I have one on order so I'll confirm if its the right caddy once my Envy arrives. I should have both the caddy and SSD in the mail before the laptop.

will the 7850M be able to run civ 5 1080p, highest settings?
-
To them, these cards are the only ones that can do it:
AMD Radeon HD 7970M Crossfire
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M*
AMD Radeon HD 7970M
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M SLI
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M SLI
AMD Radeon HD 6990M Crossfire
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 485M SLI
AMD Radeon HD 6970M Crossfire
AMD Radeon HD 7950M -

If the 7970M is even in the cards for you then you should not be looking at an Envy. Even the Envy 17 is not a huge brick of a laptop like the top-tier gaming laptops (Sager/Clevo/Alienware/etc). You have to add a considerable amount of space and weight for fans and additional heating to pack in a GPU that strong, and the Envy line has never, ever done that. Closest they came was probably the 5850 in the 2nd-gen Envy.

Has anyone tried ordering with an HP preferred account with the 33% off and trying to get a 360 thrown in?
Or at least free 2day shipping at the very least
Sent from my SGH-i917 Windows Phone using Board Express -
i got free 2 day shipping, just ask politely. It was added on my total bill but will get refunded afterwards.
can't wait for my Envy 17!

Xbox?...

Really would be smart for Microsoft to allow it on top of any other savings. They'd move more units of 360s and they don't make that much on the systems anyways. It all comes from live subscriptions and games/accessories. -

I've been trying to find these in a retail store but my local Best Buy and Fry's don't have these on display. So far I've only seen the 14" Spectre and I hated the keyboard. Hope the Envy 15 isn't like this.

Oops I meant to post this in the Envy 15" thread lol

Being that I only play 3 games, 2 of which are MMO's which generally aren't too demanding, and the fact that I don't plan on playing any other future games, I think that getting a much cheaper system with decent graphics should be fine for the 2-3 years I plan to keep it. Plus, I can take this with me to school and not have to lug around a behemoth like the m17x. Carrying this system will be heavy sure but at least it's very similar in weight and size to a MBP 17"
Edit: And I should have mentioned that I really like HP's Return Policy. When I receive the system and find out that it's not what I was expecting/hoping for, I can at least return it after 21-days without worrying about shipping or restocking fees unlike stupid Dell. A 15% restocking fee on an nearly $2k system? No bueno. If this system doesn't workout, then I will just reorder the alienware and hopefully get the same or even cheaper price.
However, I did use a Preferred Account and got an additional $40 off. And furthermore, if you go through FatWallet first, I believe you should be able to get 5% back.
Unfortunately, I was not able to get the Free 2-day shipping but that's where I got the $40 off instead. -
It's only 3% on Fatwallet. Use Mrrebates instead, which is 7%.
HP Cashback 7% - Compare HP Home & Home Office Store Cash Back Rebate Rates
Store Search - Mr. Rebates
When I ordered earlier this week, Fatwallet was the highest cash back % for shopping at HP.com, but MrRebates has clearly upped the offer. I have not personally used them before, so I don't know how reputable they are. -

Basically, you click on a link on their site that takes you to HP's website but embedded in the link is a referral code that shows which website you were "referred" by. So long as you complete the buying process without closing your browser or going to another link then coming back, you should be able to get credit eventually from that website.
They will not record any of your personal finance information; however, you will need to register on that website which may ask for your address as they might send payment as a check. -
My Envy 17 is now "in production" and the 256gb Crucial M4 SSD dropped from $200 to $180 now on both Amazon on Newegg! I got a $20 refund from Amazon due to the price drop.
Not a bad way to start the day. -
Mine is "in production" too. But I didn't get the 2 day shipping so I'm sure I won't be first to get mine.

Here is a link to the caddy for the envy:
Hard Drive Caddy & Cable for HP Envy 17 -3000 series (3xxx) [HP-ENVY-17-3000] - $27.95 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks
Some people say to just use super strong tape, since an ssd doesn't have to be as secure as a platter drive. -

Does anyone know the best way to do a minimal install onto an SSD?
Once I get my Envy 17, I'm going to install my own SSD.
Are both HDD bays SATA III? The previous generation at bay 1 as SATA III and bay 2 as SATA II. If that's the case, I'm going to move the 750gb drive into bay 2 and install the SSD into bay 1.
Can I do a minimal restore and specify the SSD as the place to do the install or will I need to create a recovery disk?
And if I need to create a recovery disk, will it let me do that to an external HDD instead of DVD's since the new Envy 17's only have usb 3.0 ports?
Can the recovery disks be burned to single layer DVD's? It seems dumb that dual layer DVD's are still pretty expensive. -
i should have my envy 15 by next friday.. hopefully :S

When does the 33% coupon expire?!... Thanks in advance
Not sure why I'm waiting since I have the cash, prolly to see at least 1 review of the refresh.
Sent from my SGH-i917 Windows Phone using Board Express -
There's no guarantee how long they'll keep doing this, but if you have the money and the desire to get one, there's no point in waiting.
If you want to wait, there's quite a few people that have ordered one on this forum and will be posting reviews and impressions once it arrives. The earliest would be next Friday. Mine is set to ship on the 13th with 2 day shipping. -
Quick question does the new envy 17 have VGA ports? The lack of VGA ports on my envy 14 always bothered me.
Screen died on my envy 14 so thank goodness for squaretrade warranty. Just pulled the trigger on one of these bad boys last night, however, I didn't think to check if it had VGA ports though.
Worst part is 6 days ago I ordered the new DV7T before they refreshed the envy with ivy bridge processors and the new GPU. So now I have to wait for the DV7T to be delivered so I can RMA it.
I'm so happy they refreshed the envy when they did because my favorite part of my envy 14 was the display. -

Just pulled the trigger today. I sent my dv7t-7000 back and got an envy. It was only $20 more for a similar configuration due to fatwallet having 5% cashback instead of 3%, it would have been even if i used mr. rebates, which was 7%. I didn't use a rebate site before. Pretty excited, I am hoping the 7850m is better than the 650m like everyone says.
My configuration:
Envy17
• 3rd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3820QM Processor (2.7 GHz, 8MB L3 Cache)
• Radeon(TM) HD 7850M Graphics 1GB GDDR5 Memory [HDMI, DP]
• 6GB 1600MHz DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
• 750G 7200 rpm Hybrid Hard Drive
• 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery - Up to 5.25 hours of battery life +++
• 17.3-inch diagonal Radiance Full HD Infinity LED-backlit Display (1920x1080)
• Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
• 720p HD video streaming webcam supports Skype
• Intel 802.11a/b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth(R) with Wireless Display Support
• Full-size Radiance backlit keyboard
edit: Do you guys think they are going to put in the i7-3840qm in these? I just read that it was the replacement for the 3820qm. -

Hopefully This refresh turns out to be great. Once I received my DV7 I didnt even open the box, same day RMA haha
-
That's my plan as well assuming the Envy doesn't ship first. I doubt it will. The DV7 is supposed to ship on the 6/11 and the Envy on 6/14. I'm sure HP is getting a lot DV7s back now that they refreshed the Envy 17.

Alright, Imma buy one tonight, kinda nervous don't really like being the first person buy new tech, specially the amd gpu. That 33% off made me lol, too tempting.
-
Don't worry about being an early adopter. The nice thing about HP is that you can return it without any restocking fee if you don't like it. They don't exactly make it easy, but compared to returning a Dell its a walk in the park.
