Nice pics Az2. How do you like that Audigy PCIMA card? I'm thinking of getting one for my laptop when it comes in. I think it may be a better option than buying the compaq media cable offer on the HP site. Does the card have optical or spdif out? I plan on running the cable to my Klipsch DD-5.1 decoder box. I'm running the original Pro Media 5.1's at home. These are some killer speakers, I can only imagine what the updated Ultra's sound like.
Thanks for the info on the cooler, I may need to get one also.
Ordered: Compaq x6000, 3.0ghz, SXGA+, 512mb, Ati x600 256, 60gig 7200, WiFi+Bluetooth -
Woot, placed my order yesterday and got a pretty good deal I think. Instead of ordering it online I called them and when he asked me what I'd be using it for I happened to mention that I was going back to school and would need it. He gave me some educational discount. My original spec'd out machine online would have been 1553 for the following setup
3.2 ghz processor
17" with Brightview
512meg ram
60 gig 7200rpm hd
8x DVD+/- drive
Wireless network card with speedboost
256 meg ati 600
Microsoft winxp home edition
He gave me some bad news tho, as of the 14th the network card and DVD burner upgrade weren't free, they now cost 25 dollars each to upgrade them.
Then he said, but wait, it has an instant rebate now of 100 dollars. I had him change from Home Edition XP to XP Pro for 49 dollars and the total price is now 1476.30.
So, I saved about 75 bucks and got XP Pro, not a bad deal. I still get the 30 dollar mail in rebate too. I did use that 25 dollar coupon mentioned earlier in the posts.
One question I have, how long does it really take to get the laptop? I mean, it says it will ship on the 28th and it's 5 to 7 days shipping. Do they really take 2 weeks to put together or have they been shipping out earlier than the 2 weeks they say it takes?
Oh, and next question, which wireless router do you think is the best, the Netgear or the Linksys, both have a speedboost version out. I normally would prefer the Netgear but just curious.
How does the wireless routers work for gaming, is there alot of lag or dropout when you play online?

I use the linksys, It's awesome, no lag at all...I don't use the speedboost, A cable modem only gives you MAX 3mbps. An average G router says it will support (54mbps) but in the real world it's more in the 20mbps range. That being said, you can't tell the difference between a wirless 54mbps router (with a strong signal) or wired ethernet when surfing the web or playing games on the internet. Speedboost and ethernet are more for steaming video's from one pc to another (ethernet is cheaper for multiple computers if you want to rip into walls and wire your rooms) You won't be able to tell the difference on the internet, using wired or wireless. To be honest, you really can't tell the differnce between 802.11b and 802.11g 802.11b, pulls in around 5mbps more than enough for a cable modem. As far as which one is the best, It all depends on who you ask. I picked the Linksys because I use VOIP the Linksys has wirless, support for VOIP and ethernet. As far as dropout, that depends on your intenet provider too. I guess I've been lucky, my systems never dropout. (oooh here comes murphy's law!)
BTW, great deal on you laptop, congrats

Even the slowest wireless networks these days run at 11mbps which is still even faster than most broadband connections. If you have slowdown it's probably a bottleneck somewhere else. My ping times are the same with my wirless and with my network card. After thinking a minute, it's more apt to be your server than your wireless network. (let me add that walls, floors, and heating ducts will slow down your wireless network as well)

Ack, it's driving me crazy, I CAN'T wait 3 weeks, this is killing me, lol. Funny thing is, if it actually comes when it says it will, saying it ships on the 28th with 5 to 7 days shipping, and since the 7th day would be a Monday, meaning unless I got it in 4 days I'd get it on Monday March the 7th. My Birthday is March the 8th, one hell of a Birthday Present, heh.

Don't sweat it man, by no means do I feel like that. If I am giving the wrong infromation and you know the right info, then by all means lets let everyone know. I won't argue with anyone in a forum anyway, everyone is entitled to have an opionion. You take the best out of that and use it. I learned something today...I am sure I am not the only one. That's what forums are for. Heck, I learned from one member in here that these laptops don't use Axiom, I could have sworn they did, but as he stated, motherboard part numbers are different for each gpu. The ram thing is another story, I mean I am using it, my pc is telling me the speed, type, manufacture date...you name it. Then I'm told HP says it won't work....That just annoys me. hahahah...NEway, no sweat!

Thanks everyone for your input. My decision to buy the X6000 was made easier. I ordered the ff:
Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition with SP2
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 540 w/HT Technology, 3.2GHz
17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Wide Viewing (1680x1050)
256MB DDR2 SDRAM, 400MHz (1x256MB)
40 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
DVD+/-RW/R & CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer Support
256MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) X600
54g(TM) 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster(TM)
The $25 coupon code did not work (probably coz they added a $100 instant-rebate). I bought a 1GB PC2 4200(533MHz)Ram from Page Computer to replace the existing memory.
My problem now is that I bought the 40 GB HD 4200rpm so that compaq can ship it by the March 1, 2005(if I choose the 60 GB HD 7200rpm they'd ship it on March 8). I'm planning on buying a 40GB 7200RPM Travelstar Notebook Hard Drive, Model 14R9200 , OEM at Newegg to replace it. Will I have a compatibility problem or an installation problem?

Hey
I'm curious if anyone that has the x6000 or ordered it purchased the extended warranty? For those who have it already, have you had to contact HP support and how did it go if you did?
Thanks

I didn't purchase the extended warranty when i ordered mine. Since you can still purchase it while its under the factory warranty I'm going to wait. If there are a lot of problems then i will. If it works fine then I won't.

