Hi,
Does anyone know if the HP Envy Touchsmart 17 (m7-j010dx) that comes with a fingerprint reader also includes a TPM chip ?
Thanks!

Hi,
I received my HP ENVY 15t-j000 Quad Edition (non-touch) a few days back. I really like the laptop. It is quiet, light and fast. I had originally bought HP ENVY dv6t-7300 Quad Edition but exchanged it with the new version for Haswell. My only issue is the design and functionality of the trackpad. It is really hard to click and even harder to drag and drop. This was my issue with dv6 as well. Does anyone else experience this? Does it get better with use? I really don't want to return the laptop *again* but would like to hear some views here. -
You need to disable acceleration in Intel Rapid Storage Technology, then reformat the mSATA SSD.
This link explains it well: The Definitive Guide to Clean Install OS on a mSSD Cache Equipped Laptop
You won't need to change anything in your BIOS, caching is actually a software RAID, disabling it and formatting the SSD will allow you to clean install or clone your HDD to the SSD.
As mentioned in the link above be sure to make an image backup first, just in case. I wouldn't use the Windows backup, free third party programs are very good, I use the free Macrium Reflect and have had very good results.
In step #5, choose GPT if your HDD is using GPT format.
Don't do step #10 if you want to use the mSATA SSD as your boot drive.
If you have the OS and all your programs on the SSD, your system will run very fast, the files loaded from the HDD will open and run noticeably faster than they will if the SSD is used for caching. -
Anyone with the 15 inch backlit keyboard, the wireless LED won't turn off when I turn on and off the backlit .
-
I'm actually very pleased with the new Envys so far. Not much of a gamer so the graphics card part (which seems to be the main gripe the hard core gamers) doesn't matter as much to me. Design wise its simple and elegant and a lot more appealing than the last gen "true Envy" line.
-
i returned this laptop. The screen is okay, nothing special really, feels like you're looking at a mirror really, you can see ALL reflections. I also didn't like the fact that they COMPLETELY attached the back of the laptop to the keyboard, so you can't open it to add an ssd. I also found out they hid 3-4 screws when i was opening the laptop....
-
the last gen also was quite ugly because of its plastic plain grey lid prone to fingerprints... take a look at the original envy 1000 series - full-metal body & lid, lid with engraved patterns never seen before on any notebook except some ultra-stylish designer notebooks you would have to pay double the price of their non-designer parts for just because of their design, slot-loading optical drive, 120hz display, although glossy still very good and low-reflecting, and of course, high-end cpu & gpu inside.
-
I have the 17 with a backlit keyboard. The indicator led for the wireless button (F12) as well as the caps lock led appear to be separate from the backlighting, meaning it looks like it'll have to be permanently on.
-
Do the non-backlit keyboards have this as well I wonder, if so or if not is there a way to turn them off .
-
Most likely yes, the regular keyboards also have these indicator leds. You could take a black sharpie to the little circle to cover the led, I guess.
-
wEW this setup sounds better. i think ill get 64gb mSATA n install os there but it costs around 80 bucks.
BTW is there any Disadvantage? I mean, this is like best bang for the buck than getting a real SSD.
-
No disadvantages, the standard SATA SSD and the mSATA SSD are the same, if the mSATA port is 6GB/s and most newer laptops are, the units themselves are the same architecture just different connector.
If you don't have two HDD drive bays, like the 15t-j, but have the mSATA and one HDD bay, it will be the same performance as if you had two HDD bays.
If I had one mSATA port and one HDD bay I would definitely use the mSATA port for a OS/programs boot drive. -
Which model did you have?
-
Hi , i have a service manual for those who are interested in dismantling their Envy 15 . Please PM me if you need as i cannot upload here. With all indication of screw location and even white list parts.
-
So I finally did a clean install of Windows 8 Pro on my Samsung 840 Pro SSD.
The difference is honestly quite astounding. Even when the HDD was in Win8 booted relatively quick (compared to Windows 7) but now with the SSD? Instantaneous! There's barely a second to hit ESC in case you want to go into the Start Up Menu or the UEFI/BIOS.
The system as a whole is ridiculously fast. Everything runs buttery smooth so far. Will play a Bluray movie on it when I get a chance to see how it performs under that.
My only problem is with certain drivers from HP's website not working. The Broadcom Bluetooth one doesn't work. It says it doesn't detect a Bluetooth device within my notebook. The driver for MEI also isn't working. -

