Okay honestly, the flaws are (and well stated) Battery life, the notebook runs hotter than most,(due to the Prescott core) the fans when all three are running make noise.(let it be known that the one fan in my hp ze4315us is louder than all three in the X6000) Now for the good! It's a desktop replacement! My benchmarks prove it, the DVD's that I burn (with the software I put in another post) prove it, the games I play prove it (Halo, Doom 3, Call of Duty) The notebook looks awesome, I love the silver, all the options on the notebook are second to none. Would I buy it again...right now with what I see on the market, for the price...ya betcha I would! I think it's gonna be awfully hard to beat the price per performance that the X6000 has. Not even the ZD8000 can beat the price...an equally configured ZD8000 will set you back $300-$400 more....just one happy owners opionion.

Thank you to everyone in this thread. You all cemented my choice on which laptop to buy. I order the x6000 yesterday and can hardly wait to open it up in a couple of weeks when it arrives.
Quick question of my own. The media cable, does anyone here use it? Is it worth the $70?
Ordered: Compaq x6000, 3.0ghz, SXGA+, 512mb, Ati x600 256, 60gig 7200, WiFi+Bluetooth -

I don't use the media cable. When you get it, put it through some paces...then write a review on your new Lappy, I put a review here on the website. I have a Hauppage PVR USB2 that I use with the Laptop in places like the kitchen...it works awesome. I am leaving for Iraq(again) on March 10th, this system will be going with me, last time I took my ze4315us, this time when I get some time off I will be able to play ALL my games, watch TV (if they finished installing cable where we were staying (they were working on it last Sept) I'm kinda excited that everything I do at home I can do thousands of miles away with confidence. I will keep tabs on the this web site though...to see how you guys are doing. Nothing better than tips and tricks you learn from others!!! =)

Well, after reading all these reviews I am going to order this laptop myself, I was torn between the HP ZD8000 and this one and from what I have read I don't see the difference really. I liked the idea of having the little remote control that came with the 8000 model but seeing as the 7200rpm hard drive cost difference alone was 100 dollars.
One question I do have, what is the difference between the wireless card options. Is the card that comes with bluetooth better than the card that is included in the price? Will I benefit from paying the extra for the Blue Tooth card and where will it be used? I've heard there is some kind of speed boost with the included card if you buy the wireless router with the speedboost, this could come in handle transferring large files from my home system.
Also, how good is the graphics in this laptop, how good would games such as Everquest, Everquest II, World of Warcraft, and games of this nature play on it. Would I have to disable alot of graphics? I have an ATI 9700pro in my home computer now which is an AMD 2100 with 512 meg of ram.
I'm buying this computer for some video editing, burning DVD's, and for some gaming. Hoping that everything works well with it.

I didn't get the bluetooth either.....never used it, so I won't make any statements on that. If you get a router with speedboost real world estimates are a 30% increase over 802.llg. Now for your other question...hmmmm, ATI 9700pro (awesome card btw) You should download MadOnions 3DMark2001se. You can compare your systems benchmark and this one's, I got 11,600 on this system. With your processor and ram I think it's going to be close to this one. Remember, that a desktop video card (such as the ATI 9700pro) is gonna blow a laptop video card right out the water. Those people with mobile 9700 cards...are not getting the same card as you have. Here is some interesting reading about mobile video cards...to give you a better understanding....I am curious to see what your system benchmarks though....download madonion and do a benchmark and post your results if you have the time. As you see by these benchmarks the mobility 9700 lags behind the 9600xt (desktop version) This system will play those games..but I am sure your going to have turn down some of the graphics. The best gaming laptop on the market is the Dell XPS inspiron exteme edition coming in a whopping $4600.00 For that price...I'd build a Super monster desktop with two 10,000 rpm WD raptures running a raid 0 config and a 400Gig HDD for PVR duties...the best DESKTOP video card....just the works. That thing is like a shuttle in a laptop case!

