Nvm...I figured out that the slider in afterburner has a maximum of about 135-165MHz higher than your current core clock setting at the start of the program. So when you apply your clock settings(of lets say 500), then close MSI and reopen it, the slider will then go all the way up to 680. Rinse and repeat if you want access to higher core options, though I don't think they're at all feasible for our poor little undervolted cards. Just thought I'd let you all know for those of you who have already run up against the former 585 ceiling.

    Awesome! :)

In that case, would I of all people actually benefit from keeping the GPU underclocked and undervolted for lower temp control purposes?

    *shrugs*

dunno. also it may be more like 60s in actual gameplay that may drop to the 40s when there's a huuuuuuuuge mess.

unless blizz doesn't fix what went wrong in phase 2. then well...that'll suck

'course a huge mess would be a mothership cloak (hits fps by about 5-10 depending upon your settings and stuff), nuke going off, and a 200/200 food zerg army running around doing things

You dont need 60fps for SC2. 40 feels perfectly smooth. anyways, I get 40-60fps on all high (except shadows) at 1680x1050. I am very happy with SC2, and cant wait for tomorrow night!

30FPS should be fine if it stays @30, cuz that's like playing ps3 on tv.

consoles must get more than 30fps, or its some sort or difference. 30fps on an xbox looks MUCH smoother then 30fps on a computer screen.

I think it's to do with how they limit the rate of turn/camera scrolling so any object doesn't really move far enough in few enough frames to ghost and make it feel choppy. On another note, the PS2 was locked at 60fps for most titles so I'm sort of doubting the 30fps thing for the PS3/360

ps3/360 games it depends on the game.

    some are 30 fps

    some are 60 fps

    some have slowdown anyway

    Hey,

I've been using steam for a while now running all of my games. However, I started up TF2 once and it warned me about using integrated graphics and how they were not supported. My laptop was plugged in, charged at about 30% and had dedicated graphics on. Now, I can't get a single steam game to work with my integrated graphics. I have restarted the computer, switched from dedicated to integrated back to dedicated and **** with all of the settings in steam to get it to work.

Whenever i play CSS or something like that, everything lags to hell and looks terrible

I have also been having problems with games. My laptop has been great up until last night.

The night before I was at a friends house and played bfbc2 with no problems

Next day I try and play css and get massive lag spikes and huge fps drops. Bfbc2 was completely unplayable. It had been storming, but my internet seemed fine.

Video stress tests seemed fine. I am going to try and run bfbc2 single player tonight and see if its unplayable.

My temps were alright. Cpu maxed at 60c. Weird thing was when my comp was idling one core was at about 50c and the other was at the normal idle temp for me of about 30c.

    Any Ideas?

Why don't we all send emails to HP in addition to threadjacking? :]

HP Executive Team: Mark Hurd email

What's kind of lame about this tho is that it says email Hurd, but in the description, he won't be reading it himself. It seems that it might be transferred around to people that might be able to do something though. So, I think it might be useful to email through the link in addition to threadjacking gladstone posts :D If there are enough emails that say the same thing, people over at HP might notice.

Thing is, I can tell you from experience, nothing is going to happen. But I know it feels good to complain. Whatever reason HP had for spec'ing out the lower end ATI GPU is written in stone. It's just not critical enough for them to do anything about.

If anything, they'll take the complaints under advisement for the next iteration (gen 2) of the Envy 14.

Just like they took the heat complaints on the Envy 15 and incorporated the improvements into the Envy 15 gen 2.

So why is the dedicated graphics card acting so sluggish all of a sudden for so many people? It has gotten to the point that I have to use the integrated graphics card instead of the dedicated one

I've noticed that if I switch to dedicated graphics after I boot (via the system tray), it doesn't always work correctly. For some reason, I see the ATI logo in the system tray but it's obvious when I play a game that it is running on integrated graphics. Kinda defeats part of the purpose of switchable graphics if you have to reboot your computer to utilize them. Maybe this is fixed in the 10.7 drivers (i was using 10.3)

would they listen and try to resolve the issue before it gets to the mass public?

its not like there gonna release envy 14 (gen 2) anytime soon..

catalyst 10.7 direct link (since you can't reach it any other way on the envy)

same story as cat 10.6. doesn't officially support switchable graphics.

ati stop teasing us with the beta drivers that do support it.

edit: whelp. straight installing from HP 10.3 to these 10.7s just really pissed my computer off.

I'll try going through the beta instead again.

