I just got my 15-j105sa and quite pleased with it so far. I had been looking for an ultrabook but the low voltage processors didn't seem much of a performance jump form my 3 year old i5-480m laptop so I was interested to see this beast of a laptop in the shop ;) Quick search on cpubenchmark.net for i7-4700MQ and my mind was made! Ive been getting 4 hours battery life which is decent. Keyboard flex isn't an issue for me the only thing disappointing so far is the viewing angles but I can live with that. Oh and the speakers are excellent! I wasn't expecting much so I was pleasantly surprised the first time I used them.

I want to install an small SDD in addition to the HDD and have windows installed on the SSD and use that as my main drive. Will any msata SSD do or do I need to look for something in particular?
After that how do I do a clean install of Windows 8.1 on to the SSD? Ive not clean installed windows 8.x before. Doing it with a UEFI firmware (BIOS) embedded Windows 8.1 product key seems confusing, does anyone have a link to a guide? Do I have to create recovery media or can I just download the Windows 8.1 iso onto a USB and install from there? And finally how does one go about deleting all partitions form the HDD?

Sorry for wait. I finally opened laptop and it came with (from HP) a N156HGE-LB1. The one that came from Amazon is a SLB2. Although not SLB6 it is IPS. So I'm going to stick with that. Lower grade IPS than B6 but, I am happy with anything but TN.

Hm.. Strange. It is a matte which is fine. But its showing a white light on the wrong side of the screen when I turned it on. Will edit if I figure out..

EDIT: It looks amazing! Its a B2 but I gotta say I am impressed. The wire wasn't on tight enough with tape. I fixed it.

This is another proof that IPS are very very better screens than TN!
So the factory LCD can be changed for sure with these IPS models:
    - LP156WF4-SLB2
    - LP156WF4-SLB6

Anyone has tested any other LP156WF4 model?

Hm.. Seems after putting the bazel back on that the top 2 screws can't be done and the top stays uundone due to thickness. I am going to try to see if I did it wrong then edit this.

Edit: I had to push it in from the bottom to make it fit in the top. I got it all right now. :)

And ugh! Those little screws are hard to get back in.

Agreed. It's still has a screen door affect in comparison to my older Studio 17, but the viewing angles aren't "bad" from what I can see. I was just curious if anyone had tried an IPS panel in a 17.

    OK...new problem.

My trackpad button seems to be stuck. It seems to be stuck right in the middle. I can feel the left/right side of the button go down but they don't engage the actual mouse button function. The center of the button seems to be stuck on something or just dislodged. I assume that I need to get to the trackpad button from the inside to see what's the matter but before I did that I wanted to see if you guys had any options before I start dismantling this thing.

I just got myself a new Envy 15j-151 with the AMD processor+ graphics

I had to get it replaced by the store 4 times until I got a good one. First 2 had bad displays (stuck green pixels) and strange rolling-bars of light. 3rd one was an ex display unit which was fine until I noticed it was damaged.

Finally, on the 4th unit I have a keeper!

Screen is great, I have literally zero keyboard flex and the entire chassis feels very stiff and is creak free, which is better than the first 3 by miles. Seems HPs Q/C is a bit off on this line, nobody should have to go through 4 replacements to get a good one....

On the positive side, the AMD solution is very quick indeed and the dual graphics are working much better than my other HP with a i7 + NVidia 740M. Im getting a constant 50fps+ in all the MMOs I play on maximum settings in all but the most populated areas.

    Basic Specs:
    AMD 5750M + 8650g Graphics
    8750m 2gb 128b memory Graphics
    8gb DDR3L Ram (Samsung chips)
1tb Hybrid SSD/HD drive (I replaced this with my own 240gb SSD though)
    Ralink WiFi+Bluetooth
Non-touchscreen FHD display (I have the Chei Mei panel, but no screen door or other weirdness on this particular one)

For £649 its a good deal, if you get a good one!

Chi Mei TN panels mounted on Envys are a little better than AUO, but nothing to compare with the LG Philips IPS ones. Who have changed the display can confirm that the difference is as night and day.
If you can switch to Asus: you will get an amazing IPS screen.

    They are a lot better

I do notice one things though. The front of the laptop lid gets warm near the bottom from this screen. I assume that is normal because IPS shows more detail etc.

The touchscreen appears to be sealed, the entire thing has just one replacement part number.

Has anyone attempted or had to remove their panel from touchscreen unit?

    Hello,

I am interested in buying an Envy 15 laptop and I was very happy to find out that it had an mSata connector along with it's normal sata.

