AU4U, Lots of good tips & thanks for responding to many different questions across the thread. Good advice on the SLC vs MLC...

Regarding "why do the RAID 0 across 3 SSDs if only 7% gain" ?

Because my buddy can... He is our DBA and only sleeps about 3-4 hrs naturally and is a FPS & PVP-MMO maniac and tunes for speed. RAID 0 is pure stipe-ing so there is no parity calculations or what not to worry about. If the RAID 0 controller can talk faster than the SATA bottleneck and the SATA3 channel is faster than the 3 SSDs can handle then the gains could be up to 300%. That being said I don't know the bottlenecks and what gain he is getting over a single SSD...

Our DBA/Gamer couldn't care less regarding loss of data on his gaming rig... It is a pure minimal load out of just Win7 Pro and the games and nothing else... He turns off every un-needed service & overclocks everything and the only business software on it is the Citrix receiver to allow him to get his Outlook & such from our office servers... Every non-game need and all his data is in our internal cloud or his personal iSCSI & Network shared NAS so he doesn't care... That being said I did configure both Windows & NTI backups for him that run regularly when he isn't gaming on the system.

After seeing the DBA's Alienware m18 SLI config with 32GB RAM & 3 SSDs in RAID 0 our boss now wants me to do a 64-128GB RAM desktop system so he can put everything in a RAM disk just to kill both of us... When he doesn't want to use it I can reboot for our development/POC VMs so win/win...

As for me, I like trying to get the most bang for the buck and give something speedy to all our users which is why I am focusing on the Intel SRT & DataPlex options as we can afford that to many people internally (unlike our DBA & boss)...

I also like that my HP Envy system will end up costing 20-33% of his and have quite a bit of punch and be much more practical and portable... Hopefully my Momentus HDD with a single SDD Cache will have very good performance for the stuff I care about but give me more storage at a cost effective manner... We also do MMOs together so I am hoping to both show him up 3D and I hope I can push the MMOs over 60 frames per second to show him the benefits of 2D over a 120Hz monitor... His system will still kick mine to hell and back in many areas (I don't do FPS so I don't care) but there will be some things I can do that he can't and that is cool enough for me...

SSD's in RAID make a huge difference. I ran two 256gb Crucial M4's in my desktop (gaming rig) and the speed is amazing. After post the boot time is under 6 seconds, and applications load quicker than they did with just one SSD. Game loading times are also improved slightly. I'm usually the first one loaded into a BF3 map when the server switches maps.

in terms of size: the thickeness of the 17' over the 15' isnt that much correct? Also, an education guess, how much battery life (normal usage) do you think the envy 17' will have, considering all the new thats out now?

1.11 vs 1.28 inches. That's definitely enough to notice, but not much of a difference in actual use.

The Envy 15 gets way better battery life with it's 8 cell battery versus the 6 cell in the 17.

I'm expecting 5 hours tops for web browsing on the 17.

I'm jealous mine says still in production. I don't know what the deal is they had the DV7 I ordered on 5/31/2012 in my hands the day of the estimated ship date. It had close to the same exact specs aside from the video card and screen of course. In fact its already on its way back to HP I'm willing to bet they get the DV7 back before my Envy even ships.

Just speculation but maybe it's probably because I called them up while it was in production and asked to cancel the order and they thought if they got it to me super fast I would keep and think HP was the best company ever for under promising and over delivering. Maybe I should call and try and cancel this order too just to see if that speeds things up.

ur in a bad batch this discussion is being made in the envy 15 thread. mine also i slike that :(

    ------
so i was just browsing around for performance benchmarks for 7850m/7750m and I came upon the fact that the 7850m is supposed to be equal to desktop 7750 in performance... comparing the 3dmark11 score the 7750 (7850m) surpasses the gtx 660m score and is close to the 570m score. so there should be no worry that it cant tie 660m :D.... now if i could only find info on the 7750m :(

It might be a 9-cell battery, the service manual has the battery listed as 9-cell, contacted them for clarification earlier today.

    (16) Battery (9-cell, 91-Wh, 4.1-Ah, Li-ion) 657503-00

compared to the Envy 15 manual

    (20) 8-cell, 72-Wh, 2.45-Ah, Li-ion battery 660152-00

That would make more sense I didn't think the Envy 15 would come with a bigger battery than the larger laptop with more room inside. Hopefully this is true.

I am getting mad now. Placed order on the 3rd, said the 12th for est shipping. Called hp and they had no info. I am ready to cancel, it's bs when you order the same thing as other people and they get shipping info 3-4 days prior and they ordered 1-2 days later.

I agree, I would be mega pissed as well. What was your system configuration? Perhaps there is one spec that was different that's holding yours up? If it's the same as mine and the others' who have already shipped, I'd raise hell to HP and at the very least demand a discount.

If that were the case then it's a pretty bad way of dealing with the problem. They should just upgrade to 1600mhz as cost difference is negligible.

Well, it's either a 9 cell battery or a 2nd HDD bay. I'll take the 2nd HDD bay.

My Envy 17 just arrived! It's still in the box until I get home from work to shoot the unboxing video and comparison with the DV7T.

Good point. I might just open it now and just do a product tour.

Edit: It's open! Did a quick inspection, no bent usb ports (I noticed this was an issue on previous generations) or anything. No cosmetic defects. It looks AMAZING compared to the DV7. Not to say the DV7 wasn't nice, but the Envy 17 is on a different level.

I'm going to burn the recovery DVD's during lunch and install the benchmarks. I've got 3DMark11, 3DMark06, and PCMark Vantage (gaming suite) benchmarks. Any other's you guys are curious to see?

Rex-i7, if you want a video tutorial of installing a SSD into the empty hard drive slot, you can check this one out. It's pretty thorough. He demonstrates with an Envy17-3000 instead of our 3200's, but the process is pretty much identical.

Oh, what about missing keystrokes, that was an issue on previous one. I think it was when you run on battery power.

I'm also expecting mine on the 14th as well. But when i checked the tracking info, it showed "on FedEx vehicle for delivery" this morning. Usually FedEx arrives from 10-11am so it should be at home any minute now. Mav's first impression making me really excited!

Thanks for the youtube link, i'll check it out later.

look at the envy 15 thread for 7750m benchmarks. it is on par with the 650m, with OC i can see it going at 660m/570m. the 7850m should start out at 660m and increase from there with OC