Magus, are you uninstalling the previous drivers before you install the new ones? That's been working well for me, though I went from beta to 10.7(uninstalled beta, then installed 10.7 after reboot)

    having my own problems.

uninstalled drivers. got a black screen on boot.

got a black screen on the next boot.

had to go to safe mode and run system restore to fix things.

edit: Got the beta drivers working. 3dmark06 jumped up by like 3 points over the 10.6...which makes sense since 10.7's only improvements were to AA and AF performance and I can't turn that on in 3dmark06 (nor are you supposed to when posting these results)

AMD clock tool still not working even on 10.7 ?
Has anyone tried to use the acer or sony equivalent hybrid drivers ?
Maybe the AMD clock tool fails on HP drivers only. Or they also fail on newer drivers.
Someone need to try if AMD clock tool would work on an older version of the catalysts. Like 10.1 or 10.2

    it didn't work on 10.6

lemme try it on the 10.7 beta.

also it may be crashing on the bios or something if it looks at that 'cause nothing can read what the bios is other than the CCC

edit: Crash. Also someone managed to get msi afterburner to show higher clocks. set it at something above 450. close the program. reopen the program. hey now the limit is higher than 585.

9K? What the heck are their overclocks? They must be at like 700MHz GPU and 900MHz RAM. Im sure temps are smokin hot though.

I'm going to fuss around with overclocking and 3DMarks, etc tonight. Making backup DVD's now, man is that a long painful process. LOL. Going on 30 minutes for first DVD of four. USB flash drive sounds great, but don't exactly want to spend $30 on a 16GB to backup. Too bad you can't backup to an external HDD.

Updated my video drivers and still nothing.

No viruses etc. according to nod32

The temps between each core differ by at least 10c at all times.

Lag spikes during the fps drop were better. I isolated the problem to my computer because bfbc2 sp was unberibly choppy

Why doesn't Acer issue a 1600x900 screen for the 4820TG? Then I'd definitely consider that one.

well the 4820TG doesn't have the awesome cooling system for one.

and two. I dunno why not. I'd totally of grabbed a 1600x900 3820TG if it existed or hell 1440x900 or something above 1366x768

Stock drivers - Everything working fine ~6800 3dmark

Tried disabling intel card and going to 10.6

Many many crashes and i eventually got it back to stock but i could not switch to intel >< ~6500 3dmark06

My computer just crashed halfway though installing 10.7 beta

Switchable now working, have no idea what drivers are on.

well 450 envy compared to 550 envy

5-10-15 fps. depends on how stuff goes.

450 envy compared to super OCed 1336x768 3820TG.

yeah...that thing murders the envy (but also is on a smaller screen. sure you can hook it up to a monitor and all but still)

I, for one, plan to keep my Envy. Instead of driving a muscle car, I'm driving a luxury car. Less power, but enough to play SC2. Refined keyboard, touchpad, and aluminum chassis. <B

The numbers itself doesn't mean anything but when comparing stock e14 to stock acer, the 1000 point difference could mean 4-10 fps depending on game. When you are under 30 fps every fps counts.

    So yes it matters alot.

Hmm, I'm a bit underwhelmed at this machine's performance for Bad Company 2. Granted I'm using all the stock configs and drivers from HP, haven't done a clean install yet.

But level load times take forever. I thought the SSD would greatly improve load times over my Seagate 7200RPM in my Sager. With my Sager I'm frequently the first person to enter the battle, while others start to pop in shortly after. With my Envy 14 and Samsung SSD, I join well after the timer.

I'll reserve any further comment until I do a clean install, but it's not looking good.

    It's not 4820t but 4820tg
You are going to play sc2 on medium and the acer 4820tg on ultra.
Don't get me wrong envy14 is a nice laptop(eye candy) but lacking in performance.

I haven't decided between the two. I hope hp is going to fix this problem.

BC2 load time is limited by the GPU as some ati's card have insane long load times due to poor drivers probably.

Btw what fps are you getting on BC2 on low settings on 900p

My 5650 cant go above 575 clock. i get no artifacts and the temp is at 60ish when I pass 575. It just freezes and gives black screen... seems like it can do alot more if we can change the voltage.

Haven't checked fps yet, just based on what I'm used to on my Sager with GTX 260m and desktop GTX 260 core 216.

That sucks about ATI load times though. You can have a definite advantage if you can at least get in before the game starts with the counter.

Yeah, definitely seems like voltage is the key. There's gotta be a way to unlock it. It would be nice if HP even gave us an "unofficial" utility to bump it to 1.0V to at least get a little more oomph.

I'm running 3DMark06 right now with 550/820. It seems to "jerk" a little bit though, like skipped frames. Wonder what could be causing that?

I get a bit of skipped frames too sometimes on firefly forest (if I'm using drivers that arent the hp ones)

are you on the hp ones? if so..maybe it's just firefly forest being annoying

Fraps with BC2 and low with 900p gives me on average in the mid 20s. That is HORRIBLE no ifs and butts. How would I change the ame to DX9 or soemthing. Maybe that would increase performance.
