Hello everyone... Recently my system has been shutting down by itself when I'm running on battery. I don't mean standy or hybernate, think of it as if pulling out the battery - where the system basically just dies with no warning. I'm suspecting maybe it's heat related as it does feels like it's running pretty hot... anyone had similar experience or have any idea why that may be happening? Thanks...

Question - Not sure if its appropriate here so I apologize in advance if it isn't.

I have a dv2000t (from august '06, so it has the sound card issue). I have vista ultimate on there (recently installed it). I also have a wireless networking issue. Basically, I can't copy large files from/to the vista machine. The network share disconnects for a couple of minutes midway through the copy of a +100gig file. This doesn't happen once i hardwire the laptop to the network.

I've tried MANY MANY THINGS... My latest understanding is that it seems similar to this kb article (but i have the problem not just with vista but with xp and even my hp media vault):

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932045/en-us

Anyone else run into this issue?

One way to rule out the OS issue is to boot through a linux distro and begin the copy process in linux.

Looks like a wireless issue to me since the issue does not appear when the laptop is hardwired.

Maybe you need to update the firmware on the wireless router or check with a different manufacturer..

Thanks for the suggestions, but I've pretty much done what you've suggested already.

    1) I know its not the laptop because I had xp on the machine until about 3 weeks ago and did not have this problem.

    2) I updated the bios on the latop: No Success

    3) I updated firmware on the router: No Success

    Thanks,
    Troy

Turning off aero make the system run much cooler... and run awhile longer on battery too. I'm just too used to the aero look now, that it bugs me to look at the standard desktop.

As a note to everyone, if you want to switch aero off quickly to save power, just change the power plan (by selecting the battery icon in the taskbar) from balanced or high performance to "power saver". It'll turn off aero, and keep your processor ramped further down unless you NEED the power. You should get 20%-or-so more battery life.

It sounds to me like a short or loose connection on the battery or the system's battery connector -- although the heat diagnosis seems very plausible too. Is there any pattern at all to when it happens? Is it only after a certain amount of time, or is it completely random?

What router do you have? Have you updated it to the latest firmware? I have a somewhat similar issue with a Linksys WRT54G R5 (which is going to be replaced by a router that isn't a POS). Any time I copy large files between two computers using wireless it pretty much kills the router, the internet connection, and often doesn't complete successfully. If it happens on both XP and Vista, I would assume it's not a Vista issue.

Edit: I see you posted while I was typing... so a router firmware update didn't help... what model is it though?

You can load an open source firmware on your wrt54g v. 5 which will make it tons better. After loading it on, it feels like a whole new router: no more random disconnects and restarting!

I would advice trying that first before buying a new router, it is much cheaper.

Ag76 -- I haven't made a final deicsion yet. I'm looking at getting either the Belkin F6D3230-4 or the Netgear WGU624. Both are wireless A+G routers. There are way too many wireless G routers in my area (I can connect to 4-6 networks from any of my PCs), so I really want to be able to at least use the Wireless A capability for my notebook. My PS3 and desktop will need to use Wireless G, but that can actually be a benefit when transferring filers to/from the notebook.

    + Rep for you!

I actually bought the router to use modded firmware on, but it was right when they released the v.5 and that's what I got. At the time, none of the firmware worked on that version. I glad you got me to go looking, as they now obviously have.

I just installed DD-WRT v23 SP1 micro, and so far all is well. I'll put off buying a new router to see if this firmware makes this router useable.

    Thanks again.

    Hello All,

I have finally made my selection of the DV2000T as my new notebook computer. Only thing I'm not sure of is which processor to get. Notebook will be used for net surfing, watching DVD's, Quicken, playing Call of Duty, Skype, and some spreadsheets, word processing. I plan on replacing Vista with XP.

Based on your experience with the DV2000, what would you recommend?

    Thanks

Mine is still INPROCESS, called COSTCO.COM today to ask why they have not charge my credit card. They say they only charge once the item is shipped. I also read in their policy that they add another year of warranty on top of the manufacturer's warranty. I guess I made the right decision by purchasing via COSTCO vice HP direct. I just can't stand this waiting...

Does anyone in here ordered from COSTCO.COM and if so how long did your order go from INPROCESS to SHIPPED?

I could be wrong, but I don't think the production time is affected by who you ordered the notebook from. I ordered mine from HP, and it was in process for close to 5 days.

How is your battery life? In power saver, I killed over 20% of my battery in a little over 33 minutes.

Is it because I have a T2060 and perhaps it sucks at saving battery?
Or is there anything I can do to get a little more battery life?

When I asked that question while configuring a dv2000t, I was told that the T5600 was worth the expense over the T5200. But others may have a different opinion.

Ok, think i isolated the problem... it's heat related. If i leave the notebook running on a hard/flat surface where the airflow is ample then it's fine... Thanks for replying.

Mine finally shipped and looks like it's stuck in INDI. I guess we'll see how long it will take to get out of Int'l shipment release status. At least it has been shipped... If it gets delivered Monday, I will not be home due to duty status but my wife will be at least be able to sign for it and maybe I can finally play with it on Tuesday.

