I'm going to evaluate its durability with an intensive, critical eye as I'm studying overseas for two years starting in the fall; any issue that would require service would be a very unwelcome distraction. However, so far, I am enamored. This is a very solid and beautiful unit, so much better than the first generation netbook I used for undergrad.
Happily, I feel it's reasonably portable considering the power and screen size so I think I can immediately rule out returning this for the Envy 15.

I ran another benchmark today. 3DMark Vantage.
AMD Radeon HD 7850M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor,Hewlett-Packard 1853 score: P10509 3DMarks
P10509
So far, the 7850m consistently scores slightly below a 660m and substantially higher than the 650m at stock settings. -
What's the driver version on that? I think 12.6 beta supports the 7850m.
-
Ill do a benchmark when mine arrives. I got a 3720 instead for a CPU. And someone with a 3820 should chime in with the same benchmark. Cause don't forget the CPU helps to. Whether its a bottle neck or not

Are desktop and mobile drivers the same for AMD? I've been using Nvidia for too long.
-
It depends. Some betas include the mobile drivers too.

So I think I may have run into a problem with the recovery install. I tried both the regular factory install and the minimal install from the recovery disks. The problem is that when I go into the recovery menu, I'm no longer able to select a restore option. They're still there, but they're greyed out. Only system restore is available now.
Anyone know what happened?
Both times the system said it created a recovery partition with all the files need to do the recovery again. I see the recovery partition on my HDD, but clearly it's not working.
The computer runs just fine, I just want to make sure if I have to do the install again, I won't have to use the disks. -
I did a minimal system recovery and installed a few programs. So far so good. I am appreciating this computer more with each passing minute.
Anyways, here are my benchmark results.

Mav I think in the HP Envy Manual posted on page 1 of the thread it states that you're only able to create a single set of recovery media, either USB flash or DVDs. 90% sure. This does suck major but I think you can order another set directly from HP
-
If you don't mind me asking, when did you order yours and when was your estimated ship date? Thanks! -
Yea, it tells you when you make the media that you can only do it once. I'm not sure that it's a problem with the disks. I did both a factory restore and the minimal restore using the disks. The computer works just fine, it's just the recovery options are not available in the bootup menu. Maybe it's related to the disks, but it might be user error. I just want to see if any knows how the recovery partition "should" work on a new drive.

the $50 credit i realized is not hard to get, just pretend to be mad, in my case i actually was pretty annoyed i just staight out said: "I want to speak to ur supervisor" and shes like sorry blah blah can i get ur info blah blah. and right after that she said i can offer u $50 for that. and im like ok.
so i got that 50$ back,
then I atempted to use the 15% off coupon on the sexy beats headphones. turns out u cant use it on third party. but i think she wanted to get rid of me so what she did was just give me that credit.
according to her, when my laptop ships I should get a 50$ credit for that order. and when my headphones ship i should get a 27$ credit on that.
in the end, i went from 1505 to 1455 (50$ off), then to 1646$ (191 for headphones) to 1619$ (27$ off). So techinically overall im paying 119 for a tricked out laptop + some sexy headphones since university covers 1.5k. gotta make sure rents pay for that extra 119 haha.
everyone else since ur actually paying with ur money I would recommend calling them up cause its easy to get that credit. the number is in that chat log above. Have fun!
P.S. bug them about shipping one of the reps told me that ur shipping gets upgraded to 2 day, next day etc. so make sure they agree to taht also but do that after the 50$ credit talk cause the rep wanted to back out of it when i asked for that
P.P.S. the number is 1-866-217-6014 -
June 4 and June 13.
-
Ahh I see, head scratcher! Well atleast everythings working ok, hope you get a solution though asap
-
Thanks. It's not an issue unless I lose the recovery disks and need to do another install. I'm probably going to burn a second copy of the disks just in case. Unless HP was sneaky and put some kind of copy protection into the images.
-
What would the best way to move my 90GB of music from my old laptop to my new one? I do not have a big usb drive to add it to.
-
Google Drive my friend, cloud is the future and google is awesome. well i forgot you have friggin 90GB, only 5 gb is free :/ for 5$ u can get 100GB cloud space.. then you can cancel, prolly the most efficient way to do it.
There're also ways to connect two laptops... -
Share the drive and on your old laptop, mount it on the new drive and copy the files. Google's your friend.
-
Let us know what you find out. Might need to clone the drive or recovery partition prior to making the disks just in case?
-
Throw that HDD into the second bay. Or buy a SATA to USB adapter. The former being the easiest thing to do
-
Remove the HDD from my old drive and put it in the 2nd bay?
-
Does anyone know how to enable manual graphics switching on the Envy 17? I can't seem to find the option in the AMD software and in the BIOS.
-
Lucky you. I ordered on the same date, and had the same expected ship date. Not only do I not have my Envy, but (supposedly) it hasn't shipped yet.
If you are wondering, I chose 2 options, the 750GB Hybrid Drive, and 16 GB of Memory. From what I've noticed on here, others have ordered similar configs without delay. Gotta wonder how they process their orders.
Also - I called HP earlier today, and they didnt want to give me anything, other than a promise of getting back to me with an update - which they have not as of yet. I'm going to try the number posted earlier, and see if I get someone who speaks english.
I'm really not very upset, unless I find out that I'm in for a big delay. -
Take it out of your old laptop and put it into the second bay of the new envy.
Google is a nice idea, but unless you're Zues it'd take days to upload that much data. A better networking option would be to put both notebooks on the same network and enable filesharing. Then reach across via Ethernet and copy the files to the new computer - i've done that multiple times with .iso files or sharing movies with a friend and it works out great. -
I canceled my custom order since it got delayed till the 27th. After much holding and escalating, I finally managed to convince them to give me a ready to ship model for roughly the same price. Changed order today and it gets here tomorrow.

