I want to get a lap top to play SC2 and FF14 which would you recommend the envy 14 or 15 or the 17? Mobility is really a problem.

there's 4 or 5 profiles you can save for later and set to a hotkey combo (ctrl + shift+ q or something).

it has to be at stock for the card to clock down while idle.

I think factory settings come back on after a restart, but you can make msi afterburner load on boot. I don't think it OCs on boot though.

I don't know how accurate of a prediction the FF14 benchmark tool is, but assuming it is accurate, if you want to run it in high details at 1920x1080p, it looks like you will need a very expensive laptop.

The E 15 seems to run about anything at 1080p, max detail settings and get at least 30-45FPS, sometimes double that. With the FF14 benchmark tool, however, the result was a score of 1512 for 1080p (which is just barely "Capable of running the game, but will experience considerable slowdown. Adjusting settings is unlikely to improve performance.")

    At 720p I got 2871.

In both cases the 5830 was OC'd to 535/1100. if I increase any higher than that, it crashes.

I think something is wrong with our video cards in the envy 14.
    Dv6tse with the same 5650 gets a higher score of 9000 in 3dmark 06.
    Envy 14 GPU underclocked?

What could i do to get the full resolution of 2048 x 1152? It has VGA, DVI-D and HDMI but the Envy only has minidisplay and HDMI. HDMI only supports 1920 x 1280 or whatever. HELP PLEASE??

I ran 3dmark with the 5650 clocked to 525/848 and got 7570, so at least it's just the clock speed that's holding it back and nothing else.

I'm surprised that HP chose to undervolt it considering the dv6tse already runs it on a fairly low voltage (0.9 vs the usual 1.0 in most other laptops with the 5650). Unless they really gave the Envy inferior chips... but that doesn't make sense either, since it's supposed to be the premium line - why would they give the better chips to the consumer line?

edit: what was your cpu score? 2833 for the 450m

Question for those who are thinking about playing FFXIV: Why would they make an MMORPG with such high requirements? Isn't part of an MMO's success based on people being able to play it?

For those overclocking, you are leaving the memory clock at 800, correct?

I would think most of these should be able to hit 550MHz on the core, and if they don't, HP either did undervolting, or ATI binned the chips for a lower speed as they could not run at 550MHz to begin with.

Edit: Will definitely do some overclocking tests when I get my Envy 14. Currently still "in production."

Are you playing over a wireless connection? If so, try playing over a wired connection if you can, that way we can determine if the problem is your Envy 14's wireless.

    I tried 525/800 crashed in 3dmark 06
    525/848 3dmark 06 7486 no crash(dv6tse with 5650 oc 3dmark 06 9020)
    Anything over 525 crashed
Some members can't even oc over 500
Envy 14(GPU clocked 450/800) supposed to be a premium laptop with premium components. Dv6tse(GPU clocked 550/800) is not a premium laptop (oc 3dmark 06 9020)
It looks like the dv6tse has a better 5650 card than the premium envy 14.

Well, as I and other users have said, we have two possibilities here:

    A) HP undervolted the 5650, which seems to be what many think, but we have yet to confirm
    B) ATI binned these chips at a lower speed as they couldn't run at 550MHz. It's common practice among companies that make CPUs and GPUs, as they can save a lot of money by selling the same chips at a lower speed instead of just throwing them out.

I think our biggest priority should be figuring out the 5650's voltage. Then we can determine if option A or option B is true.

Everyone note that 3DMark06 default resolution is 1280x1024, so to get a true comparison with other machines, you'll have to hook up to an external monitor with at that resolution at a minimum, so a 1080p monitor would work fine.

Otherwise that result will be higher than it should be compared with other machines.

Probably not too easy without a schematic. If I had a schematic, I have a scope at work and could check this out. I don't even play many games, but I don't like it when companies market something as premium when it isn't. Anyway, I don't have the laptop in my hands yet, but if time permits I will dig into this a bit. If anyone comes across board schematic, make it known.

You mean the 335. Probably right, at least with the second editon of the MX, if you go by 3DMarks. Stock E14s get 6700-6900. The MX11xR2 gets 6970, according to notebookcheck. Scroll down the link and expand the 3DMark06 results.

Still, if there's a difference, it's not much.

I ran some more tests, but used 3DMark06 this time instead of the FurMark "stability" tests. Again, I used MSI Afterburner and Catalyst 10.6 "jury rigged" (thanks to MagusDraco) to apply my overclocking settings.

