite view. What can I say. It's beautiful. Only problem I've had is finding desktop pictures to match the widescreen and do the display credit.

    Gripes: minor stuff
The touchpad: Nice and sensitive, but it's contoured to the widescreen meaning it's a rectangle. Combined with the horizontal and vertical scroll surfaces on it, the area for your finger is kind of small. The rubber coated buttons are very nice though.

The card reader: yeah it doesn't do compact flash. They only reason I got it was so I'd have an S-Video out.

Lights: The led lights are an amber color, which is cool with the silver and black, though I think white (ala the ibooks) would have looked better. Like I said, all these are just little gripes.

Can't wait to get more programs installed and get this thing really reviewed.

I put in DVD today to test what you were experiencing. I only really noticed changes when I was watching something with a lot of black. Turning the screen away would cause the black areas on screen to begin to reverse in color. The desktop and other apps however have great viewing angles (you can turn the screen perpendicular to you and everything is till clear). The DVD playback effect may have something to do with the software, particularly the overlay settings for the video card. I don't know enough to remedy it, but it doesn't seem like a big issue. I tried the same movie with PowerDVD and didn't see as much of an effect.

Make no mistake though, this display rocks.

A laptop that boasts being DVD playable without startup that isn't at all too good for DVDs? That is really something....

Meanwhile, I'm still waiting for my V2000. Ever since I ordered my new computer, my old computer has really been acting up...grrr....

    Casey,

I'm interested in that 6cel if you still have it. Does anyone know if the V2000 and DV1000 use the same battery?

    I've already emailed you directly.

    Thanks,
    Mitch

Sounds good! Once you get the return taken care of email me via my forum profile.

I'm curious, how smooth was the return with HP? Are the paying for return shipping?

Good luck finding a better laptop!

    Thanks,
    Mitch

From what I understand, return to HP shopping is free. You call customer service and they e-mail you a packaging label for return.