Question please : I have an old Toshiba laptop (about 6 years old). Would the hard drive fit in the 2nd Envy bay ? If so - would it slow down the new Envy in any way ? I realize the 2nd drive wont get faster, but I dont want to hurt the speed of the new Envy.
The old laptop runs Windows XP, and the drive model is HTS541080G9AT00, which appears to be an Hitachi 80GB Hard Drive.
Sorry for the questions - Im a newbie at opening a laptop. All suggestions to move the data as easily as possible are much appreciated. Thanks ! -
Quick overclocking run on 3DMark 11. I'd push it more but I haven't been able to find anything that gives the temps for the 7850M yet.
By spartanjet at 2012-06-14
Clocks are 850/1125. I bet I could push the memory a bit higher but I don't have a lot of time to play tonight. -
What does OC'ing do exactly for people? I mean what is the benefit compared to the cons?
-
Makes it faster, makes it hotter and prone to stability issues.
-
Was aware of this but the impact of making it faster for certain tasks.. such as how noticeable is the heat increase and performance increase?
-
From my experience, they usually ship a few days before their expected ship date. Like mine, it originally said ship on 06/14 and it actually shipped out on 06/11 and got it on the 13th with 2 day business shipping. I'm guessing they prioritized for 2 day business shipping? :confused if not could be delays on some of the parts?
-
I don't see any 32XX ready-to-ship models on their website, are you sure you won't be opening a Sandy Bridge laptop tomorrow?
EDIT: nevermind, I see them now. -
One last try, in my quest for 3k on 3DMark 11: 875/1225
By spartanjet at 2012-06-14 -
MsiAfterburner??? Someone yesterday was having a bit of a problem.
-
That drive has an IDE interface. So your options are now network sharing or usb to ide adapter. The envy uses SATA
-
Anyone try upgrading from an old PC to a new one by just swapping disk images and removing/restoring drivers/custom OEM software?
I've got a 1.5 year old Sandy Bridge Envy 17 and I'm going to try avoiding the misery of re-installing all my apps and data by getting the old hard drive (via image) to work on this new Ivy Bridge version... I'm optimistic... (not that it won't be without trouble, but less than re-installing all my apps and data).
Anyone try something like this? -
Okay so this is confusing...
Even after Windows 7, the driver upgrading process for the GPU is still weird.
I tried following the directions on a forum post here that talks about how to install drivers, but the directions aren't working to well for me.
The latest driver that I have according to "Device Manager" for the 7850M is:
Driver Date: 3/26/2012
Driver Version: 8.951.9.1000
I went to AMD's website directly to download the drivers but...
It seems that I can't specifically look for drivers that are for the 7XXX series. I tried to use the auto-detect software but when it runs, it says that its unable to determine what I have; thus, I cannot download anything.
I just got my system in about an hour ago! Totally thrilled to begin gaming on it. -
AMD doesn't have any drivers that officially support the 77xx-78xxm series. You can try the 12.6 Beta drivers from guru3d.com.
-
Nice benchmark with the overclocked 7850m. When you're pushing it that hard, what are the temps of the CPU and GPU? And does it physically feel hot on the machine? Is it noticably louder with the fans kicking on full blast?
How many more FPS are we talking about in a game like Battlefield 3 at high or ultra settings?
Thanks. -
have you tried:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx#1
EDIT: fixed the link -
Also, doesn't the card overclock itself within TDP with "powertune"?
-
Pretty sure it's just the Kepler cards that overclock themselves.
-
yeah powertune is underclocking it to save power lol. but nice scores guy above
-
nice score man u surpassed the 7870m and desktop 7750
getting close to the desktop 7770 (1000/1000) i believe
good luck!
nearing 670m -
LOL thanks I think I pushed it enough since there seem to be no working temp monitors for this 7850M yet (tried GPU-Z, Open Hardware Monitor, HWMonitor, and Afterburner)
I have discovered a show stopping issue for me though. It appears as if the Envy 17 3D does not support graphic switching at all. I could be wrong but there is no option to switch graphics (like the old envy 17 3d 2xxx), on battery the 7850M is still the active graphic card, and in device manager under display there is only the 7850M (the old Envy 17 3d 2xxx showed both the ATI and Intel under display). Could someone with a regular Envy 17 tell me what they see under display in the device manager or show me where the dialog is to switch graphics in Catalyst it would be greatly appreciated.
It wouldn't be a big deal but without any type of switching battery life is bad (really bad < 2H bad). This wont work for me unfortunately if my suspicions turn out to be true. Plus the 300GB SSD isn't even a SATA III which is kind of sad at this point. -
i highly doubt HP disabled it it gotta be there somewhere haha. but alright i wanna c where i can push my 7750m. hopefully to 660m levels. I think u should try to get 900 on the core then ull have 670m in the bag
-
You would be surprised. Alienware 3D systems don't have graphic switching due to the 120Hz screen which might have happened with the new Envy 3D. There is no trace of Intels display drivers on my system Ive searched hard. I just want to verify if any non 3D envy users can check their device manager under displays and let me know if they see both the Intel and AMD or just AMD.
-
I have the 3D Envy and I can't seem to be able to switch to the Intel HD 4000 graphics either.
-
You're talking about the hybrid hard drive, right?
Not that I'd have to ask, but if anyone else that ordered a hybrid drive has issues, be sure to let us know.
I would shut down and turn on the laptop a half dozen times. It could be slow because the hybrid drive needs to learn what to store in the SSD. Until it does that, I guess it could just be slower than a normal hard drive for whatever reason.
