My friend at work sent his back to HP for the 2nd time. He called the repair center and they said they will test his laptop and confirm whether Eyefinity can work. They also had an Envy 17 they were testing while he was on the phone but they didn't have any active displayport cables laying around to test it. They are going to get the necessary cables and test his laptop when it arrives at the repair center. This should give us a definitive answer on whether or not they can get it working by some small miracle. If this is not a hardware limitation, then I think it's a matter of HP not talking to AMD to get the necessary customization with Catalyst Control Panel to get it working.

I had all the adapters that were needed. All one has to do is go into the Catalyst control Center......and unless you are blind......there is NO OPTION for the Eyefinity setup.....NO OPTION!!!!! Also there is NO OPTION for any type of multiple displays or desktops in there NO OPTION.

Why would they put your friend through that? If they want to test it out......all they would have to do is get a 3xxx laptop ......any 3xxx laptop!!!!! The OPTIONS are JUST NOT THERE.....on ANY ONES laptop!!!!! Yours - mine - his- or theirs!!!! Why are they acting so stupid and we continue to go along with it.

My goodness....just "fess up" .....I can understand that more than I can understand this idiotic craziness!!!!!

    Ok....I"m done :)

I had to send mine back-- the blu-ray drive won't eject discs, it started bluescreening regularly, and it eventually wouldn't even finish a system restore without locking up halfway through. Started the process on August 5th, just got it back on the 22nd. So about two and a half weeks from start to finish.

Worse, I don't think they've fixed anything, either. It appears from the note they put in the box that they just re-imaged the hard drive. The blu-ray still won't eject discs unless you turn the laptop upside-down, and although I haven't had a bluescreen yet, I can't get the 7850 to engage at all (which was required to cause the bluescreen), even after setting up "high performance" for specific applications. I'm so angry at HP right now I don't even know what to say. Brand new laptop, sent back after just a few weeks for repair, nothing repaired, sent back to me covered in repair-shop stickers.

I'm so pissed. I don't even know where to go from here. Suggestions?

My friend is OK with sending it in since it's his work laptop. He's still running everything on a desktop so he can afford to be patient and hope they figure something out. If not, he'll return it and get a workstation instead. He needs the 3 monitor setup to work.

Well keep us posted on what "bull" they feed him.

However...I think you may have missed the main point. Do you have the 3D version or no? If you have the non 3D ....look at the Catalyst and tell me what you see.

    Then go over here https://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc...me=c02549367&lc=en&product=4226693&aoid=35252

and look toward the bottom and tell me if you see ANYTHING in your CCC that looks like something this is referring to?

I couldn't.......HP Tech won't be able to.....they remotely accessed my computer and didn't .......they had me try and update and download another version which wouldn't install. AMD couldn't direct me to any thing like this. THey all just quit. Because they released this model without these options.

Don't get me wrong about your friend....it's good that it's not an inconvenience for him. BUT shame on HP....shame on HP for even asking that of him. Why don't they just put him out of his misery and fess up.

Please please don't take this as me being argumentative with you or disrespectuful......however the more I hear these stories they more disgusted I get!!!

Right. We both know that Catalyst Control Panel doesn't have the display
and monitors options. I went through all that with HP when I had my chat session and so did my friend. Believe me. That's why I said I'd it's not a hardware issue than HP needs to work with AMD to get us a custom driver to enable that menu option.

PS: I have the non 3D version.

Spoke with my Case Manager again today about the Eyefinity issue. Still sounds like there is nothing coming soon for a fix on this. She says it is a new issue, to which I replied it is because it is a new laptop model that was untested......

I requested an extra year Warranty, 3 yrs accidental coverage, and a 2nd bay hard drive caddy with screws. She says she will call back Tuesday and tell me if this is acceptable or not. Man this is huge oversight on HP's part. It is a perfect laptop otherwise.

That was a good choice LT. I don't know about the parts store....but the xtra charger they sent me was listed at $89.00 on their site. I did some research and you could get it for $39.99 elsewhere. So actually as inflated as their "chit" is.....they aren't really doing you that big of a deal.
    Good luck

HP Envy 17 with AMD Radeon HD 7850m Overclocked The Force Unleashed 2 - YouTube
Here the first game I played with the AMD 7850m Overclocked. The Force Unleashed 2 on Max Settings. There is no V Sync Option so there is lots of Screen Tearing. The game is also locked at 30FPS.
800 Core Clock and 1200 Memory Clock. I get 30FPS the whole time... Probably not the game you wanna test Overclocked when the FPS is locked at 30FPS...

