Hold the keyboard backlight button and press UP or DOWN keys

No, just switch to 60Hz when you're not using 3D. Why would you use it on battery? If you're out for the day and you know you're not gonna be running on AC, BE CONSERVATIVE.

Is the non-3D at 60HZ then?

I see where you're coming from but at the same time, where do the people who want superior build quality and support to go? The DV7 is nice yes but I, and many other for that matter, prefer to not have backlight key bleeding and an all metal shell and the ability to connect 3 external monitors simultaneously and the many other features the envy offers over the pavillion line. Adding an ODD can only be a win for everyone. Worst case scenario is that you don't use the ODD at all, at least you have an extra feature you can utilize should you need to. I can't agree that the envy has been neutered in any way. The 7850m blows the 650m and 630m away, the envy runs cooler and is more reliable so how has it been neutered?

I agree, I don't get the neutered performance statement. Probably because it makes no sense.

i agree guys...im very disappointed in the 3D model given the battery life. Let's be real, the 3D is very cool and i still would like to have it, but im a student and battery life is crucial. Watching an occasional movie or video game in 3D is great, but how often would you really use it?

If you really want to watch movies in 3D go buy a 3D tv which would sure be cheaper and better than this laptop.

I've got 21 days for HP to release some type of fix, otherwise i'll be like one of the many sending it back.

So after all the bull HP put me through, I opened my box today to find the case bent by the usb port. Now I'm not sure if i should keep this or deal with the lousy return/ exchange process. Any ideas?

If battery life means that much to all of you, go buy a Spectre or Folio, or worse a MBP.

Technology has advanced, but it still rings true that you can't have this level of performance and battery life in the same package. Choose one or the other.

I have the option of getting a quick ship model as a replacement but it doesn't have the hybrid hard drive anymore. It just has a normal 750GB drive. Anyone with the Envy 17-3270nr care to comment?

My Envy 17 3D arrived Friday. The build quality is ok. I expected them to have fixed some of the nagging issues, specifically the ones Maverick777 mentioned with the slightly protruding base cover. however, my biggest gripe right now are the loose keys, specfically W, S, D, E, Q, Z, X. The make a "thud" sound and have a hollow feel to them. They aren't solid like the other keys. Is this normal or should I be requesting an exchange?

I say if the laptop is perfect in everything else, I would just try to bend the piece back in. You'd be waiting forever for a replacement. It does look like it can bend back to normal and nobody will ever know...

Hey guys, I just got the email update on my order that was suppose to ship last week. The expected date is now 2 more weeks out. Funny thing is if I go to order one today on the website, it gives me the exact ship date as my now delayed ship date. So what the ....? I could place an order today and get it the same time, REALLY?

My question for everyone out there is what was the best deal anyone out there was able to negotiate for HP's stellar performance?

I was considering asking for a quickship but the website says quickship models only come with a 1 year warranty. Anyway what was the most $, upgrade, anything that anyone was able to procure?

    Thanks for any responses.

they offered you a quickship due to the delay for the same price?
I didnt go with quickship since the coupon would not apply to it and the warranty was 1 yr.
If I can get them to switch everything to quickship for no extra $ I would.
Who did you talk to for that option?

depends how much of a rush you are in ,
the hybrid is much faster but I would say you can get the 1TB HDD and add a SSD to it.

honestly it make no sense for anyone to run their OS on a HDD on i7 ivybridge.. if you are paying so much for the processor you can not forget about the bottleneck effect of HDD. almost 3 min compared to 30 second boot time
that is huge.. that is like pentium 2 and core 2 duo

I already have a 120GB SSD here waiting to be installed. The quick ship ended up being less money with more RAM, blu-ray and WiDi. I decided to go that route as the 1yr warranty doesn't really bother me at this point. Hopefully it all goes well since they said I should be receiving it tomorrow. I had it shipped to my job to ensure it gets delivered. None of this chasing down the delivery guy like I had to do today.

Anyone who can't use their Intel HD 4000 by switchable graphics options please call 1-877-917-4380 Ex. 93 and report it. The more people that report it to this HP department the sooner we all will be able to utilize our integrated Intel graphics card and get our Wireless Display (WiDi) working and save our battery life. Just trying to help. Just got my Envy 17 3D 3200 today and cannot believe that HP has not come up with a fix. Good Luck Everyone

I just got my Envy 17 3200 today...after returning the 3000 series twice due to the keyboard issue, as I brought up in the other thread.

Sadly, the new one still introduces numbers when typing the letters asdf quickly. I really can't believe they made the same mistake again. This is with the F.05 bios, will try F.06 once the recovery discs are made. Can anyone confirm this?

On top of that, my optical disc drive does not eject properly...I have to prod it for 20 minutes with a mail opener to get a disc out.

This is my 3rd Envy 17 in the past two months, given as a replacement for my dv7t by my HP case manager. At a loss at what to do now since I haven't had a laptop for more than 3 weeks at a time since February at this point...that's HP.

My keyboard has no issues from what I see and have been typing. Just trying to get used to the style of it. I switched to 30% brightness and to 60HZ refresh and my battery says I should get over 4 hours just browsing and chatting on the laptop. I can easily switch it back to 120HZ if needing to watch 3D stuff so I think if it can get in the 3.5+ hour range with me doing stuff like this I should be ok. I'm going to watch some shows on this tonight to see what exactly it does to the battery.

Get ready for more delays. I ordered on the 4th, (orig ship date 6/13) and I'm still waiting. From what they told me at HP, the latest delay has my ship date scheduled for tomorrow - though I wouldnt know from the HP website, as it still shows my Envy scheduled to ship on June 13th LOL. Who knows ? Maybe tomorrow will actually be the day.