As the new line with the 840 Graphic cards appeared - i saw this in late august, I asked support here in France to confirm that they kept the msata connector.

they reply is that the HP envy touchsmart 15-j140nf has no msata connector.

I wish to add a curcial m550 256Gb mSata SSD to increase performance...

My question is: Has any of you this model in hand an could confirm if the mSata is really there ? I know July from HP support did not go with a screwdriver to their warehouse to check.... she just gave me this link: http://h20195.www2.hp.com/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=c04341531&doctype=data sheet&doclang=FR_FR&cc=fr&lc=fr,15-j140nf

The funny thing is that the previous j-103sn i wanted to buy did not mention the msata either...

Also: will it have a nice quality screen or I am going to ask them 'nicely' to change it for me?

    What to believe?

thank you all for a fast reply.

The j-103 has the mSATA connector for sure and I've never seen 15-j without the mSATA connector.
The manual doesn't clarify if mSATA is really present or not..... and the support people simply read manuals for you.

The display is terribly bad, but I doubt that they admit that.

the never refreshed models with the 840m graphics DO still have the msata connector. I have one of these models myself. J184sa. Im currently using a Kingston hyperX 2.5" SSD and a Crucial M500 480gb mSATA drive with no issues whatsoever

Using msata in these models did pose some problem as it was not recognized in BIOS so there is a way around. With BIOS update .63 any fixes or still same problem?

    Hi,

I have a HP ENVY 17-J184na and wondered if it was possible to replace the screen with a touch enabled one. I have heard that they are sealed units so getting the digitizer is not possible.
Looking at the service manual i cannot see any differences between the mother boards of the HP ENVY 17-J184na and the HP ENVY 17-J185na(touch smart) so would the touch smart screen work on my laptop?

I just have to rant, this is by far the worst machine I've had so far, ever. My gripes are:

    -Windows 8.1 is horrible
-What good does a long battery life do me when the laptop powers itself up in the middle of the night on hibernate and stays on until the battery is dead
-Why does this idiot machine always power up with a black screen and seems like it is updating, when the setting is to download and not install until I tell it to
-It is way quieter than the DV6T I had, but so what, these issues are unbearable

You've lost my faith HP, this computer sucks horribly

    I also am extremely dissatisfied.
    first HP computer.
    also last.
Windows 8.1 is horrid. thats not HP's fault.
but HP's customer service regarding my brand new notebook was horrid.
the keyboard flex is terrible. the salesman told me that reports of such, were not true.
if I knew then, what I know now........

After lots of searching, and wasting 2 hours w/ HP support uninstalling a bunch of my programs, I found the solution to my laptop turning itself on and not staying in hibernate. If you also have this issue:

    Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections
Right click your Wifi adapter, properties, Advanced Tab, turn off Wake On Magic Packet and Wake On Pattern Match

    I wish I knew how.
I wouldn't know where to begin.

would someone please me advise me on how hard it would be for me to add 8 Gb of RAM to my HP notebook?
I have 8 Gb now on 1 stick. so I have an empty slot.
the computer info says that its a Samsung 1600 MHz
my notebook model is: Envy 15T j100 Quad

    here are some specs:
    • Windows 8.1 64
    • 4th generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4700MQ Processor
    • Intel(R) HD Graphics
    • 15.6-inch diagonal HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1366x768)
    • 8GB DDR3 System Memory (1 Dimm)
    • 1TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
I installed a 256 Gb SS auxiliary drive.

    its easy as 1 2 3 ...
    1) remove battery
    2) remove 1 screw
    3) remove black plastic plate
    4) attach one extra RAM module in corresponding slot
PS: you could use same RAM model or at least check for same timings ...
PPS: you can use CPU-Z to check timings for existing module

    thank you very much.
would you possibly know if I definitely have another slot for another RAM module?
the salesman told me me I did when I bought it directly from HP, 1 year ago.
but I followed the instructions on HP's website to check my RAM.
I pressed F10, when booting up.
and it only showed my one 8 Gb Ram stick.
it did not show another empty slot.

    I did the cpu-z thing:
    General Frequency
    NB Frequency: 3395.6 MHz

    Timings
    DRAM Frequency: 799.0 MHz

CPU-Z shows how many modules installed you have at this moment
My thoughts - if you have 8GB RAM, then most probably its 2x4GB modules instead of just one 8GB module.
Two modules doubles memory bandwidth - that's why all manufacturers install them in pair

    look at the image bellow:

I remember for sure, the HP salesman telling me that he would give me one 8 GB RAM module, so that would leave room for me to get another one someday.
just wondered why a blank slot did not show up when I checked my system by pressing F10 on start up.
would you tell me please, do you know will there be any special configuring or programming I'll have to do, after I install another 8 GB Ram module?
    I mean, like anything?
or will the system do that by itself, with no need for me to know or do anything more than just install the RAM?

