    > I'm committed to someone, she's wonderful.

    >> Their programs do work well the the OS, some people I know only use MS products (and certified products) with with Windows, they never seem to have OS problems,,,,,its the other crappy software writers that programs don't work well with Windows. Write some script, send it out, rely on 'Bug Reports' to to create and issue updates.

    >>> I haven't paid for 1 .apk on my tab. Out of 10 I would DL, 2 programs may be good, deleted the rest of them. Someone, somewhere, has posted it on the net for free, Google is your friend.

    I need audio input help!

I'm unable to use the microphone on any of my headsets with the Envy 17. I have a generic Apple iPhone headset with built-in mic, and a set of aftermarket in-ear headphones with a built-in mic. Both the headphones and the microphone work fine with my old (2010) Envy 15 and my phone.

With the brand-new Envy 17, only the headphones work. No audio is picked up via the microphone. I've tried both headphone jacks. They are detected in windows as "communications headphones," but they only show up on the "playback" tab of the Sound Control Panel and not on the "recording" tab. The internal microphone array on the laptop works, but is miserable for gaming communication.

The Beats control panel is similar. When plugged in, both headsets show up as "communications headphones," but only for playback. You can enable them in either the windows sound control panel as the "default communications device" in the playback tab, but this does not seem to have an affect on anything. They still play audio, but don't record anything from the mic.

At the very least, could someone confirm that headphones with a built-in mic and a single 4-contact jack (like iPhone headphones) work in the Envy 17? Or do I need separate plugs for the headphones and the microphone?

    Any help is welcome!!

This computer has three standard 3.5mm jacks... two for headphones and one for microphone. Nothing tricky.

You usually don't see the two-in-one (headphone + mic) jack on computers.

Except, you know, on the previous generation of Envy laptops. You can see how there might be some confusion on my part after upgrading.

I'm going to grab a cheap pair of two-plug PC headphones on the way home to test with, so I'm cautiously optimistic that this is all it is. It looks like there are some adapters available to split 4-contact phone headphones for use with two 3-contact jacks on a PC, so if it turns out that that's all I need, I'll order an adapter and resume using my preferred earbuds once I've confirmed it's not a different problem.

Interesting. I tried the mic port, and got neither microphone nor audio from that, but I didn't spend nearly as much time testing settings with that one. I'll give it a closer look when I get home.

    Urgent! Need feedback.

My customized Envy 17 arrived today. I looked on the Fed Ex tracking info this afternoon. It was marked as Delivered. Strangely enough, I hadn't received it yet. Furthermore it was marked as "Damaged, delivered" and signed for by someone I didn't know. While I was outside about an hour ago, my neighbor comes over with a box. She said the Fed Ex guy mistakenly delivered it to her, and told her that box was damaged in transit. Sure enough, it was banged up pretty bad. There were large holes in both slim sides of the cardboard. The actual Envy box was dented decently on one side. The laptop itself seemed to be working fine when I turned it on. I was pretty po'd, as I had been waiting for this thing for several weeks, and waited till the 33% cuopon to order. My school is starting up now, so I need it asap.

What do I do? Should I talk to HP? I'm calling Fed Ex right now.

damn that sucks call hp, demand discount, demand upgrade, demand prioritized replacement, demand to keep the current one till the replacement arrives. the build times right now are pretty good (my replacement was ordered july 24, shiped yesterday july 29 and should be at my house on aug 2) u should be able to get discount (like 50$) and an upgrade mine i went for hybrid.

What happened to yours? Anyway, gonna demand an upgrade. They kept my money for 3 weeks, sent me a damaged one and now want me to spend another two weeks without a laptop while grad school piles up on me (need it for class). Did they let you keep yours till the replacement came?

My custom build Envy arrived today (ordered on the 16th with the 33% coupon). Was trackable on the 25th, but didn't actually leave Shanghai till the 27th. Exterior box was in good shape. No dings, dents, or flaws I can see on the actual laptop. Was a little black paint scuffing on right side where the cloth bag was open and the Envy rubbed against the black cardboard. Booted up fine. Was actually surprised at the start up speed with just the hybrid drive. Now I am waiting for my 16 gigs of Corsair Vengeance and 256 gig Samsung 830 SSD from Amazon tomorrow. Envy actually arrived 2 days earlier than estimated delivery date.

Vairules, I know you said the shipping boxes were beat to crap, but you also said "The laptop itself seemed to be working fine when I turned it on." Was there any visible damage to the Envy itself and/or are you having any issues since you been running it?

Your are in the right demanding an upgrade or money return but if the Laptop is fine and not damaged then just keep it. No sense in waiting 3+ weeks for a replacement. My advice is try and get a small refund...

first one my dvd drive didnt eject, makes wierd noises, bulging ports.

second one it was almost flawless except little cut in bezel next to left display hinge which stood out a bit. but the hybrid drive malfunction when i tried to start crashing windows causing bios error. after trouble shooting from hp it was fixed but i didnt want to take the chance of ti crashing/malfunctioning while im in school

Trust me, if you saw how bad the box was dinged up, you'd agree with me - it had to have been knocked around pretty bad. Not letting my $1200+ new toy suffer through that before I get it. I'm getting a call from an escalations manager tomorrow, I'll let you all know what ends up happening.

Interesting that the diagram labels all three the same thing-- after picking up a pair of $10 PC headphones with a separate mic jack to test with, I can confirm that the two with "headphone" icons are just 3-contact 3.5mm stereo output jacks, and that the one with the microphone is a 3-contact 3.5mm input jack for a microphone, and does not appear to be capable of output via either 3- or 4-contact headphones. It also does not work properly with 4-contact headphone microphones. As near as I can tell, it's a mic-only jack unlike the other two.

So, long story short-- unlike the 2010 Envy line, if you expect to use your phone earbuds w/mic on a current-generation Envy, you'll need new headphones with two jacks or one of these to convert.

yeah they let me keep the old one but they billed me for the replacement. so i basically had 2 laptop orders. however, i put them on the bill me later acc cause i knew about hp problems and my credit card cant handle multiple laptops haha.

so if u decide to hold on to ur original while they send a replacement just tell them to charge u on the hp preffered acc/bill me later account both allow u to pay later with 0% interest so u can make sure u got what u want b4 paying up lol

My Envy 17t-3200 (customized) arrived yesterday. I haven't had a chance to pop open the box yet. Had a terrible migrane yesterday and have to work today. Plan to unbox tonight and run the recovery disks. I will let you all know how it goes. I did briefly look over the box and the at least it doesnt appear that the shipping was hard on it (no dings, holes, etc in the shipping box).

Ok ... was starting to review what I needed to do to install the SSD ...

    Had saved off this link

Sean's Windows 7 Install & Optimization Guide for SSDs & HDDs

But it appears that the internal tags the poster uses to hide / show certain break outs is are not working. And these are the tips / tricks I need more than anything else.

Does anyone have a link to a guide to installing / optimizing on an SSD?

    Thanks
    Lan

What is it you're actually trying to do? A clean install of Windows only?

I got my new Envy on Monday and Samsung SSD from Amazon on Tuesday. I pulled out the hybrid HDD and put the SSD in that bay. I then ran the system recover discs and with no issues. System booted and ran with no issues. I then put the hybrid back into the second bay with out wiping or refomating it. Again system booted fine and runs with no issues.

I'm amazed at how much space my games have taken on my HDD... I want an SSD, but i'm already using 261GB on the C: partition... I'd need an enormous capacity SSD.

(I already keep all my media on an external)
