I've installed a SSD on the mSATA port leaving the HDD inside. The SSD is for SO and applications, the HDD for data.

If you have SAMSUNG 8GB module at this moment - then the best option for you to get exactly same memory module to avoid problems related to asynchronous timings and volt-ampere-characteristics e.t.c. (this is very important for stability)chasmanian likes this.

thank you very much.
I did.
and I found it much cheaper:

so far, so good. no problems.Last edited: Jan 2, 2015 -
Pretty awesome deal on MSATA SSD, way more bang/buck than RAM http://m.tigerdirect.com/products/8920023

I've mounted a Crucial M500 480GB on mSATA. Very fast and reliable.

AntonioDB, do you have it setup as cache or primary drive?
I neglected to mention this MSATA SSD is $59 no rebates.chasmanian likes this. -
I use the SSD as primary for SO and data that I frequently use.
The HDD is for data storage: I don't need to accelerate it.
I've bought the 480GB SSD in May for about 175. -
thank you. I've got a 256 GB SSD.
now, kind of wishing I had gotten 512 GB.
as for bang/buck, I needed more RAM, from what I had heard.
it seems to be working good so far with my drum program.
I still have to test it out with piano VST's, though.
thanks again for all the help you guys. -
I've been struck with the choice between keeping only MSATA Plextor m5m (256 GB) + SSHD 1TB and replacing SSHD to pure SSD ...
And I really pleased with SAMSUNG 840 EVO 500GB 2.5" performance (the other choice were CRUCIAL MX100 500GB - adequate performance, but cannot beat RAPID tech ...)
Its damn fast when RAPID enabled because it properly and much more effectively handle write cache flushing IO prioritization via collaboration with operation system + keeping large read cache in the memory which work like "smart read ahead" buffer.
The only thing you need to benefit from it - large amount of RAM as it "eat" around 1GB (I have 16GB installed)
My advice: if you're IT PRO and want really fast PC, unbeatable performance in everyday tasks (not gaming) - buy normal 2.5" SSD.
2.5" devices beat mSATA devices by 30-50% on random one threaded IO.
Don't be missleaded with "advertisement parameters" like 32 thread random IO - this is completely unusual scenario applicable only for high load servers. Keep your eyes on 1threaded random and sequential read/write performancechasmanian likes this. -
I know this is an HP Envy thread.
but just in case its of help to others:
I have a ~5 year old Sony Vaio.
the HD just dies.
I will most likely get a Crucial MX100 512 GB SSD to replace it.
it has been recommended to me by a friend who knows a lot about this stuff. -
IMHO Crucial MX100 512 GB SSD - the best VALUE/MONEY choice. especially for 5yo laptop (assume there max of 8GB ram)
PS: Make sure your laptop support AHCI mode and SATA2 at least (SATA3 needed to fully benefit from new SSD). -
thank you very much vas.
I know that my Sony Vaio does support SATA 2. (I am told that will cap the speed. but its still good.)
I do not know about AHCI.
my Sony is a vpcsc31fm model.
googling, not really getting a clear picture. -

Is there any latest drivers thread for this series of laptops like other ?
-
I do not know.
just wanted to say that I am definitely liking my HP Envy more with 16 GB of RAM.
I have been using it a bit.
I am changing my mind a little.
its working pretty well these days. -
I ran DiskFresh on my HP (with Plextor SSD).
did not check the "read only" box.
oh well.Last edited: Feb 8, 2015 -
Anyone have issues with the envy 15 not hibernating. When laptop battery gets to critical level windows tries to get the laptop to hibernate but what I get is a black screen with the computer still on. Only way to stop it is by restarting the computer. When I manually tell it to hibernate screen will go dark for a few sec and then wake up again with the lock screen.

