below is nvidia's response to why it does not support switchable graphics with its 3d models. maybe it is something similar with amd?

    •Why can't I use Optimus technology with 3D Vision?
-One of the key aspects of NVIDIA's Optimus technology is that the LVDS display is routed directly to the IGP. This is due to the fact that Optimus always uses the IGP's display controller. When Optimus turns the dGPU is off (100% electrically off, 0W), the IGP is 100% on and enabled. Once Optimus enables the dGPU, every part of the IGP besides the display controller is either shut down or sent to the lowest power state. In each case, the IGP display controller is always used to send to the LCD.

With 3D Vision, the 120Hz 3D LCD needs to be attached directly to the GPU and cannot be routed through the IGP's display controller.

    sounds about right
so the 3D version intel HD 4000 does not exist really
with that cleared up lets see how we can increase the battery life on the 3D

can someone decrease the refresh rate and play with the settings see what we can achieve

It should include all the installed drivers that the Envy comes with, plus stuff like the hp quick-launch buttons. It'll be tedious because of the multiple .exe files and restarts, but it's all there.

That's insane! What was your config? Quick ship? I'd ordered two days before you and 6 days before that unsuccessfully as HP mucked up my order. I swear this is my first experience with HP and if I don't find that I am overly satisfied with this product once it arrives this will be my last!

I honestly dont know what on earth is going on. HP is having some serious problems with consistency in shipping these machines! There are even some folks here who have ordered since the 4th and still havent received theirs.

Well then how did HP do it with the Previous Generations of Envy 17 3D which had switchable graphics ??
And why should they take a step backward now..??

And whats with the upto 5.25hrs of battery life then..?

My Envy got to ABQ, NM about an hour ago. ABQ is about 180 miles from my house and I'm pretty sure it missed the truck to Farmington and since my area doesn't have Saturday delivery according to the Fed Ex website I'll probably have to wait till Monday to get my laptop. Bummer..

Mine still says in transit from Alaska, but I called this morning and they think it didn't make it on the plane to leave there. Was supposed to be delivered today. I'm all set with HP after this experience. Now I see why they were considering leaving the PC market... They suck at customer service.

    Yeah I said it!

And plenty of us ordered on the 3rd and 4th, and their orders are nowhere to be seen. I'm convinced the production facility has lost these orders, and the customer service folks have no clue how to handle the problem.

Way to go HP.... Way to go. :(

    Hi Jason -

I dont think so, as others who ordered the 750 hybrid drive after the 4th, have had their orders shippped. I'm convinced it's a huge screw-up at the factory. I'm wondering if our orders will ever ship without interraction from HP Management... but I have no clue how to reach anyone that can make a difference.

The whole experience has been a total mess. Shame on HP.

Current code due to expire 6/24. If HP holds to recent code offerings you should see a % off coupon on or before the 26th. Based on their rotation I would guess next up is 30% (just a guess).

Just got off the phone with HP/ Fedex and it appears my laptop was (once again) part of a larger shipment that needed to clear US customs, but did so after the flight from Alaska had already left yesterday. So instead of being delivered today, it should be leaving Alaska tonight and be delivered on Monday. Gotta say, this experience has DEFINITELY soured me on HP altogether. Not sure if I intend to keep this thing once it's delivered.

Different CPU / GPU. Here's an example, on the sandy bridge Envy you could not boot from the USB3 port ( only the USB2). In the Ivy bridge it only has USB3 ports & you can boot from them. Just because you can do something with one piece of hardware does not mean you can do it with another. I'm not saying this can't be overcome but after reading about the new switching technology on this GPU it looks to be the way it is for now.

Considering this laptop doesn't use Optimus it may still be possible. AMD is using a new technology to do the switchable graphics, may or may not be possible with a software/firmware update. Most likely it isn't though, this is the sort of thing that will at least be supported out of the box even if it didn't work quite right.

Exactly, AMD's New Enduro switching I believe was just released for production in late May so one would assume they will be working on the kinks extensively.

