OK guys... need some serious help before I order the X6000.

I love all of the specs especially the one with the dollar sign in front of it, but I do have a few concerns. How long does the battery last? I'm not talking about trying to do heavy gaming out in the yard, but if I want to type a paper on the porch how long can I expect. Also, heat... I read one user describe it as third degree burns... is this true. Let me put it another way, without using extra cooling stuff, if I use it on my lap extensively can I expect to reatin my ability to have children?

Please... someone answer this! I have looked through most of the forum and cannot find a definitive answer, though someone called it "so so" which really nails down the answer for me...

So to refine... With light using... typing a paper, surfing the net (cable connected) what kind of battery life can I expect.

How hot does it actually get, hot enough to make it terribly uncomfortable to use on your lap or not...?

    (12 Cell Lithium Ion)

    Thanks E

    Hello,

Okay thankyou for the information on the X6000 Hard Drive. I was confused because it was a 2.5 MB disk drive so i thought that that would work. I found this drive off of pricegrabber and wanted to know if it would work. I'm pretty sure that the only thing that i can buy is IDE and not EIDE. Here are the specs on the hard drive.

    Hitachi Travelstar 60GB Hard Drive
    IDE ATA-100, 7200 RPM, 8MB
    Hitachi - 08k0889

    Thanks for your help

You ask a very tough question. People have tried to ask this type before but comfort is subjective. Ill give it a shot though.

The battery will last no longer than 1:30mins. That is in a non gaming environment. Depends on other factors though, How high is your brightness, how often are you using the CD Drive, speakers, wifi, ect. I think you get the idea. I did notice a change to about 1hr when I used the CD drive constantly, like to stream DVD or music playback.

The heat is there, remember desktop processor. What some people don't understand is this heat is normal. If you work with PC's as a tech on a daily basis you will know this. The problem is, most people don't have their desktop PC sitting on their laps, usually its under the table or on a desk. Because of this most people don't notice the heat.

To the right of the mouse pad it can get hot, its not fry an egg on the notebook hot but if you have it there for a long period of time I can see how its an annoyance.

Personally I don't use my notebook as a laptop. Meaning it doesn't go on my lap. I strongly suggest placing something between your (will not mention) and this notebook. I use a notebook desk, you can find them for like $50 on ebay and they offer good support for the notebooks and a additional small table for a mouse and/or drink. They raise and lower and swivel to work like a drafting desk so you can angle to your comfort. Very portable and small in size. Good for on the porch.

No matter what you pick or what manufacturer, remember there is no perfect laptop. You have to give up a little to get more of what you want. X6000 has a few annoyances like any other laptop, but I haven't seen it have a problem, I have even called out on this thread for people to tell what bad things are going on, not many replies. This is a great notebook, but not for the fully portable user, unless you are moving it from one outlet to another. Not a bad pick for the price to replace the desktop. Very well presented and comfortable for most people to use. I hope this helps.

    Hello,

Okay i don't know why everyone was having trouble with the shipping. I ordered my X6000 about a week ago and they told me that the ship date would be July 15th. I ordered it on the 23rd of June. I got an e-mail yesterday saying that it would arrive on the friday the 1st. That is the 1st of July. So it will take two days to get here. I asked for standard delivery shipping which is 5-7 Business days. So it will arrive on friday. I guess they have less to do now.

The reason people had problems in the beginning is the demand was to high for Compaq to keep up with. There were components that they didn't have in stock and were waiting shipments for. I know the Brightview display was one of them, also the 7200 RPM drive was another, RAM started becoming scarce for a while too. I am glad you are getting yours soon.

BTW I like your screen name. :) I used to own a dell I9200, I owned it for a week. I'm glad I don't have it now :)

    Hey All,

Does anybody know the exact make and model of the x6000's motherboard? I've been unable to locate this information on HP's site or elsewhere on the web. I've also searched this forum for variants on x6000, motherboard, and mainboard, but no luck.

    Thanks

Just to follow up, I ended up getting the x6000 with the lightscribe drive. So far it's not noisy at all. It actually works pretty well, the images come out a little dark but it looks nice. If you do get one, expect the *cool* factor to wear off pretty quickly, I'd have to agree with Cyber6, unless you can really put it to use...there is not much point in getting one.
The only problem I've had with this drive is with one cd causing the drive to make grinding noises...it was a d-link disk that did it. I think the disk was not balanced correctly in the drive for some reason. The drive doesn't seem to be damaged at all (thank god!) and that quirk has not repeated itself with any other disks. Overall I really am glad I got the x6000, I've had it for a couple of weeks now and it is working great...

Hello everyone! I am PS. Wow, i can't beleive how much time people spend reading/writing reviews on laptops. Amazing, isnt it? To be honest with you, when I bought my first laptop back in 2000 I didnt look at a single review. I didnt know. I called up Compaq and order over the phone. Anyhow, I really appreciate what you all doing. This is really helpful to everyone who is planning to own a laptop.

I bought my first laptop in early 2000 - guess what I spent little over three grand to buy top of the line Compaq presario 1800 series. I can not imagine spending that kind of amount now. If you guys remember nothing was cheap then. I bought my first desktop computer (Pentium 133 Mhz, 64 MB RAM) I paid like $1800 in 1996. During the last two years I bought three more laptops (Toshiba, IBM and Dell). I didnt like anyone of them and gave first two to my friends and last one to my brother. I ended up with my 15" Presario at last. I still use it. It never crashed. I love my presario. Since 2000 I might have reformated three times. Thats it. Now I am planning to give this to my little sister and buying a new laptop. I have been looking at different products by different manufacturers and unable to decide. I have these in my mind - Compaq x6000, Gateway M680, and Dell 9300 in that order. Reviews are good on all the three. I am debating myself.

Soon to be a new Gig owner.

Just a quick update about the Compaq Presario X6000, it's no more. The line has been pulled by HP!!! Maybe because the sales have gone down and it's now competing with the ZD8000. At least I am glad I got my pc when I did because I am still using mine without a hitch :) I guess this is also the end of this forum, good luck to everyone and happy X6000 computing to everyone for years to come!!!

I know this thread is somewhat out dated but I love my X6000 and was wondering if it would be possible to put a dual core CPU in it? I don't know much about CPU upgrades in notebooks.