here is some info, comparing the X600 against the mobile 9700:
It is rather hard to compare the Mobility Radeon X600 on the Pentium 4 550 / 915P platform against the Mobility Radeon 9700 on the Dothan 1.8Ghz / 855GME chipset. We found that the CPU/Memory performance of the pre-production notebook is low probably due to the fact that the notebook is running 512MB DDR2 on single channel mode and possibly memory timing issues. As such, 3DMark2001SE and Aquamark 3 CPU tests are affected by the low CPU/Memory performance. However, 3DMark2003 offers a better picture since it relies more on the GPU rather than the CPU and memory. It is pretty clear that Mobility X600 offers better performance than the Mobility Radeon 9700 with higher 3DMark2003 and Aquamark GFX scores. Hopefully this preview will give you some clues on the performance of the Mobility Radeon X600 and certainly we look forward to check out the performance again on a more stable and better performing platform.

Wow, there's a lot of posts here. A lot of people are excited about this laptop!
-
Yea! I think maybe people are seeing it's a good alternative to the HP ZD8000. When I first started looking for a 17 inch notebook around Dec. I was about to buy a closeout deal on a ZD7080. Then I Looked at Compaq, found this one alot cheaper...here I am! LOL, Posten away, letting everyone know about this secret. No reviews anywhere about this lappy, So after taking a look at the ZD8000 and X6000 spec sheet...I was like Man! These are almost the same laptops..one is just $300.00 cheaper.

Ok, ran the 3dmark test on my home system, stats to follow, this was just to give a comparison to a desktop to the X6000's performance for those interested.
Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard
AMD XP 2100 processor, runs at 1.74ghz
60 Gig Maxtor ATA 133 7200 RPM HD
512meg 3200 ram (had to use CAS 2.5 because of cost restraints)
ATI 9500 Pro (Flashed the bios of the card so it thinks it's 9700 Pro)
Windows XP Pro SP 2
3d Mark 2001 gave it a 11413 score
If I overclock the video card which I've done before that number goes up significantly but because I already burned out the factory fan on it and have a processor fan screwed onto the heat sync of the video card I took it back to factory speed []
So, if this laptop performs as good or almost as good as my desktop I'm in good shape. I'm just a casual gamer, will be glad if it runs Warcraft III good so I can play games with my son. Maybe a little Halflife II or Call of Duty.
This forum is great and I thank you all for the information you have shared, makes my disicion to buy this laptop much easier, that and I get paid tomorrow and the Wife gave me the green light to order it.
I read above that there is a 25 dollar coupon code I can use, does that coupon really work? If so, I can go from the 3.0 to the 3.2ghz and still stay within my budget the wife set for me. Should be able to get it with 512 ram, 60gig 7200rpm drive, 3.2ghz, 8X dvd burner, Bright monitor, 256 meg video all for about 1553 if the coupon works and then get the 30 dollar mail in rebate for a total of 1523.

This laptop performs better than your desktop in it' standard config. My score was in the 11,600 range. Your good to go then!

I have a question that hopefully someone can answer. I know that you had to have two of the same type of memory sticks to get dual channel support on the AMD desktops. I saw this and was wondering if it is true "The new memory controller supports dual channel memory capability without the requirement of exactly matching the memory type in each of the two channels." This is quoted form compaq.
So does this mean I can have a 256MB and a 512MB and get dual channel? -
I didn't buy a matched pair (tested together) but I did buy the same manufacture. The memory I bought was exactly the same two sticks. I don't know if I would chance buying two sticks from two manufactures. If I already had one stick...I would try to find another like it. But if were buying both, I would buy the same type. I think your more likely that dual channel wouldn't work if the sticks were from two different manufactures. They might work, but it's just a hassel if they don't. I think it's safe to say that two sticks same type and model from the same manufacture will work in this machine. The memory in both channels have to be the same, you can't match a 256 and a 512 and run dual channel.

