Just thought I'd inform future buyers... HP is now giving you the option to order recovery discs with your laptop again. I took advantage of that (so many people were talking about backup disc burning failures) and was pleasantly surprised to see that windows 7 comes on it's own pack of discs and the HP "application and driver recovery DVD" is a completely separate disc. I'm assuming that means a clean install is simply a matter of not putting in a disc. I don't know if HP has been doing this for a while or if it's a new thing. I just know that 5 years ago, the recovery discs from HP had the OS, drivers, and bloatware all together.

Ok, I went to amazon ready to buy 16 gigs of corsair vengeance. There are at least 3 options though. Do I need to order low profile RAM? Is some RAM only for desktops? Anybody willing to send me a link straight to whichever one I should get? That would be greatly appreciated.

Amazon.com: Corsair Vengeance Laptop Memory Kit 16 GB (2x8 GB) DDR3 1600MHz CL10 PC3 12800 (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10): Computers & Accessories
I think this is the right one. Personally I would never spend $115 on 16gb of Ram... -
Is there anyway to disable the intel graphics? Thanks
-
-
That is good to know, thanks.
Edit - intended for khruby -
That's what I'm planning on doing. That RAM was shown to be working at 1600MHz, which is one reason someone else might want it. -
Sorry if I am not understanding the charging USB port thing correctly. -
If the port allows for charge while the laptop is sleeping or off, it's because it's powering the port regardless. It's considered to be helpful so you can charge the laptop and another device at the same time off of one AC plug connection.

The two photoshop applications will register the key with an adobe id so you just have to do that first and you can download the program from their website and use your id. Norton probably has something similar but why would you want to use Norton in the first place, it's a subpar AV anyway.
-
The Envy 17 3200 does have a charging usb port. It is on the left side, towards the back. It has a little tiny lightning bolt next to it. It is the only charging port on mine.

to change it myself but they do not have the part and I have to send my damn laptop that I waited for 2 months in for repair and wait another 2-3 weeks

Needs urgent help!
Hi everyone, I just got my Envy 17-3200 in today and from what I can tell, its a used one. The one piece of manual paper under the laptop itself its all bent and have many scratches on it.The little black folder that contains some HP instructions is also bent. Also the tip of my charger (Where you put into the laptop power hole) have many scratches on it and you can tell its used one. Now the Envy itself, when I first turn it on, it has no battery at all,so I have to plug in the power to charge a bit before turn it on; after I get it to turn on,there is only a recycle bin on my desktop, nothing else more. Only thing it runs automatically after I turn it on its the Element 10 organizer, thats it. I highly doubt this laptop is brand new,and I would like to ask what should I do next. It sucks because I need this laptop for college and I dont want a used one when I payed the price for a brand new one, also the 33% coupon expired so I cant really return this one and buy another one,any thought? I really need help on this, please help me! T.T -
The big Black box on the outside also seems to be a old one,and there is a circled number written on the box itself, under it its a orange sticker and the same number written on it also. Any ideas?

I think i might have finally gotten the perfect envy 15 lol. I odnt wanna get my hopes up but from initial impressions, i dont c any scuffs or marks, no dented ports, the cd drive felt looks clean (havent tested it yet) no screen popping out (the reflections are abit wavy on the edges but it doesnt seem like the glass is popping) none of the keys seem to stick, the trackpad looks fine. no bottom panel sqeaking. no harddrive malfunctioning. hopefully this is the one... cause im outta time. if anything happens i cant send it back in D:
will keep you guys updated! -
For those of you that had to RMA how long did it take? And for those that just went for the refund how did that process go?
I've been on the hunt for an ultra book but I've finally realized that one just won't cut it for what I need. I'm ok with risking that I'll get a defected laptop with the Envy here but my problem is I don't want to wait 2-3 to get the damn thing then turn around wait another 2-3 weeks on getting an RMA. I'm in a rush to make the coupon deadline (I know if I get a good one I'll be happy with the envy) but I just don't want to get myself into some long drawn out process. -

The link for the Vengeance that Adam posted is the correct one and same one I got. Have had no issues with it so far.
I also ordered the recovery disc and used them on the ssd. I don't see where they provided a single Windows install disk (which was what I thought I would get when I bought it). I am pretty sure the 3 recover disc that are listed as windows media contain window, photoshop, and norton plus any blootware. The 4th disc is for hardware drivers. I can live with it.
If you could get your hands on an ISO copy of windows you might be able to do a clean install, but then how do you recover your copy of photoshop and 2 years of norton?Click to expand...Click to expand... -
Is there any problem with just leaving my factory hybrid drive as it is with the OS/drivers/etc on it when I move it to the second bay? If I read correctly, the computer will only boot from the primary hard drive bay so once I've slipped my SSD into the primary bay and installed windows on it, the computer will always read from that drive, right? The reason I'd leave the OS on the hybrid drive is just for another means of backup. I'll probably never need the little room it will take up.

