That's a weird problem start by uninstalling drivers and putting stock drivers.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
and you also need not to accidentally uninstall the hdmi audio codec/drivers/whatever stuff when updating. -
Gonna give it a go. Right now im using just the stock drivers from HP so it might benefit from an update!
Just install it right over the top right? No need to uninstall anything or anything like that?
Great topic though -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
you install it over the top.
it may crash and you'll have to do that again (it does that for mine unless I start out with HP 10.6, then go to 11.2 then update 11.2 to 11.5/6/7/whatever)
'course I have a radiance envy 14 and they have some weird issues depending on the machine. -
Just installed 11.7 from Stock HP 8.771.1.0 and can confirm that they work just fine. Switching and all.
-
The switching is different though now, before if I took my Envy off the AC onto battery a box would come up asking if I want to switch and then you click ok or whatever the option was, screen would flicker and you'd be good to go...now though when I go onto battery, if I have programs open it doesn't change until they are all closed and once they are, it just switches automatically without any dialog box. Anyone else noticed this? It's a nice change but I just wish it would switch even though my web browser is open (which it used to. Going from my ATi card to Intel made it display fine but going back made FF not respond, i presume it's something to do with the hardware acceleration?).
So yeah, just something I noticed -
-
Ah good to know that im not going crazy! or a bug with my system
Thankfully my brightness hotkeys do still work though, it's one of the first thing's I checked once I had made the switch!
I presume this Dynamic Switching is the first steps of ATi moving towards Optimus' way of switching, without any user input? On the whole I don't mind it, I just wish it'd do it even if programs are running -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
yeah. switching is kinda automatic when you unplug the computer now (been that way since 11.4 or 11.5 or so for me)
I've got some hotkeys setup if I ever need to go back to the radeon quickly (alt+ctrl+g for dedicated, alt+ctrl+h for intel) -
Thanks for this topic ! It's great to be able to have the latest graphic driver for the Envy ^^
-
Weird part is that switching from dedicated to integrated graphics doesn't require confirmation. It just does it right away. I've decided to leave switching from integrated to integrated so it requires confirmation. -
Noob question:
My Envy 14 has ATI 5650. However, the Driver Version is: 8.771.1.0
And yet I want to update my Drivers for best quality.
So, I should go to Device Manager and then Uninstall my ATI 5650 and Intel HD Graphics. Then open the "stock hp drivers for 5650.rar" and install them. Then install the latest ATI update which is 11.7. (Or do I need to install all previous versions like 11.6, 11.5, and so on? )
Am I correct? -
-
If say 11.8 comes out later, will have to uninstall 11.7 , install stock AND THEN install 11.8?
Also, if i UNINSTALL drivers, won't my screen go black? -
-
So are there great performance increases with these new drivers?
I just came from the stock to 11.7. -
This is just for 11.7 release.
-
Thanks for the reply. I went to AMD's website to download version 11.7, but I received the message:
AMD Catlayst Mobility cannot be downloaded due to incompatible hardware/software on your computer.
The version of your graphics adapter is not supported.
Please contact your notebook manufacturer for a graphics driver update.
Here's a snapshot of my Graphics Software:

Any suggestions as to what to try next? I have the Envy 1110nr. -
You need to download the installer directly from the first page.
The installer on AMD's site is just a dummy downloader application that will deny you if you're on a computer with switchable graphics. -

I didn't think this question warranted a whole new thread so I figured this would be the best place to ask.
What about updating the iGPU/Intel driver? Is it basically the same procedure, ie install the stock HP set then update Intel right over it? -
Intel doesnt update the integrated graphics as much but I checked intel's website and it said:
Update: The HP driver contains Intel driver version 8.15.10.2189 (12/03/2010) and the latest driver from intel is 8.15.10.2361 (4/13/2011). Sounds minor. -
Thanks again ironman43.
I just followed your steps and successfully updated my ATI driver.
Driver Packaging Version 8.872-110707b-121824C-ATI
Catalyst Version 11.7
Provider ATI Technologies Inc.
2D Driver Version 8.01.01.1171
2D Driver File Path /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/CLASS........
Direct3D Version 7.14.10.0847
OpenGL Version 6.14.10.10907
Catalyst Control Center Version 2011.0707.2346.40825
My Steps:
1)Downloaded the "stock hp drivers for 5650.rar"
2)Downloaded "11-7_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe" ;but did not run either files yet.
3)Extracted the "stock hp drivers..."
4)Went to Control Panel - Device Manager - Display Monitors. Uninstalled both the Intel and AMD.
5)Ran "Setup" program in the extracted "Stock hp..." folder.
6)Once completed, I restarted the computer.
7)Then I ran the file "11-7_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe" and followed all steps within.
8)Done.
As for any performance improvements. I need to test it out for a while, but so far no issues. Also, I do use a second monitor with my system for viewing movies and playing games. (It's a Dell 2311H) Often I use extended desktop or I switch to Dell monitor only. -
no problem!

