Yesterday I changed my Envy 15 because of dead pixel . Today i realize that the battery label have a flap of sticker at the 11.1V part peel out revealing orange part inside. I am bit paranoid after the dead pixel incident, would it affect the integrity of the battery ? As it seems to be because of a sharp edge knock that cause it . I don't remember dropping and used super glue to paste that part back. I changed once due to dead pixel with the retailer and was told i could not change another set again.

Has anyone else attempted the SSD recovery and had the same exact problems that madmook and ihanliang?
It's making wonder whether I should just but a retail copy of Winows 8 or not since this company refuses to make anything simple -
Yesterday I finally saw the Envy 15 and 17... Although HP Portugal states that the 15" is an IPS screen... It's not! It's really bad... and reflective. The 17" is much better, and it's matte. The keyboard is also much better in the 17", it doesn't flex as much as the 15"... It's a pitty, as the Envy 15 is such a nice machine.
I still can't find any confirmation if the mSATA slot can be used as the main drive, with a large SSD -
-
Wats with the combo of mSATA+Hybrid HDD? kinda redundant to have two caching did anyone get this combo?
-
Has anyone had opportunity to try the 15t-j000 Quad Edition and the 15t-j000 TouchSmart Quad Edition?
I currently have the TouchSmart version, but the weight is bothering me. I am debating if switching to the 15t-j000 Quad Edition will lower the weight and allow the screen to tilt back farther than the TouchSmart model, which does not tilt back much. -
Can you post a picture of how far you can tilt the screen back on your lap, until it tips over .
What SATA the mSata slot is, 2 or 3 ?
Anyone play the the Lenovo y410p 900 reso ?
I want to compare the 1080p screen of the 15 to the y410p .
And finally, for those who got the 17 inch 1080p version, if you ordered you from the HP store have you seen the one in BestBuy ? Are the screens exclusive to BB ? Because the 17 inch looks amazing when I went to see it . -
However, I grow more and more skeptical that a 750m model is actually coming stateside. Already mid-july and no word from HP. -
my understanding is that mSATA is a regular SATA interface over a mini-PCIe connector. Still SATA going to SATA controller. So I don't see why it wouldn't run just like a SSD at the SSD speed, SATA 3.
The part that I don't get is that hp would limit the amount of RAM when using an mSata. .
I would love to try it but I don't have the money to drop on parts nor is it not necessary for my application.
UPDATE:
I did some research about the intel software that is used for the cache feature. I think that is the cause of the Ram limitation.
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Hardwa...-working-when-RAM-upgraded/m-p/2342547#M15496
Reading tthat I suspect that HP created there installs to only work up to 8 gb although I am not sure how it works with 8 gb.
My basic understanding is that the msata is split in two partitions. One is the same size of available ram While the other must be a minimum of 18.6 gb. The ram partition is used to dump the ram to an ssd to speed hibernation and sleep modes, rapid start. The other partition is used for the acceleration of the other hard drive.
I don't get that with a minimum requirement of 18.6 gb for acceleration and 8 gb for rapid start it would require an msata of 26.6gbs not the 24 gb that is supplied.
So if upgrading to 16 gb of ram you would need an msata of 18.6 and 16 so 34.6 gb.
So a new larger msata would be required to keep the cache / acceleration features when upgrading to over 8gbs of ram.
But if you have to get a new msata anyways why no get it large enough to host the OS (assuming its possible) and forget about the cache and enjoy up to 16 gbs of ram. -

Some info on the mSATA slot, I have posted in my review thread, link below, shows you how to add SSD caching briefly.
I upgraded to SSD caching when I had just the 5400rpm drive, the performance is now out of this world

Can someone post a benchmark between the gk208 ddr3 64bit version of the geforce 740m, and the hd4600?
-
Does anyone know if the FHD screen on the non touchscreen HP ENVY 15t-j000 Quad is similar to the TouchSmart panel?
-
After all your complaining I thought you were going to return your Envy 15 and go get another manufacturers laptop?
Also has anyone added a second HDD into the second slot alongside the primary SSD? And if so is the caddy that connects the drive to the laptop inside there? -
is it a lot faster after the mSATA? Im thinkin if i should get 64gb mSATA and install myself instead of getting Hybrid HDD+24gb mSATA from HP coz i found out the hybrid cache is only 8gb.

Anyone have problem with then keyboard space bar not working perfectly ?

