Cool, hopefully they will send me the NEC drive they are putting in them now as a replacement, it's a much better drive than the single layer DVD drive they use to put in them. [ :D]

Can someone that has the Dual Layer DVD Burner in their 6000 look in the device manager and tell me what model it is. I think someone said it was an NEC and I'm wondering if it's the 6500 model. Thanks

    For anyone interested,

If you have to take the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive out for any reason, it's extremely simple. There is only one screw that holds the drive in and no disassembly is required of the laptop. The one screw that holds it in is located on the bottom of the laptop just to the left of the cover that covers the Hard Drive. It is a Deep Set screw and it's between the battery and the hard drive cover. To the left upper corner of the hard drive cover to be exact. There is a bracket mounted on the back of the drive almost in the middle of the drive so if you can picture where that would be on the bottom of the laptop that is where the screw is. Just remove that screw, you may need to push in on the cd rom drive a bit to relieve the pressure on the screw to get it out all the way. Once that is out, just use a paper clip to open the drive and gently pull the drawer out and the drive will slide out. Be careful when pulling the drawer out but don't be surprised if you have a little resistance at the end, it has to disconnect the connector from the back of the drive so you have to give it a little extra pull.

If you have to replace the drive and HP/Compaq sends you a new one, they send you instructions on how to do this (HAHA). The instructions are 3 pictures with no written directions.

1st picture shows you how to open the drawer with a paper clip
2nd picture shows you pullng the drawer out (Has directional arrows)
3rd picture shows you pushing the new drive in (again, directional arrows)

Unfortunetly, they don't show you where the screw I mentioned is so one would think you need to take the keyboard off and remove some mounting screws or something first.

Fortunetly for me however I had to call them because they sent me the wrong Drive, sent me a CD-R/DVD Rom instead of a DVD-RW and I asked them how to remove the drive. The Rep told me there were two screws on the bottom near the drawer of the CD drive but she must have been looking at the wrong model or something.

Hope this helps someone, takes the guessing out of replacing the drive and also for anyone that is a geek that just likes to rip things apart and see the part numbers.

    hehe

It looks like it was really easy to remove the drive. I am not surprised tech support didn't know what they were doing. Glad you did though. Thanks for the tips, I will put them to good use when I have to replace my CD Drive, I know it will happen eventually. Any ideas on how your drive burned out so fast? Thats why I don't really run too many things on the notebook DVD drive, I use my servers to access CD's over the network, not that you should have to though, I'm just too lazy to call for a repair. I do alot of DVD ripping and burning. The drive didn't burn out exactly but the problem I'm having is that it won't read alot, and I mean alot of DVD+R discs after I've burned them. It will get alot of read errors in the middle of reading a file. The DVD+R discs I'm using are of High Quality and this drive should read them without error. I've looked up the specs on the drive and also the DVD's that I'm using and both state that they are compatible. I know that some drives just are finicky and don't like certain brands of DVD's but for what we've paid for this model it should read everything.

Normally I would recommend using an external burner to extend the life of the DVD drive. But then I started thinking, "Why am I doing this, it has a 1 Year Warrenty". I paid for it and might as well use it as much as I can before the year is up and hopefully it will fail before the year is up. If it fails after the year is up I figure the way the prices of the drives are falling it will cost next to nothing to replace it then.

When I ordered this in February, the price of the NEC 8X burner was almost 150. I just checked on Newegg and it's just around 100 dollars now. I figure it will be about 75 maybe even 50 dollars in another year or so.

Also, since we ordered this laptop, they stopped offering the drive we got a few weeks after. They really aren't a very good drive to tell the truth. Couldn't even find a firmware upgrade for them on the internet.

Not putting HP or Compaq down of course, these drives were what was available at the time and were cost efficient and for most users are fine. Also they were a free upgrade from the CDR's they were offering. But if they are willing to replace them free of charge while under warrenty I'm gonna take one. I did confirm that they are sending me a Dual Layer drive, the one they are putting in the laptops now as a replacement, at least that is what the Rep told me.

I've gone thru 3 DVD drives already on different systems so I figure I'll be replacing this new one soon regardless. I've burned over 1000 DVD's so I guess you could consider me a Power User, hehe.

Oh, btw, one funny thing that did happen that I had to get a chuckle out of. When I told them the problem I was having they wanted to take me thru a series of steps to correct the problem. Now believe me I'm not putting them down, they have a set precedure they have to follow to diagnose and try to solve your problems. First thing she had me do was take the battery out and remove the memory and then put it back in. Then she wanted to reinstall the DVD Drive, remove from Device Manager and restart, then reinstall the drivers. I had already reinstalled the drivers, found new ones and then put the old ones back on. So, after all this and it still did not recognize the CD, she said "Looks like we have to take the system back to factory settings and Restore the Operating System". Now I'm no genius but I know you don't reinstall windows to fix a problem with your DVD drive for the type of problem I'm having. I told her I wasn't about to loose everything on my harddrive just to proof that I was right. She said they could send me out a new drive and that's where I am at now.