I'm curious tho, is there any place in this laptop to install a second Hard Drive? I figure there isn't cause it's not mentioned anywhere on the specs or options when you build it.
Also, what memory does it take, I mean, how many pins? I thought I read somewhere in these posts that it's 200 pin memory, I keep seeing 240 pin memory advertised at different places.

Great forum, couldn't find anyone else discussing the zd8000 and X6000 to this detail.
I am still undecided between the 2. The extras in the zd according to the reps there
- the option of a Media Center OS and the external TV tuner that comes along with it.
- Some extra S/W (not sure what)
Configged the 2 to almost identical specs except the OS, diff = $300 ($100 MIR(or the lack of it) + $200 OS). Whoppa!
Questions.
1. What possible uses can we put this external TV tuner to?
2. Does it work internationally, meaning can I use it in, say Europe or Asia (NTSC/PAL?)
3. What does the Media Center OS offer?
May the notebook Gods smile on this forum. -

When it comes right down to it, convenience is simply the issue with the ZD8000, however if you can't find any real use for the tv tuner features, by all means go with the X6000 or ZD8000 without the MCE OS. The ideal use of the ZD8000 with MCE is for someone who lives in a small space, such as a dorm, or someone who simply enjoys watching television while doing their work, since the screen size is big enough. Right now, IMO that is who this system is designed for. If you really don't think you will use the TV features, then don't get. I've read many posts from people who haven't even taken their tuner out of the box.

Got a question, I ordered my new X6000 Feb 6th, the website stated it should ship by the 18th but I have no tracking information as of yet. Could someone give me an idea of how long it took to get theirs.
My new rig's specs:

17" WSXGA+Brightview
2 gigs of ram
60 gig 7200 RPM HD
8x DVD Burner
256 meg X600
b/g Wireless + Bluetooth

I called them yesterday to see if they knew anything else on my order, the rep said that as far as he could tell it was built but had not made it to the states yet. My luck they haven't even started it yet. LOL
I went to the order status page and it still says this:
Compaq Presario X6000 customizable Notebook PC Estimated to ship on February 18, 2005
Tracking provided upon shipment.
The only thing I see is that they removed the option of 2 gigs of ram on new x6000 orders, so they might have ran out of 1 gig sodimms.[]
-
Good news. Mine shipped the 19th. My order was on the 7th for my x6000. It should get here by the 25th according to FedEx Tracking. It came from SHANGHAI CN. Which I presume is china. I will keep you updated when I receive the unit and if I have any difficulties. Gauging from what I have heard, I'm not expecting any.
speced on the first page of the thread is my system if your curious minus the RAM, tacjam told me about a better deal so I went that way [8D].
I was kindof hoping it would have shipped from the U.S. so it could have been here quicker. Oh well... Atleast the wait is almost over.

Sweet! Good to see someone getting theirs that ordered around the same time as me. The one thing I notice on the Compaq site is if you choose a 3.2 or 3.6 it delays the order 9 days same goes with the 60 gig 7200 rpm drive. Since I got the 3.6 and the 60 gig drive I am probably screwed. LOL[

Take it easy, -
I oredered mine on the 9th and it gave me a ship date of the 23rd. I hope it still ships on that date. I had hoped it would ship sooner and be here by the 27th cause thats my birthday. That would have been a awesome early birthday present [

Hehe, I ordered mine on the 14th with a ship date of 2/28. If I do the math right and it ships on the 28th or March 1st there will be a good chance I'll get it on my Birthday, March 8th. The 8th is on a Tuesday and that would be 8 days. Since the prior Friday would be only 4 days and they don't deliver on Sat and Sunday, then Monday would be 7 days if it ships on Schedule. If they ship it one day late then it should arrive on the 8th. WOOT. [

Well, everytime I order from Newegg I get some crazy tracking. It doubles everything and says it left Sort Facility, the same facility at two different times. Then sometimes it says left Fed Ex Ramp at say 3pm and Arrived at Fed Ex Ramp at 6pm the same Fed Ex facility. Weird stuff like that.

One thing I noticed is the Fed Ex package tracking isn't as up to date as UPS. I got nothing off the tracking number, then I got 19-21st events. It shows nothing new now. I think I should look for updates every few days [

Ok. I have read everything posted twice. Here are my brain busters:
1. I ordered two x6000 laptops that will come a few days apart. Due to the fact that I ordered the first one with one gig of ddr2 3200 ram, I ordered a second one (only with 256mb) so I could send the first one back, and get ram from newegg.com. Hp told me that i can open the first one and play with it then send it back when i get the second one (and they will give me a full refund on the first one)..... should i do that, or just send it back right when it comes (so they dont try to charge me for opening the first one)?
2. I am looking to upgrade the ram by taking out the 256 it came with and replacing it with either.... 2X512mb ddr2 533 or 1 gig ddr2 533. Which option should i go with? should i use the 2 512mb so that i can have dual channel or go with the single 1 gig? what will be faster?
Thanks for any info you can give me on these questions -

On the upside, I received mine today, I confirmed shipment with fedex tracker and called the house to see if it was delivered. I haven't opened it yet because I am at work. I will keep you all posted. Riceman, tacjam left a link to some better memory for a cheaper price. You may want to call HP and tell them to downgrade the memory to 256mb and go buy the better memory. That is what I am doing, I even got the order two days before promised delivery date from fedex.
I am excited. I love getting new toys. I hope I won't have to return this one like I did the dell.

Hey guys, I just got my x6000 today. It said it would ship the 22nd but it shipped the 19th and was here today even though the fed ex tracking said delivery was 2 days from now. What a pleasant surprise.
Another good surprise was that they packaged 2 ac adapters in with it.. Do they ship two with every order or did I just luck out?
Now I can just leave one at home and one in the car so I always have one with me and never have to lug that huge thing around.