I'm having problems removing the original HDD. I removed the service cover and I see the primary drive on the bottom left surrounded by the blue thin kinda plastic material. I've got the manual from HP's website pulled up and it says to disconnect the hard drive cable from the system board and then remove it. Then use the tab to remove the hard drive from the hard drive bay.
The diagram is pointing to the bottom right but I don't see anything that resembles what is within the zoomed in circle...
If anyone can help please PM -
Anyone else think these models look worse than the old ones?
-
I've read this entire thread. -
Just got mines, screen isn't as bad as I thought it would be 15 non-touch . Though there were some dead / tuck pixels which I had to fix with just rubbing the screen with a microfiber while a flashing background was on, or they were particles stuck behind the screen, either way I think I got them all out .
Things I noticed, the HDD kinda makes that scratching sound which is similar to to my PC when it's writing, I don't know if this is normal or not, though not all the time and you can kind of have to concentrate to hear it .
Also if you move the screen, it kinda of makes a faint creaking sound, especially on the right hinge area . Don't know if this is normal either .
I don't know if the creaking warrents the hassle of a return, maybe if they give me another discount on top .....
I'm going to test some games on it but so far is looks good to me . -
Well after several mini heart attacks I finally got it out and was able to remove the blue plastic casing around the factory drive. I attached it to the Samsung 840 Poo SSD and connected it to the motherboard.
Now running the official Recovery Media that HP sent me. Disc 2 of 3 so far......praying very hard now. There's a 4 disc titled Application & Driver Recovery DVD but I'm not sure if I'll need it.... -
No one will need go with hybrid drive, and standard drive is absolutely fine on it own with SDD cache combination.
Yeah just buy the standard 5400rpm drive (save your money) and add your SSD of choice up to 64GB in size, as 64GB is the physical limit imposed by Intel for caching. Setting up only take a couple of clicks of the mouse to add on to a already running system.
Only thing you will need is a tiny screw to hold down the mSATA drive, as HP does not supply one with the laptop, if you buy the machine without the mSATA pre-installed -
Can you boot off the msata slot if you wanted to? Like, drop a 128GB msata in the msata slot, and migrate the OS to it?
-
Recovery failed...
Trying again but if it doesn't work will be calling HP. -
Hi,
Can someone who bought the mSATA drive installed from HP post a picture on how it is configured in the Disk manager?
right click my computer - manage - disk management
If you could make it so you can read everything, that would be nice.
Thanks! -
Anyone know what the status LED next the power port is ? It glowed red when it was low on battery but what does white mean ?
-
can anyone help me??? I copied windows 8 to my ssd and i tried booting the laptop from the ssd and it would just restart saying i didnt have a boot option. What does this mean?? i copied everything the hdd has, also in 5 partitions, its identical. How do i make it bootable?

sounds gr8

Recovery Failed yet AGAIN.
Here's the error message I keep getting. This is after 3 Recovery Discs & 1 "Application & Driver Recovery DVD"
ChkErrBB.CMD : Detect some error during PININST_BBV.
ChkErrBB.CMD : Check c:\system.sav\logs\BurnBootWarn.log
ChkErrBB.CMD : or, check c:\system.sav\logs\BurnBootMerge.log
I called HP Tech Support which has been utterly useless as I expected them to be. So now I'm wasting my time doing a disk check of the brand new Samsung SSD that I just replaced the factory HDD with. When I call back I'm going to demand some real action or just return the notebook. -
Step 2 is re-boot with the recovery media, and now on the option screen the "System Recovery" option should be selectable, so choose that, and after going through the whole rigamarole again it should finally work.
And yeah, the hard drive "caddy" is just a glorified rubberband, I was very wary about the whole thing too when I first opened it up. -
How do you switch the graphics ?
-
This version is not available in my area so had someone in the US order it and send to me.

Already have a Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD and Hitachi 1TB 7200 RPM HDD ready to install when it arrives, which should be today/tomorrow, it's clearing customs now, which can take a while.
I ordered the two 750GB HDDs, will use them in external enclosures for backups and data, will also have the hardware for both HDD bays.
You need to do a Clean Install or clone the original HDD to the SSD.
I'm going to use Macrium Reflect Free version or the Samsung included software to do this.
You shouldn't have any boot problems with clonning, if there are issues they can be fixed.
My 2 cents on SSD caching.
In order of best performance starting with a HDD, then SSD caching, and by far the best performance will be with a SSD as OS/program drive.
SSD caching is for people that don't want to spend the money for a 64GB or larger SSD. It does improve the speed for bootup and some programs, but only ones you use the most.
My first SSD was a 40GB Intel x25-v, in a desktop, it was tight but had the OS and all programs installed, HDD for all personal data, it was very fast.
If you have a 64GB or larger SSD, SATA or mSATA, it is best to use it for the OS/program drive. You will see noticeable performance increase on just about everything.
I think this is why Intel has the 64GB limit on SSD caching, any SSD that size or larger should be used for a OS/program drive, HDD for data, if possible.
Some people can get by with a small SSD on a small laptop if need be.
Patiently (NOT) waiting for my new laptop ....... -
So is it normal for some creaking when moving the screen, at the hinge area especially ?

