For the people here that own the new ENVY 15, does anyone know yet how to get the keyboard out?

I received my Envy 15 yesterday but I will be returning it.

    - It was specified to come with a IPS panel. Instead I got the Chi Mei CMN15BB. Terrible viewing angles and washed out colors, especially with anything else than maximum brightness.
    - It was specified to come with a GT 750M GDDR5, instead it was DDR3. No surprise or dealbreaker, but still.
    - The keyboard flex is really bad. It's usable, but I expect better for such a critical feature as the main input device. Embarassing that HP thinks it's okay to ship something as bad as this.

It is also really loud. Perhaps this is simple inevitable with these components and form factor. I might have to revise my own expectations and choose a more bulky laptop with better room for proper cooling.

Is it loud all the time or only under gaming load? How hot is it getting? Do you have the 4700, 4900 or the 4702 CPU?

Bummer. The keyboard flex is pretty much a dealbreaker for me; I really need a great keyboard, but unfortunately it seems like the great keyboards are a $500 premium.

Only under load I'd say. I haven't been that thorough in my investigations though. It might be audible in a more quiet environment. The upside of the rampant fan under load is that temperatures seem to be held in check. I got the 4702MQ and during a thity minute session of playing Star Craft 2 the temperature never went past 75°C on any core. When I stopped monitoring, the temperature even seemed to be decreasing somewhat. It's also really hot here 30°C approx so with that taken into account it's maybe not that bad.

The Chi Mei CMN15BB is an absolute terrible FHD panel (which I have pointed out before), it is seriously on par with a normal HD 1366 x 768 panel in all aspects, even worse (some of you may not be able to see it) it exhibits a grainy effect that runs from top to bottom (vertical columns) in even thin lines. Solid colours show this up best, whites, blues, greens.

Some of us know that the GDDR5 was a wishful factor, even when some people in other regions had it listed by HP as GDDR5, where as the remainder of the world had listed the 750M with DDR3. You are right, you shouldn't have to accept it, it is such a bad error which in turns affects the expected performance of the GPU in general. However the 750M with DDR3 performs well due to it very high core clocks, if its any consolation to anyone otherwise.

Keyboard flex is the major flaw in the envy 15j, it really is unacceptable. You are right, HP should not of shipped a product that cost this much without making sure this keyboard input device is up to standard. It is not so much the actual keys (I have one key the is not perfectly straight) which are otherwise just as good as last years dv6, the problem is in the way the keyboard is mounted in the chassis, it cause the keyboard to protrude upward in the centre left and right hand sides, thus why it flex when you press down on a key, you are actually pressing the a entire section of the keyboard down each time you press a single key.

The metal base plate on the keyboard is not sitting flush with notebook chassis, which holds the keyboard place. When you press a key down, you end up pressing the keyboards underside metal plate (which holds all the keys) down on to the chassis. This happens with every keystroke, and drives you mad after typing on it for a extended period of time, and then later with even just a couple of sentences because you know what to expect from it.

I would say your expectation of the cooling system is a little extreme, yeah I could understand that it is hotter there and the fan maybe kicking into its top gear, which is pretty noisy. Here at the moment the temperature is around 23c inside, and the fan runs at an acceptable level (before top gear). Those temps you got are good, and for a single cooling solution cooling a quad core CPU with a middle range GPU it really does a good job, also does it without thermal throttling.

btw. The worst thing, and this mean everyone, the keyboard flex is the most unacceptable part notebook. HP will not fix this, as this is a design fault, well at least if you buy this notebook at the moment until they change the design to hold it down in place.
The only way I believe to fix the keyboard, is to remove the keyboard yourself and then apply double sided tape to hold it down (even that may not work). Although I got no idea how this particular keyboard comes out (I have tried), there seems to no screws related to releasing the keyboard and pushing it out from the top, in order to try out what might be a fix.

Got a 4700mq + 740m non-touch with everything else maxxed for about 780 after cashback, good deal for the machine ?

I was thinking of situations where I would use the touch but it seemed to weigh significantly less so I went without it .

