This.... Used a USB 3.0 32gb flash drive for my recovery. Worked like a charm, is fast and durable. Now that I think about it though they should've included the option for a bluray writer with this PC, they have it for the DV7 and would've been a great addition here.

HP Envy 17 with AMD Radeon HD 7850m Batman Arkham City - YouTube
Here's Batman Arkham City Demo Gameplay video. It should give you an idea of the FPS your gonna get in the Full version. Settings were on High with shadows off as always. Gameplay and Graphics were very smooth. FPS was around 47-58FPS... Hope you enjoy...

Guys, is there any way to check which card is working, Intel or Radeon? I know it switches with selection of "performance" or "power save" modes, but is there a way to see which one is active? Maybe with a sw?

Is there any notice when switch is being done, like screen flickering, etc?

    Thanks

Hey guys, just finished making my recovery disks. No errors happened this time so that particular disk must've been a dud just like someone said, albeit I used the same sony disks to continue. Special thanks and shoutouts to adamdoom89 and AU4U. Now all I have to do is go and pick up an external drive to back up all of my music, pictures and other miscellaneous. BTW, I did find a program to get all of my music back to itunes. Its called 4media ipod to pc transfer and its about 30 bucks but it works really good.

Quick question: do I still need that recovery partition on my drive taking up space since I already made my recovery disks?

NICE! I'm glad I made the switch. I've been using it since Thursday and it's a JOY to use.

Anyone having an odd "clicking" noise? I barely stress the laptop under normal use but I'll get an odd noise from the keypad area..I can tell the difference between the hard drive working but this click seems like IT IS coming from the hard drive..it's uncharacteristic

Where is the hard drive located exactly? Anyone have this noise? Only complaint so far besides the unaligned bottom casing underneath the right front speaker grille.

    Hi Everyone,

Easy question please. I was wondering if the red band around the keyboard, or the red on the Beats Wheel is supposed to light up ? It seemed that way in the photo. I'm guessing no.... but in case it does, can you advise how to enable it ?

    Thank you !

Nah, I just had it ripped from my ipod and placed back on my itunes. "It was a grueling proces" is a friggin understatement. It took about 12 hours to get all of my music back onto itunes on my new envy. Awhile back, my older laptop crashed on me and I never had an external drive to back anything up to (Yes, I know I'm stupid), so all I was left with was the music on my ipod, which was pretty much all of my music in my itunes account.

Is 7850M even better than 2GB GT650M .?? (Coz 7850M has got only 1GB VRAM)

And which is better for moderate gaming dv6 or envy (in terms of temperatures).??

Yes and its almost as good as the GTX 660M..RAM of a graphics card hardly has to do much with gaming..its more about the number of shaders, pipelines, the clock speed, voltage, etc

    eg.
GT540M and GT 520M had 2gb VRAM and my GTX 460M has 1.5gb and 7850M has 1gb...both 7850M and GTX 460M are much much better graphics cards than the GT 540M ...GT520M isnt even worth mentioning coz its an entry level graphics chip.
    In order in this case..

    7850M > GTX 460M >> GT 540M >>> GT 520M

Current Envy series has awesome temperatures..equals the ASUS G75 ..Might even better it...people are getting max temps of 64-66 degress even after overclocking to 800/1300..and the graphics chip take more..remember to keep the fan vents clean as a regular maintenance once a month..u should be fine.
DV6 gets heated up easily Maverick would tell u that..He had both..ENvy is good even for heavy gaming ..there are people who have played for 4-5 hrs straight without having to deal with temp more than 66..

Okay , but is the dv6 also comfortable to game for long stretches of 4~5 hrs .?

And which is more probable to last long dv6 or envy coz i'll be taking it outside US where there would be no warranty .

Okay, so at the moment, I'm having a few problems and see if anyone knows a fix.

For the first, it's the same as most people are having. Not being able to switch to the Intel graphics, and CCC has no option whatsoever regarding the matter.

For the second, I can't seem to adjust the screen brightness! Like, at all! When I unplug the laptop, brightness goes to lowest, and when I replug it, it remains that way! Pressing the brightness keys (using FN and not) won't do anything! And there is no brightness setting in the power options. What gives?

Any help would be truly appreciated. Thanks!

I would recommend the msata so you have the regular 2.5 bays open, right now the best on the market is the adata sx300 or mydigitalssd smart series, as far as anyone knows they are identical, both cards read as the adata sx300. Hard to get though since they're both the best you can get.

If you have the 3d model, the graphics are not switchable. Otherwise you set them up on an app by app basis.

Tip: don't hit the Fn key when adjusting brightness. It's set up to work without it.

The Crucial M4 mSATA is coming out in the next few weeks and that's the one I'm looking for, mainly because it's a proven design being scaled down to a mSATA form factor.

    EDIT:
And before I forget, here's my config:
2.5" HDD Bay #1 will get a Samsung PM830 256GB drive, the 750GB Hybrid drive will move to Bay #2 since it's crippled to 3GB/sec anyway by HP and the mSATA port will get a 256GB mSATA drive, most likely the Crucial. Windows/apps/etc. will go to the mSATA drive, games will be on the Samsung, data will be on the 750GB hybrid drive.

Thing is, it doesn't work with or without the FN key. The other function keys do work, such as backlit keyboard on/off. But the brightness one just won't do anything!

I just ordered my Envy last Wednesday and it got the status of In Production on Friday. Last time I ordered one was around Christmas(when they were first released) for my cousin and I know the load of CTO laptops was quite high then and I don't think it would be an accurate situation to base this time off of this time around.

How long did your guys Envy stay In Production before it was packaged and shipped from the Shenzhen factory?

Never has been an issue on the 17". The 15" has an IPS Panel (display) and it had the red green issue which has mostly been resolved. The 17? is not IPS and is fine.

But more importantly, why would you buy from BB when there is a 33% off code from HP, unless you of course needed one immediately? BB model comes with 1 year waaranty ( I belive) and custom order definitely comes with 2 year.

YEAH!!! I'm the first post on page 200, now if I had the lottery ticket numbers.

Here's another comparison of LCD panels.

This time it's the Envy 17 vs the Y580. They seem similar but the Envy has a blue tinge to it. I did not alter any of the color settings on either laptop

    Y580 vs. Envy 17 1080p panel test - YouTube

And if you're wondering, I kept the Envy 17. I love the size and build quality. Lenovo was all creaky and had a mid 2000's look

Yep, notice the blue cast on the screen as well. My screen got a lot warmer after i did the calibration. I'm editing my images/photos on this screen and it looks awesome! However, i have to really lower brightness to 3 bars to get the correct overall exposure on my images (highlights/shadows).

    2 questions for ya:

    1. What is an NAS?
    2. Why isnt it a good idea to keep all of your media on the external. I thought that would actually be the ideal thing to do? Isnt there a way of copying the files or no? Sorry, Im very novice when it comes to this kind of stuff but im trying to get better. Thanks.

    NAS = Network Attached Storage
usually runs in RAID and has multiple security features to protect from data loss.

External storage can fail as easily as internal storage, so having it in more than one place is good, but neither has any preventive measures for data loss
