@ironman, yeah I tried ocing my gpu but it didnt help that much if at all. Would you figure ocing the cpu would help? I think im gonna get an ssd so I will clean install and hopefully that will help a little.

The user's system has an i5-2410m and GeForce 540m. It should give us a rough idea.

well apparently there are random fps drops to below 30 so...

crap. Bethesda, fix the game/ati get better graphics. I shouldn't go from 40 to 20 fps when someone opens a gate.

it also may be a cpu issue more than gpu since apparently shadows are done in cpu.

I'm getting pretty good framerate on default medium settings. I've been however getting a lot of crashes and weird graphic anomalies (missing bodies, maps glitching out...).

Hi, new to this site and a new ENVY 14 beats edition. My specs are: i7 2.3 8mb, radeon 6630, 12 gb ram, 750gb hard drive.
But to my question: I've been reading here to see if I need to update anything to be able to play BF3 on my laptop and I don't really get it. Some are talking about uninstalling the graphics and downloading new drives from the ATI website, is this something I have to do to be able to play games on my computer? I'm not alot into the hardware and stuff like that, so all help is appreciated.

Oh don't worry, you don't have anything crazy to do, no uninstalling or anything. Just go to this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/582545-drivers-ati-5650-6630-hp-envy-14-a.html and download the 11.10 drivers (the link on the right of the first post). That should be all you have to do for BF3.

    Welcome to the forums!

I updated to 11.11 and have noticed BF3 tends to crash and freeze during gameplay. It was stable in 11.10 v3. Anyone else experiencing this?

I'm having trouble playing BF3. I can run it and play for about 5 minutes then it crashes my computer and sound loops & then my computer restarts... i know it's not because of overheating either. I've also tried 11.9 and 11.10 drivers.

Hey guys just wante to report I'm playing Skyrim with these settings

    Screen Resolution: 1366x768
    Antialiasing: OFF
    Antisotropic: OFF
Texture Quality: Medium (High is playable but I had some fps drops an I just like to play a game fluently so medium is fine for me).
    Radial Blur Quality: Low
    Shadow Detail: Low
Decal Quantity: None (If someone could explain to me what is this for xD)

    NOT FXAA

    Water: All reflections.

With these settings Im getting a Solid 45 - 40 fps. No problems so far.

no. I mean at the start of the game during the intro sequence. The gate opens when you reach helgen on the cart.

I don't think FPS is not supposed to drop to 25 when that happens....though if you're saying that high textures are giving you issues (and I always had high textures picked even when I hit everything else to medium/low) that could be my problem.

I'll check it out later (need to reinstall the game...and some other things, reformatted the laptop a week ago)

I started to notice some fps drops today, at random times, even inside the golden claw cave, its a CAVE, there shouldnt be a fps dropdown there, but anyways, lets hope for the next patch.

yeah. even people on super high end computers are having times where randomly cpu usage spikes and gpu usage drops to like 20%.

on spots that this shouldn't happen (like just staring in a direction in a town) so there's probably something messed up with the engine

eh I'm just repeating what was being seen on the support threads on bethesda's forum. people are using gpu-z and a couple other things and noting that at certain spots in the game gpu utilization drops to like 20%

How hot does your Envy get during Skyrim? I just got mine a few weeks ago and it plays it flawlessly (with occassional FPS drop) on high settings. It does get quite hot though, near the right side. Is this normal?

well the fan is blowing air out over there and the laptop is metal so yeah...normal.

leave hwmonitor running in the background to get an idea as to how hot the cpu and gpu are getting. So long as it is below lower 90s/upper 80s (88/89) things should be alright. Once you get to 89-92/93 you're very close to it getting too hot and throttling or just powering off (100 celsius..roughly)

Check my sig for the Envy I have, but I have been running Skyrim on the Ultra graphic settings and my temps don't get higher than 78 degrees (C), I use Coolsense and have it set on Performance mode. I also use Core Temp to monitor my temps, I also use their desktop gadget. I also monitor my throttling with Intels Turbo Boost Monitor and it stays around 2.6-2.9 during game play. Runs flawless who no hiccups! I will be buying the Envy 14-2160se in a couple of months, how are the graphics in Skyrim with that model?

I know it has been a couple of months, but I was curious if you ever fixed the problem you were having with Dead Island. If so, would you mind sharing how? I have a beats edition with 5650 and the same thing happens to me after playing less than a minute. Thanks!!

Oops, yeah sorry about that.. Unfortunately they don't have a gaming thread for my Envy, so when I found your gaming thread, I just had to join, hope you all don't mind.. Another reason I enjoy this thread is because I plan on buying the Envy 14-2160se in the next 2 months. I figure the price will come down after the 3rd gens get released...

Thanks guys for having a GAMING Thread!

GTAIV is kinda badly optimized and also benefits heavily from a quad core.

but even then sometimes it'll just run badly on really good computers 'cause...well, rockstar did a bad job porting it.

Could anyone help? in BF3 I over clock my gpu exactly the same way as in every other game and everything runs perfectly smooth but at the same time on numerous levels my gpu just fails on me. i dont understand this...i get artifacting in the EXACT same spot i had before and the level was perfectly fine before that. Its also usually right after a check point, any tips or anything? I would really appreciate it since this is really confusing me :(

    Which driver are you running?

Get 11.10 if you dont have it. If you do have it, try uninstalling and reinstalling 11.10 after reinstalling the stock HP drivers.

Finally got BF3 yesterday. Same thing happened to me. What it was doing was actually dropping back to Windows but BF3 was still running. Couldn't switch back to it, could only kill it via Task Manager. Spent time on the phone with the absolutely worthless EA support folks (each one repeatedly told me that a laptop isn't powerful enough to run this game; I know I've only got a 6630M, but trust me, my Envy 14 is more than enough to get at least 30 FPS on Medium graphics settings).

Went into Event Viewer and kept seeing the same error at every BF3 crash:
"Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

After that I decided to try out the 11.11a and b preview drivers, and both gave awful framerates. Rolled back to 11.10v3 like you said and voila, it seems to be working now, and I'm still getting at least 30 FPS (I'm guessing since I don't know how to see actual FPS).

well. I've had battlefield crash at times. Though sometimes the crash is caused by the server dying. (actually a lot of my crashes have happened since the server I was on up and died for 30 seconds)

when I was playing it a lot (pre the current patch...pre skyrim, skyward sword, arkham city, etc coming out)

I was set at 1280x720 with everything on medium..but shadows on low, AA off, AF off, AA Post processing off, and Motion Blur off.

roughly got 30 fps. 800x600 gets better than that (1024x600 gets better than 30..but I just preferred 1280x720)