Ok seems today all hope of removing the keyboard with a couple of screws and then just pop it out has totally gone out the window.
To get the keyboard out requires removing at least the system/motherboard to even just get to it
I was hoping to strengthen the fitting of the keyboard to reduce flex, but can't be bothered now it going to be this much work.
Even if get the keyboard out, the actual keyboard sits on a "keyboard shield". The shield part has some really big square like holes on the left hand side of it, and then 3 smaller square holes on the right hand side. Basically what this means is there is not way to stop it for flexing, and explains why it flexes so heavily in those areas in the first place.
The keyboard it my biggest ripe with the entire notebook, feel really disappointed now I can't do anything about it. Past the time I can return it, and have spent extra bring new upgrades. Oh well I will just have to live with it now.
Before removing the keyboard, follow these steps:
1. Turn off the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
2. Disconnect the power from the computer by unplugging the power cord from the computer.
3. Disconnect all external devices from the computer.
4. Remove the battery (see Battery on page 43), and then remove the following components:
a. Solid-state drive (see Solid-state drive on page 44)
b. Hard drive (see Hard drive on page 47)
c. Base enclosure (see Base enclosure on page 55)
d. System board (see System board on page 66)
e. Connector board (see Connector board on page 80)
f. Subwoofer (see Subwoofer on page 83)
g. Rear speaker (see Rear speakers on page 85)
h. Power button board (see Power button board on page 93)
Remove the keyboard:
1. Remove the seven Phillips PM2.0×2.9 screws (1) that secure the keyboard shield to the computer.
2. Release the ground loop tape (2).
There is more steps for getting the actual keyboard out that goes up to step 9. -
Do u know how to set the mSATA as main OS drive? I think i read somewhere its very hard to do because of the HP BIOS or something.. but wont that only make it fast in accessing windows files/programs (that are in the mSATA) and still be slow when u access the HDD? so its like the same thing as using the mSATA boost

Hi! I have browsed trough this thread and have some questions.
I plan to get a hp j107eo from the swedish HP store. Now the thing is that is says that the 750M is a GDDR5 version and that the 15 inch FHD display is a IPS one. Can this information be correct or is the display a standard one and the GPU only GDDR3?
The price is 9500kr, around 1450 US dollar

Question for any new 17 owner:
Anyone know if any of the 9-cell batteries from previous version will work with the new one? I'm not at all familiar with HP's conventions with stuff like this. -
I just sent my ENVY 15 to HP . 1st time to retailer due to dead pixel , this time due to space bar not working. If replaced would be my 3rd one. I ask about the keyboard flex, the person smiled and say to try their best to fix. -
So I gamed for a little bit on the envy 15 today.
Here's a refresher of my specs:
- i7-4900mq
- 8GB Ram (1 DIMM)
- 1TB Hard Drive
- 15 non-touch 1080p display
- nvidia 740m
- 24gb ssd cache
I played need for speed most wanted on both the integrated and dedicated gpus
integrated
with FRAPS running i was able to get a consistent 17-25 fps while played on the intel card with the resolution at 1080p and the settings at low to medium. thats pretty good! if I lower the resolution down to 1366x768 and then crank some details up ill probably be able to get a consistent 20-25!
Dedicated Nvidia Card
With the resolution at 1080p i had to keep all the settings at low to get a consistent 25-27 fps
with the resoltion turned down to 1600x900 and the settings at medium to high i was getting a solid 30-32 fps which looked beautiful and performed beautifully.
the fans only spun up once and got pretty loud but if you have the volume up youll never notice
the fan never spun up while playing on the integrated card though.
overall im happy with this laptop. I really wanted a razer but definitely will not pay 2k for a machine with a screen similar to the envy i have now and im not that serious of a gamer so this laptop will do just fine.
I cant seem to get my battery calibrated right now hopefully before school starts ill be seeing 4-6 hours of battery life. -

lets just hope HP releases some REAL ENVY notebooks some time again, and not just envy branded DV series successors.
i mean ENVY 17 3D wich a high-end GPU (radeon 8850 or gf760/770 minimum).
since my more than 2 year old envy 17 3D w/ i7-720qm and mobility 5850 (1GB GDDR5 w/ 128bit bus) beats the **** out of these when it comes to graphics performance, even though it overheats and gets throttled, still its far beyond those 740m/750m GDDR3.