Okay so I bought a new HP Envy 17 2012 verison and I was wondering if I should buy a 240gb SSD or buy a 128 GB SSD and 16GB of ram? Comes out to about almost the same.

You should have got the original 750gb and then installed a SSD yourself same goes for the Ram.

My 1st envy had dead pixels and dirt inside of the screen.
My 2nd envy's touchpad would not click.
My 3rd envy is perfect. Glad they got it right this time.

I recieved this laptop yesterday afternoon. I unpacked it and plugged it in and when I hit the power button nothing happened. I called HP and they helped me hard reset the system and it came on. So i started installing all my software and left for work. When i returned I booted up WoW and started playing. 5mins into gameplay i got a BSOD error 0x00000116 and atikmpag.sys. So again i called HP and got some help with troubleshooting the issue. The first video driver I installed caused a BSOD with the same error. So I tried the previous version and it completed the installation. I shut down the laptop to install updates and when i went to turn it on it wouldnt boot up. I tried the hard reset (beats audio button and the power button for 30 secs) and nothing could get it to come on till this morning when i just tried it and it came on. Restored the system and reinstall all my software and again I tried WoW and got the BSOD. Im lost as to what to do. HP says I should return it for a new unit but NewEgg wont give a refund or a new system due to their policies. As far as Im concerned this system was DOA. Any thoughts or ideas to fix the current system or get NewEgg replace with a new unit and not a refurbished one. Currently in the Navy and leave for deployment soon and would like to have a working computer for my 11 months from home. Thank you in advance. Oh and the Video and BIOS driver I updated are:
    Video:
AMD High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver ►
    2012-04-26 , Version:8.951.9.1000, 309.22M
(This one cause the BSOD when installing)
AMD High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver ►
    2012-04-26 , Version:8.951.9.0, 154.38M
    (This one worked)

True, for the RAM. I could have saved some money on that. But the 300gb SSD is expensive anyway. And with the HP's 33% discount from the $510, there isn't much of a difference.

    Cheers,

Get the 240 GB SSD. Ram will keep dropping in price, and as long as you have 8mb...you are good for now...

I ordered the 750GB 7200 Hybrid. They wanted a little over $500 for the SSD option. Here's my problem with that. I don't know what brand SSD they are using. This was the main sticking point for me that lead me to "play it safe" with the 750GB HDD.

After I ordered my laptop, I researched and bought a Sandisk Extreme 480GB SSD for $350! More storage, much cheaper, and I know exactly what I'm getting. So, it's not a case of "should have". There's always options after the fact! (Except for the graphics card though!)

On a side note, just checked FedEx and my Envy is in Anchorage, Alaska! I'm scheduled to get it on the 30th but I may get it sooner. Who knows! I'm hoping and praying all is fine with it. Based on the wonderful information on this thread, here's what I'm going to check for:

    • Dead pixels. I have a white background image that I will load. It helped me discover a dead pixel in the first DV7-6195US I bought last year.
    • Framing around USB ports. Also, I will test each port to make sure it works.
    • Blu-ray player. I will play a Blu-ray and will burn a small data disk. Also, check to see if discs eject easily and without issues.
    • Sound. I will play different sound sources (disks, sound files, gaming sounds, removable media, etc.) to make sure the sound is good. I've read about instances of crackling and other items.
    • Keyboard. I will check the sturdiness of the keys. Also, I will be looking for evidence of loose or clicky keys.
    • Trackpad (although I will be using a mouse most of the time).
    • General build quality - I know some users have reported displays not snapped together tightly, uneven edges of the bottom and top meeting up, etc.).

Again, if there's anything that I missed, feel free to add to my "to do" list!

You have some testing to do before your 21 days (30 for Canada) are up for a refund/exchange.

    >Test your screen with PassMark MonitorTest: PassMark MonitorTest - Test monitors and LCD flat panel screens

    >Test your RAM with Memtest86+: Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
I do 1 stick at a time, over night for 10-12 Hrs. Do not send your notebook in if the ram fails, request that HP send it to you and include a prepaid envelope/waybill to send the defective ram back.