And will also post another in the HP Forums to see what they have to say.Though I wanted the 3D I primarily wanted to buy this Envy coz of the combination 3D battery life with Integrated HD 4000.Seemed perfect for my needs.

I feel your pain. My order was so basic, already had the SSD & RAM waiting for it. By the time it's shipped those parts will probably be outdated.

Will we ever get it & when we do will it have a good build. :nah: :nah: :nah: :nah:

Thanks "Souravsunny", I figured people need to know what is going on and who to contact to get the engineers going once they receive this product and don't know where to turn. Not to mention this is my first 3rd Gen i7 Ivy Bridge config, but my 5th Envy 17 3D since Jan 2012. I was kind of hoping to use the Ivy Bridge functions that I paid for vs. the Sandy Bridge version which I seemed to not have any luck with after having four defective units in the past six months. Nothing to Envy about that..

I agree. Call up HP and tell them you want to return it. Before they let you return it, they'll most likely offer you $40 or something to keep the damaged one. Then you say "sure, I'll do that" and then you bend the metal back in place and BAM you don't have to be without your new laptop for several very looooooong weeks and you get some money back.

Same, mine is only 6.8, but when I check the switchable graphics, it is set to high performance.

How did you get yours to be 7.3 ranmasaotome510, is it because you are using the beta drivers?

Instead of progress HP does a Regress.

I know, I know... I'm hoping tomorrow will be the day, but I've heard so many boiler plate stories from HP, that I'm keeping my expectations very low. Maybe I will be a happy camper tomorrow.

My order was pretty basic too, and there wasnt ONE component that others had ordered, and shipped long before mine, that could have caused this delay. I'm convinced the factory folks totally blew it.

You are so right, that we still have to worry about a good build... and, if the switchable graphics issue will be resolved. If not, anyone who requires portability may have no choice, but to consider returning this model. I remain hopeful there will be a fix, but that's an unknown.

Try opening the beats audio control panel and checking that speakers and headphones box is checkmarked.

HP is limited to what they can get from hardware manufacturers, in this case it looks like both AMD and Nvidia cards cannot do switchable graphics at all. What are they supposed to do, make their own graphics cards? Newer does not mean better, it should but it doesn't always work that way. And it may be better in a particular area but deficient in another, deal with it.

Though it would be nice if it were a software issue that just didn't get worked out before the unit was scheduled for release and they decided to not postpone the release and went ahead with it. Very unlikely as they would typically just release it and release patches as needed but you can always hope.

The msata slot will function at sata iii speeds, however I do not know what else is on the pciexpress lane so it may or may not get slower when the computer is under a heavy load as something else may use the bandwidth and lower the overall speed.

Sounds like you're using the integrated Intel HD4000 and not the 7850m. You have to manually assign the programs you want to run with the dedicated graphics card, it should be somewhere in the control center.

It's already packed up and ready to ship back to HP. My quick ship replacement is being delivered today actually. It has more 8gb RAM as opposed to the 6gb I ordered, WiDi, and a bluray drive. All for about $70 less than what I paid for. The hard drive is a regular 750gb 7200 rpm instead of the hybrid drive, but I have a brand new SSD here to install.

    Yeah I said it!

I was pissed when I opened it. After all the delays, then the shipping delays, then the delivery guy not ringing the doorbell... It seems like I was destined to return this. Any issues with the replacement and I'm asking for a full refund.

    Yeah I said it!

Right click on the diablo icon that is on your desktop . Make sure it says its using the right video card as default. If not click the one you want it to use when you start the game. There is a way to make it the default card for each game but i had no luck in making it stay that way.

Ok, so I've received my replacement quick ship model 17-3270nr. Creating the restoration discs as we speak while I work. At lunch I'll open her up and confirm the hard drive model. I think it's definitely not the hybrid drive as this one took a little longer to boot up than the one I have to return. Doesn't matter though as the SSD is going in as soon as these discs are done burning.

So far so good. I haven't had much time to REALLY inspect it as I'm at work with it in a corner of my desk burning the recovery dvds. Once that's done I'll take "lunch" and really go over it with a fine tooth comb. Any issues I should look out for?

Figured out the problem on the headphones issue. I just clicked "Start", "Help Support", "Assistance", then chatted with a live rep at 2am. We did some troubleshooting and he had me update the BIOS (I did once I received the laptop but apparently he had another?). Works now, very quick and easy.

As far as people saying the hybrid drive is slow, my laptop cold boots in like 20 seconds or so if that. I would say it is pretty quick.

That would be the same one you had before, most likely it messed up somewhere and the second installation corrected it. Only one BIOS revision available to us, shipped with F.05 and that is F.06

You could check to make sure by hitting F10 when turning on the computer, first screen will have the BIOS version listed.

(you did a really good job of explaining the Master Key Concept... I was trying to reply, but quit when I got way too wordy)

That is what I was thinking also; two BIOS updates that quick seems very odd.

Just an update on the battery life for people considering the 3D.

Listened to music, surfed the web, was in chat messengers, had a few other programs open and got 3.5 hours at 30% brightness, refresh at 60HZ and lowest backlit keys with wifi on.
Watched some shows on my laptop full screen and volume at 2 bars on the beats audio same settings and got over 3 hours. Battery life isn't too bad as everyone is saying. I really don't see how anyone would need brightness over 50% as this screen is damn bright (maybe if you were outside in the sun). I can simply put it back to 120HZ if I am going to use 3D which isn't a big deal.