I know, a very lengthy post but I'm at work and bored, no DVD's here to rip, hehe.

    Shadowzone,

What software do you use to rip on your notebook? Does it make the notebook unusable til its done?

I use DVD Decryptor and no, it is sluggish but not unuseable. It eats up alot of harddisk usage as you can imagine so opening files when it runs takes some time but once they are open as long as the program isn't extremely hard drive dependent, it runs OK. Internet browsing is fine, office apps work Ok. I wouldn't try playing one of the newer games or anything like that but you can do most anything else.

I use DVD Shrink to compress the video, that does eat up alot of the processor and I don't do anything else while compressing video. You have the option in Shrink for low priority mode to improve multi-tasking but I like it to run as fast as it can without errors so I generally leave it alone.

    Hi,
I'm looking into buying a x6000. I would like to put a 80 to 100gb Seagate Momentus 7,200 rpm hard drive in it (at some point), but am confused by the ATA/IDE difference. I can only find ATA's on seagate's website. Would that type of drive work with the x6000? None of the specs I read mention exactly what it is so I'm guessing it's IDE.

I've seen here that some people have 7200rpm drives, what are you using?

    Thanks for any help...

    For anyone interested.

The Dual Layer DVD burners they are putting in the laptops now are the NEC ND6450A drives. These are an 8X Dual Layer drive that are sent to manufacturers to put into their laptops.

The drive on the market that you can buy is the NEC ND6500A, basically the same drive but with a different model number. I haven't really found out if there is any difference between the two drives yet.

If you are interested, you can flash the firmware of the ND6450A drive with the firmware of the ND6500A drive and it works just fine. I got my replacement drive in and flashed the firmware before even burning my first DVD and it runs great. I started reading thru the different forums about the difference but was tired and really couldn't see a difference between the two drives other than that with the new firmware for the 6500 drive people noticed that it burned faster?

Unfortunetly if you have the LG drive, there is little you can do. I had a hard time finding any Firmware upgrade for the drive and I don't think that it did much of anything. The NEC drives are, only in my opinion, the best drives out there. They constantly write firmware upgrades for them and yes, they even wrote upgrades for single layer drives that turned them into Dual Layer drives. Example, the ND2500 drive was a single layer and with the right firmware it turned it into a Dual Layer that worked great.

Dave, the question I have is where can I buy either of the NEC drives? I bought my x6000 without the DVD-RW, but am having second thoughts about the wisdom of that decision. I have no need for DVD burning now, but may in the not-so-distant future.

I did a search on both of these NEC drive models and found little info, no vendors, and a blank search on Ebay. HP has nothing listed, and probably wouldn't want to buy from them anyway because of presumed inflated prices.

Hello, I was wondering if anybody of you knows when the X6000 Custom is estimated to be sold in Europe. I'd really need one of these notebooks to substitute with my desktop computer, but it looks like there is no availability here in Italy, nor in the rest of the UE.
Maybe there is another way I can purchase one, but none that I know of. I've also tried to contact the HP Customer Service but they weren't able to give me any useful information.

Do you have any idea how I can put my hands on this beautiful piece of notebook? [ :D]

    Thanks in advance.

    Yeah,

I just ordered a custom-built X6000 Yesterday. The whole thing came out to about $1600.00. I will take about 3 weeks to ship.

I started out ordering a ZD8000 but during the ordering process and talking with the dude taking my order, we ended up looking at the X6000 instead, and IÂ’m glad I did.

Initially, I was going to order a refurbished ZD8000 notebook which was totaling about $1400.00 with the 2-year HP Express Repair plan. It had most of what I wanted except the video card and amount of video ram. So, for $200.00 More bucks I was able to get a new one with everything I needed and wanted. (Cool deal).

If you buy any 17in. notebook, I recommend getting the high resolution display. For some reason most 17in notebooks selling for under $2000.00, have resolutions of around 1440X900. For a 17in display, this is not at all adequate. But, to get the high resolution display, you typically need to order a custom-built unit. Also, get the BrightView display different manufacturers call it my different names.

Here in the Chicago area, Microcenter has the X6000 for about $1500.00.

Ho, and if you apply for HP financing you can get 12 months No Payments (And No, I donÂ’t work for HP or Compaq). I think it is a good deal.

    --- I ordered the following configuration ---
    Compaq X6000
    XP Home
Intel Pentium 4 630 3.0GHz (800 MHz Front Side Bus)
    17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Wide Viewing (1680x1050)
    512GB DDR2 SDRAM, 533MHz (1x512MB)
80 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
    FREE Upgrade to 8X DVD +/- RW/R & CD-RW
    256MB ATI Mobility Radeon X600
    FREE Upgrade to 54g 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM
    12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
2-year HP Express Repair extended service plan

And at Newegg.com a better price

I did a search at Newegg for that model number but nothing came up, and a Google search that found little useful info. Go figure.