Backlit Keyboard
HP TrueVision HD Webcam w/ integrated digital mic

This is the HP Envy I want to get. Is the hybrid drive worth the upgrade? I was considering getting the 750gb Momentus XT is the 1TB hybrid drive comparable? Can I upgrade the mSata slot even though I have 16 gb ram?
Thanks for the response. (need to know before the 20% of coupon ends!) -
Don't forget to sign up for the student program too...it's free and it instantly lowers the prices of hp products on their site...the 17t-j000 quads start at $845 instead of $899....I personally called in my order after signing up for the student program (open to everyone) and built what I wanted Withe a rep..the website totals were incorrect for some reason....student program also works with the current promos hp advertises too...hope that helps save a few more bux.
-
Where is the student program.
Is it the student academy program? Can I call back in and tell to get my price adjusted? -
From my understanding you can use the mSATA slot as either a second hard drive or a acceleration cache. If you use it as an acceleration cache, your mSATA drive needs to be at least 16GB larger than your system memory:
8 GB RAM
minimum 24GB mSSD
12 GB RAM
minimum 28GB mSSD
16 GB RAM
minimum 32GB mSSD

So I did a system recovery from the recovery menu and now my fingerprint scanner is not working...anyone else had this issue?

Anyone who has done a clean install of Windows 8 on the Envy 17 or Envy 15 how did you get the Bluetooth to work on your notebook?
-
Yeah it's the student academy program...just have to register for it online and when you log into hp site all prices are lower....like in my case my 175-j000 quad was $695 during 4th of July week instead of $899 before customizing and I was able to use an additional 50 off coupon they had for 4th of July sale (expired now)....so out the door mine was $714.64 shipped (free shipping)....I had registered prior to ordering so when I called because of the totals coming up wrong on site, they logged in under my name and saw my discount and placed my order....don't know about the adjustment but worst case scenario, register for it and call and tell em you forgot that you were gonna sign up for the program...I don't see why they couldn't adjust it....you'll be amazed at how much lower some of the prices are on various models...

Try Intel drivers: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/De...Windows 8*&DownloadType=Software Applications
I got the Centrino 2230 in my Envy 17, which is a combo wifi and bluetooth card. I think that's why Broadcom drivers aren't doing anything for you. -
For those who got the 17 inch from HP, have you seen the ones at BestBuy, trying to figure out if the ultra good display is BB exclusive .
Edit : The woes of being a bit slimmer then other 15'6s, it won't fit in a normal case logic 15.6inch sleeve +.+ -
Has anyone found any good slip cases for the 15in envy? Want something slim and sleek so I can carry the laptop and some books around school

What's everyones shut down time ? I got the 15 with the hybrid and it takes a 2 - 4 mins before the power LED to shut off .
-
Is there a bios option to choose to boot off of the msata SSD instead of the hard drive?
Also,
Can some of you list your battery life, and configuration? -
There is .
So far I've gotten about 5 hours doing multiply stuff with wifi-on .
Anyone with a 15 non-touch, could you close the model clamshell and see if the right side is sticking up a bit more . When closed, the left side is all shut and I can't push down and it, but the right side jiggles up and down slightly when I do this . -
Thank you
Is there a setting to completely shut off the 740m? It'd be nice to save a ton of battery when I'm internet derping (or homework, college nstuff, yay discount btw)
So I'm taking a guess that HP is lying their off about the 9 hour and 45 minute battery life.
I ordered one of these, and I'm waiting for it to come in the mail. It should ship on the 25th.
15t j000 with 16 gigs of ram, geforce 740m, backlit keyboard, hybrid drive, for a grand total price of 856$ after tax which I got 40$ refunded back to me, by using ebates.
Coupons, Promo Codes and Cash Back Savings - Ebates.com incase anyone wants to sign up for the same deal (yeah, that's a referral link, but really, I'm just trying to save people cash)
It's 5% back.
I combined it with custom20 coupon and student discount. The laptop would have been pretty close to 1100 without any of those -
I have the SAME problem. Weird...
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 4 Beta -
With all of that added hardware, how did you get it all the way down to $856? In my cart I have the custom20 coupon and the student discount, but am sitting at $951 after tax with the same build.
-
Pretty sure the palm rest area and surrounding keyboard if all alloy, but wondering about the lid which seems like plastic.
Has anyone scratched the top of their lid yet and taken a look at it? -
Before the coupon, before tax, but after student discount, my configuration cost 1005$

