How did you break 3K for 3DMark 11? I'm at 2973 points with an overclock of 855 core/ 1300 mem.
hey machater, did you input any additional settings to get 2943 points at only 815 core and 1300 mem?

Hey I was just wondering how hot your laptop gets. For example, my laptop is not hot anywhere except right in front of the hp logo on the screen and above the speakers. Could you also tell me how high your fans go? My fan seems to have 3 speeds. There is the normal soft fan when just browsing, the higher speed fan when playing games, then there's one speed that produces a slightly high pitched sound from the fan going on high speed (lasts 1-2 minutes). Is this normal? Also how are you temperatures?

What are the temperatures for your computer? The are right in front of the hp logo/above the speakers in front of the screen gets really hot when gaming. the fan seems to have 3 speeds from what I have seen. There is the normal soft fan when just browsing, the higher speed fan when playing games, then there's one speed that produces a slightly high pitched sound from the fan going on high speed (lasts 1-2 minutes).

My Laptop really never gets hot. I use Hardware Monitor Pro to watch my temperatures very closely. I also use a Laptop stand which fits perfectly for the Envy. My fans never get that loud while browsing the web, doing work in Photoshop or watching movies. When I'm gaming that's when they kick in and you can hear them running. The Envy has one of the best cooling systems around... I hope this helps answer your questions...

For those of you that are effected by the auto-leveling issue (all of us) but hate to lose Beats Audio, I just switched to SRS HDAL which is much better because it doesn't have the volume limiting/compression and the leveling problem the stock audio software does, and audio quality is much better. MUCH better. Not only is it much louder, there is much more detail and bass. I used this on my DV7-4000 which had horrible stock speakers and it's making a world of difference here too. Just make sure you set it to lineout and not dockout.

Loving my new ENVY17 though. Some minor issues like the screen seeming a little blurry to me at times but way better than a MBP at this price point.

My temps are low. It barely gets hot even when I use it on my lap. I usually game on a desk but the case barely gets hot.

So I have found no problems with my unit EXCEPT with the bottom case. It seems to be un-even on the right side. It's almost like a wavy pattern..and it's noticeable from a distance

Have you touched the area right in front of the hp logo on the screen? It seems to get really hot for me. I also just experienced multiple crashes running assassins creed revelations >_>. When I try to remove the program, it steam is running in windows compatibility mode. I have reinstalled before and it is the only game that seems to crash. Civ 5 runs fine on max settings and dota 2 runs fine on max settings as well.

I've ordered a 3200 without the msata (went up $100 the day I went to order). I am going to buy a crucial 256 msata for it. What screw size do I need to fix it into place?

EDIT: Okay, found out from the service manual that they are "PM2.0×2.8 screw". If I go into an electronics store (e.g. Jaycar) and ask for "PM2.0×2.8 screws" are they going to know what I'm talking about?

Weird, I've never had problems with ACR...

Side note: I have a vid, of Flight Simulator X that I'm gonna upload this afternoon. Runs great until you record with FRAPS... Perhaps I should have had it save to my external drive or I really need that SSD.

Seems that they changed it to a new program called audio essentials (I'm using an old version called HD Audio Lab from my old DV7)
SRS Labs :: Audio Essentials Download, 1 PC License $29.99

On the laptop speaker setting I keep the Definition setting low and the tru-bass at 150Hz/maxed out, the focus slightly up and the center nearly maxed out and space maxed out. Headphones/speakers require a settings change.

I see there is a fix now for the auto leveling problem that retains the beats software but imho this software sounds better. Yes it uninstalls completely and there is a trial version.

My fan is constantly running..even when I'm merely browsing on one tab. Is it normal?

The hard drive makes an audible "click" noise and my bottom case is not aligned correctly. It's wavy on the right side at the seams

For anyone that's made the recovery discs via USB stick instead of DVDs, how big did you need for the USB drive?

Also, if you make the recovery media via USB stick, can you then later go back and make the discs? Or, is it just one or the other?

My 3D version was 19GB for a thumb drive recovery. I ended up just using 3 DVD+R Dual Layers as the biggest thumb drive I had was 16GB and didn't want to waist it on a recovery image.

You wont need more than 8GB on a Class 6+ (preferably class 10) flash drive.
Do a complete system image, convert to ISO and follow the directions.

Could multiple people CLEARLY define how loud the fan gets for them while playing INTENSIVE games? The cooling is absolutely normal during browsing, but I am slightly worried. The fan kicks up to a high speed/pitched level when playing Dota 2 at maxed settings. This is a little annoying. It goes beyond the noticeable fan sound. Has this happened to anyone before? I am considering on returning the Envy 17 I have right now because of this cooling problem. There are 3 fan levels for me. One that is almost unnoticeable and one that is noticeable. Then there is the high speed and high pitched fan speed that clearly does not sound normal. It is very obnoxious and lasts for 1-5 minutes. Does anyone have this problem once again?

