The graphics card isn't the best, but it is pretty decent. You can't swap out cards because this isn't an MXM laptop.

Thanks dude! That's good to know. I'm already starting to plan which games I want. I've had an Xbox360 for the past few years and a pretty old laptop, so having a shiny new laptop opens up some nice new possibilities. (I'm thinking Shogun 2: Total War. The Xbox is good at shooter, but is very lacking in strategy games  ).

    Anyone have any suggestions?

shooters good on consoles ? I think playing FPS with a gamepad is plain crippling (i tried it).
I've been playing shooters with a mouse since 97 (after 3 years as a keyboarder), and nothing beats the mouse / keyboard combo to aim and move swiftly.

Besides that shogun 2 should do well in the envy14.

Yeah, the reason why Microsoft didn't originally implement cross-platform pc/xbox gaming is because mediocre PC gamers consistently outperformed even the best console players.

Uh-oh. If that's true, I have a lot of catching up to do. Hopefully due to the higher cost of owning a gaming-friendly PC, there will be less whiny immature children to deal with when playing multi-player on a PC. Xbox Live is certainly full of trash-talking 8 year old brats with headsets. I just have to laugh when an 8 year old threatens to me and calls me a faggot on xbox live. Cheers.

    yes.

if you turn off shadows. (which sucks...there may be some ini tweaking or something that will let you keep shadows on..I dunno. Apparently Borderlands did a bad job at optimizing them).

my personal experience has been "fps is fine if shadows are off. FPS is 30 at max, sub 20s to high teens with them on"

Does anyones else's Envy freeze or just a blank black screen after like an hour or 2 of playing or is that just me? Also it gets really hot and the only way to resolve this is to hold the power button for a hard reboot

That doesn't look normal at all...

A slow computer will cause low FPS but not graphical glitches like that.

Bad GPU? Bad drivers? Bad game?

I had similar issue with need for speed shift 2, where it would crash the whole computer after the first race and give a screen like the one you have. the only way to get out was to force shut down. I uninstalled and after a while I installed again from the same source and game works fine. so probably you have a bad install.

    possibly a bad install.

possibly some part of the pixel shaders on the drivers are breaking.

possibly dead island requires the 11.8 drivers or else it breaks badly. Not sure. The game is still really buggy

    huh.

I get like 30 to 50 fps at 1600x900 and also don't have quad core (which may make some sort of difference since zombie AI is on one of the cores, other stuff is on the other, etc)

people know zombie AI is on one of the cores because if you set affinity to 1 for that game, the zombies have no AI. At all.

I put everything to the minimum and get 30-80 FPS on my envy 14 (see below for specs)

On my desktop tho, I run constant 100+ FPS with 1920x1080 and max everything (i7 + 6970)

Try updating your drivers. Your glitch isn't normal and it may signal that your GPU is already fried (if it's not the drivers).

Clean out your fans. With compressed air, and do it well. I went to town on cleaning the dust out of my year old Envy after it did that, and now it runs very cold, no more black screens and no more burning my fingers on the vents lol.

    I get about 20-50 FPS in BFBC2.

    Driver version: 8.881.0.0
    Settings: 12xx x 720
Everything is set on low settings.
    I cleaned out my fans.

After 30 minutes to 1 hour of playing I get My highest temp readings:
    GPU: 68C
    CPU 80C

Seems like my CPU is running way hotter, I should have gone with the i5 520 :(

Going to apply Artic Silver 5 on the CPU later today, will report back with results.

By the way, anyone know exactly how much I need to remove? Just the heat sink bar thing right?

It may not help as much as you'd expect, other people have reported maybe a 2C decrease. IDK if you'll do any better, though.

    Hi, I have envy 14
    i5 2410M, 4gb memory, 750gb 7200rpm hard disk, and AMD Radeon HD 6630M.

I am a 1st person shooter lover and i play cod4 alot. the thing is, i have newly bought this laptop and i am not even able to make the graphic card deliver me 125 FPS in multiplayer online game. I have tried minimising the graphics and resolution of the game to the lowest level, i have tried switching AMD graphics to full performance by catalyst control centre but still, the game runs on 50-60 fps max.
What should i do? can somebody help me out overhere?

Why do you need to have 125 FPS? Fifty to sixty FPS is more than playable for any game.

The screen is locked at 60 Hz if I'm not mistaken, which means that anything over 60 FPS won't make a difference. People brag about super-high frame rates because they're proud of their computer's performance capabilities, but in reality the difference between 60 FPS and 600 FPS on most systems is how much energy the GPU is consuming and how much heat it's putting off, nothing else.

Really, a lot of people don't even notice the difference between 30 FPS and 60 FPS. If your games seem unplayable at such high framerates, you've got a network issue causing lag in your game, not a computer performance issue. Either that or your framerate is being displayed incorrectly.