And I'm definitely curious to see if I like the HD screen.

Those who got the first batch, could u try whether is the laptop affected by the haswell chipset USB3.0 bug ?
It means that when you plug in USB 3.0 Storage device, put the machine to sleep, when it wakes up it could not recongnise the device and have to unplug and plug in again.

It affects all new first batch of haswell, that is the main reason why other major brands have not started shipping haswell laptop which in the industry always eager to roll out their new specs to woo in more future customer but not for the case of haswell.

If I recall correctly, this is an isolated issue to particular storage devices that are used with USB3, not every storage device. No big deal really, and not life threating like the chipset big of series 6 when Sandy Bridge first came out, that could potentially end up fatal.

im personally really curious on how long the battery will last compared to the stated 9.5 hrs....so many numbers floating around since release but no real life numbers....mine is ordered with the igp hd 4000/4600 so that might increase life in theory...and the "flimsy" keyboard some people have reported...

    I'd like to know about

    - The screen
    - Battery Life
    - If you got the 740m, how it stacks up to the iGPU
    - And if you own an mSata could you use it as a boot drive (128gb+) .

I didn't get an mSATA drive so I can't help with that.

As for my configuration I got

    740M
    4800QM

I'll let you guys know about the battery life and screen first. As for SSD I first need to purchase one and I'm still deciding between the latest Crucial, Samsung, and Seagate....if anyone has any suggestions let me know.

Actually recieved my today much earlier then the estimated delivery which was set for monday. Was impressed with the design and the thiness. I was really happy to see that the envy non touch that I got didnt have the grippy ribbed trackpad I saw on the best buy model. I can really rate the 1080p screen because this is the first full hd laptop I purchased.

Okay so I learned some basic stuff. The words in parentheses are what displays after you press the button along the bottom of the black screen.

F10 --> (Bios Startup Options) --> BIOS Page. InsydeH20 Setup Utility Rev 3.7

F11 --> (System Recovery) --> UEFI Page. From there you can enter the Black/White Startup Menu Screen through Troubleshoot/Advanced Options/UEFI Firmware Settings

ESC --> (Pause Start Up) --> Black/White Startup Menu

just mash the F buttons during startup. always works :)

I installed the SSD from my old laptop. Fresh usb install of Windows 7, that was fun to figure out.. Had to roll a custom iso that included intel usb 3.0 drivers to be able to run the installer, plus added the other drivers while I was at it. The only issue was the RT nic driver, needed the proper win7 driver from RT. Also ran the installers for the software I wanted, beats, finger print, vga. stuff from C:\SWsetup\drivers.

I keep with the Nvidia drivers and software from HP. I dont know if direct Nvidia drivers would be better or not.

win 7 vs win 8 3dmark11 scored about the same, just slightly under. perhaps it needs to burn in the drivers.

    Win 7 / Win 8
    p1895 / p1906
    GPU: 1787 / 1803

    Valley was identical
    Fps 11.9
    Score 500

    Envy 15
    i5
    740M

So full brightness is on and I fully charged the battery and right now it says 83% left and that translates into 1 hour and 54 minutes. When it was 100% it was an 1 hour earlier. So right now I'm estimating around 3 hours....

As for benchmarks what program do you want me to use to do these benchmarks and how do I test the 740M versus the Intel HD 4600?

    Furmark Graphics Card
Prime 64 Intel Quad Core Processor
    Crystal Disk Mark Disk Performance
    RealTemp Monitor Notebook Temperature

Those are a few programs I've heard of and was planning on running but if you guys want to suggest something else or better I'll consider it.

EDIT: Now the laptop is saying 4 Hours & 57 Minutes at 80% left!

I hope this is true because if so this will be amazing!

Okay first impressions on the screen after consulting a fellow forum member so that I knew I was looking for the right thing.

The screen is really good IMO. I look up and down while staring at it straight on and the colors didn't wash out or look distorted.

How do I find out what make and model this screen is?

I would take the battery reader with a grain of salt, it can only guess .