The day I got it the system was formatted and I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 Ultimate.

You're worrying too much about that... If you are playing... Fan will kick for sure... @ max speed.. My desktop have a Boing 747 (Geforce GTS250 .. is knows to have fan issues) I got used to that, so nothing cant be worst.

All the laptops are "noisy" for gaming, even the Alienware, probably the most quiet one.. are MacBookPro.. but well they aren't "gaming laptops"

Yes, but there is a standard for every laptop. I don't mean to be rude, but there is a difference and I'd like to know based on people who currently own an Envy 17 with claims that temp. is not a problem and fans seem relatively quiet. If it's normal, I'll move on, but I would like some feedback from current owners to be sure.

Fan noise is normal if the system is being taxed, as long as the fans are keeping the system sufficiently cool.

    If it's noisy but still hot (e.g. > 100*C), then there's a problem.

Thank you Maverick. I tried right clicking on my desktop, and cant get past step 1, as it does not show "graphics properties". There's a "Catalyst control center" option. I believe I have the default graphics driver that came with the laptop (at least I think I do). Should I update the driver ? If so, what & where is the best version to download ? Thanks very much !

    1. Delete the file RMCStatus.bin (hidden) from two places:
    -c:\Program Files(x86)\Hewlett-Packard\Recovery Manager\
-The root of a drive d:\ (RECOVERY partition)
    2. Remove Rebecca.dat (also hidden) from C:\Windows\System32\

I made my discs yesterday but on the way home from work I picked up a 32gb flash drive so I wanted to make a bootable image of the recovery drive put on to the pen drive. Unfortunately it checks to see if you had already made a backup. Follow the above directions and it will allow you to either make another DVD or pen drive with the backup image.

Just in case anybody cares, my 17 non-3d has the as6fdasd6f problem (see those 6's - I didn't type them!). Interesting thing, if I turn off numlock, the problems goes away. Hopefully HP can fix this in a BIOS update. Otherwise, I'm really liking this computer.

You only need 8GB Class 6+ (preferably class 10) for a full recovery USB.
You have to format the USB for ISO Booting.
W7 HP is only 3.2GB in size as an ISO.
If you ever purchase a netbook W/O an opti drive, you will get familiar with this process.

For the Envy 17 32xx you need a drive with at least 15gb free (per the recovery program, it wont even let you select a pen drive with less than 15gb FREE) which means a 16gb wont work. I picked up a 32gb PNY for like 19.99 at Best Buy. A 16gb pen drive has 14.9GB free btw.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Looks like I'll get a 32gb drive for the recovery and an 8gb drive for a fresh win7 install. Looking at the patriot xt drives for their reported speediness but they are very pricy compared to other brands.

I have a quick question. I just purchased the Envy 17 with the 750gb hd. I'm planning on using the drive as a secondary and installing an ssd in its place. I know I'll need to purchase the additional bracket, but I'm wondering with the Samsung 830 drives, whether or not I need to purchase the one with the additional thickness bracket. I know they sell just the drive separately, and I'm wondering which one I'll need.

    Thanks.

I own three of the Patriot XPorter XT drives, two 16GB USB 2.0 drives (connected to my Xbox 360 Slim for additional space), a 32GB USB 2.0 drive (which will be turning into my Envy recovery boot USB drive) and just ordered a 32GB USB 3.0 drive to replace the USB 2.0 one.

I've had them for multiple years and think they're well worth the price premium, since they're rubber coated and water-resistant. They're also pretty speedy do the job well. Having gone through multiple brands over the years, I've been happy since sticking to this brand.

The USB 3.0 32GB drive is $30 on Amazon and Newegg, where the USB 2.0 is a bit more expensive, almost $40. I know the 32GB I picked up was under $30 AR and the 16GBs have been under $20 AR before. The 8GBs are $12 or so on Amazon and Newegg last time I checked.

Don't you just love free and open source software like VLC?
If VLC cant play it, its not playable, it plays every type of media file.

VideoLAN - Official page for VLC media player, the Open Source video framework!

I dump QTime and WMP as soon as I get a new PC, no Apple software for me, no IPods, IPhone, etc, I hate Apple and their locked down OS, its even worse than what HP does to their system.
I love Linux though, Android, Back Track, UBuntu..........

    Marry me?... Lol
That's exactly why I hate Apple. And its funny cuz fanboys/girls just don't ser what's being done to them. Microsoft is going down the same path though... :(

Backtrack obviously for network integrity and security. I use Ubuntu for their live discs for recovering files etc, and a Windows Phone. ;) Android isn't really free anyway.