    >Test your dGPU with FurMark: FurMark: FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, Burn-in Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net

    > Test your dGPU VRAM with Video Memory Stress Test or Artifact Locator: HOME PAGE OF MISHA CHERKES

    > Test your CPU with Intel: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...&DwnldID=19792

    > Test your Blu-ray Drive with PassMark Optical Drive Test: PassMark Software - Optical Drive Test Media (CD, DVD and Blu-ray)
I put in a request and got my public library to purchase 3 sets, so I borrow it when needed.

    > Test your Seagate Momentus with Seagate Tools: SeaTools | Seagate

    > Test your Hitachi HDD with Drive Fitness Test: Downloads

    > Test your WiFi Card with VirtualWiFi Stress: VirtualWiFi Stress (Windows)
    > Test your WiFi Card withWireless Router Performance Test: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...1%28v=vs.85%29

Just don't 'TRUST' that your notebook will have all the different components working properly. Spend some time now to verify that your system board is stable, before you load all your programs in, it will save your time and grief later reinstalling your OS, browser, etc, or dealing with BSOD's etc.

FYI, there are a lot of good free testing software out there.

    Saved $803.22 through coupon

Estimated ship date: September 5, 2012

Looks like this model have plenty of known issues. Wish I came across this thread before I ordered. My primary purpose is to find an overall equipment both for personal and possibly home office that can get as close as possible to what the Macbook Pro Retina can do without having to spend more than $1,500. With the specs I mentioned above, the total price minus the discount came to $1,600. I wonder if I did the right thing.

    Anyone playing GW2 with this machine (3200 - non 3d - 8GB RAM)

I am getting strange lag spikes. Happens about every 45 mins ... and tends to get tied into the sound as well. Everything slows down for a good 30 seconds (including the sound) and then pops back to normal eventually .... I have switchable graphics set for the program to run on high performance (on the 7850) ... not sure what else can be causing the problem. A bit reluctant to try up grading my graphics drivers to beta ... but will give it a shot if you all think its worth it.

Any thoughts? just passed my 21 day marker ... so I need to find a solution myself if possible.

HP Envy 17 with AMD Radeon HD 7850m Overclocked Transformers Fall of Cybertron - YouTube
Here's Transformers Fall of Cybertron on the AMD 7850m Overclocked card. 800 Core and 1200 Memory. I get a smooth 60FPS and my temps were great. I was in the low 70s which is awesome after playing for a little over a hour. I love this game it's super fun and I don't regret buying it because it's not locked at 30FPS like other Transformers games in the past... Hope you enjoy...

Received my Envy today! After close inspection, no issues. Ran the diagnostics and passed with flying colors! I swapped out the 750GB HDD with my new Sandisk Extreme 480GB drive (SSD is now the boot drive, HDD is now storage) using the instructions and links provided by Maverick. (Ordered the caddy from NewmodeUS). Everything went well and I'm doing a system recovery now! Can't wait to get this back up and running and get some games installed. Currently I'm re-playing Half Life 2 Episode 1 (going old school for the first round! lol).

I'll report on how the SSD runs when all is well. Strange thing with my Envy is that it came with stickers attached. There an Intel and a Windows 7 sticker on the right hand side. No biggie...but I thought these things shipped "bare". lol...

Hmmm....installed the SSD as Maverick did. Rebooted the computer and did the recovery. Rebooted and all I get is:

"Press the ESC key for the Startup Menu"

When I hit ESC, I get:

    "ESC...Pause Startup"

After that second message hangs for a while, I get the original message Maverick stated about the book disk needing an operating system. If that's true, where did I restore to? I went through all 5 disks and it took a while!

I'm now doing a Factory Reset. I thought this is what I did the first time, but I think I selected a different option. I'm on Disk 4 now.

Also, the first time, I never saw the option to do a "minimal restore" of the software. It just loaded it all (I'm assuming!)

I can confirm that the first time I did a "System Recovery" rather than a "Factory Reset". I forgot that I took a pic during the first attempt.

    Here's some more developments.

The drive does not show up in the BIOS at all. The only boot device I have is the CD-ROM. It's like the drive doesn't exist at all.

I'm thinking I have a bad SSD. I don't know what to do from here other than return it. Unless, someone else has some thoughts on this.

I opened up the laptop and double checked the connections. Everything is correct. I ran the restore twice and it looks like it loaded (it sure took long enough) but when I reboot, I get the same "startup" error and then it tells me "Boot Device not Found". Since I have the SSD in the primary (I swapped it out) wouldn't the restore disk recover to that drive?

