Sigh so crap. I even tested the random drops in fps on BFBC2 and same thing happens as it does in BF3. It will run at normal FPS and randomly drop in 10 second intervals - pretty much made my games unplayable. Definitely 11.11 problem. Hoping 11.11b will fix this, otherwise going straight back to 11.10.

Edit: Now I'm getting worried. I uninstalled my drivers in safe mode, and reinstalled stock drivers. I am still getting the same problem. I'm hoping it's not a hardware issue. I'm wondering if OC'ing is at fault as I have tried to OC it in the past. Any ideas?? :( Also, my Envy sometimes has crackly sound when playing music and when windows loads up.

Hmmm, my E14 running 11.11b runs totally fun with BF3 on AUTO settings at 800*600 around 40 FPS, it might be your envy bro (I have a first gen)...

Well pre 11.10preview1 it had those issues so you are going to want to get those drivers installed.

Now that you mention the bc2 drops, i remember having that issue but the issue resolved by cleaning my fans. And dont overclock the max you will get from overclock is like 3 fps or 5 max, wich are not worth it.

Having a hard time trying to get BF3 to run.. Keeps crashing about 2 minutes in. The sound loops and i get 2 different color vertical lines on my screen. Can't quite figure out what the problem is... Anyone know what might cause this?

After Googling and using this page: How to troubleshoot ?Display driver stopped responding and has recovered?, ATIKMDAG.sys type errors

... I decided to reload my system from scratch (I never actually did a clean install after I got my machine). Problem is still happening, even trying to use 11.11c.

Now I'm going to send in my laptop for repair AGAIN. http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/608462-my-hp-adventure-continues.html.

They better wow me with this one.

I had the same issue, turned out CPU was overheating. Turn off Intel Turbo Boost in BIOS (auto overclocking). Helped me.

Ok, is going on here? I was getting a playable 28-33 fps in BF3 at 1280x720 with low/med settings using the 11.11a drivers. Updated to the 11.12 drivers (and had like 14 windows updates installed) and suddenly I'm getting these random FPS dips where it'll drop to 6-7fps then rebound to normal in the same scene! I uninstalled the ATI drivers, ran driversweeper, reinstalled 11.11a and problem persisted. I've dropped settings to lowest with 800x460 and now it just goes from 50-60 FPS dropping down to 6-7. What the hell is happening here? Game is totally unplayable now...

Also of note, the audio dies during the framerate bombs...

Also of note, the sound cuts out too during the framerate drops... Seems to be worse in the new Back to Karkand maps, but happens in original maps too.

Updated to 12.1a preview drivers. Still no fix. Reinstalled audio drivers. No fix. Reinstalled Turbo Boost drivers. No fix. RAWR!!!

Final update: Used system restore back to the "glory days" and nope. Same issues.

i'll have to try the fan issue sometime after christmas then. until then, i'll hope it's a BF3 issues, cause there seem to be threads all over the place with AMD/Nvidia users complaining about similar issues. Some have even reported having dual 69xx series GPUs that get these drops even with the lowest settings...

Yea ive heard that too. Back 2 Karkand is really taxing though because all the buildings are enter able/destructible but on 600p and at all lowest settings I get about 35 FPS and suddenly my FPS drop is gone...not sure what happened I updated to the 12.1a preview drivers though!

Ditto. I've pushed the graphics down to the absolute minimums with no benefit. It just makes the FPS higher before they crash.

I think they may be for crossfire because I tried installing CAP 3 and it nearly bricked my computer. Froze up once it got to Win7 login screen. Had to boot into safe mode and system restore, couldn't even uninstall it.

It seems just giving a forceful blow into each of the fan ports and reinstalling 12.1a has it working fine again. Though, I will say I die inside a little bit when i see how pretty 1600x900 is even on lowest and then have to drop to 1024x600 to get a decent framerate... Getting mid/upper 30's with high texture, medium on a few other settings and med differed anti-aliasing.

Haha yea I know what you mean, BF3 is all about resolution because even on lowest settings the game looks aboslultely beautiful, too bad we can't use 900p (I only get about ~21 FPS with 900p lowest settings :( )

So one setting i tweaked that seemed to make a big difference: Mip Map quality. It was set to best quality, i dropped it to best performance and it shot the framerate up. Not sure if this was set to this before a driver update and the new drivers modified it for some reason but seems to have made things better. Getting 27-31 fps in BF3 at 1280x720 with low/med settings, high textures, low AA, and 4x AI.

