Does it mean that SB envy 14 is also affected by the issue those DV6s have where the dGPU doesn't support openGL? I read from the forums that Witcher 2 is one of the games affected, where it will run on intel graphics instead.

Good 'ole Envy 14 CTO1000 will run Dirt 3 at 1600x900 on the medium preset (with AA off) at 30ish fps. Which is fine.

Getting to that point was a bit of a pain (..yeah..hey GFWL).

Because there is no index, and this topic is 200pages+ long I will just ask instead of read everything.

What are (reachable) core and memory overclocks for the 5650M?
Is there a way to up the voltage yet?

How much FPS do you get on bc2 (include settings and resolution please)

core and memory OC depends heavily on your laptop.

I can get to 550/800 (up from 450/800)

My voltage maxes at 0.95 I can up it to 1.0 but I can't OC anymore so..I don't bother upping the voltage)

If I OC memory at all games insta-crash.

other people can go and be like 525/945 or stuff.

Anything above 510 would get me random crashes in 3D games (no memory OC)

The gain was so little that I reset back to stock clocks so I could preserve the life of my laptop.
I even cap my CPU at 85% to keep it cool and disable turboboost.

I just leave mine at 450/800 myself since well, 450 to 550 is 3 fps and usually that sort of gain doesn't help me.

For me it really depends on the game for example on crysis 2 i max out at about 485/800 but on shift 2 i got to 540/840.

ok what i want to know is how do you know your over clocking.. because in MSI afterburner my clock on the graph stays at 450.. max and the same for the real time results on GPUZ...

but in GPUZ under GPU clock its changed.. and so is memory clock.. am i even overclocking at all?? cause i can OC 580/910... which im starting to think i cant even go that high..

    thoughts?

sapphire TRiXX tends to work better than msi afterburner now (and can let you control voltage. Though don't mess with voltage)

    or at least, shows stuff.

I know for the older msi afterburner (1.61) you had to edit some stuff in the config file to get overclocking to work

    well.

you can check the sensors on gpu-z (set it to contiinue scanning while not focused) and play a game.

whatever it maxes out at is what you're at.

yeah. uh. you don't Immediately OC by like 50 or 100.

you do it in increments of 5 or 10 til things break, then you ratchet it down by 5 or so.

you also kinda wanna watch temperatures and "doing it by increments of 5 or 10" means bump it up by 5/10 or so and then stability test it for awhile.

then up it by more. etc.

otherwise you can run the risk of breaking the gpu if say it overheats too much or something

Just a quick question, wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue, but i've just updated my drivers from the stock ATI/Intel to ATI's 11.7 (via the topic on NBR made by ironman43) but now I seem to of lost a few frames when im playing TF2, as an example I used to be able to play the game with everything pretty much on high and still get about 30FPS, whereas last night I had everything set to low and it was still dipping down to 17FPS in places

It could be server lag, though I thought that would effect everybody that was playing (and everybody said they were fine), oh and my ping was only 16 or something, so no problems there at all

Just wondered if anyone else had experienced this? If I get the chance to play again tonight then i'll give it a go because it might of just been a one off problem, if not then i'll have to go back to the stock drivers!

Did you have the 300/300 powerplay glitch?

You have to disable and reenable powerplay to fix it.

it happens a lot/whenever you unplug the computer and plug it back in.

It may also remain after a reboot (sometimes).

It also may be caused by swapping gpus but I KNOW it is caused by unplugging the computer.

is upgrading the cpu possible? and if so, is it worth it and how hard would it to be to upgrade? i would only upgrade the cpu to get better gaming performance...and also, is it possible to upgrade the wifi card? would it be possible to upgrade to a killer wireless-n 1103? thanks

You can't upgrade the wifi card. Bios has a whitelist so only PCIe devices that HP provides with the laptop will work. CPU is upgradeable, though.

I wouldn't try to do i5 -> i7, but you can give it a try if you're buying from a vendor that allows open box CPU returns in case it doesn't work.

    no to the second.

that would involve replacing the entire motherboard.

also it wouldn't work with your old processor.

    so..yeah.

to the first the 450m and the 520m are pretty much identical minus the 520m gets a bit faster single thread turbo boost (2.93 ghz for one thread if the others are not in heavy use). They have the same dual thread turbo boost (2.66)

basically the difference is negligible. If you were upping from a 430m or so or a 370m it could make some difference

Honestly these damned laptop makers need to quit making that b*tch move of having integrated gpus and start making MXM cards the industry standard. I'm tired of having to buy new laptops every 2 years just to keep up.

Think of all the laptops that could be saved/not thrown into wastelands/all the energy and time used to "recycle" them.

Anyone know what is the average 3DMark06 score for this laptop? The highest score I got was 7800~.

I can overclock my GPU to 585/955 (from 450/800) without crashing or artifacts. But I currently overclocked it to a milder 525/925 to preserve the laptop.

Current highest temp recorded with 525/925 is 76c (playing GTA 4 for hours on my bed), average highest temp is 70~72c (also after many hours of non stop GTA 4). Idle it sits at around 48-50c, highest idle was 54c and lowest was 40c.

well make sure you aren't being hit by the power play bug (go to powerplay in the catalyst control center, untick it, hit apply, retick it, hit apply again)

that fixes it..and you may have to start doing that each time you unplug and plug the computer back in.

it's annoying but..what can ya do? I set up two hotkeys for powerplay on and off to make things easier (also have two for integrated gpu or dedicated gpu)

go into the catalyst control panel.

click on preferences in the top right

click on hotkeys, choose your gpu (amd one)

tick the "enable hotkeys feature if it isn't already ticked"

go to actions according to powerplay for the powerplay stuff. click edit, setup hotkey for powerplay on and powerplay off.

go to actions according to switchable graphics. Do the same thing for high performance and power saving gpu.

make sure you use a different letter for each one. It doesn't like having the same letter for the gpu stuff, etc

Also, Deus Ex HR works pretty well at 1600x900 on my envy 14.

no OC to the gpu, 11.8 catalyst divers.

DX11 on, SSAO off, Depth of Field and Shadows set to normal. AA off, AF at 16x. Vsync and triple buffering off.

I had to lower mouse sensitivity a lot initially, so watch out for that if you have some ty $30 mouse like I do

I just ordered the Envy 14 yesterday! The graphics card is the 1 GB DDR3 Radeon HD 6630 switchable Graphics [HDMI, Mini Display Port].

Is this graphics card decent for gaming? Do you guys use this card, or have you bought after-market cards?

My Configuration (in case any of it is relevant):
    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • 2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2630QM (2 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.9 GHz
    • 1GB DDR3 Radeon(TM) HD 6630 switchable Graphics [HDMI, Mini Display Port]
    • 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 System Memory (2 DIMM)