    This really sucks...

Ok, this is weird. I took out the SSD and put the original drive back. I boot up and now it's loading the software (the step after the OS reload). It seems that even though I swapped out the drives, it still reinstalled everything to the secondary HDD. The only thing I can think of here is that the SSD is bad (wasn't even detected by the BIOS). But if that is true, why was the original HDD not detected either? (I was only showing the CD-ROM as a boot device).

I'm done for tonight. After the software loads back onto the original drive, I'm going to bed!! Tomorrow is another day...

When I did it, I saw the minimal, but I did a factory restore, I wanted everything working w/o issues, and wanted the Antivirus and Adobe programs.

I dont get why to do a "Clean" it doesn't install "crap" programs like the toshiba I used to have.

Here's what's on the agenda today. I'm going to reinstall the SSD only in the primary bay. I guess I'll know immediately if the restore is going to work.

I don't understand why I can't see any of the drives in the BIOS. I only see the DVD-ROM as the only bootable device.

Maverick, if you're reading this, feel free to offer any thoughts!

Just chiming in here to say that I've received my final Envy. After going through a prebuilt, a lengthy wait for a CTO/return and compensation, I finally got it. Only about $1000 too! In perfect condition. Now if you'll excuse me...

You saved $803 on a build that costs $1600? That is over 50% off. Anybody know what coupon can get that deal?

    I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS!

I got home and reinstalled the Sandisk SSD and tried to restore to that drive only. It installed all five disks and rebooted and I got:

"A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

So, thinking the Sandisk drive was bad, I took it out, put in a BRAND NEW Intel 520 Series 180GB SSD. Went through the same recovery process again. Reinstalled all the software and booted into a fresh copy of Windows for the first time. Thinking all my troubles were over, I rebooted and guess what...I get.

"A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

There is NO WAY I have two bad SSDs! I am at a complete loss about what's going on here.

PLEASE....SOMEBODY OFFER SOME KIND OF HELP. Has anyone been through this? I'm not a novice but I'm at a loss. The boot order shows the hard drive as the "first device".

    HELP!

Here's my next step...putting the original drive back in and will attempt to make my recovery files again (I saw the hack for allowing you to do this again).

I'm thinking that my recovery disks are corrupt or something. How can the TWO DIFFERENT DISKS be bad. This is too much of a coincidence.

In the meantime, if anyone has any thoughts....it's really quiet in here lately!

I would do a clean install with a W7 disc, not sure if the recovery disc will set all the ssd related settings in the optimal manner. Pretty sure it restores from an image so there will be slight performance hits here and there as the image will be for a regular hard drive. Not a huge deal but if you're putting in an ssd might as well do it right.

Forget about using the recovery disks on your SSD. I've read many posts from you saying it does't work. Instead do what I did. Put the original HDD back in bay 1 and confirm everything boots up fine. Then get a cloning software like Acronis True Image 2012 and clone that drive to your SSD. it's the easiest way. If you don't have Acronis then just get it online and burn it to a CD. You also will need a drive enclosure. Maybe one of your SSD Drives came with one. It sucks that you can't use the recovery Disks like you wanted. PS. I think your Recovery Disks might have an error in them...

That's a good idea. I haven't tried that yet. I guess I'm scratching my head because Maverick was able to do this a while back with his Envy. He simply swapped the drives, recovered with the disks, and all is well. I'll need to backup the disk to an external drive? I have an WD Passport with a USB connector. Think that will do the trick? I'll definitely try this....

Maverick was able to do this. I might just have a corrupt set of recovery disks. I'll need to buy a copy of Windows 7 if I go this route. Will have to grab the drivers from HP's site as well. I'll have to give up the Adobe products. This isn't a deal breaker though!

You never know dude. It takes 5 CD'S to make the Recovery Disks and it just takes 1 bad CD to mess it up...

That is very true. It's the only common link between the two SSDs. I list the Acronis idea because I can keep the Adobe products. Can this process be done with a removable drive? As I mentioned, I have a WD Passport drive that connects via USB. I'm hoping that will do the trick for a place to save the image generated by Acronis.

I'm happy to see that you did this and were successful. By the way, I LOVE all the vids you posted for the gaming stuff. I can't wait to get this situation fixed so I can play Half Life 2 Episode 1 on the new machine!