    Hi all,

First of all, sorry if this is already covered somewhere but the search function wasn't returning any results from this forum.

Was thinking about getting the Envy14 beats, mainly because of its size (need a laptop for travel), but am looking to be able to do some gaming on the road.

Just wanted to know if the Envy14 plays Skyrim and Total War: Shogun 2 smoothly at Med settings. Otherwise, I'd probably have to get a bigger laptop which I'm avoiding.

    Thanks all.

Hello everybody. Can somebody help me here?

I have an Envy 14, with Ati Radeon 5650 - And for some reason, it suddenly started to struggle in my games. I can play Battlefield Bad Company 2, with no lag at all - but then suddenly after a few seconds the fps drops and it's gets laggy, then it gets normal again. I can't even play CS:S without some sort of lag, and i suppose I would be able to run some of these games with everything on low..

It's freaking me out, since I finally got myself together and bought some games, then it fails at it.

I hope you can help. Also it seems to get quite warm and the fans are quite noisy under games. ALSO: Whenever i try to install new drivers, it says: installing new display driver and then suddenly it goes black, with this white thing in the corner flashing, and then it keeps flashing until it restarts.

I really hope you can help me

Best regards (And a HAPPY new year!)
    Christoffer

    **EDIT**

Also, it does give me a black screen and shutdown while ingame in BFBC2

    Hey man :D

I cleaned out them, using a vacuum and slighty removing some of the dust on the fans. It doesn't crash, at least when i tried after. They still run quite fast,
even though I get a little fps drops still, with EVERYTHING on low. Should I try to remove the fan-case (inside the Envy) and clean it further? Or should i install some sort of gamebooster, or OC the ati radeon 5650? I don't know much about OC'ing - but i think i found a guide somewhere on here. I suppose it's MSI Afterburner i have to use :) But.. would it make it able to play less laggy? I find it kinda frustrating that with EVERYTHING on low, it still sometimes get fps drops. But i suppose it's the big maps, that kinda makes it struggle. But do you have any tips/idea to make it run better, with those kinda games? I'd really love to look into OC'ing and only, figure out what ways i can clean it up. I also suppose, it the GPU gets alot of heat, it must make it struggle with the higher frame rates? So, should I try to figure out ways to cool down my PC?

Thanks alot for the quick answer

    Happy new year
    Christoffer

it's not graphics power as is evidenced by the lack of settings effects. I've had the same issue. I cleaned off the fans and driver sweepered my AMD drivers and installed the newest 12.1a drivers from AMD.

Honestly, if I were doing this over right now, I would get another laptop to do gaming on. I've been pretty disappointed with the performance on BF3. According to notebookcheck.com, the 6630m in the new Envy 14 will post 29 fps in Skyrim, not really ideal, IMO but playable. I would look into the Alienware 14" that packs the GT555m, which NBC indicates puts out 22% better framerate (around 35fps).

Hey Christoffer, I had weird graphical issues with green vertical lines and massive slowdowns when I got my envy! I kept it for 6 months and called hp every month explaining my situation and they kept telling me it was normal. Then I finally told them I wanted to send it in and I'm sure theres something wrong. I gave him a detailed description of games to play and show how the games crashed, and they replaced the motherboard and my games work amazing. Also make sure your shaders aren't too high, more like medium or low.

Sorry, I haven't been on the forums in a while. If you have green and grey or green and black vertical lines I had the same problem. You need to call hp and tell them your problem and write directions step by step how to get it to happen and they will replace your motherboard. It happened to me and when I got it back my computer runs amazingly!

Hey guys. So i finally got to update my drivers, and they are now: 8.920.0.0

But still.. I don't seem to get very stable gameplay in these games:

    LA Noire
    Battlefield Bad Company 2
    GTA IV

All of them are struggling, even at the LOWEST possible. I even tweaked BFBC 2 to even lower than low.. Lol..

I don't know much about hardware, but shouldn't my HP Envy 14 1193eo be able to play any of the games, with a decent FPS even at the lowest? It's not a real real bad lag in BFBC2, but I've seen people run it better, even with fraps on.