    Hey,
Does the x6000 come with a lightscribe drive? That looks kind of neat, I'd like to know how well it really works if you've got one.

--Just to let you know I found a 1GB stick of memory at for about $160,
I'm thinking of ordering the 256mb ram and just adding that to it...I figure that's a better deal for a GB and 1/4 vs compaq's 2x512 for $200

You can't use regular IDE HD's inside of the X6000. It requires the slim-line architecture. Standard desktop based HD's won't work. I believe right now Hitachi is the only maker of the 7200 RPM drive, I think 60GB is the biggest for this right now, I could be wrong. If you want to shop around for a HD for the notebook (which is a really good idea), keep in mind slim line and notebook hard drive. The form factor is way smaller, if you have a PC store near you I am sure they can show you the BIG difference, because there is.

NOTE: You can use a desktop HD with the X6000, just not inside. You can buy an enclosure which will turn the IDE to USB 2.0 or Firewire usually, to allow you to use it for access, so If you already bought a HD or want the extra storage, I would strongly recommend this option.

The key thing to understand is RPM is disk access time. It was already proven that the power consumption is the same for the older 4200 and 5400 RPM's VS the 7200 RPM, its just the older slower drives use older slower technology that needs more power for slower speeds.

Disk access time is important for the O/S applications and gaming alike, you can never go wrong with higher RPM. I would rather have a 60GB 7200 RPM then a 80GB 5400 RPM, because of performance.

    Hope this helps out. [:D]

    Hey,
Thanks for the information. Not long after you replied I checked compaq's site again and they are now offering a 60GB 7200RPM drive as one of the options when you customize. So I'll be going with that. For future reference though, would any 2.5" IDE Drive work in a x6000?

    Thanks

Your welcome, the 7200 is the best way to go in my opinion. I believe the 2.5in HD's are the slim line if I remember correctly. If all else fails look at the size. If its small then its the slim line. [ :D]

Can anyone tell me if this RAM will work in the x6000? Is there any reason I should not buy this? I'm only concerned because it is much cheaper than other comparable memory I've seen.

    Hey,
Does the x6000 come with a lightscribe drive? That looks kind of neat, I'd like to know how well it really works if you've got one.

    <hr height='1' noshade id='quote'></font id='quote'></blockquote id='quote'>

Careful with lightscribe, it is still new technology and the DVD's for it are quite expensive. Also, people with lightscribe are reporting very noisy DVD drivers (when lightscribe is in use).

Unless is a "must" for you.. don't bother with it.

Greg, I received mine one month ago with 2gb (2 x 1gb) and the spec was 533. The present list on the HP site shows that the 256's are 400, but 512 and 1gb sticks are 533. See here:

    http://tinyurl.com/w4rz

My original order email specifies the speed and type. If the spec has not changed sinc eyou ordered, and you ordered 1 x 512 stick, you should have 533.

Hi, have any of you experimeted any kind of problem with the keyboard of the pesario x6000?

My keyboard sometimes seems not to respond when I press the keys, even the numebers. Like when you are working and the machine is pocessing something that you press the keys and they dont respond. So Im chating and them I see that a lot of letters are missing.

I have had problems with the numeric keys above the letters too, they get crazy sometimes but I fix it reinstalling the driver.

Tell me if yuo have experimented these problems too...

    Hello,

So after reading all of the reviews in the 68 pages i am so happy i came here. I was going to buy a Dell Inspiron 6000 fully loaded, but it was just a little too much and not fast enough for me. I got all the extra help from everyone's post regarding the coolers and the best things for the computer. I am a big gamer and i need a lot of speed for my Flight Simulator 2004 from Microsoft. It requires high frame rates and other add-on graphics that i use. I ordered my computer today and it is coming loaded. I have to thank everyone in here for posting such good comments. Compaq keep them coming.

    Hello,

I read on the 65th page that one of the guys said that you cannot put in a 2.5 MB hard drive of your choice and that it has to be a Hitachi. Can someone please verify if this is true. I am going to take out the 40 GB hard drive and replace it with a 80 GB 7200 RPM Western Digital. It has a 2.5 MB removable drive so it should fit. Please let me know if i am wrong and i will not buy this hard drive. I found the drive on Tigerdirect.com for 62.99.

WD does not make 7200rpm notebook hard drives.

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=146129&Sku=THD-80BB%20P

If you are looking at the above hdd(see link), then it wont work since it is a desktop hard drive. You'll need 2.5" notebook hdd to replace the existing drive. Of course you can use the WD with the help of an external enclousure.

Hitachi & Seagate are the only manufacturers to have released 7200rpm notebook hard drives. They are both hard to find due to high demand. I dont think the seagates are available for retil yet. But you can get the Hitachi drives...
