For the person who asked about l4d2...I can run it on max settings (maxed out AA and AF) with 30-50fps depending on the map.

yeah. I mean my fps seems to hover around 30-35 to somtimes 25 at high but hell. it seems much more playable than before for whatever reason.

*shrugs* works for me. Might drop to medium shaders if I need to if things get problematic in big armies and stuff.

What does catalyst AI do? I just tried disabling it and running sc2 but now my game keeps going to a black screen after a few minutes with the music still going.

EDIT: Enabled AI again and my game still crashes to a black screen...could my gpu just be a lemon?

EDITEDIT: Ack, it's happening in Batman AA too...

TripleEDIT: Happening in all my games :[

is it normal that even in counter-strike 1.6 I can't even get 100fps when I look into some smoke? My 4year old desktop can handle 100fps constant in that game.

    *shrugs*

smoke always screwed my computer over no matter what the graphics card.

it may just depend on the mode you're playing CS in (direct x may just not like the smoke or open gl could be pissed if you're on that)

in other news that powerplay bug is annoying but at least you can turn powerplay off, hit apply, turn it back on, hit apply and it'll be fixed til you unplug the laptop again

So I downloaded the Mafia 2 Demo and saw it had a benchmark in it. Here are the results.

    450/800

    1280x720

Low Settings - Avg FPS 34.8
High Settings - Avg FPS 34.3

    1600x900
Low Settings - Avg FPS 25.7
High Settings - Avg FPS 25.2

    OCed to 525/950

    1280x720
Low Settings - Avg FPS 39.6
High Settings - Avg FPS 38.9

    1600x900
Low Settings - Avg FPS 29.7
High Settings - Avg FPS 29.1

Game looks surprisingly good at low settings too

I would but anything over 525 and my graphics card isnt stable and crashes. I ran it at 525/800 though and here are the results

    1280x720
    Low - Avg FPS 37.5
    High - Avg FPS 37.0

    1600x900
    Low - Avg FPS 27.7
    High - Avg FPS 27.1

550/800 should be around there. Maybe like half a FPS/1 FPS more

for tf2, put this in your launch options:
"-windowed -noborder -width 1600 -height 900"
    without quotations of course.

I actually get a slight performance boost (strange, right?) and it's easier to alt-tab out.

I'll try that stuff out for source engine stuff.

might fix the issues I get.

it tries to lock up or thinks it's locking up as the game starts, then it's fine, then if you try to change settings or alt tab more than once it'll screw up and you have to close the game from the task manager/

Good to know my future laptop will be able to run this game fine, but seeing only a 1fps drop from low to high settings... isn't there something strange?

What are you people using to overclock? I'm either really stupid or MSI Afterburner doesn't work for some reason. Or both. Cause when I open it up and increase the Core Clock even a little bit and click apply, it just jumps back to what it was (450MHz). What am I doing wrong?

edit the msiafterburner.cfg file to change:

    EnableUnofficialOverclocking = 0
    to
    EnableUnofficialOverclocking = 1

You will have to save the file elsewhere then copy / paste it to the MSI Afterburner folder due to admin permissions.

Turn off reflections and you can run pretty much everything on medium. Also I heard turning off Catalyst AI helps improve performance too.

yeah but how did it perform?

watch your replay and go like 10-15mins into the game, look on top of a Protoss base and click "ctrl - alt - F" to get FPS counter up. :)

on medium settings ill be happy to know how it does.

"edit" 82 degrees is not critical.. buuuut its not pretty either!

So the Envy 14 doesn't have heat issues at all or??

During the MASSIVE battles (mothership cloaking 1000000 void rays etc) I would go anywhere from 10-20 FPS on medium shaders, medium shadows, medium post-processing, and everything else on high at native res. Still easily playable for me. Also at 84C the right palmrest was just warm and the left is cool all the time so it doesn't bother me at all its just I get worried about the internals. I am sure on all medium I would of had about 20-25.

EDIT: I was playing in my room at the time with a 75F ambient temp and my laptop is in like a cubby so it heats up a lot more up there)

Does overclocking damage the laptop in any way? I know I should keep an eye on the temps but is that the only thing that could damage the laptop? I don't want to kill it or anything.

I can't even max out Counter Strike Source. When I put everything on high and turn all the extras on, the FPS stays around 20. Is that normal? or is it just my Envy 14?

What about reflections. Turn of reflections and see how well it performs. It almost doubles my frames in certain instances. 84C isn't bad at all. Tmax is something like 105C before throttle isn't it?

Whenever I play SC2 (run fine on medium), there are these orange laser beam looking things that shoot out everywhere from the buildings, scenery and units. I'm guessing it's not part of the game, so how do I fix this?

Strange, decided to try one more thing before RMAing. Fresh install and didn't touch AI settings everything runs smoothly...seems as though when I disabled AI all my games began crashing even if I renabled it.

Anyone think they can help me out with why this could be happening? I'm ok with leaving AI on, just kinda bugs me that disabling it would cause this many issues

    Final Fantasy XIV Beta

Keep in mind, the beta has problems with ATI cards (People reported regular Desktop 5850/5870's dropping down to low 20 FPS sometimes.)

First thing's first, this game is freaking gorgeous. Even though I was playing at the lowest settings, it still amazes me how beautiful this game is. I played for about two hours and will continue later but here are my results so far.

This is with my card OCed to 525/925. The performance is decent. I played for an hour at 1280x720 and for an hour at 1600x900. I played at both resolutions with the lowest settings possible.

In 1280x720, the game averaged around 25 FPS and barely dipped below 20, even when surrounded by a bunch of people.

When I bumped up the resolution back to native, I was surprised. The game still averaged around 23-25 FPS. I saw it dip once or twice to under 20 to like 18 or so but that was only when I was surrounded at the camp with atleast 15 people near me. The game still looked smooth even at 25 FPS.

Im sure that once the beta kinks are fixed, such as the major one with ATI cards underperforming, the game will run at a solid 30 FPS. Over the 2 hours, the highest temps recorded for my CPU were 81/78 and the for GPU was 74.

Once I get back home, I will play the beta at the base 450/800 to see how it performs.

Edit: tried it at 450/800. Not too good. Averaging around 20 FPS at 1600x900. I'm actually getting 30 FPS out in the fields at 525/925 and sometimes even 40 FPS+ when there aren't many people there.

    Pics! :)

    i5 uses 1066MHz, mine is clocked at 1066MHz, i7 quads use 1333MHz.

The 8.xxx version has nothing to do with 10.6, 10.7 ,etc. That 10.7 is year (2010) . month ( July = 7). Find that here:

I'm not sure of the correlation between the 8.whatever and 10.6, 7 or whatever.

those drivers are the official HP drivers. So it'll only update from 8.713 (10.3b..ish or 10.3 custom for HP switchable graphics) whenever HP releases new drivers.

the memory in the envy is indeed 1333Mhz. But it'll only run at 1066 Mhz with an i5.

needs the i7 setup to use all the speed.

I'm using MSI afterburner to do some slight underclocking. However, when I apply my settings, In GPU-Z under sensors it says I am still running at 450/800, when I set the sliders to 425/700. However under the Graphics Card tab it says the core clock is 425/700. This occurs with overclocking as well.