Does somebody have ideas.. I'm getting so annoyed of googling and testing all the time. It seems to have no end. I doubt it's hardware based problem, since i fixed the black-screen problem. But it still does get a little warm on the left corner of the pc (from keyboard) while playing.

depends on the game. Though LA Noire and GTAIV are both poorly optimized and prefer quad core cpus.

battlefield BC2 may or may require some tweaking here and there to make run well (not really sure what sort of tweaking).

edit: also those people running it with a 5650 on youtube are using a overclocked 5650 mobility (and our 5650 mobility doesn't even reach their stock clocks of 550/800)

we're stuck at 450/800...and well that's only like 2-3 fps max but since they can then sometimes OC to like 600/900 to 1100 (ram OCing really helps) it makes a big difference.

well BC2 should run with tweaks on like mediumish settings if nothing else at 35-40 fps (or 30-40..I dunno..it'll be playable)

    la noire and gtaIV well...*shrugs*

Hey I need someone to check something for me (preferably someone who has never re-installed Windows 7 on their machine).
I did a fresh install on my Envy 14 and now I'm having HDMI problems(no signal) and I can't play FIFA12(on the TV).
    Is this correct?
Something tells me it wasn't 'Generic PnP Monitor' before I re-installed it. Could you please check for me and tell me what it is?

hmmm....you installed the 5650 drivers from HP correct?

also you're trying to connect to the tv while using the radeon 5650 (gonna assume both of these are correct)

you could try reinstalling the HP drivers/updating them to the latest version while also doing a custom install and making sure you install the hdmi drivers (well hdmi audio drivers but still)

Yes. The original ones I had from my C:\swsetup folder when I first bought my machine.

    Yup.

What do you mean by 'a custom install'?
There are no separate HDMI drivers(they're bundled with the respective Video/Audio drivers).
Anyway, I updated to catalyst 11.12 (driver 8.92-111109a-129968C-ATI) and still no luck. Also updated the audio drivers and now I'm out of options.
Before the fresh install HDMI worked perfectly, now from my TV(Toshiba) I get no response at all. From my friends TV(a Sony) I get an 'unsupported signal' message, very frustrating!!!!

orcs must die works fine on my computer unless some update since..uh...early december broke it.

Also by custom install I may mean manual install. It's one of the options (that or automatic) when you install the catalyst drivers.

if the hdmi is just not working after you've installed the drivers not really sure what's up.

go to the device manager and go to sound, video, and game controllers to see if the AMD High Definition Audio Device is in there. That (or it may say ATI, one or the other) is your HDMI audio driver. If that's not there something didn't install right back when you installed the hp drivers.

Also just to cover all the bases you are swapping to extended/duplicate/projector only mode for your display settings when you plug in the hdmi cable, right? (fn + f4..or just f4 if you have quick keys turned on)

hey everyone, i think i might have found a solution for bf3....
i was playing around trying to get more fps and i did a couple of things that seemed to not increase the fps (maybe by like <5 fps) but the general smoothness and feel of the game (atleast in singleplayer)

    1.update your bios
    2.update your graphics driver
3.get rid of all the programs you dont need
4.remove file "KB971033" in the windows update section (mine was at the bottom)
5.type into CMD "BCDEDIT /set increaseuserva 3072" (this should minimize memory leaks)
6.type into CMD "sfc /scannow" (this should scan your system for any possible errors)
7.download the file http://media.askvg.com/downloads/2009/01/windows-7-registry-tweaks.zip and run it
8.download the file MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service and open the README file and do as it says

after this the game according to FRAPS was running slightly faster but in my opinion it was really smooth and the framerate seemed to be less jumpy...i dont know how well this will work in multiplayer since i only have a cracked version of the game but in singleplayer it was amazing for me...i played at 1366x768 with mid-high settings with no AA and i started enjoying the game alot more

    Hope this helps!!

I have to disable my Intel HD display driver for it to work otherwise I get a 'could not initialize engine' error. You don't have to do this? I got this fix in the Steam forums and it seemed to affect everyone with switchable ATI graphics.

Did a custom install, checked all the components and re-installed them (I even had connected the HDMI cable to the TV as I did this) still no luck.

Yeah. I've pretty much given up now.

    It's all good there.

I had it for a year before I re-installed windows and I would play games on the TV almost every day. I give up! thanks for the help.

    that is so weird.

my only other suggestion is "screw it, reinstall windows and hope it works this time"

I mean..maybe the hdmi cable is bad if you're using the same cable all the time.

Or maybe the port died somehow...which sucks

Hey Magus.. I noticed you'd posted a while back about playing Dead Space.. you still think it's enjoyable enough to play on the Envy 14? Steam is running a sale for both Dead Space games for $5/each or $9.99 for both. Thinking about picking them up..
