That's why i just got the hp preferred account. They gave me a 4k limit. 12 months no interest no payments. Its worked out great for me so far. I decided to try a different configuration of my dv7( get more and save myself 100 bucks) and then today after the benchmarks of the envy , I decided to order an envy instead . Since they wont let you cancel an order . I guess i will return this dv7 on monday and the next dv7 will arrive sometime next week and ill just keep that until the envy arrives. .. Anyone know if the envy has Dual band Wifi?
-
-
it does i forgot the exact specs tho
-
actually they WILL (try anyway) depending how far along in the process the order has gotten. I ordered on Sunday noon and cancelled/reordered Sunday evening... I got cancellation confirmation today.
-
It should, since the Wifi card in it is 2x2.
-
I think your order was probably still being processed. I dont think they allow cancellations once the order has been sent out for production.
Seems like a great idea in retrospect but you know what they say, "hindsight is always 20/20" I also ordered the dv7 first as well, I actually had it in hand but sent it back and thats where this whole fiasco began. Right now just hoping that this order processes correctly or i'll just be saving up for the new MBP+Retina. -
Just for reference this is what a GT650m can do when it is clocked at 970/3000:
Average temp of about 70 degrees C but MSI Afterburner won't let me OC any further or change voltage. Hopefully a driver update will fix this. This pretty much shows that the 660m and the 650m are pretty much the same exact card. We'll see how the 7850m fares in OC'ing. I have the DV6 btw. Internal temps are great but surface temps a bit warm but do not bother me one bit. -
apparently there is alot of headroom for the 7750m to OC so i would expect the same from 7850m
-
My heart just missed a beat! Me too, I ordered the 750 thingy.
Is anyone else experiencing the same slowness and boot failure? -
OK. Here are some pics. I'm still burning my recovery DVD's. After that I will video how to install an SSD on this thing.

Keyboard Backlight
Thickness
I took a picture of the keyboards to hopefully capture some key differences in how HP implemented each keyboard back light. On the DV7 there is noticeably more back light showing around the keys.
On the Envy 17, there's a lot less light showing around the keys. Instead the letters and symbols themselves are lit up a lot brighter than the DV7.
Personally, I prefer the Envy 17 setup.
Size wise, the DV7 is a hair thinner and a a little lighter. It is a bit deeper in depth from front to back.

Hey Maverick777 you're not helping with my wait haha, btw awesome quality on the pics I wonder what camera you're using? Also keep the info coming, this is all I have to tide me over until HP decides to give me my Envy lol
-
Great pics.
How are the temps? And noise level?
Do you notice any reds looking orange with the screen? (I know this is supposed to be a problem only for the 15" IPS screens) -
is it me or are the keys shrunk into the body in the envy? (from looking at maverick's pics )
-
They are... About as much as a mbp.
Sent from my SGH-i917 Windows Phone using Board Express -
I'm using a Nikon D80 with a Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 lens.
Still too early to judge temperatures. I ran the benchmarks and I'm finishing burning the recovery disks. So far it only gets a little warm, not hot.
No color issues. Went to Netflix and the red is definitely red. I think the color issue was limited to the 15" screens.
The keys are sunk into the body. The red trim is actually is actually an accent to the edge "sunken in" part of laptop.
This might be a better pic. It's a hard edge instead of a smooth curve like on the MacBook Pros.
-
oh no ik that but ur first pic made it seem like the keys were flush with the metal
btw thats a real nice cam -
Mav77 nice pics! you got the pics covered very well, so not going to post anymore. Did you use a tripod?
those are nice really sharp photos. OT: thinking of getting a 17-55 how do you like the Tamron? Nikon version is too $$.
I just opened my Envy 17, creating the recovery discs as well. Will be waiting for your video! -
Mav, since you have both the Envy 17 and the DV7 what are your thoughts on the screen quality when comparing the two?
-
Thanks! No, I took these all handheld. The Tamron is mostly good. It doesn't focus as fast as the Nikon 17-55 but then again, it costs 60% less and weighs a lot less too. Image quality is almost the same assuming you don't need the faster focus speed to capture what you want.
-
I'm going to do a comparison after I finish installing the recovery image to the Envy 17.
I am not going to be doing a video of the SSD installation. I can't improve on this video so I'm not going to try.
**************MAKE the recovery disks prior to doing anything! (5 disks for single layer, 3 disks for dual layer required) *************
You make them by hitting the start menu and entering "recovery" into the search box. You'll see an option for "HP Recovery Media Creation"
Add a 2nd Hard Drive to a HP Envy 17 -3000 series laptop (3xxx) - YouTube
The process is exactly the same except I replaced the primary drive with my SSD and move the installed drive over to the 2nd bay.
Also, HP already includes the SATA cable (it's already hooked up and connector is taped inside the bay) so you only need the caddy. It comes altogether when you buy it, but just a heads up that HP already did 50% of the installation for you.
As for installing Windows on the SSD, you need to follow the following steps after installing the SSD.
1. Once you have the SSD installed and the laptop powered on, you will get a "no bootable device found, insert book disk and press any key to continue"
2. Insert your recovery disk 1
3. press a key
4. Once the GUI loads, choose "System Recovery"
a. This will create the recovery partition on the SSD and install windows. That way if you need to/want to do a recovery again at a future date, you won't need the disks.
5. Once it is done doing it's thing (it will take awhile since there's 5 disks!), you have the option to use the computer as is with all the factory bloat or do the minimal install.
6. Assuming you want to do the minimal install, reboot your computer and hit ESC to enter the boot up menu.
7. Select system restore
8. Once the GUI loads, pick "minimal restore" this time
9. Wait for it to finish
10. Congratulations you've created the recovery partition AND reinstalled Windows without all the bloatware. You may now proceed to use the laptop.
-
do u know if its possible to do the recovery disks on external hdd or usb drive? -
Hey Mav, what about the keyboard flex?
-
You can use a USB flash drive with at least 20gb of free space.
When you open the program, it will automatically scan for appropriate media before it proceeds.
When I inserted my DVD it allowed me to continue. I just tried connecting my external HDD on my DV7T and it does not allow me to continue. I can only assume it really does mean thumb drives and not external HDDs. -
aww now where can i find a 20 gb flashdrive haha, u need exactly 20? 16 gb wont work??
-
The hybrid drive is the latest momentus xt, right?
-
Regular I'm afraid. It's this guy:
Newegg.com - Seagate Momentus ST9750420AS 750GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive -
What the h...... it says nothing about being a hybrid drive -_-

