Just be happy it's on the way, what you should've done was called customer support and gotten a free upgrade to two day shipping. I haven't been waiting since the 4th, I'd say the 9th, but they did it for me because of what either amounts to some huge amount Lof system error at HP or sheer gross over incompetence with some of their staff. I'm still excited however and can't wait for my Envy to arrive!

I tried with several reps on several occasions and each insisted that it was totally and completely impossible to alter the shipping method once the unit is in production... given that we're talking about HP customer service that might have been a complete lie, but that's what they kept insisting. Ah well... I did get $50 back.

Well, to do it for real you need a hardware device, like the Pantone Huey Pro I have, or one of the Spyder products. It tests the actual colors on your actual monitor/display and helps you adjust them. But... you can also just import the color profile file that someone else with an identical screen made with such a tool. I don't have my Envy yet or I'd send you that color profile. Mine will arrive next week or so and it might take me a few days to get the sytem up with all my software/etc.

But, once all that happens I'd be happy to share the color profile with any/everyone.

I still haven't finished downloading all the software I'll be using yet, but I was anxious to test out the graphics and sound, so I tried playing a game that essentially crushed my 3 year old gateway laptop and reduced it to a black buzzing crash after 5 minutes of gameplay, Warhammer Online: Wrath of heroes. It's not the most demanding of games, nor very complicated, but it put my Nvidia 9800 GTS through hell and neither the dual inboard fans nor my Cooler Master u3 laptop cooler could keep it calm enough.

With settings on high, it looked great with a pretty high fps and vivid colors. The sound was kind of insane. I know this has beats audio and the speakers would be better than my old laptop, but it was much better than I'd anticipated. However, when I turned off the game, and the sound was off, I suddenly heard the fans spin like a turbine. I don't really feel much air coming out, but I could sure hear it. The fans are still on 5 minutes later, but they're essentially silent. I was pretty caught off guard by how intense the fans got. Anyone else hear more fan noise than expected when stressing the machine?

Additionally, my right hand keeps slipping onto the trackpad when I'm typing due to positioning and proximity of the trackpad to the keyboard. It' easily remedied by turning off the trackpad with the convenient double-tap on/off button on the trackpad, but this too was unexpected.

You can't switch it to fixed graphics in the BIOS like the Sandy Bridge laptops anymore. Right click and select switchable graphics and assign the graphics you want for specific applications. Pity they took away the function in the BIOS that was once in the Sandy Bridge Envy laptops.

    Hi Ben,

Same thing for me too. I asked for a 2 day shipping upgrade a few times, and was told they could not alter the order. I ordered on the 4th, and my order is still in limbo. The whole mess is mind boggling.

Envy 17-3200t Non-3D. I believe the 3D version's issue is that it stays fixed at the Radeon HD 7850M graphics. All other Ivy Bridge Envy laptops have switchable graphics, but it can't be configured in the BIOS anymore.

The previous generation had the option in the BIOS to switch between fixed or dynamic graphics. For fixed graphics, when power is plugged in, the graphics will switch to the ATI graphics; when you unplug your power, you'l be prompted to switch to the Intel graphics. For dynamic, you can assign which applications you want to run on ATI or Intel graphics, regardless whether your power is plugged in or not. If it's not assigned, the computer will automatically determine what's best for you (most of the time it'll select Intel graphics).

The current Ivy Bridge Envy laptops run on the dynamic configuration.

I'm happy for all of you that finally received your Envy. Mine is overdue and now that so many orders have arrived I was wondering how many other people out there still have orders that were due to ship but have not?

    Hi Mraufait -

I ordered on the 4th. Was originally scheduled to ship on the 13th. I've heard my Envy is supposed to ship anywhere from the 20th - 26th, with each phone call saying something different.

Frankly, I do not believe any of it at this point, and wonder if a bunch of orders placed on the 3rd and 4th have been lost. Seems impossible for a computer company... but after all the excuses I've heard - it wouldnt surprise me at this point.

Does anyone have some information on the two wireless cards that are available when configuring the Envy 17t-3200? I was hoping to find out if they are the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 or 6235, or even the Ultimate-N 6300.

I don't play games, but I am not having any problems... I chose arbitrary values 800/1100.
    edit MSIAfterburner.cfg:

    [ATIADLHAL]
UnofficialOverclockingEULA = I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it
    UnofficialOverclockingMode = 1

set app to "High Performance" ... WinAmp visualization in my case

    reboot just for good measures...