But if battery is 5 or 6 hours+ that would be amazing .

    For the display
Download HWinfo, there should be a display or monitor tab. I am not sure but I think its only the 15 inch that has the poorer screens

You should use 3dmark11 so I can compare my scores :)

For choosing igpu or Nvidia you can right click on the app and select "run with graphics processor" . if that is not there you can enable it from the Nvidia control panel, Desktop menu. or you can configure it with the manage 3d settings in the Nvidia control panel

I am currently looking to buy a new laptop in Europe, and the HP Envy j009-ed caught my eye. It's brand spanking new, but I have one important question. It seems to come with 2x 5400rpm 1TB drives, but I'm wondering wether this laptop also has a mSATA slot so I could add a mSATA disk.

Anyone know if 'all' the new Envy's have a mSATA slot (even thought they might not be sold with an mSATA disk) or any place where I could get clarification on this?

So far I really love it! Boots up very quick and that even without an SSD. The screen is excellent IMO. I haven't had a chance to research it yet and see the details. But even if its not IPS I still think its a beautiful screen and colors look amazing and sharp enough for me....

that's totally awesome! it's configured with a GT 750m ( DDR3?). Recently all the envy series has mSata slots, so don't be worried; furthermore you can replace 1 HDD by a SSD, one for OS, the other for your stuff (just to save some battery). You also have to use some disk tools to copy os partition to the new SSD (I suggest parted magic)

I would like to keep both the SATA disks, and use them in RAID (Windows RAID), then boot from the mSATA SSD :) I currently have a Dell Inspiron 17R SE which is a fine laptop as well, and also has mSATA and 2x SATA slots.

So if the new Envy 17 has a mSATA slot... That's perfect! :)

Got mine setup and running....only thing I adjusted was brightness down to 60% and keyboard backlight on. and typed a long letter after full charge....according to battery stats it said 6 hrs 13mins with full battery and after 2 hrs of typing and some internet streaming itsaid 4hrs 30 mins....so with a little bit more adjusting I thing 7 hrs is possible...stays really cool to the touch, and the fan is very quiet....even if I pay attention and it spins upit's impressively quiet still.

Oh sorry probably should have restated specs, posted a few posts above....mine is 17" 1600-900, non touch. with 4700mq, IGP 4600, with only upgrades being blueray and backlit keyboard...everything else was left stock. not too shabby of a latest i7 laptop for $714.64 with taxes and shipped...I'm happy with my choice...

17" touch is now up on HP's site! So glad it isn't a best buy exclusive, now to wait for the 750 for an option and a good coupon code to go along with it.

Just got mine in today. Will have a full analysis/review by Sunday hopefully.

    First impressions:
    Gorgeous!!!
    Slim and light.
Trackpad is a POS, so far (have trouble resting one finger and scrolling with another finger)
Power brick is pretty big with a thick wire
Screen has a BEAUTIFUL color reproduction when looking at it head on. Not the best viewing angles vertically but horizontally is okay. Similar to my Asus G60Jx
    Speakers are BOSS
When closed pressing my finger on the cover has major flex
    Keyboard has no flex!
Boots up quick from sleep. Less than a second or two

Overall everything good about this laptop beats everything negative because I came from a 7.2lb laptop (Asus G60Jx). Plus including the Asus power brick made it like 8lbs. This hp is elegant and beautiful. Can't wait to try to game on it and see what it can do. Next week ill use it to DJ and then decide if I'm gonna return it and get a Lenovo 410p or a RazerBlade 14.

    My HP Specs:
    4900mq
    15' 1080 non touch display
    8gb ram
    1tb + mssd cache 24gb?
    Gt 740m

Will post a review hopefully Sunday with any benchmarks anyone wants to see.
I most likely will not be opening this laptop if i keep it so I won't be able to give anyone pics of the inside because I did purchase a 3yr warranty and don't know much about laptop disassembly and want to keep everything in tact for warranty claims.

Can you post a picture of the power-brink and a object for comparison .

If anyone has the none-dGPU version, could you post that brick as well, thanks !