Most probably you have broken drivers/badware preventing from hibernate
1) also check if hibernate properly enabled using POWERCFG utility
2) no unidentified devices in device manager
3) all devices working properly
PS: also there might be wake on magic packet configured and something spamming these packets (obviously this is less probable case)trickbiker121 likes this. -
Thank you for your reply.
1. I tried diabling it and the renable it from POWERCFG multiple times with no luck.
2. under device manager there is no unidentified devices, all drivers seem up to date
3. haven't had any hardware issues.
Im not sure if there is any packet transfer I will try to turn off wifi and see if it will hibernate.
EDIT: still won't hibernate with wifi off
UPDATE: figured it out. It is having MSata as boot drive. Realy wish HP made it easy to boot from the MSata. Thanks again for your help.Last edited: Mar 11, 2015 -
Please check if you have enabled intel's rapid start technology ...
I'd recommend to disabled it ... I am unsure but there are little chance it can influence on sleep\hibernate process
PS: "magic packet" shouldn't work on WIFI connection. it work on Ethernet (when your LAN chip still little powered and wait for wake-up packet) - that's useful for home file-servers for power saving. -
Just checked sadly it was already disabled. I tried enabling rapid start by creating a partition but still no success.

Hi,
I would like to upgrade my laptop with a new IPS panel. I am italian and I read that you are italian and you suggested to contact you directly about where to buy a IPS screen compatible with the HP Envy 15j. I tried to do that but I really do not how to contact you
anyway I have looked for a LCD in different shops but now I am not sure which of the different SLBx buy. I am interested in a LCD IPS 1920x1080 (FHD) and MATTE screen. There are any difference between B2 and B6?
Thanks to all -
The B6 is wonderful : matte and IPS
I ve bought it from an italian reseller (LCDs comes from Holland or Germany) but I can't recommend him.
An year ago the screen was available from some others Germany sellers. -
Please, Can you contact me via private message (or something like that in this forum) ? Thus, you can give me the name of the shop and we can talk about the reseller
ThanThanks you

Hey,
Im considering an hp envy 15-J with i5-4200m,8gb ram,gt840.
1-Anyone has one of these, or just these specs? I have a 2nd gen quad core i7 now and i didn't want to downgrade much in that -regard, even though i what i usually do isn't that intensive.
2-Also, do your envy 15 laptops suffer from overheating compared to others? I had a compaq few years ago and some friends had hp's and they heated up like crazy. Is that still the case?
3-Also, all envy laptops have msata? I have seen it mentioned online but nothing on hp spec sheet for some reason
Thank you! -
1. It should be fine if you're not doing any CPU intensive tasks and also since its a normal dual core processor and not a ULV type CPU
2. Idk about the 15-inch envys since i have the 17-inch and never had any overheating problems even with a quad core CPU but with a Dual Core CPU it'll be even better since it'll use less heat than a quad core CPU.
3. The J series uses msata for sure, I dont think the newer models like the K and Q series has one.alex31 likes this. -
Thank you so much for your reply and feedback!
Im still undecided if i should go with the envy 15 i mentioned or spend a little more on something else, but the envy is quite a bit cheaper and thats a big plus.
I was afraid of overheating problems, i had them and read quite a bit about them on hp laptops but was hoping the new ones have improved on that and i see on your signature you have one, so thank you for your feedback.
About the msata, i was reading up on it and saw that the msata on the hp laptops was designed to be used as a cache drive and not a drive to use with OS on it and boot with, but that's what i wanted to do with it. It's not really possible to boot with the msata and select that on the bios or do we have that option in the settings? -
Is there anyone who have tried any other screen then SLB2, SLB5 or SLB6?
I can buy SLBA from Germany and tthe only difference is that on SLB2, SLB5 and SLB6 pin one on the connector says "No connection". See first picture.
On SLBA and SLC1 (Glossy) the pin one says "LCD Logic and driver power (3.3V Typ.)" See second picture.
Do you think it will work?