Got mine a few days ago after it was stuck in a clearance delay in Indianapolis for 2 days.

So far it's so good! ;) I went the waxing route, it helps a lot with keeping the case's shiny appearance. I requested a non-brightview matte and got a clear screen with no dead pixels (system says it's QDS). I don't see a flicker when starting mine up, skywalker10, but I'll post if I do...

Vista basic and HP bloatware uses up more RAM and space than I like, but since I'm not a hardcore gamer, don't need all the HD space and Photoshop doesn't pause under a graphical load, I'm happy. The touchpad doesn't annoy me much at all, it doesn't seem to grab my finger or jump as reported (so far) and the keyboard is wonderfully quiet (and fully functional, so far). Mouse buttons are a little flimsy feeling, though I think their problem is they depress too far. Anyway, all's well and hopefully it'll stay that way.

I'm sad to say, but it looks like I'm going to be leaving the HP and DV2000t communities. I keep having bad luck with my DV2000s, and I decided it was time to move on to something a little more powerful and better built. I know there will be things about my ol' DV2000 I'll miss though.

I bought the "System Recovery DVD" when I ordered my dv2000t. Do I still need to burn a set of recovery discs, or is the DVD I ordered the same as the discs you can burn? (and could have saved some money had I known)

Second question, I've followed all the instructions given in various threads here to find my screen manufacturer. I'm really happy with the screen, but I'd like to know who manufactured it. I've gone into device manager, and looked at the monitor properties. It says I have a Generic PnP Monitor, and when I look at properties, it says the manufacturer is "standard monitor types". I've checked the detail tab, and can't find anything. I have the nVidia GeForce Go 7200 card, and can't find anything there. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, but I'm a little frustrated I can't find it. Any ideas?

    Glad to help :)

Maybe someone could help me out. I would've posted this question under the Vista thread, only I suspect it isn't really a Vista specific question but rather just a Windows setting I can't find.

When you open up a folder filled with images, you should see thumbnail previews of the pics. For some reason, all I can see instead of a thumbnail is an image representing the program that'll open the image (ex: "Canyon.bmp" is shown by a preview of an image showing paint and paintbrushes because Paint will open it. I want the thumbnail preview of the Grand Canyon image instead). How do you set the folder to get the thumbnail preview option?

Sorry if this is the wrong thread; I'll post it elsewhere if there's a better place.

In Windows Explorer, open the folder with the photos you want to see thumbnails. Click "View" and you should be able to set the option to see thumbnails. In XP, the option is "Thumbnails", but in Vista it looks like it is one of the "Icon" variations (large icon, medium icon, etc) Anyway, this is what I found in the sample photo folder of My Pictures.

They should be the same. But why not be safe, create a set of discs and store them somewhere safe in case you lose the original. Then you can delete the recovery partition if you want and not worry about having a restore option.

I can change the sizes and kinds of thumbnails just fine, but I end up with larger or smaller program images rather than previews of the actual pic.

    http://img377.imageshack.us/my.php?image=thumbnailproblemvd0.jpg

I posted a screenshot of my public image folder. You can see the graphic for Macromedia Freehand rather than the image preview. I can change the default program that opens the image, say to Paint or Microsoft Photo Gallery, but I just can't get the actual image preview to appear. Even the image preview bar on the right side just shows the program icon.

    Hi DV2000 users,

I'm thinking of buying DV2208 (core duo t2060, 1gb ddr, 120 gb, intel gma, vista home premium).
I am still hesitating, because I will need a nice LCD. Is the LCD of DV2208 MUCH worse than that found in Toshiba M100? Or other Toshibas? I had had HP 1740 17" LCD and it was really enough for me. Is DV2000 LCD comparable with it?

In addition, how about chassis finish. Does it wear off with time?
How about the battery life? How much can it survive with word, chat /low brightness? What about DVD playback? What's the charging time to 80-90%?

Will the integrated GMA950 work fine with Aero?

    What about typing experience?
What about overall build quality compared to hp nx7300?
Is there any annoying stuff about DV2000 you have experienced?

the LCDs used in the dv2000 series vary widely and which one you get just depends on your luck. you'll get an LCD manufactured by one of around six different manufacturers (QDS, AUO, SEC, CMO, NVD, LPL). some have better viewing angles than others, some have better color saturation and vividness than others, some have better brightness than others. people seem to avoid the SEC screen, although i've seen it in person and it looks pretty good, the only problem is that it isn't as bright as the others at max brightness, which may be a problem outdoors.

as for the GMA 950, it'll run aero perfectly fine.

Thanks! I didn't even notice that little hole.

Would you recommend a Kensington lock in a school/work environment? I've seen videos of people picking normal ones, but would anyone recommend a particular alarmed version, maybe?

Has anyone tried upgrading the RAM in a dv2000t? I kind of want to buy a 512mb version then upgrade it myself to 2 gigs. Anyone have experience with this?

Yes, I had 512megs initially and added a 1gig. Works great. Just make sure that both run at the same clock speed. 667MHZ - DDR2

And to my surprise, the original 512MB stick worked in dual mode with the 1GB G.Skill I bought from newegg as reported by CPU-Z.
