Its in Synaptics options if you look around (Activations zones were added in later drivers though so you may need to update)

Thanks for the reply Mike. May I ask which version you're using? I'm using the Jan. 22 drivers (15.1.22), and I've tried updating to the newest drivers. Unfortunately, when I try installing it "is not a valid win32 application". I've tried the 32 and 64 bit versions. Other users seem to be having trouble with the newest drivers, according to the Envy Drivers thread.

I can't seem to find a working link to Reil's drivers.

    That would be greatly appreciated!

I'm getting a weird error with reil's app, that's saying that it's "unable to initialize trackpad! Exiting..." any idea what's the deal with that? I installed the framework, and the C++ and put the required .dll file that wasn't being found in the envy touch folder, and folder within the folder, that was from the media fire link.

    Gahhh

inertia scrolling is when you flick your finger and the mouse moves all across the screen? if so, then yes, the trachpad does do that, they call it 'glide'. it also allows you to do the 2 finger coasting, pinch to zoom etc. it also lets you bounce the pointer off the edge of the screen too...which i find kinda cool. its all in device setting ---> settings, in the synaptics menu.
its not as great as apples, but its good enough.

He means inertia scrolling like the iphone's scroll- flick once, and the page will keep sliding down. This isn't a hardware limitation, this is a software one. Reil's app and twofingerscroll will add inertia scrolling.

The coast option in the Synaptics settings does this as well, albeit with a different implementation. Like the iOS intertial scrolling, inertial scrolling with Reil's app is not continuous - i.e. it fades or slows down to a stop after a bit. The coast feature, however, is continuous - i.e. it maintains a constant scroll until it reaches the end of the scrolled item. I use both because I like the smooth algorithms in Reil's app but also like it to be continuous.

I tried multiple settings until I liked the way it eased and easeInQuad was the one I liked best.

riel, any chance of adding a "reverse scroll direction" option to make it scroll up when you go down on the trackpad? Obviously only if its easy to implement and you have time. I figure some might enjoy it.

i guess people don't read the txt files i write, the easing algorithms were taken from robert penner's easing equations. google it and he has a website that shows the difference between them.

so an announcement i guess. i ordered a macbook pro today and i will be giving my envy to my cousin sometime in the next month or so. because of this, i no longer plan to update the touchpad software (not that i've been changing it anyway) because i won't have an envy.

so there's been one feature that's been requested by a few people that i refused to do because i wouldn't want to run it on my own system because it uses an evil keyboard hook. but since i won't be running it, i decided to implement it as a farewell gift of sorts.

    so two new features:
-an option to disable the touchpad for a configurable amount of milliseconds after pressing any key.
-options to reverse x or y scrolling (i don't get why anyone would use this but ok).

this has been uploaded to the prerelease folder.

i expect that people will request some tweaks to the keyboard disabling touchpad option since i haven't really thought it through and just kludged it together tonight. i'll probably be a bit more willing to implement tweaks, bug fixes and stuff until i get my macbook pro since i won't be able to dev it afterward. so feel free to suggest stuff. if you are going to say bugs, please provide steps/directions to reproduce it.

Congrats on the new MBP and, on behalf of the countless people who would be tearing their hair out without your app, thanks for your contributions to the Envy community.

Any chance of making the app open source after you stop dev so that others can take up further dev?

So I just purchased my new Envy 14 and I am loving it so far. My only complaint (like others) is the less than perfect touch pad. I have been reading this forum a lot these past few days and I downloaded Reil's envy touchpad application. I generally like it much more than the synaptics program for two finger scrolling, but I have a couple problems/questions.

When I start my computer a dialog box opens up that asks me to run the envy touchpad program. That is a little annoying to have to do that every time I boot my computer up. Does anyone else have that problem?

Also when I scroll up and down in a web page or a document it seems to jump around a little. It seems like if it does jump around it usually jumps to the bottom of the web page. Does anyone else have this problem? I have tried adjusting my settings around and it still does this. I have made sure that the synaptics two finger scroll option is disabled.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions on these two issues.

I'm using the settings by eafd, but I seem to be having some trouble with two finger scrolling. About 30% of the time, the scrolling does not register. What would I need to do to change this? I can't seem to regularly get two finger scrolling working.

I'm using my 3rd and 4th finger with about an inch of space in between. My fingers are somewhat horizontal. I'm pretty sure it's not hardware if we're using the same settings. Do you have the latest drivers?

PS: I'm a fellow dev, and even though I have no plans of mantaining your app as I work 95% of the time on Linux, it would be nice to have the option :). Please consider open sourcing it!

i guess i'm a little confused here, the source code has been available since when i first posted the application. its the 7z file with the -src appended to the name in the mediafire folder. its a visual studio 2010 solution.

also, i don't think anyone has ever intentionally downloaded the source code to do anything, at least i haven't seen any activity in this thread about it nor have i received any questions about the code.

No need to be confused, is a simple case of me not looking carefully  (you're right about people not reading README's).

No one's ever downloaded the src probably because it works wonderful as-is. Even so, if in the future some library breaks it, it's nice to know that the code is there to pick from where you left off.

    Again, thank you!

