I'm in the process of getting a new laptop and I'm considering this one. Is this Eyefinity problem something that just affects gaming or will this limit multiple monitors in general? I want support for two external monitors in addition to the laptop screen. Also I don't want or need 3D so I'm specifically addressing the 2D version. This is a weird problem AMD says the chip supports Eyefinity why doesn't this laptop?

HP Envy 17 with AMD Radeon HD 7850m Overclocked Borderlands 2 - YouTube
Here's a new video of Borderlands 2 on High Settings with an Overclocked AMD 7850m. I deleted the other video because the performance was wrong. On High Settings you can expect around 40-60FPS. Game plays perfect and It's quite fun... I hope you enjoy and sorry about the mix up... -

There is lots of reviews on Walmart. Some of them say they have a 17in laptop and it fits fine... -
anyone has the full weight of the laptop?
laptop with ac adapter? the hp specs list it as 7.37 pounds. since the battery cant be easily removed, i assume that includes the battery. but what about the ac adapter?
my previous 17" weighed 17.6 pounds with ac adapter and backpack (thin), laptop with battery and ac adapter weighed 12.2 pounds. -
.
---------------------------------
I just realized that we are talking about backpacks. he should be fine with the 16 in. I was thinking of my 15in sleeve which is a snug fit for the envy. -
Is that for all types of products on the HP website or just HP brand stuff? I have one for $125 and they did not tell me up front that it only works for HP brand stuff.....
-
Can anybody link me to the touchpad settings file for this laptop? Using it alot more often and definitely would like to try em out

Laptop LCD + 1 External LCD works
2 External LCD + Laptop LCD off works
Laptop LCD + 2 External does not work
3 external + Laptop LCD off does not work
On a side note, thanks for all the videos. I was curious how BL2 ran. You're doing the Envy community a great service. -
PS. thanks again... -

Was it two external monitors using active adapters? There has to be at least one active adapter for it to work as far as I know, due to the way the signal is. Imagine it as a desktop card, can only output to two traditional monitors(HDMI/DVI) at once, if you wanted a third monitor off that card you would have to use an active displayport adapter or have a displayport monitor, passive will not work.
Looking at the laptop it should be about the same, one HDMI/DVI type connection which would be the internal display and one external, at that point you need an active adapter. Assuming it follows the same scheme as desktop cards, which it should. Barring any funky things HP may have done to the design.
It's all due to cards only being able to output two signals at the clock HDMI/DVI can use, displayport does not have this limitation but you need to use an active adapter to take advantage of that. -
Again 2 external LCD's without the laptop LCD works. 2 external LCD's with the laptop LCD on does not.
Please prove me wrong as I'd love for this to work. -
reposting my question.
anyone knows how much the laptop weighs with the ac adapter? I know the laptop weights 7.7 pounds and I am pretty sure it includes the battery weight since it's not easily removable.
another thing is, I am considering dropping the quad core for the dual core version but is it going to be significantly cooler under normal tasks like web surfing, youtube, basically non-gaming uses. -
-
. I dont think it makes that much of a difference in heat since u wouldnt be stressing cpu at all with normal office work tasks. in fact the quadcore might be cooler cause they idle at lower clocks
-
That post is certainly in this thread or in owners thread, unfortunately they are too big to manage to find it. -
I've been following this thread since the end of July as I am interested in purchasing this laptop too (the non 3d, 3270NR).
I just created this account because I also want to participate in the current discussion.
About a month ago I ordered this model from a third party that flaked on its delivery. So I still don't have the computer and am waiting for my refund (long and grueling process, should've went with piece of mind by going with a reputable merchant).
The only thing I was interested in was the multiple monitor setup that AMD had to offer, and the HP website apparently falsely promised to deliver. This is an important feature that my studies and potential line of work will greatly require. Buying a desktop pc doesn't seem practical since there are plenty of desktop replacement around to choose from (many with nvidia GPUs that I'm not sure function with multiple monitors, **but please let me know if there are models that do**).
Getting down to the point here, I bookmarked some pages with pertinent info regarding the 3270NR or the CTO version. There were plenty of mixed reviews that claim running up to 3 monitors wouldn't work, and claiming that only a maximum of 2 displays can run. On page 225 of this thread, there was a back to back post between DruFaith and monty87 about how to connect the laptop:
I can only vouch for my experience on the NON 3D VERSION pertaining to the monitor issue. You CAN run 2 external monitors. The only way I was to get 2 monitors to work is when they were in the 2 display ports on adapters (active is all I had to work with). The adapters were for a DVI and VGA. 2 DVI's or 2 VGA's "may work" but I did not have the ability to check with 2 of the same. When I used a straight hdmi hook up or an HDMI to DP adapter with NO OTHER CONNECTION that worked. I DID NOT test 2 HDMI hook ups at once.
I am not a gamer so can't help you out on that end of it.
I currently have the NON 3D version of Envy 17 32xx. I am using to run 3 external monitors successfully. I have not tried eyefinity gaming, but I do have my desktop extended to 2 other monitors. I have also played few games successfully using the switchable graphics option in CCC on my main monitor while the other 2 monitors were active. Here is my setup. The key is that the displayport to dvi/vga adapter must be an active adapter and not a passive adapter.
Displayport 1 -> HP ZR24w Direct display port connection
Displayport 2 -> Cintiq 21ux Display port to DVI using ACTIVE displaport port adapter
HDMI -> HP l2335 HDMI to dvi cable.
Now if I turn on/open my envy17 screen, then the HDMI monitor will disconnect. But either way I am able to run 3 monitors. Before I got an active displayport adapter, I used a passive adapter that I had, and I could only 2 monitors to connect.
Anybody else go through the trial and error phase with this setup? I wanted to achieve this by purchasing a whole bunch of cables (and returning them if they didn't work) along with the laptop (that I never got).
I will maybe order the laptop again in October if I hear some good news on the matter.
Thanks to everyone that participated here so far. -

12.9beta drivers out. they apparently got switchable gfx in it so we wont be needing hp's drivers in theory. Ima uninstall my hp drivers+12.7b and try to install this ill report back.

well i successfully uninstalled 12.7beta. I tried to uninstall the hp drivers but when i did that, it deleted the radeon card. when i tried installing 12.9 it didn't detect the card. when i refreshed it in device manager, it reinstalled the older hp drivers with the card. not finding a way around it i installed the newer hp drivers and then installed 12.9b. not much options changed besides adding a video acceleration option, an actual list of apps and which card they use. and ability to change graphics options (like vsync aa/af triple buffering) for specific apps (I dont remember if older ones were like this).
I havent tested for improved performance yet, ill try it out later when i got time. ill do a 3dmark11 run and bf3 run when i do -
thanks
if so, it's alot lighter than thinkpad w700 which i returned it after the seller blatantly lied about the status.
to me, as long as it has a 17" screen, build quality, warranty, lighter than the w700, it's good for me. Whether it has gtx660 or 690m or has speakers that can create a new tectonic faultline is not important to me. -

boosted over 3000 plateau with the new beta drivers. Scored 3041 3dmarks with an overclock of 825mhz core and 1300 mem
-
3091 running at 855mhz core and 1300mhz mem. but it's not stable for gaming tho.
-
I have not dared push past 1300 mem clock yet. No issues or artifacts yet, just seems like a crazy OC for memory. Especially with no good temp monitoring for memory chips.
