But usually GPU's have an "idle" state for basically desktop work where it's already significantly underclocked and draws very little power. This would only apply in a high GPU load scenario.

Yes it was auto detect and I'm sure the FPS will improve once the settings have been lowered.

This is strange... I was trying to play dota and it seems that I can't click a hotkey then use the mouse immediately after, i have to wait for about 1 second before my mouse click registers... anyone else have this problem?

Although I'm sure it's been brought up already, but I get above 60 FPS constantly in Team Fortress 2, all maxed. It goes 80+ when you're not in firefights or anything.

Oh, maxes out TeS: Oblivion too. :p

Does anyone have a basic rundown of the ENVY's problems during gaming (hardware or software) experiences? Please do share, and @2.0, if anything's interesting/relevant please add to the OP.

    Thanks doodettes and doodes.

I tried running TF2 on my Envy, but with everything maxed I still get 30FPS or so during large fights in open field (High Tower, 24 Man?) Does anyone else experience this? Running an I7-720 and 5650 @ 500/800.

But while running around normally its 60-80 FPS. Are you guys putting everything on Max including Vsync and AA?

Is the general consensus that most games can be run at High/Highest settings? I don't intend to play too many FPS games.

On a related note, anyone know how well PC version of Gears of War runs?

Hey so how does the 5830 in the Envy 15 compare to the 5650 in the Envy 14? I like the Envy 14 overall considering the built in CD-Rom drive, and VGA port, but I'm worried the 5650 will be low powered compared to the 5830 for gaming. I would mostly be running starcraft 2 though.

5830 is slightly? better. 5650 runs cooler, they say. If you want the power of a 58xx series, get a GX or G73. 5650 should be fine for SC2. That's what we're all gonna be playing come Tuesday.

SC2 will be no problem. HD 5650 at stock (450/800) runs 3DMark06 about 6800, iirc. HD 5830 about 10000. But with a little OC like 550 GPU (which is "normal") and 850-860 probably in the low 8000's.

A few quick framerate tests using the RE5 fixed benchmark:

    450/800 - 32.1
    510/800 - 34.6
    550/800 - 36.0
    585/800 - 37.1

    450/800 - 32.1
    450/810 - 32.4
    450/850 - 33.0
    450/900 - 33.5
450/950 - aborted due to minor/moderate artifacts appearing right away.

    585/830 - 37.6

When someone finds out how to go higher with the core clocks i think we will see these numbers almost double. I'm sure standard deviance for the upper limit will be between 670 and 730. That would yield around a 33% increase in frames ( my best guess).

Would voltage help with the ram stability? (dumb question, of course it will)

*edit* none of these were stability tests. The tests probably went for 75 seconds each, and I never went above 67c.

I have been doing some FurMark tests with overclocks from MSI Afterburner. I have only done "stability tests" of at least 40 minutes each so bear with me. So far those that passed are:

    554/800
    585/800
    585/855
    585/900
    585/935

    ...and the ones that failed:

    585/950
    585/1000

BTW temps didn't go above 70C when using a notebook cooler.

I am not exactly sure if this is process is reliable or what it means, if anything, but I thought I would like to share with you guys what I have done so far. Any insight or changes I should make would be gladly appreciated.

My Envy 14 has an estimated ship date of the 30th. Is that pretty accurate? Eight days of build time seems a bit excessive...

And how excessive is the bloatware? I would like to do a clean install but haven't used a windows machine in 5+ years and never had a single problem with the Powerbook I am finally replacing.

Anyway, here's to hoping I don't get a faulty machine... sounds like there have been a lot of problems and I'm starting to wonder if I will deeply regret not sticking with Apple.

Just a quick one for htwingnut as I know he is interested in gaming on battery.

I just gamed for 1hr on COD WOW and had 20% battery left. I had to adjust my power settings as follows:
ATI max power (keeps it at 450/800)
CPU max power on battery 60% (this locks the cpu at a max on 1.4ghz on battery)
Screen 100% brightness, no wifi or bluetooth
    Standard battery, no slice.

Cod was at 1600x900 all extra and options enabled with no AA/AF. FPS' were consitantly over 40.