God the suspense is killing me, it finally departed Alaska, spose to be here friday.

Departed FedEx location
ANCHORAGE, AK
I Configured an Envy 17-3200 3D with these specs: i7-3720QM|6GB 1600MHz RAM|1TB 5200RPM HDD|1GB AMD 7850m
With 2x4GB Crucial Vengeance sticks waiting at home (1600MHz 9x9x9x24)
and a SanDisk Extreme SATA 6Gb/s 480GB SSD i got during the amazon sale for $379.99. You can bet that'll be drive 1, and drive 2 well be the 1tb secondary for space/storage. -
Oops, sorry. That's the one off my DV7. I'll have to wait until my Envy is done with it's restore to run HWInfo again.
-
I am one of the people who had my order delayed so I thought I would pass this along. I called hp today in the morning and the rep said my order shipped. About 3 hours later I get an email saying delayed from the 12th to the 20th. I called hp back and said I was going to cancel if they did not offer me a discount and they gave me a $50 refund. So for those not getting anything for the delay you may just need to say you will cancel and it might net you $50.
-
THANK GOD!...
-
Do any of you guys know whether or not it's possible to install an mssd on our own on this rig? Or will we somehow void warranty? Also guys I'm pretty sure this is the latest XT. I have the same one in my PC now exact same description.
-
Thank you. I ordered on 6/4 - said it would ship on 6/13, and it still says "in production". I'm not thrilled, but I hope it's not a week delay. I will give HP a call tomorrow, and see what they have to say.
-
hopefully you get yours soon!
-
mav777, question. do you calibrate you screen? i find the screen is cooler than on dv7t which i cal'd using spyder.
i think i kind of like the keyboard on the dv7t better and the touchpad i find a little bit touchy, not as responsive as the one on the Dv7t. oh well, maybe just need getting to used to. -
Ya, anyone know where the msata thing on the computer is. BC there is an option to have a 80gb msata drive put in.
-
This should explain how to find it and install one: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03317166.pdf

ok, thanks

How much flash memory is in the hybrid drive?
-
8GB Flash. The first gen hybrid was 500GB w/ 4GB flash.
-
Good. When I first heard of the Momentum XT's, they were only 4gb of flash NAND.
I found this review (with video) that goes really into detail on the hybrid drive. Pretty cool. -
Well it is officially my estimated ship date and still no tracking number. I know its just an "estimated ship date" but I think the frustrating part is they have ready to ship 3rd gen Envy 17s with the identical specs as the one I ordered yet they still haven't shipped mine. I guess I'm feeling kind of bummed out. Thanks HP
-
I hear you. Mine was supposed to ship yesterday. Still shows "in production". I hope it wont be a long delay.
-
Mine was in the exact same position as yours. Mine is heading towards New England though. Unfortunately, FedEx has not shown any update since 2:31am, and it says my package has not left Newark NJ yet towards my local distribution center! Argh. Estimated delivery is still 6/14 (today), but it's already past noon and the boxes haven't left NJ yet??
In the grand scheme of things, waiting one more day is not going to make much difference, but I am really looking forward to playing with the new toy tonight. -

My Envy is getting closer. I am looking forward to comparing screen quality to my MacBookPro i7 2.8GHz Sandy Bridge. Ive had the MBP for 2 months and im looking to get rid of it. The touch pad gesturing and screen quality is great but thats about it. I'm going back to PC.... -
Anyone know what is faster? Would it be the 128 GB msata (in the triple drive option) or a Crucial M4 SSD I'll mount in place of one of the hard drives?
I am going to reinstall the OS once I get my Envy and not sure where I should put the OS (it'll be encrypted with TrueCrypt, which obviously has its own performance impact). -
Oh, and I feel everyone's pain. I ordered my Envy on June 3rd, when they first became available, and my ship date of 6/12 is now 6/20! They screwed me the same way with my Clarksdale Envy 17...
-
I was wondering the same thing as it would be hugely beneficial to use an mssd as a system drive and a dual mechanical drive setup for files. Alas I do believe that mssd are slower than SSD's by far. Every mssd i've checked out tops out at almost half the speed of the newest SSD's available today. Not sure if thats a port speed limitation or the mssd itself but the former seems more likely since this is the same NAND we put in SATA III