Am wondering if these are isolated issues or on all models, anyone else have a jiggle on the right side when shut in clamshell, the left side shuts all the way, the right not so much .
Also anyone find a sleeve that fits the 15 snuggly ? -
Well, I went ahead and bought one a custom quad edition.
Can we confirm that the palm rest area is aluminum? I'm pretty sure the rest is plastic though, unlike my Envy 14 1000series (I own one of the first ever HP envies, got mine on release day), which is all aluminum, although not unibody.
If the 750m comes out in the next 5 weeks this unit WILL be going back - provided that good coupon codes are still out.
For those who don't know, there is a non-customizable version out with the 750m, however the Custom20 coupon code does not work. -
I thought they only have a 21 day return policy
-
It takes them about 2 weeks to build it, then you get 21 days after that. That's where I came up with 5 weeks.
I assume the 21 days starts once we receive the computer. -
I'm starting to wonder if I should have just waited for the 750m. Depending on the game, it seems to be capable of 10%-30% more fps.
The Envy 17 I ordered may end up going back, even if I have to wait some time for an Envy17 with 750m and a 20%+ coupon.
My envy 14's HD 5650m disappointed me with it's graphics capability, leaving some really cool games unplayable. -
Hey P51,
When asking a HP rep. about the pad, alum. or plastic, he told me he was 99% sure it was plastic. He said it's all in the way they buff them out. That HP uses very little alum. due to wanting to keep the static elect. down. I do notice the pads on these models to have a alum. look and a dull slightly non -smooth finish feel. The best buy model does have the alum. looking pad but again, according the the HP rep. I talked to he stated it was buffed out to appear alum.
I also have on order a custom 17t quad and that non smooth dull pad has been a concern. I've seen it and played with it at a store and didn't think it was a deal killer. Will know after one week of heavy use. -
The lid is plastic. The flex on it is ridiculous.
The palm rest and keyboard are alloy. Bottom is soft touch plastic

I would like to know the battery life difference between the 740m version and hd4600 version for general browsing

Hmm so I assume this rebadged dv6 "Envy" means that HP is not planning to release a real Envy 15?
I have a gen 1.5 (1100) Envy 15 with an i7 820QM / ATI HD 5830- works fine, but a bit long in the tooth now, so looking for a replacement.
Deal-breaker for me on the 15t-j1000 is the lack of a DisplayPort, which means it can't output more than 1080p (technically HDMI 1.4 can do so, but not on the j1000, and most monitors don't do >1080p over HDMI anyway). I have a 27" 1440p monitor, currently connected to the old Envy at full res via HP's DisplayLink USB 3.0 dock, but I want to go native for a new machine. If ultrabooks like the MacBook Air can ship with a DisplayPort (which is royalty-free, btw, so cheap to add), there's no excuse for a machine with discrete graphics not to have it. Heck, the last-generation Envy 15 had one.
Also the build quality on the j1000 is atrocious for a "premium" machine-- low-grade plastic everywhere, massive keyboard and screen backpanel flex, cheapo components (e.g. Ralink 1x1 Wifi instead of Intel 2x2), no SSD option, etc. Unlike the earlier Envy models, it can't hold a candle to the likes of Apple and Asus. Why did HP even bother rebadging this junk as an "Envy"? (even if the brand's already been diluted to nothing with printers, monitors, and what not) -
Build quality is a real concern for me right now. I have an original generation, all aluminum Envy 14, and it's build quality has become something of a standard for me. If this new envy 17 is significantly worse I will be evaluating other options. I think that a lot of us will be making decisions about keeping this after a week of heavy use.
I've seen a few Asus rigs for slightly more that have more well rounded specs (670m gpu etc etc). -
Found a way to check, by using front teeth, yeah you heard right, then tap and move on the surface with your front teeth.
The sound you hear with your teeth on alloy be much louder than plastic, you will kind of hear it a little through your teeth. Also if you lightly move you teeth on it, it will feel a lot more coarse with alloy when compare to plastic.
If anyone does not believe this or it sounds crazy, try it, it really works. -
Can a mod delete this - sorry! Wrong Quote.
-
Hey TheAtreidesHawk,
Could you write up a step by step process - have an SSD but battled to do a clean install with windows 8 pro. Setup wouldn't continue due to some mismatch or something (Cant recall right now).
Would be much appreciated.

You know guys, since you can change the chosen drive in bios (or so I hear, mine hasn't been delivered yet), you could drop in a 128+ GB msata drive, and clone the image over
lifehacker has a bit on it

Well, finally found a way to reach the hp-acclaimed 9 hours of battery life-- left it on the lowest brightness setting ovenrnight with nothing running.

How do you switch the graphics from the IGU to the 740m
