I'm hoping I'll just fall in love with it and it won't be a problem. Buying a laptop is too stressful to go thru it again. :)
I'm mostly concerned about having multiple design-related apps (DW, photoshop, etc.) open at once than the backend stuff like Apache, mySQL, ssh client, etc.
However, when I"m working out of the house, I can utilize an external monitor to extend the desktop. It's just the times when I'm working on-site that I'm concerned with.

Mine's in Green Bay, WI, currently out on the truck for delivery today!!! :)

What a bunch of obsessive, neurotic, impatient consumers we all are, hey.

I can't wait!!! I was going to take 1/2-day of vacation today, but depending on when the delivery is made I may not be able to. There's no way I'm leaving work (that's where I had it shipped to) without my new toy.

I too am hopeful that it's everything I hoped it will be, but if not I'm planning on returning it and buying the ASUS. I do however have high hopes and a lot of confidence in the HP, and the reviews on the new model support these aspirations.

Should the time come when I or some of us decide to return it, what's HP's policy on that? Is there a restocking fee? De we have a certain time frame/window in which to audition it to make our decision?

Just curious, but like I said I'm very confident it's going to be great!

You have 21 days from when you get the machine to change your mind... but I'II be sure to make that decision within 2 weeks, just to be sure. There is no restocking fee or shipping costs to you.... at least that's what I've been told by HP.

Congratulations to all you guys who received your dv4000! I must imagine what it does to you once you've ordered the laptop and having to wait for X days to be delivered. I live in Hong Kong and I've seen the dv4000 in a lot of the stores for 3 weeks now so we're lucky we don't have to wait if we want to buy one.
I'm looking to some user reviews for this particular laptop so after you've had your fun with it, could you post some comments?

GOT IT! Typing from it now. No real first impressions to speak of, as I'm still charging the batteries and clearing it of "crapware" that came preinstalled (of an 80 GB HDD I only had available 65 GB right out of the box - and I know part of that is due to OS files, but no way all of it).

One dead pixel in lower right portion, and although the screen looks great (bright, crisp) I can honestly say that I wish the resolution was higher - still looked fantastic with a DVD though.

More to come...just giddy I finally got it, and with a weekend ahead to fiddle.

I had a bear of a time getting my machine to connect to the net and I've got a problem with the USB mouse, need to unplug it and reattach it after every boot up, otherwise the machine doen't recognize it.

It seems quiet and not too warm, DVD's look good, can't see any bad pixels--haven't run a test on that yet. So far, pretty good, I may even keep it (after all, it's a moose good deal for the money) ;)

FYI, HP's corporate offices called me today to respond to my e-mail complaining about the customs hold up! We had a nice conversation that was much more pleasant because my machine had arrived! Nice touch to have them call back the next day... the moral to this tale seems to be contact HP Corporate, not HP Shopping, about complaints.

You're confusing GB and GiB. 80GiB (80 billion bytes) is read by windows as 73 GB (73 * 1024KB). So you're going from 73GB to 65GB, which means it isn't a 15GB loss (assuming you mean 80 to 65). Note that 8GB is acceptable for XP home and a little crapware.

My mouse keeps spazzing out in UT2004. Anyone else getting that? I think it may be the scroll pad. Any way to disable it when you're playing games?

I disabled the touchpad but my movement in UT2004 is still messed up. The keyboard movements get locked and lag intermittently. Any idea what it could be?

I saw your pics and found it interesting about that piano black gloss around the keyboard and media buttons like on the DV1000's. My DV4000 doesn't have it, I got the older one with the crappy Intel GMA 900 graphics. The plastic around my keyboard and media buttons is just matte plastic. I like that better, it doesn't show fingerprints or scrathes.

I did go ahead and order the Z70VA from Geared2play.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with the DV4000 I received, but after giving it some more thought, I think the the Z70VA is exactly what I'm really looking for at about the same as I paid for the DV4000, with the difference being that I didn't order any OS with the Asus (I'm retiring my winxp pro desktop to become a Linux server anyway).
    I think the DV4000 was $1666 with:
    WinXP Pro
    1280x800 display
    2.0Ghz
    1 gb RAM (2 sticks)
    80 gig HD (5400)
    X700
    DVDRW
    BT
6-cell battery (I missed the free addtl. battery deal)

    Z70VA:
    No OS
    1680x1050 display
    1 gb RAM (1 stick) (a plus)
100 gb HD (5400) (I realized after installing all my apps, etc. on the DV4000 that 80 doesn't go as far as it used to.)
    X700
    DVDRW
    2915 wireless instead of 2200
    BT
    8-cell battery
    $1708

I came down to how much I wanted the higher resolution and aesthetics of the z70va versus enjoying the 12-months no payments option with the HP.
Again, there's nothing wrong with the DV4000. I just have to be very picky since I'll be sitting in front of this laptop 40+ hours a week since I'm looking at this as my desktop replacement.
