yes, same thing with 2/3 finger taps.

what's the natural distance between your fingers? what angle do you use your finger with to point? flat or pointy? how would you distinguish between 2 fingers and 3 fingers if all you are detecting is a "single large finger"? what is you used your thumb instead? should that be counted as 2 fingers or one?
and now ask all of those questions to the person nearest to you, do they give the same answers?
it's not just a simple thing as if area > x, then fingers = 2. i'm sure apple has a complex algorithm that takes in the pressure area as well as the pressure intensity at each point to determine whether it is 1 finger or 2. it's not something that you can just add as a 1 line code and expect it to work for everyone. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
there's also the fact that it seems to be a limitation of the trackpad as well.
it cannot tell where two fingers are, only that there are two fingers on the pad.
this is part of the reason why you can't get a deadzone for the buttons down at the bottom. -
The trackpad on my Envy 14 stopped working after I shut the lid and opened it back up again some time later while a USB wireless mouse was plugged in. Now it will not respond even when powering on with no USB devices plugged in.
I've read that I could try completely uninstalling the trackpad drivers, but I'm not quite sure how to do that.
Has anyone had this problem and/or have suggestions?
Thanks! -

Question:
Is there any program or setting that I may have overlooked in the newest synaptics update that would allow me to use a three finger swype; left or right, as back/forward buttons similar to a mac. I specifically find this useful when browsing in firefox/safari.
I have come accustom to using my mac so much and now that I am giving my Envy some more love its hard to get adjusted to.. -
This is my first post here, thanks for this thread it's fantastic.
I was having my issues with the touchpad on such a great laptop. The 2 finger scrolling is shoddy at best but most you know this already, although for some reason the very same Synaptics driver seemed to have better results on my old Dell. Once I installed Envy Touchpad it has helped scrolling tremendously.
Regardless, I wanted to know if there was as setting with the Envy Touchpad application to allow for you to have a finger on one of the "button" areas at the bottom of the pad while having another finger in the "mouse" area.
With the regular Synaptics settings it allows for this but once I launch Envy Touchpad if I have a finger on a button at the bottom it starts scrolling when I try to move the pointer.
I apologize if this was answered in this gargantuan thread. I tried to search through it but I couldn't find any answer. Thanks in advance. -
Im having trouble highlighting with one finger dragging and one finger pushed down on the left click button. Im using TwoFingerScroll for my scrolling and have disabled the scrolling in the synaptics settings as to not conflict with it.
Can anybody advise me how to fix this issue?
I can highlight with two fingers on the touchpad and one clicking but i would like to have a single finger. -
NO, this thing is awesome! I originally couldnt be bothered to route through this massive thread to see if anyone had come across the problems i had with TwoFingerScroll but when I found your post i was so glad. -
Application gestures > Three-Finger Flick.
Also, the envyTouchpad app has this feature but I find the Synaptics flick to work more reliably -

Just wonder about Your impressions. See any improvement regarding two/three finger tap recognition? -

Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum and this thread has been really helpful to me! The envy trackpad isn't nearly as bad as I heard.
I'm using reil's app with some Synaptics settings. It's working beautifully, except my two and three finger taps don't work. I have fiddled around with all the settings in both reil's app and in synaptics and can't get them to register. I definitely have my fingers the right distance apart, and in reil's app when I "observe" it registers a two or three finger tap, but nothing happens. I want my two finger set to middle click and three finger set to right click.
Synaptics settings:
Tapping - enabled
Three finger swipe - disabled
Three finger press - disabled
envyTouchPad settings:
1 finger: left
2 finger: middle
3 middle: right
Single tap interval threshold: 50
Maximum finger distance travel: 100
Maximum w threshold: 16
Maximum x threshold: 100
Does anyone have any pointers? (no pun intended) -
@doublefeet:
Maybe try to use the same settings as I do? :
Code:1 finger : disabled (it's already set in Synaptics, so doubling it causes problems) 2 finger : right 3 finger : middle Single tap interval threshold : 113 Maximum finger travel distance : 58 Maximum w threshold : 30 Maximum z threshold : 163
-
Awesome it works
I was getting double clicks before, with both synaptics and envyTouchPad registering. My touch sensitivity was also at max, which wasn't helping. I turned it down half past the first notch in Synaptics.
Can you explain what the maximum w and x thresholds are in envyTouchPad? I have messed around with them but don't feel much of a difference. -
No idea
I just kept adjusting those settings until I got a result I felt comfortable with. Don't believe it could be set any better (to suit my needs, at least)
The same went to scrolling - I can also provide You with my scrolling settings, if you'd like. -
Any way one of these programs could make the three finger press activate a windows function, such as Alt-tab. Although I don't know how you would navigate through the tabs, maybe moving fingers left or right.
-
a curiousity i have, does someone have access to a hp laptop with the clickpad thats not the envy 14?
does my software work on that or have i made it envy 14 specific?
convik: i don't really remember exactly, but i think you can alt+tab and alt+shift+tab with my app with three finger scroll. i'm not sure why you would want a tap to activate it since it would just flash the switcher. -
i am using envy touchpad ,whenever a two finger scroll a webpage it zoom in or out sometimes?
-
is it pinch zoom settings of synaptics that are conflicting?
How synaptics driver vs. should i use? the first one i remember had some features like tap zones which i cant find in the latest vs.
Which utility is the best: envy Touchpad or Two finger scroll ?
What solutions have you implemented for right click and middle click and using which software?
although i was using envy14 for a long time but its today i harnessed the potential of these utilites -
-
okay did a little reasearch
after seeing the performance of these utilites
-disabled pinch zoon --was conflicting with two page scrolling
-disabled two finger scrolling in Synaptics
Q1. IS coasting and edgemotion scrolling possible with two-finger scroll?
I have found Two finger scroll to be better than envy trackpad. The rightclick in envy touchpad happens after a double tap two singer. In TFS it happens almost instantaneously. For middle button i am using One+One Finger in TFS -
Hi guys. I just got this laptop, and I love it... except the trackpad like everyone else. I feel like my issue is a little different though. I don't really have too much problem with two finger scroll or anything like that, as I usually use a mouse anyway. But the one problem is that on my previous laptop, when I used my touchpad, I would keep my right thumb horizontally on the left mouse button area of the trackpad, while I used my index on the pointer area.
Unfortunately, doing that on the E14 causes have a seizure on the screen unless my thumb is PERFECTLY still for the entire time that it's on the LMB area of the touchpad, which is hard to do.
Is there any driver addition/external program/ANYTHING that will allow me to simply make the "button" areas of the trackpad a "dead zone", meaning that any movement in those regions won't be detected, but instead they simply act as left and right mouse buttons?
Thanks! -
the older synaptics driver had tap zones

Can somebody recommend good settings for 3-finger middle click. With the envyTouchPad app I have to click 3 fingers REALLY fast otherwise it won't register.
Also, you can't seem to rest your finger on the left click button while using the mouse. Any tips? Thanks! -
i am using the top-right tap zone ..i am just trying the new synaptic driver . may be i will use this settings along with TWF's One+One for Middle Click(Opening New Tabs)
-
Thanks warnec. Your settings got my two finger and three finger taps working!
-
Hi everyone,
I just did a clean install and am using the regular synaptic drivers. No reils or anything.
For some reason my two fingers doesn't register as a right click. Is there a setting for me to enable the tap two finger for right click?
Again I am using the initial synaptic settings I have not changed anything. I did see that windows updated synaptic to the latest windows update driver.
Thanks -
Ok, I'm going to just give up trying to find some of this stuff and just ask the total noob questions...
Before I start tweaking the trackpad with add-ons/etc I want to just try to get the basics down. My trackpad works better than the one in the store and it's installed level so we're better than I expected.
Can't turn trackpad off/on (left top corner) without damn near hitting it with a sledgehammer. Is there a way to fix this? Honestly took several tries with my fist to do it -once.
In JJB's basic set-ups post it says
Thanks -
i've tried to install reil app but i keep getting this error even after installing the MIcrosoft C++ package. The program can't start because MSVCR100.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. I did not do a clean install or remove any drivers, it is a brand new envy

Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile for Windows 7 x64-based Systems (KB982670)
Installation date: 2/5/2011 7:51 PM
Installation status: Successful
Update type: Recommended
. yeah i already installed it. -
edit: never mind, uninstalled everything related to the touchpad, reinstalled the drivers from the swsetup folder and all is well.
----
Need some help. I have the touchpad working great using the "envyTouchpad" add-on. However, after uninstalling the touchpad driver that came installed and installing the 15.2.7 driver from Synaptics, the LED on the touchpad that is supposed to enable/disable the trackpad 1) does not work and 2) is lit when the trackpad is on and turns off if I manually disable the trackpad from the control panel.
I made sure that in the "corners" section that the top left is completely disabled, just the way it used to be. But I still can't double-click the LED to disable/enable the touchpad.
Any ideas?? Thanks! -
I messed around with the settings above, but there's no noticeable difference.
Using most current drivers with reli's app. -

Has anyone been tweaking reil's app for iPhone/iPad-like tweaking. I'm trying to emulate the experience of the iPad scrolling with this program but was wondering if anyone else has finely tuned settings already.

I'm not quite sure what it is referring to, and I don't think I saw an option for it in synaptic. Thanks!