update: 11.8
-
Alright, here's my strange driver updating experience. I started out with my stock drivers, 1st gen.
I first tried 11.8 and got an "install package error". So then I tried 11.7, and got the same error. Then I tried 11.5b, and got the same error, but then the installer freezed.
So then I tried to end the process, and a windows message came up asking me to allow or not allow ATI to update my drivers. I picked 'allow' and my screen messed up a few times, switched resolutions a few times, and 2 mins later, it all stops and the the installer closes.
Then I checked my driver version and its updated to 8.850.6.0! So far my switchable graphics aren't working, but I might just have to reboot.
Why in the world is it this hard to update a driver? I've never had this many problems, even with printers -
> uninstall > stock download/install > 11.7 download/install -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
if you're like me you have to do
get rid of everything (uninstall) > stock install > 11.2 install > whatever you want above 11.2 install -
Aight guys, great work on keeping this updated
Just wondering, has anyone else had problems with the switchable graphics since updating to 11.8? Mine seems really tempremental in when it'll change and when it doesn't (for instance it doesn't change if I take my laptop off AC whilst the lid is closed and the laptop is in "sleep"), it also won't allow me to force change which card it's using via CCC
Might have to reinstall -
I have 11.8 and none of the issues you are having happen to me. I can still force change with the hotkeys.
Something very cool however happened around 11.7/11.8. The graphics now switch even if I have applications open unlike before where it asks me to close all running applications. This sometimes screws specific applications like firefox, but a simple manual switch back restores everything. For example, I have firefox, windows media player, and live mail open and I plug the laptop in, it automatically switches with all the applications open. Only firefox has problems with this as some loaded graphics in firefox dissappear (a manual switch back fixes this) but for most other applications, the switch is smooth and automatic while they run. -
It kind of did something similar for me with 11.7 but with 11.8 it'll only change my graphics card if I close all my applications (i've just tried taking it off AC/High performance GPU with Firefox and MSN open and it didn't automatically change).
I might reinstall the lot tonight, won't do any hard and at the very least i'll end up back where I am right now.
What's the difference between the 1st gen Stock and 2nd gen? I have a first generation Envy and I use the ATI/Intel drivers off of HP's driver page (sp48434.exe) -
I want to update my drivers but I just want to make sure I have everything right so nothing gets screwed up. Seeing as I have never updated it, I assume I have the "stock" driver (version 8.741.1.1000) currently installed.
So can I just use the link on this thread and install 11.8 directly over my current version? Is that the best way to do it? -
Small chance you might face a problem if you have an early gen 1 where you have to go:
But again the black out issue during installation was way back during the 11.2/11.3 update when I did it, maybe the problem does not happen with latest update. -
I installed 11.8 over my stock driver and it now says I have driver version 8.881.0.0 (date 7/28/2011)
Is that the right one or should it say 11.8? And if not, should I just try installing 11.8 again? -
-
Alright I don't understand... When I download the latest 11.8 drivers, I get the file 11-8_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe. Then I open that, which upacks the download, then a new window pops up to install catalyst, and thats it. It doesn't install any drivers or anything. What the heck am I doing wrong?

Hey guys... So I actually had a perfectly working stock driver that switch graphics card and everything. But i decided to update thinking it will be better, and now I think I made it worst. I started by just directly trying to install 11.8, but it gave a FAILED! So I read some more from this thread and someone suggested to UNINSTALL BOTH INTEL and ATI 5650 from Device manager which I did, then I extracted stock HP drivers for 5650, and opened "RVideo" folder and clicked "Setup" application, after that I installed 11.2 which failed, then installed 11.8 which also failed.
The weird thing is, after all this, I went to Device Manager and its showing AMD Radeon HD 6500M/5600/5700 Series so double click and it currently says Driver Version 8.881
BUT!!.. now I cant switch graphics card! And Intel isn't showing up at Device Manager... any ideas?? -
-
Okay, so, I followed the directions here and uninstalled the drivers, installed the stock HP drivers, and then installed 11.8, and things worked at first. Now, a few hours later, ans the system won't switch GPUs.
Anybody have any idea how to get switching to work again? -
I have a dv6-3143us with the HD 5650 and switchable graphics. The (latest) stock driver from HP is 8.771.1.0, just like the latest 1st Gen for the Envy 14. Will these work for me? I want to confirm before attempting anything (already spent several days trying to get the latest drivers working). I'm guessing I'll have to do the stock => 11.2 => 11.8? Thanks!
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
it SHOULD work.
you can try just going to 11.8 first to see what happens but otherwise if you wanna not deal with CCC crashing and burning for one boot you can try 11.2 first yeah. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
-
When my frustrating level reduces a bit, I'll give it another shot. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
I always had to go through 11.2 first or else..
well. strange things happened (usually meaning I had to install 11.8 or whatever 11.x that was above 11.2 twice).
so you could try that later on. If that doesn't work then I dunno what's going on. -
Okay, thanks, I'll give it a try.
-
this is probably a stupid question but can someone tell me how to uninstall 11.8 and go back to stock because it seems like im getting lower FPS since ive updated
-
Alright I just went ahead and took off all video drivers, went stock and then upgraded straight to 11.8 with zero issues:
Before starting, you have to close all programs.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
1. open device manager
-------------------------------------------------------------------
2. uninstall intel hd drivers and ati video drivers by right clicking them (make sure to choose delete driver software when uninstalling so windows doesn't reinstall the drivers you are getting rid of)
3. type "Uninstall a program" in start menu and open it, find an ati application and click uninstall, you get an option to uninstall, repair or uninstall ALL ati software. choose the last to get rid of everything from the current drivers.
4. restart computer
-------------------------------------------------------------------
5. wait a couple minutes and see if windows installs the drivers again... make sure in device manager, the drivers say generic vga drivers and not Intel HD and ATI video.
6. if they do say intel and ati again, repeat step 2 and restart computer.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
8. download and install the stock drivers for your model
9. restart and confirm driver version in device manager
-------------------------------------------------------------------
10. download and install latest drivers from this thread ( currently 11.8)
11. restart and done.
------------------------------------------------------------------- -
-
and also do you know why my Envy freezes when i use fixed graphics mode and use the Radeon card but in dynamic mode using a program that is also assigned the Radeon card my Envy doesnt freeze?
-
what is the difference between the stock 1st and 2nd gen?