    3DMark06 Scores as follows:
    525/848: 7519
    560/800: 7605
    560/840: 7676
    560/840: 7679
    560/840: 7675
    560/840: 7672

    and the ones that failed:
    580/800
    580/848
    575/800
    570/800
    565/848
    560/840

The reason why I repeated the 560/840 option so many times was because it actually failed once, but the success rate so far is 5/6 or 83%. Temps also didn't go above the low 70's with a notebook cooler.

Also, one thing I found interesting was that some of the settings that passed the FurMark tests couldn't run in 3DMark06. Here is a link to my FurMark testing post: http://forum.notebookreview.com/6505385-post414.html
If anyone could shed some light on this it would be gladly appreciated.

If anyone has any requests or comments for me, feel free to ask!

How are your 3d mark vantage scores? Be useful to know the scores at the stock speed as well, as that should give an indicator on how that terribly "underclocked" 5650 performs on more modern game engines compared to the 335.

Lauzy, you beat me to the punch! :D At least out clocks are all different. Maybe someone needs to collate all this on an excel sheet or something. I ran a bunch of 3DMark06 tests too (without external monitor, though - so that means 1280x768). This is with the i-520m, 8GB, clean install, yadda yadda.

    450/800 (stock clocks):
    3D Mark score: 6893
    SM 2.0 score: 2453
    SM 3.0 score: 3045
    CPU score: 2804

    500/800:
    3D Mark score: 7196
    SM 2.0 score: 2572
    SM 3.0 score: 3205
    CPU score: 2824

    525/800:
    3D Mark score: 7383
    SM 2.0 score: 2662
    SM 3.0 score: 3300
    CPU score: 2805

550/800 (stock for Acer 3820, etc):
    3D Mark score: 7530
    SM 2.0 score: 2722
    SM 3.0 score: 3378
    CPU score: 2812

    565/800 (yay some actual overclocking!):
    3D Mark score: 7595
    SM 2.0 score: 2747
    SM 3.0 score: 3418
    CPU score: 2808

    575/800:
    3D Mark score: 7646
    SM 2.0 score: 2770
    SM 3.0 score: 3445
    CPU score: 2805

    550/850
    3D Mark score: 7685
    (lost the rest of it!)

575/850 worked but Futuremark wouldn't give me any score.

585/850 crashed twice, and they ya go.

You guys should inundate HP with emails about the 5650 being undervolted. You shouldn't have to overclock to a level of performance for which you paid.

It would be nice, but again, the 5650 is spec'ed with GPU at 450 to 650MHz. This one just happens to be at 450MHz, most likely for cost reasons.

6970 is probably running at screen's native resolution of 1366x768 not default of 1280x1024. R1 M11x got about 6100-6200 3DMark06. I doubt the CPU will increase the score by 700-800 3DMarks. It influences it maybe 5% at best, but not 12%.

Woops, I meant the temps were in the 60's haha. Without the cooler, the video card still remained cool with temps of low 70's, so that is good.

I will try to test 3d mark vantage scores tomorrow when I have time tomorrow evening. I will be sure to test the 450/800 settings as well ;P
I really hope that HP only undervolted the thing instead of giving us lower quality 5650's.

Hey Thanatos, glad to see that there are others out there running tests as well. But...Darn! I can't seem to get past 560 on the core speed clock. Maybe I will try again with lower memory speed settings. Oh, and I have an i5-450m, 160gb ssd, 4gb ram, clean install, etc.

You are 100% correct. This is unacceptable in a premium laptop.

Hey I was looking for a couple games, and Saints row 2 caught my eye.
Can you run it says the envy 14 passes on everything 'cept the video card, which is super bizzare
I think it's a glitch (this happens in every game o_O)
but here's what it says :

    Video Card
Recommended: 256MB 3D graphics card with Shader Model 3.0 support (NVIDIA 8800GT or ATI HD3850 or better)
You Have: ATI display adapter (0x68C1)
Upgrade Suggested: Unfortunately, your Video Card does not meet this requirement. Click here to see some recommendations.
Features: Recommended attributes of your Video Card
    Required You Have
Video RAM 256 MB 2.6 GB
    3D Yes Yes
    Hardware T&L Yes Yes
    Pixel Shader version 3.0 4.0
    Vertex Shader version 3.0 4.

    Glitch yes?

Great point! You can complain, but not sure how that's going to help existing owners since the GPU is part of the mainboard. I doubt they'll replace hundreds (if not thousands) of laptop mainboards for free if its not a recall. However, maybe they'll offer a discount or something and give you the choice. But IMHO, if you can reach the avg stock speed of 550MHz, then even with one designed to clock at that anything over that is gravy.

I would think that it is most likely a glitch seeing how some programs I run, including steam, don't even have the video card in their database.

I have 330m performance in my stock 5650 card.
    That's why I am complaining.