    Start App
    Start MSIAfterburner
    Set; Apply; Save 1

0's mean it is seeing the Intel 4000 ... which it can't control...
(People with the 3D version shouldn't have this issue....)

My other computer is a dvt7-6000... Switchable Graphics was either Intel or Radeon... not application specific. The entire screen would blink when changing between the two. On the Envy it seems completely transparent... obviously a more(?) elegant implementation.

Seems like a lot of, if not most, guys on the 15 forum are having trouble ejecting discs from their ODD. Can current 17 owners see if theirs do the same thing and let us know?

Open up a high performance app before afterburner. I open up 3dmark 11 then afterburner, change the OC settings, close 3dmark, then finally open up what ever game I'm going to play.

i was able to figure it out yesterday. it is seeing intell hd 4000. so what u gotta do is right click on desktop, go to "configure switchable graphics" go to browse and find where afterburner is installed. Then click the button until it says high performance next to it.

now whenever u use afterburner it will use the dgpu :p

For the life of me I still can't figure out what is missing to get this working.

    Switchable Graphics Setting
    [IMG]

    Unofficial OC enabled
    [IMG]

Afterburner Settings (Kernal mode did not make a difference)

    No dice
    [IMG]

Catalyst 12.6 beta driver installed (driver version 9.0.0.0)

    Profile set to maximum performance.

When I run Kombustor it properly uses the 7850m instead of the 4000.

For me setting it to high performance isn't enough. I have to open another 3d app for it to work properly. Did you try that? First open another app, then open Afterburner.

Here's Afterburner running AFTER I ran Super Meat Boy. You can see it's detecting the proper 7850m clock speeds on the right. I just can't set anything on the left. Still reads 0/0.

It the the APPLICATION in which you want to OC, that needs to be set to High Performance and started FIRST... Not MSIAfterburner itself... For my WinAmp example, you NEED to startup WinAmp and THEN the visualization BEFORE the 7850 takes control (merely starting WinAmp was NOT enough... I needed to actually start up the visualization). You can then start MSIAfterburner and it should work.

So you set Super Meat Bros to High Performance and rebooted( just for grins). Then you started SMB up again, followed by bringing up MSIAfterburner... and it still reported 0's for core and memory clocks... hmmm. Here is a thought, you could try MY WinAmp exercise... because "I" know that works for "ME" and I expect you too. I believe this is a DirectX senerio... Is it possible that SMB is OpenGL and maybe THAT is part of the equation??? ... just a guess...

Ok well I got mine yesterday but had to go to work and didn't get home until late.. Then ended up going out drinking with some buddies and this morning ran a 5K then had other company functions so now I'm finally able to sit down with the Envy. I was able to make recovery discs but and watch the 3D Madagascar trailer that is installed; the 3D is damn good. I like the trackpad but the mouse buttons are a little too stiff for me (I usually just tap the trackpad middle to click anyways so not a big deal). Nothing was bent or scratched or anything... laptop was damn flawless when I opened it so Kudos to HP for delivering a good one to me. The color scheme is actually really really nice also. I haven't been able to run battery life yet so I am thinking about doing that while I transfer my music in a little bit. No flex on the keyboard, I really like the keyboard too (back-lit keys are really nice). I have 4 Toshibas in the house plus an Asus to compare to, and I will say beats these laptops easily. The beats audio doesn't provide much bass which I was disappointed but the sound is nice a crisp (I'll know more after I transfer my 10K+ songs today). The hybrid drive is quick I might add, booted up quickly which surprised me. I think I might add an SSD if there is a special on the 120GB ones that I'll only install to have games on there.

Anything else you guys want to know just let me know.

EDIT: Oh and if anyone can recommend me a cooling mat and a surge protector please do!!

I did NONE of that. I am not convinced that is necessary... but maybe didn't hurt anything... or something specific to your gaming situation.

(Are others having funny arrow key action when trying to edit posts on this forum only... sometimes things work fine and other times, they seem to be ignored. Explorer is also complaining about "cross site scripting monkey business"... a couple of days ago, Avast started flagging this site as Malware infected... Norton seems to allow it?!?)

so it sounds like there are several new envy 15s that have a problem with their optical drives. discs won't eject properly.

anybody see that on their new envy 17s?

I've been told my Envy would ship on the 13th, 20th, 25th, and 26th. The first 2 dates are long gone, and I have huge doubts on the other 2 dates. We'll see what happens, but I suggest keeping your expectations to a bare minimum !!!

Mine wouldn't let go of disc 4 when I created my restore discs until I stood the laptop up on its side. It hasn't happened again, but I'll be keeping a close eye on it.