I haven't checked this forum in a few months, but I've been holding off on getting an Envy until the touchpad becomes more usable. Has there been any progress creating deadzones over the touchpad buttons so one can rest their thumb on one of the buttons and not have it jump around?

Just did a clean install, downloaded reil's 2-finger scroll software, but can't seem to figure out why the hell the bloody software is 1. composed of so many files and 2. unable to be installed.

What's going on? I don't remember the software being this fragmented!

you probably downloaded the source code. the mediafire folder has a 7z file of the source code and an exe file. end users want the exe file, developers wants the 7z file.

i'll be getting my mbp this weekend, so this is likely to be my last post about my software. hopefully someone will take it over and not hack up my code too much :)

one last curiosity i have is whether it runs on anything with the same synaptics trackpad (like the other HP laptops) or whether its specific to the envy series but i doubt someone with an envy would also own a dm4 or something.

anyway, the final update is a minor one, ctrl, alt, shift, win, context (menu) do not disable the touchpad. its in the prerelease folder.

i've seen comments about the multifinger stuff not triggering, thats because the synaptics touchpad only track multiple fingers if there is some space between them. if you keep your fingers too close, synaptics software detects it as one finger.

to everyone who hates the envy touchpad, yeah, synaptics software does suck pretty bad. don't expect much and i doubt you'll get much from synaptics. it seems they are good at mimicking the form of the apple touchpads but are unable to understand that the experience of the software and drivers are more important than the hardware. so if you hate it, you're probably better off returning the laptop unless you're willing to try new things. no one will be able to write or develop something miraculous.

Anyone having problems with drop-down menus with Reil's touchpad software? Whenever I tapclick a drop down menu, the menu closes really quick before I can select anything. The only thing that works is using the "physical" click. What part of the software is causing this? I want to see if I can disable it so that dropdowns will work.

Disable tap to click in Reil's. You have tap to click enabled in Synaptics, causing both softwares to trigger a click. This makes you double click everything.

This is the post I dreaded!!!

I just got my Envy a couple of weeks ago, and the trackpad is, well, you all know! But whether I'm braindead or not (the jury is out), I cannot get Reill's driver to work for me - at all. I read all the instructions, believe I downloaded and installed the right file, but NOTHING!

I'm sure I'm making rookie/noob/boob mistakes, but has someone perhaps posted a "
reil's drivers for Dummies" installation guide, other than what's on the last page of this thread? Or, does someone recommend a different set of home-growns? Many thanks.

(It is true that I have my Envy up for sale - a very long story as to why - but I had come to the decision to sell other computers (need the $, bad) and keep the Envy, until my first full session using it, and there is no way I can keep it with the stock drivers.)

Don't move the file after you run it or else it wont start up with windows. Theres examples of how to put the settings on the first page of this thread. You should turn off settings that are redundant such as taping. I turned mine off in the reil app. It registers a single tap as 2 otherwise. Theres nothing else thats really difficult about setting it up.

The trackpad is not perfect for me either but its better with reils app. I don't know if this is due to hardware limitations or bad drivers as reil stated. I just hope its driver related so they can fix it.

Bump this back from December! These settings were a life saver for me. Before now, I felt I had absolutely no choice but to sell my Envy because, as beautiful as the Radiance is and as wonderful as I think the keyboard, backlighting and overall design is, only now can I truly enjoy using this - as a computer!! (vs. as a device used solely to demo beautiful hi def video! For some reason, I couldn't get reil's drivers to work for me, but things are just fine with these setings. Nicely done. Thanks much. +1 for you!

Thanks for the advice. I found MikeWarner's post from December using the Synaptics drivers only, but with his precise settings for each one. It results in a very much more usable trackpad, pretty much like any other Synaptics - never loved 'em, never hated 'em. Not hating an Envy clickpad - that's great news. I just might keep this once my brand new 256 GB SSD arrives, courtesy of HP. :D

Seems that other things have a disable timer, so the really quick double clicking still only triggered one click on things other than menus. This happened to me the first time I downloaded Reil's

    HOLY MOLY

Newest Synaptics drivers (off of synaptics.com) allow clicking ANYWHERE on the trackpad, macbook style :D

(or this could just be a glitch as I haven't noticed it before. lemme reboot and check)

    edit: yes, it still works

Hmm, mine added the new option menu for settings, but click anywhere doesnt work. Also the 3 finger flick and 2 finger scroll dont work for me.

Actually 2 finger worked after restert, but the anywhere clicking still doesnt work. Do they make it so you can two finger click to do right click in that case?

Wow. What on Earth is Synaptics thinking with its crappy software? Reil's touchpad software makes the scrolling as smooth as it should be!

They really should be hiring this guy to do their work. Offer him a lump sum of $1,000,000 to design the software.

Can you still disable the trackpad via double tap on the upper left corner? If I recall correctly that was previously a limitation of using the drivers from the Synaptics site as opposed to the drivers from HP.

Ya you can, but the little sound and pop up visual is gone.

Ok, I did as someone else did, which was disable tapping in Synaptics and allowing reil's software to take that function. Only problem is that sometimes, the touchpad locker software I found via Google doesn't seem to always activate to prevent my palm swipes from causing scrolling mayhem.