Very pleased, with the slice I will be able to get over 2 hrs gaming like my m11x

Next I am going to try adjusting my max cpu to see how much affect it has on battery, but even at 1.4ghz all my games are playable, even BFBC2

Thank you! +1. If I can get over an hour, that's really all I'm looking for. You said though wifi off. I guess I can always reduce screen brightness too to offset wifi.

edit: have given out too much rep in last 24 hours (I guess too much of a good thing is a bad thing), so will get you sometime in the next day.

hehe dont worry mate, its not done for rep. I just remember you talking about gaming on battery.

The only reason I didnt test it on wifi is we have no wifi receivers at work. I can test it on wifi later but I am sure you will still get an hour with wifi on. And yeah, reducing brightness will probably help, but our offices are so bright!

In case it's helpful for comparison, I also tried the same RE5 benchmark last week with the 5830 set to 525/1100 with the AMD GPU Clock Tool (1920x1080p, AA 4x, Motion Blur on, Vertical Sync on, Shadow/Texture/Overall set to High), with the following results.

    DirectX 9 - Variable: 61.2 FPS
    DirectX 9 - Fixed: 56.8 FPS
    DirectX 10 - Variable: 49.7 FPS
    DirectX 10 - Fixed: 45.6 FPS

The only real difference I noticed between DX9 and DX10 seemed to be in the skin texture, the blood splattering and the appearance of glass surfaces. Um... is it just me or did it seem a little bit racist that all the zombies were black?

    New CSR (canned) response:

After reviewing your email, I understand that you are facing an issue with your HP ENVY 14t-1000 CTO Notebook PC wherein you want to increase the clock speed.

I would request you to perform few updates in your notebook and check the speed of clock if it gets affected or not.

    Troubleshooting steps:

    · BIOS update

    · Graphics driver update

    Solution in details:

    BIOS Update

Please visit the below link and install the BIOS update in the notebook.

Winflash for HP Notebook System BIOS - Microsoft Windows-Based HP ENVY 14t-1000 CTO Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

NOTE: clicking the link may give an error indicating it is invalid. If this occurs, copy the portion of the address on the remaining line and paste it at the end of the address showing in your browser until the complete address is displayed in the address bar.

Steps to update the Graphics driver

Please visit the below link and install the update in the notebook.

AMD and Intel Graphics Drivers for Microsoft Windows 7 HP ENVY 14t-1000 CTO Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

NOTE: clicking the link may give an error indicating it is invalid. If this occurs, copy the portion of the address on the remaining line and paste it at the end of the address showing in your browser until the complete address is displayed in the address bar.

Once you have performed the update in the notebook I would request you to check if the speed of the clock gets changed or not.

Bios listed was 06/18... I would hope that HP already updated the bios on the notebook prior to shipping.

I'm pretty sure that that "06/18" BIOS is the same as the one that comes with the notebook. After using that "update" it will still say BIOS version F.02 4/22/10 (at least it did for me, if it actually does update please tell me!).

On another note, my 3dmark06 scores go from ~7700 to ~6100 going from notebook to external display :( (@500/800)

Did anyone find out what the voltage on the 5650 was? I have a dv6tse (E14 coming) and amd gpu tool shows it as 0.9V, with options for 0.95V and 1.0V. It overclocks to about 740/940 with no problems. What's the highest OC that the Envy 14 gets?

I wish I could, but I'm still waiting on mine to be built :D. I'm trying to be a little proactive. You have to go through waves of the outsourced team before they escalate you to the techs State-side (or where ever HP has their western CS team). I'm masquerading as a owner using everyone's findings/results. I have a feeling once I get to the real tech team I'll have my Envy.

I believe its the processor. I was using the i3-370M (2.4Ghz) while you're on the i7-720 (1.6 Ghz). TF2, being as old as it is, has yet to be optimized for multiple cores. So basically it's largely run on the speed of one core. Valve is trying to make this better, but you know how slow they can be.

I'm using 1.61. I think the only important part is changing that setting in the config file

What's the max 3dmark06 score you were able to get with a OC'ed 5650 on the dv6tse?

They built and shipped mine out two days early, and I received it one day early. So in sense I got my envy about 3 days prior to estimated delivery.

And (forgive all my annoying questions!), can I save an overclocking profile that I can use later, or do I have to manually downclock to the factory settings? And (last one, I think :) ), do factory setting come back on after restart? I suppose I don't care too much about the last one, I just don't want to have to set everything manually every time I turn on the computer.