I think you have to do nothing after installing the RAM module.
Installing two modules doubles the bandwidth, but the memory performance will increase of only about 10% or a little more: various tests done during the years can confirm this.
"Doubling RAM modules will be slightly faster in benchmarks because the motherboard has to relax timings slightly to handle two DIMMs per channel but in real world use you'll never notice a difference."

You don't need any extra configuration, may be just one extra reboot
Extra module will double memory bandwidth, but not performance itself.
    performance depends on several factors:
    1) algorithm type
    2) amount of data (significant change if data can lay in cache L1 or L2 or at least L3 cache, if data large than L3 - it cause intensive use of RAM)
    3) data access pattern (random or sequential, sequential is faster than random when data not cached in CPU)

All these factors give us performance difference from 0 to 100% depends on code executing ... but average performance increase will be within 5...15%.

In addition to this 5...15% - your system will work more smooth and faster just because of more RAM (extra cache, less memory swap operations)

the reason I was thinking about installing the extra 8 GB of RAM is because I was going to get a program that I had heard would need it.
it's a drum program (for using together with an electronic drum set).
    this is it:

    FXpansion - BFD3

it is a 38 GB download, which de-compresses to 55 GB with a full installation.

I would stick as much RAM in there as you can, at 16 GB, I'm seen issues w/ Win 8.1 where it has said it is out of RAM that I've never seen on Win7

Absolutely agree, installing more ram will make your system faster and responsive.
Unfortunately you cant install more than 16GB RAM as there only 2 slots for memory (in 15 inch model, not sure about 17 inch models). According intel specs this processors can handle up to 32 GB (2 channel 2 modules per channel * 8GB per module)

I find that NewEgg.com has a pretty easy memory finder to use.

Has anyone gotten the finger print reader working for browsers? It only works on login for me.

I am no whiz when it comes to this stuff.
but when I got my HP, nearly a year ago, it was so fouled up between windows 8.1 madness, and whatever else, that I soon quit using that feature. (1 less thing that could go wrong with it.)

you can use this search result: sodimm pc3 12800

Look at 8GB modules or 16GB kit
Voltage 1.35V and CAS latency 11 or less (less = better)

I am unsure if this notebook can handle faster memory than PC3-12800

I'd suggest this one kit for you:

    http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Venge...d=1419800612&sr=1-6&keywords=sodimm+pc3+12800

or another (cheaper one but CL=11)
    http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-PC3-1...d=1419800119&sr=1-4&keywords=sodimm+pc3+12800

PS: The better place where you can get RAM depends on the country you're from. Amazon, Newegg - very good if you're from USA

It all depends on the processor, which one are you looking at? They'll go as fast as 2133 on Haswell if they're available

I would want to get the best one.
(keeping in mind that I have one 8 GB RAM module installed. I need to get one more 8 GB RAM module. I'm saying this because one those links does not show an option for getting just one....you have to buy two.)

here some specs for my notebook. if you need any more info, just tell me, (and please how to find it)?

the 8 GB RAM module I have is a Samsung 1600 MHz.

If you already have a DIMM installed, you will need to get another w/ matching speeds and timings, even brand for safety sake. CPUz is what you'll need to use. Use Newegg just to find the model and search for it in your native market. Newegg has a handy way of filtering out on the left hand side by module size and single or double stick.

    thank you.
    I'll run CPUz now.
would you please tell me what speeds and timings I need to get from running it?
and does it get the numbers automatically, or do I have to run certain tests with it?

checking newegg. they do not have Samsung.

It should pull it automatically, and I don't think you'll have anything faster than DDR3-1600's in there, to go any faster, you'll need to buy 2 DIMMs. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but simply adding a 2nd stick will get your processor operating in dual channel RAM mode, so you free up a little bottle neck in the processor from just running one stick. If you really want performance, an SSD is where you'll pick up all the gains.

all ears to any advice here guys. thank you.
by the way, my cpu is a 4th generation i7.

I would love to replace the HD with as SSD. I don't know how to though.

searching at newegg, using there indeed handy filtering, I have it narrowed down to 55, assuming I've done it right so far.
I don't know what my voltage is. does anyone know how/if I can find that out?

I just found this at Amazon. does this look like a good choice?:
