Well just got my Envy 17 and there is something really wrong here. The thing runs incredibly slow, like Pentium-M slow I assume there is something wrong with the HD.

Ok thanks, I'll check out that thread. But the Envy 17's have the 7850M, so I'm looking forward to direct numbers instead of a relative assessment.

Is overclocking unlocked on these laptops? What's the risk of damaging or shortening the useful life of the chip if you run it faster/hotter?

ghat: yeah well i was just trying to help :p ppl should be getting the 17 soon so there should be benchmarks in no time.. oc should be possible as soon as the oc utilities support the cards.

Hmmm, that sucks, Chainspell. I also ordered the 750gb Hybrid drive, but mine's not arriving until tomorrow.

Maybe we can help figure out what's wrong. Can you post a video on Youtube to show us what you mean by running incredibly slow? When does it bog down?

Talking to HP right now, and I think they determined it to be some sort of Software error. Here is the list of problems associated with this machine:

-will not boot into Windows 7 sometimes
-sound distortion when it does boot
-incredibly slow performance when it does boot

The HP rep connected to my laptop from the internet and she suggest that I return this system. I am going to assume I manage to buy a dud.

3DMark 11 results are in! It's the only benchmark I was able to run before heading back to work. This is fresh out of the box. I haven't updated anything or touched any settings.

Those of you hoping for 660M performance got your wish. :D

    Notebookcheck scores:
    660m
    Overall: 2586
    GPU: 2293

    650m
    Overall: 2288
    GPU: 2072

For reference, my DV7T scored near the 2300 mark with identical specs to my Envy 17.

As a side note, if you plan on making recovery disks, you'll need to allocate quite a bit of time. I only had time to complete the first recovery disk during lunch. It took about 20 minutes to burn. I still have 4 more to go. The software verifies the disk before it finishes, so that adds time to the process.

No. It's a glitch with 3DMark. My DV7T said the same thing. If the Intel 4000 performed that well, they just turned the mobile graphics world upside down. :p

I just signed up to join in the conversation. I ordered mine on 6/7/12 and my scheduled shipping date is 6/26/12 :(. I'd love to see when you install your ssd Maverick777, as I have a brand new one sitting here waiting. Is the only caddy available from Newmodus?

I can't tell you for certain until I run Diablo 3 tonight, but the benchmark indicates it should perform as well as a Nvidia 660m. My DV7T has a 650m (lower end card than the 660m) and it runs Diablo 3 at 1080p between 40-60 FPS. The 7850m should do even better!

You can also get a general ballpark idea of what your FPS will be like for games from this page:

Computer Games on Laptop Graphic Cards - Notebookcheck.net Tech

Seems like the 7850M is about on par with the Nvidia 660M (at least, judging from 3DMark11), so it should be able to run pretty much all games smoothly on high settings, which typically means 720p with some anti-aliasing. 1080p gaming at the native resolution will probably chug a bit for many games though.

    Specs:
    • 3rd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3610QM Processor (2.3 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache)
    • Radeon(TM) HD 7850M Graphics 1GB GDDR5 Memory [HDMI, DP]
    • 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 750G 7200 rpm Hybrid Hard Drive
(this will be replaced by a 256gb Crucial M4 tonight)
    • Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
I got the caddy from Newmodeus and as far as I know they are the only ones that have it other than HP. It "should" fit, but I'll find out for sure tonight. I have a 256gb Crucial M4 sitting on my desk ready to go. The longest part of the process will be burning the remain 4 recovery DVD's. I'm estimating that to take a full hour since the first disk took about 15-20 minutes.

Nice. That's pretty much the same config I got, except I only have 6gb of 1600mhz RAM.
I just bought Battlefield 3 (on sale for $27 from gamefly), so I'm looking forward to some 64-player matches this weekend!

How is the heat issue with the new Envy 17's?

I haven't had enough time to thoroughly test how the Envy 17 handles heat. However, during the 3Dmark 11 test, it only got mildly warm. More importantly for gamers, it only gets warm near the "IOP" keys and near the top center near the screen. This is far away from the WASD keys. The right palm rest also gets a little warm since that's where the hard drive is.

I think it was smart for HP to put the optical drive on the left side and shifting the heat generating parts to the right. This greatly benefits anyone who plans to game on it since it keeps the left palm rest cool and heat away from the important keys.

I put it to the test maybe late tonight or tomorrow with some lengthy sessions of Diablo 3.

When you did the performance of the 2.3GHz, how can you use the Turbo boost? Or is it something that kicks in automatically when gaming, etc.?

Looks to be pretty dang close to 50%. Not bad at all.

Will be canceling this order, if I am going to wait that long, might as well get the new Macbook Pro. How do you miss the shipping date by 2 full weeks.

Sure, you can go to this thread for details about the sale. There's a 10% off coupon " SLICK0611" for digitally distributed PC games from EA Origin, so BF3 ends up being $26.99 with no tax for most states.

My Envy 17 is coming in tomorrow (hopefully). Add me on Origin. My Origin ID is "gnatmonkee"

Any body know how hot the new 17s will get because mine hasn't even shipped or arrived and I'm already steaming after getting off the phone with HP about my delayed order! They won't apply the
"we're sorry" 15% off coupon to my order and wont let me stack it on a new order making absolutely a worthless joke as they always have coupons floating around for much higher than 15%.

Turbo boost kicks in automatically. Though you'll rarely actually see the top clock speed in real life. The reason being the poor cooling and limited power in a laptop versus a desktop. The processor measures its own power consumption and temperature to keep itself within it's design limitations. It also depends on the software you are running, single- versus multi-threaded applications.

If you want to watch/monitor it yourself when your envy arrives Intel provides an application to do this

I had the same problem, about 5 times!!! i've been trying to order this PC for 8 days or more. I spoke with someone yet again today and supposedly everything is back on track. I'm just waiting on update information, 24-48hrs... If this doesnt work, I wash my hands of HP permanently. These guys suck when it comes to the ordering process.