Mine just got here 5 minutes ago as well, but the box was heavily dented, and there was a hole in one side like it was dropped on the corner of something. I was so excited, and now I'm so worried I haven't even opened it yet. Here's hoping it'll still work!

Good afternoon everyone! I am a 2.5 years happy Envy 15 series (4830m) owner that has been lurking the last 7 months since the 3xxx series came out that like a lot of people was impatiently waiting for the Ivybridge and the "real" (not rebadged ad nausem) 7xxx series AMD cards to come out to the point that I actually placed my order for an Envy 17 non-3d on the 3rd while I was on my Honeymoon in Paris!

And then the shipment delays started and I called in and cancelled my order and got a quick ship instead which I have had for the last two days but have yet to be able to enjoy. Here is my issue, has anyone that has these machines had any problem getting the 7850m card to "engage"? I have 3dmark06 downloaded and it engages the card (and torches through at about 14,500) but when I try to tell it to run CIV V or Shogun 2 in the configurable graphics screen it tells me that it is set up but yet every time I actually go to play the game it hits the Intel 4000 integrated GPU instead of the 7850M. Is anybody else having this problem? I have both games loaded up through Steam is that possibly an issue with the Steam client? I briefly had an Envy 17-3000 before I sent it back waiting on these new chips to come out and that version had a BIOS selectiont that made perfect sense as I want discrete when I am plugged in, I want Integrated when I am not so why in the ten hells did they change such a simple an elegent solution to software crap is beyond me? Any suggestions would be most appreciated as I am DYING to actually get to try this 7850m on something other than a benchmark program!

Took a quick picture comparing brightness of the Envy to my big Dell desktop monitor.

The colors aren't accurate on my camera phone, so the pic was just meant as a comparison. The screen is really very bright, and even while highly reflective, the the brightness offsets much of the reflection. The red light at the top of the screen are not nearly as light as in the pic, and are very honestly unnoticeable when looking at the screen.

As far as initial impressions go, it feels quite solid. I'm going to have to get used to the trackpad, as I'm used to a bit more slickness, but it's responsive and looks well integrated. It's only been on for about 10 minutes, but I got an ad when coming here, and the sound from just that was surprisingly clear and loud...not usually a great thing for an ad, but welcome this time. I'm upgrading from a Gateway P-7805u FX, so everything seems like a clear upgrade.

So I received my Envy 17 Ivy Bridge today just like everyone else. Build quality in this unit is perfect all way round. However, the biggest problem with it is the screen. I compared the screen with my Envy 15 Sandy Bridge, and noticed that the color reproduction is way off. I'm aware that the Envy 15 SB has the red/orange issue, but aside from that, everything else on the Envy 17 IB looks more blueish/violetish. Not sure if those of you who received the latest Envy 17 have this issue, but here are some pictures of the default desktop wallpaper to compare:

Personally, I feel that the Envy 15 has better and more accurate color reproduction than the Envy 17 that I received (other than the red/orange issue). Should I call HP for a replacement unit for my Envy 17, or is it the same across all Envy 17s?

Your comparing your 17 3D to the 15, but whose to say that the 15" has better color reproduction? I think the screen and the colors and the vividness on the 17 3D is vastly better than the colors on the 15. Maybe thats just me though

I'll say the same. I haven't noticed any QC issues thus far. I'm about to start the 5th and final recovery disc, so then i'll start trying stuff out more. I haven't even connected to the internet yet, i wanted my discs to be as pure as possible.

    Quick Summary

    Audio
I'm not sure about most, but whenever i thought about Beats audio i thought of loud, high quality sound. Upon listening to the sample music included with Windows 7 - specifically Mr Scruff - i've noticed that loud music isn't necessarily better. The track was very clear, higher tones sounded quite crisp. Volume was certainly more full than the 4 year old G60 i'm upgrading from.

    Screen
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. The 1080 screen is a pleasure to the eyes and i find myself honestly straining less to read small print, though i'm not sure if that's as a result of the 120Hz refresh rate or not. Wide viewing angles mean that those of you that travel often will want to limit the amount of screen time sensitive material is shown, prying eyes from the passenger sitting next to you will see everything. Skeptics beware, the 3D feature is certainly not a gimic. Viewing the Wildlife in HD generic Windows 7 sample left much room for further impression. However, when the Madagascar 3 trailer was played that void was filled. Stunning colors and detail from the HD display, and 3D elements that literally came out of the screen and seemingly land onto your keyboard. If You went with the 3D option, you won't be disappointed.

