What kind of battery life are you guys getting on this in surf mode? Also, how is the WiFi? I've heard same card as Samsung Series 7, but with different antenna placement.

If by "surf mode" you are referring to power saver, then about 4 hours with my 3D

Also, WiFi is ridiculously fast/good. Its fine.

The power draw is less than 125 watts then, power bricks are not 100% efficient. So the power draw of the laptop is always less than what is coming out of the wall. Now if someone was measuring the power from the plug to the jack that would be a different story. Does that meter have also read DC? You could jury rig a test system.

Well after waiting for over a month after my order, my laptop is finally on the Fedex truck out for delivery... Feel like a kid at christmas... Now if only this truck would get here!!

Good to hear your getting 4 hrs on the 3d -- That's pretty acceptable in my opinion.

Anyone having stability issues with the 12.7 beta's? I keep getting BSOD's when the laptop switches from the 7850m back to the integrated.

I was referring to just internet browsing mainly or a few applications open. Nice to hear the WiFi is good. What kind of battery life are you getting when it's on "High performance"?

More inputs from others on battery life for non-3D models would be nice too before I pull the trigger on buying this.

    Hi Everyone,

Assuming all goes well with the unboxing, I wish to add an SSD Drive. I would appreciate recommendations for the best deals for a high quality drive. Im willing to sacrifice a bit on price for a good drive. Also, I thought another member mentioned a video on how to do this, and what steps to take. Can you please direct me to *easy to understand* instructions ?

Also, do I need to purchase a bracket for the SSD Drive ?

FYI, I'm a serious newbie at opening a Laptop, so I need step by step instructions. On another note, do you suggest letting a professional do this, or should I do it myself ? I'm pretty good with computers in general.

Thanks very much for any advice/assistance !

just got my envy 17, everything seems great to me. Windows button was a bit "tight" but i just pushed it down and it clicked into place and all is well. I am about to upgrade to windows 7 utimate, i normally never make recovery dvd's, is it really worse to just do a clean install?

Its very simple to do. You can order the caddy or use double sided tape. Both will work. Here is an easy to understand video. Good luck.

    Add a 2nd Hard Drive to a HP Envy 17 -3000 series laptop (3xxx) - YouTube

The WIFI is freakin awesome. The range on the 2.4 GHz is outstanding and I'm getting 20 Mbps down, on the 5GHz the range seems to be a little better than average and I'm getting 15-16 Mbps down (expected it to be faster than the 2.4 GHz as it is more congested on my network). Either way these are great numbers for my WIFI network which is fairly decent and range is great.

    Hi to everybody!

New to the forum and just got my Envy 17 3200 CTO laptop.

I was following this forum for the time I was waiting for my Envy, and I have to say I was lucky to have fast production and shipping, everything took less then two weeks, got it with no cosmetic or any other issues (actualy I just noticed that I have squeaky backspace, damn it! :)

Anyhow, after Asus G74, which was soooo unfinished product, this little flaw is no big deal.

I installed SSD drive, did clean OS install and found out that some things are missing and couldnt be found on hp website, like HP Media Smart which gives you that cool beats logo animation when using volume knob.

I was to lazy to make recovery discs (actualy I had only 3 empty dvd's, and that thing requires 5), so I killed everything that had to do with HP, meaning recovery and system partitions...... now I am kind of sorry....

So, do anybody have disc image of recovery disc's, or maybe a list of things missing comparing to retail OS and links to download them?

PS: Yes I know, the last one is a long shot :)

    Thanks

Place an order and have them shipped to you, that way you will not need to make them yourself.
The Quality of the disks will be the highest possible.

Hey has anyone tried to install Windows 8 RP on this thing yet? Any impressions? I'm contemplating loading it on up. Also for those that hate the terrible log in screen wallpaper I found a neat little tool that can swap it out for any 1080p wallpaper you prefer. It's called "win7 logon screen background changer", not a very creative name I know but, works like a charm!

I have not been able to get it to work, but that's because I'm using TrueCrypt to protect my data in case of theft. If you are not doing encryption then you can use bootloaders. You will need to install the bootloader on the mSATA, then have it boot the main drive. You can use EasyBCD, I think.

The 3xxx series is very aggressive with notebook cooling. I'd much rather have loud fans when gaming and longer notebook life than a silent burning furnace under my fingers and palms.

Yeah I was pretty surprised on how well it played. Maybe with a little OC with some new Drivers you'll see FPS around the 50s. The Laptop does have a great cooling system for it...

Love my envy 17 so far, really glad I went with it. Everything was perfect build quality wise except for 1 dead pixel on the lower right corner. Pretty sure I'm going to send it back for a new one. Hope I'm not being too picky, but when you spend this much on a product you expect it to be perfect right?

Recording with Fraps the FPS was recording in the 50s. Without Fraps the FPS never dipped below 60. Even Multiplayer I got 60FPS... When I say on the videos I post, I'm saying the FPS without Fraps recording...