I have ordered one of these a couple days ago.
X6000
P4 3.0GHz w/HT
17" Brightview
60GB 7200
256MB DDR2
DVD Burner
256MB ATI X600
I figured that I would just buy the Ram on my own instead of through Compaq. I'll probably just get another 256 for right now, This summer I'll get 2GB for it. -
Oh Oh, thought of another question that I wanted to ask. What brand DVD burner comes in these things. I'm ordering the regular 8X burner since the Dual Layer disks cost a small fortune and I have a Dual Layer drive in my home system anyway if I want to use them. I am very partial to the NEC drives, had the 2500a drive and burned over 600 dvd's with it before the tray finally gave out and I couldn't get it back on it's track and have to buy a new drive.
Oh, and has anyone bought the Backpack case they advertise, wondering on how it fits in it, they have a 50 dollar regular case at Circuit City I could get at a later date but the backpack sounds kinda cool.
Former Celeron 500mhz user, 192 meg ram, 6 gig hd, 8 meg ati video, hehe -
Ok, that would be an LG brand drive them, never used that brand, hope it can burn DVD's good, I'll use it alot, heh.
Former Celeron 500mhz user, 192 meg ram, 6 gig hd, 8 meg ati video, hehe -
I don't know what brand it is...here is what is says it is....
HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-408ON
I still have the original PC-3200 OEM Stick laying here. If you want to work something out until summer we can. Running on 256mb is what Windows XP needs alone...your gonna be going through the swap files like mad!
I have two notebook carrying cases...the Targus CPT400 for short trips to the coffee shop...it's a smaller bag but the X6000 fits perfectly. (I used this for my ze4315us but the X6000 fits too)
And for long trips...I have the Targus XL rolling case for long trips through airports and such.
I have a Laptop backpack...but it just became a pain in the butt to keep taking the laptop out in airports, when I put it back in..I would have to almost take everything else back out of the backpack to make it fit (this was a 15 inch notebook) so I got targus...it made life much easier when traveling. The concept is nice though, cause it doesn't advertise your carrying a laptop. I just got tired of the 5 minute repacks (at least twice before getting on a plane) Then if you have a connecting flight, and you run to the bathroom, you can go through this like 6 times in one flight...hahahah

anway, I have played the games I mentioned
painkiller can be played at 1280x1024
while BOOh is playable at 1024x768
i have 2x aa and 8x af
for doom 3, well, its playable at 1024x768
it is smoother at 800x600 resoution
no aa or af in this game,
ut2004
i play onslaught option, which is more demanding
game played smoothly at 1280X1024 resolution with 2x aa and 8x af
also played hl2, at 1280X1024 resolution
and it worked smoothly
temparatures when as high as 62 degrees c for the cpu while hd when up to 40 degrees C
also you can barely hear the hd
i got the 7200rpm 60 gig one
while playing fans noise didnt increase
-
yikes, those resolutions are pretty bad. (in my opinion) But playing smoothly is more important. How much ram do you have in the notebook and at what speed?

Those are some very nice pics, thanks!
-
are you talking about the doom 3 resolutions?
because 1280X1024 is a good resolution
i am surprise that this mobile chip can play at those resolutions
considering its performance is lower than a 9700pro
i suggest to not have high expectations because if you do you will left disappointed
painkiller BOOH is also playable at 1280X1024 resolution
only slowdown I encountered was in the first level, with the fog
also keep in mind i am using aa and af
2x aa and 8x af
i have one gig of ram
using latest omega drivers, 5.1
latest intel chipset drivers
anway here are some pictures of my notebook

yes I got the brightview screen with 1680X1050 resolution
i just played il2 sturmovik forgotten battles for a time
laptop got a little bet warmer, and the right section next to the touchpad got a little bet warm, but
i played it at 1024x768 resolution, played smoothly
also, i found the reason why i got those playable resolutions for doom 3
omega drivers set the aa to 2x and 4x af
didnt notice that until now
unfortunately i uninstalled doom 3 already since i dont plan to play it for a while plus wanted to save hd space
but i am guessing it will playable to 1280x1024 with the aa and af off -