Performance (See signature for specs) 750GB Hybrid Drive at 7,200rpm could pull more weight
The drive seems quite fast. Exceptionally actually. Bear in mind i am coming from a 5,400 250GB drive though. The notebook sings along as it arises from a cold boot in under 10 seconds from the POST (Though i'm sure this will get slower as i install more programs). A bit of a let down though, is that Windows Experience Index is being held back by the drives low score of 5.9, the next highest being Graphics at 7.3, Ram at 7.8, and the i7 processor bringing it home at 7.9. Surprisingly when i launched Intel Rapid Store Tech, the HDD is reported at 3Gb/s not the 6Gb/s we were expecting, especially from a SATA III interface. I will be opening the notebook up to verify i received the correct HDD. The speed and response feels correct with the 8Gb of NAND flash though.

--More to come as i put this notebook through it's paces. I have yet to get the i7-3820QM past a slow trot and into a full gallop.

I don't have an Envy 15 to compare with, so I picked up every smartphone, tablet, and notebook nearby, brought up http://johnsantic.com/photo/test_image.jpg to compare between each device, as it seemed like the most fair way to do it. Of all the devices, my Envy probably had the most accurate renderings of each color. My default background looks much closer to the one on your Envy 17, but other pages show the coloring just fine. Perhaps the background just has a different overall hue on the new version? Have you tried other pages?

Did try the Fn + B key combination to enable and disable Beats Audio..makes a lot of difference with the fullness of sound.

Congrats on receiving your unit..Enjoy it and do keep us posted.. :)

i tried it on my 15 also and yeah what a difference! Now im wondering whether the beats audio actually does something or the speakers are disabled when beats is turned off to make it seem that it actually does something.

I tried the test image you provided and I must say that the colors are more vibrant on the Envy 17, and the red is definitely more red on the 17. Only problem is the grey, in which the Envy 15 seems more Black/White, whereas the Envy 17 seems like the grey has been mixed with some violet. Couple more pictures:

I understand that. But since its not impossible HP should have taken care to not take a backward step with their latest product.Maybe Fix it with a Software or BIOS update later if that is possible.Booting from USB is a forward step and not having switchable graphics is essentially a backward step.

And why advertise upto 5.25 hrs of battery in the First place with the 3D model ?? That is misleading customers.Coz with that there it seemed so perfect for all my needs. And after 2 days I realize it isn't.Sucks BiGtime.
Specially when you configure the 3D and Non-3d models separately.

@The Overture...Yes I agree that the 17 screen has bluish tinge much like the Super Amoled screens of the Samsung phones. But for colours overall I would still vote for the Envy 17.Better for Movie watching and Gaming. :)

Looking back, that seems like an accurate assessment. It doesn't seem quite as noticeable on my screen, but there is a slight variation between true grays and those made on the Envy 17. It's all relative, so my grays still seem appropriate, but I can imagine this would be bothersome next to monitors with more accurate grayscales.

Haha yup, really bugging me when I have two screens to compare with! I tried viewing the photos I posted on this thread with my Envy 17, and there weren't much noticeable differences between the comparison photos due to the reproduction issues with the 17. If I view it on the 15, the differences are much clearer, and much closer to what I see with my eyes in real life. So I guess if you're viewing it from an Envy 17 now, you won't see the differences as much as I do in real life. Take my word, it's much more severe than what you see!

You people are just asking for a punch in the face! I ordered mine on the 4th of June and after a delay it's only just now made it to the Shanghai loading docks, and an agonizing 4-5 day delivery time.

Can't you just use a color calibration tool to fix any color issue? Perhaps I'm being naive, I just thought that was the whole point of them.

I was looking for a tool released by HP but can't seem to find one. Perhaps you could point me to a reliable color calibration tool? Thanks!