Guys, is there any special gestures with Envy 17's touch pad ?
I mean I've always use the touch pad with just one finger and I heard that Macbook (Pro)'s users have many multi-touch gestures with their touchpad (not sure if it correct or not ?!)
So, what can you guys do with your touchpad except one-finger-moving and double-left-clicking ? -

Hi all. Just thought I'd add a few comments about the Envy 17t-3200. I just received mine a few days ago and, so far, am loving it. It's definitely a major upgrade from my "old" dv7 laptop.
As far a I can tell everything is functioning perfectly. The Envy screen is considerable brighter than the dv7 it replaces, even with the brightness adjusted down a couple notches. It is reflective, but not really noticeable when in use. The dv7 screen was reflective also when the screen was black. It's the first machine I've had with a clicklet-style keyboard, and after using it I like it better also. The back lighting is pretty cool (you can turn it off using a designated key on the keyboard). In normal use it runs cool and quiet. I haven't even heard the fans yet, but I haven't tested then under gaming conditions yet. I'm not a big gamer anyway, but maybe I'll install Call of Duty 4 and see how it does running that. There is A LOT less bloatware than on previous HP laptops, which you can remove using Control Panel or a third party program such as Revo. Start up...wow! With the installed hybrid HD, Windows starts in less than 30 seconds, which is more than twice as the dv7.
I'm sure I've left a few things out, but I just wanted to post some positive information about this terrific machine. Oh, it did have two stickers on the right wrist pad (Window 7 and Intel Core i7) which I immediately removed. For the price, this is a dynamite machine.
What I ordered: (short version)

Radeon HD 7850 M Graphics w/ 1 GB GDDR5

17.3-inch Radiance Full HD Infinity LED-backlit Display (1920x1080)
Blu-ray Player & SuperMulti DVD burner
Intel 802.11a/b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth with Wireless Display Support
Retail Price As Ordered: $1773
Price w/ Coupon: $1188
Total Price w/ California Tax & Fees: $1288
When I ordered: July 16, 2012
Estimated Shipment Date: July 26, 2012
Shipment Date: July 25, 2012 **
Delivery Date: July 30, 2012
**HP notified me that the item was shipped on July 25th but it missed the FedEx cutoff, so the actual shipping date is July 26th.
What I left out above: Battery life has been over 5 hours (non-gaming) of net surfing, getting familiar with my new toy, adding software, etc. with music playing as I did those things. Speaking of music, the Beats Audio sound is good. I think the old dv7-1285dx had a little more bass (built-in sub woofer), but the Beats is a very true sound. I haven't noticed any random volume change, which has been discussed in many posts. One minor "quibble"...to turn the volume up you scroll the wheel down, and to turn the volume down you scroll the wheel up. Huh? -
^ holy sh*t, dat coupon !
I ordered mine (17-3270nr) on amazon. The price was $1328.77 and I had to pay extra $200 for shipping, pretty sh*tty, right ? (I'm asian) -

Got my Envy earlier this week. I was really likin' it. My main purpose for it was a "productivity" laptop with the "MAIN" reason for the 3 external monitors. I have 3 Display Port adapters that I purchased from New Egg. Only using (2) ....the DP to DVI and the DP to VGA. A couple of days ago I plugged in the HDMI and got it up. THEN I plugged in the DP to DVI and it kicked out the HDMI. I could run one or the other. I did some extensive research on the Eyefinity and none of their instructions matched with what I had. In other words when they would say click this option...I didn't have the option. I made sure my drivers for the Intel and the ATI were both uptodate. I dug into the laptop and could never really find any option in the Catalyst Control Center for multiple monitors or Eyefinity.
Today I plugged the 2 DP adapters in 1 DVI 1 VGA. Both of the monitors showed up. However when I plugged in the straight HDMI...it wouldn't go along with the DP ports......only one or the other.
So since I had some time today and decided to call HP. I got a real nice guy by the name of Brandon. He went over and above the call of duty. He pretty much did everything I did....coming up with the same result. He said that there was an issue with the switchable graphics. I told he I understood that to be true of the 3D ...but not this model. He relayed back to me it was BOTH. That they were working on the issue. He went back and forth with the senior Techs and still no joy. We were trying to force it to go to the ATI Radeon by disabling the Intel and never actually could get the Radeon to pop in. When even uninstalled the Radeon to restart and reinstall. At this point he was trying to get AMD on the phone but they were closed today. He is suppose to call me back later on tonight after doing some more research.
I told him I bought this specifically to run the 3 external monitors. He agreed with all the complaints I mentioned....that they should have had this worked out before making this a MAJOR selling point.
So in a nut shell. It doesn't look like that the Radeon ever pops in on my laptop. No indication of Eyefinity hidden anywhere. CANNOT run 3 external monitors.
So.........if any of you want to run 3 external monitors in the future....better check now! -

Brandon did call back. He said that he and the other techs there have been trying to solve the problem of not being able to access eyefinity and were not able to. He is going to call back Monday morning and have a hold of an AMD ATI tech.
I said to Brandon.....surely I am not the 1st one that has brought up this issue. He said it was the 1st for him. I find it a little odd that none of the techs had any input.
We shall see. -

Now my laptop has already charged for about an hour and I still can't turn it on yet. (press and/or hold the power few times but nothing happened).
So how long do I have to charge before I can turn it on ? or is there any problem with my laptop ? -

I am afraid that the Envy you got is a defective one,all HP laptop came with a half charged battery; even if the battery you have is empty at first, once you plugged in your charger for the laptop, the machine should turn on instantly. So you need to call up HP ASAP and request an exchange, the earlier you can call them up and ask for a RMA to ship the laptop back to HP's warehouse, the sooner you can get your exchange laptop ship to you. Normally it takes 4-5 days for FedEx to ship your defective laptop back to warehouse, then it will takes HP around 14-18 days to build your laptop, and another 4-5 days to ship back to you by FedEx. Call HP right away, do not wait for another day. -