Hi,
I have been searching on using the msata with an ssd with the OS to boot (im considering an hp laptop and this is one of the main selling points for me), however, i have been reading reports of users that have trouble setting up the msata ssd as a boot device and that the bios doesn't recognize it and some have to use a different bootloader from what i found on the hp forum.
Did you had this kinda of issues or was an easy install? Did your bios recognized the msata ssd as a disk and let you boot with it?
Thanks -
It varies by model version. I have a J-100 and the only way I can get it to boot from msata is by only having the msata and no other HDD or doing a BCD edit which reroutes from the HDD to msata.( hibernate stops working using this method) j-000 how ever acts a little differently you can boot from msata by loading it without an HDD the first time then installing your HDD. If you load the bios menu You have to restart the process. The new Envy's don't come with msata. I recommend staying away from HP given all the issues software and hardware. I have two HP laptops and they both have hinge issues and HP refuses to fix it and new models still have this issue.

I simply put the SSD in the mSATA slot and then boot the notebook while pressing the ESC key and then F9 in order to choose the disk to boot from.

Thank you both.
It does seem to vary from series to series, some are easier than others. I ended up not going for the hp (still haven't picked an alternative though) and waited out some more because i read some issues with hdd giving errors and freezing out of the box, which isn't a good sign. Also, the keyboard flex on these seems annoying and something that i would have some issue getting used to.
Those construction problems and how hp deals with them don't please me either =/ tough choice, since visually its actually a interesting laptop and definitely more than what i have been founding in stores, the laptop market just doesn't seem to have a lot of interesting stuff in more affordable price ranges, at least in my view/for me. -
Quick question
Has anyone tried or installed windows 10 on the J-series? if so are there any problems with it? I might give it try then go back to windows 8.1 -
Installed win 10 on my j100 ts without any issue in fact it fixed my hibernate issue which i got by making the msata as primary ssd
Edit: well there was one small issue with synaptics where gestures setting would not save after restart. An easy fix by uninstalling driver and reinstalling them

Ok noticed. Sounds like a normal issue when upgrading to a new windows, hopefully
Ok thanks for the info. Sounds like a normal issue when upgrading a newer version of windows.
Decided to stay on 8.1 after the bad things i read about windows 10 -
Hi, everybody!
I have successfully installed LP156WF4 SLB7 in my Envy 15-j000er today, and it works perfectly. The size of new panel a bit more than factory one (maybe half millimeter
), but I did not have any problems during installation. How sad that HP does not sets a good IPS panels in the Envy series!
I think my next laptop will not HP... -
Is it possible to change the panel in a touchsmart display?

Hi, I'm considering buying the model j171ns with intel i7-4700mq and nvidia 840m but I have some doubts.
Is it too hot?
Is it worth waiting for a possible new model with an i7-5700hq?Last edited: Aug 23, 2015 -
It should be just fine and no its not worth the wait for an i7-5700hq if it happens. Theres not much a difference between those two cpus besides the clock speed (intel i7-4700mq = 2.4GHZ i7-5700hq = 2.7GHZ) But the i7-5700hq will have a slightly better battery life.

I upgraded my j029nr to windows 10 just for the hell of it and i ran into a lot of issues. Touchpad drivers are very buggy even when i reinstall them from HP. Fingerprint scanner is buggy and now it doesnt work correctly but sometimes it works and even using the windows 10 driver doesnt help. I disabled automatic driver updates but they still gets through somehow. Planning to go back to windows 8.1 as soon as possible, If you guys decide to upgrade to Windows 10 you're going to be doing a lot of tweaks just to get it right and ofc some driver hunting
-
I have the same problems in my q004tx.. If you found a good driver for the trackpad please share. Thanks
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk -
Sadly i havent found one yet. The one i got now is stable but it keeps resetting the settings back to default after a restart/shutdown and its the one from HP. Also dont let windows update to update your clickpad drivers otherwise it'll break it, My right click stopped working with those drivers.
-
I can't find a way to disable auto updating for drivers.. I have the reset problem too.. So confusing

Its in advanced system settings. Click the hardware tab then click on device installation settings and you should see the setting to turn them off.
Btw i went back to Windows 8.1 and everything is working as it should. -
Hi, I am trying to find an icm profile for the invy 15 j 104, but your link in the OP is dead. Could you please send it? It would be great
