You should keep your original hacked up one, I'm sure it's very Mad Max ;)

It's far too early for HP to be announcing any new models, unless you count the Beats edition. As for discounts, i've not seen any but since I bought my Envy i've stopped looking, so one may of slipped past me.

I wouldn't hold out much hope on finding a decent discount anytime soon

    Im liking it
Im sure compared to the Radiance screen people will say it's "ok" but compared to the screen I had on my Inspiron 1520 it is very, very good. It's vibrant, has good viewing angles (both up and down and left to right) and is just nice to use.

Having a further 220 odd pixels in either direction would be handy but (personally) im noticing that it is mattering less and less

Thank you. That makes me feel better about having no option to get the radiance display. I will be upgrading from a 3+ year old Toshiba A200 with 1280x800 screen, so im hoping it will fee like a proper upgrade...

Have any UK owners been successful in acquiring a 6-Cell Slice Battery for the Envy 14? I bought my Envy 14 recently from PC World but cannot find the battery for sale anywhere over here.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Got one from them just a few days ago. I bought it to replace my Samsung NC10 as now I need a portable laptop to be used daily a lot of times and not a netbook that I only use during trips.

I am not really entranced by the laptop, but it will do :)

P.S. Looking at the above sentence over and over I think I must be getting old if I can accept a laptop/ gadget that is not 100% suited to my needs, too much hassle looking for something else ;)

    Hi Guys,

I'm hoping to get the Envy 14 from Hidevolution, I was wondering if anyone has ordered from them?

It will have the radiance screen, 6gb of ram, the 450 processor, and 500gb hard drive. With postage and handling (I haven't added VAT, because it seems that its hit and miss on what people have to pay, between 70 quid to xxxx) it comes to 1001 pounds.

Another question, do you think it will be possible to update to the new sandy bridge i5 processors given that they are 22nm? If not, will i be able to upgrade the 450 to the 520 myself?

    Thanks!

    Jarek

    Congrats on your purchase man
    Feels good no?
If your usage is anything like mine, then not having the Radiance screen won't feel like the biggest blow in the world. It'll hurt a lil' bit but it shouldn't ruin your Envy experience

I just saw the HIDevolution thing... It seems like a good route to take, but I'm still unsure about cancelling my order for the radiance screen. Im really only not convinced because even with the radiance screen, it still turns out cheaper to import lol

EDIT: HP have rejected my order AGAIN! thats it im buying one from germany and hopefully change the keyboard later!

Quick question - has anyone had much experience with HP support in the UK? I've just had my Envy 14 (which was purchased in the US) picked up to be serviced by HP UK (left speaker DOA) and it has all been, dare I say it, a rather good and efficient experience so far, no hiccups.

I guess the real problems could start when I get my Envy back after they've taken it apart to fit a working speaker so I really don't want to tempt fate...

    Sorry guys n00b questions here...

Does the UK Envy 14-1050EA have switchable GFX (onboard and 5650) and how does it switch between options....Fn+F* key or is it automatic only?

What sort of battery life are people getting when using the onboard GFX and WiFi only?

Do Currys/PC World actually stock this model in the shop as i'm like to go and have a look at it before making a purchase online?

    Thanks.

If it has the i3 or i5 CPU then it has switchable graphics.

You can adjust how the graphics are switched to your liking:

You either have to do it manual by:
-Rightmouse click on desktop > Switchable graphics > switch
-A custom shortcut which you can choose yourself (for me Alt+I for Intel , Alt+A for ATI
-Or you can do it automatically by switching to the Intel graphics when you are running on battery and switching to ATI when on net.

With all these three options a pop up will show up, and you still have to click 'switch' with your mouse to actually switch the graphics card.

About the batterylife: When on Wifi and Intel GPU with some light browsing you'll get around 4 hours of juice.

    Thank you. :)

Its the i5 i'm looking at:- HP Laptops - HP Envy 14-1050ea Entertainment Laptop PC

2yr warranty offer expires Thursday 14th Oct. :(

I'm also considering the Alienware M11x with the lower spec CPU, i know its not a direct competitor as its got a smaller screen but i'm after a switchable GFX solution to have the best of both worlds and both the Envy and M11x have decent GFX cards!

ALIENWARE M11x buy online | Currys

I'm hoping Currys, PC World or some other chain of shops have either or both of these in so i can have a look at them in the flesh before buying.

Just got hold of an Envy 14.

I bought it from Dixons in Gatwick , only £850 and you can take it back to any highstreet shop. It was 999 with an 'airport discount' of 150.

This is my first laptop and i love the styling but it's noisier than I had hoped because i can hear then fan going and the trackpad gestures dont seem very good compared to a mac, although i'll try some of the software on the other thread which is meant to improve things.

I was initially put off buying it without the radiance but for £850 i thought i could live with it. The screen is still pretty good in terms of brightness etc...

I was told today that HP will no longer sell the Envy 14 direct, or at least for the moment. Only the beats version.

On the other hand, we're waiting for a new model to enter the channel, the HP Envy 14-1190EA

Could be that my informant was wrong, looks like the new 1100 series will be available direct although I just added one to my shopping basket and it wouldn't let me so I assume they are still working on the site.

However it looks as if the UK Envy 14 has been upgraded!

UPDATE: Back to not being available direct. Hmmm... at the moment, where does one get hands on an Envy 14?

I'm not bothering now. There's no point, its a let down imho. I saw one in a shop and was decidedly 'meh' about it. It's ok, but its not as glam as the envy 13. They've taken a step backwards.

I compared the Envy 14 to a few other laptops and cannot say it is crap. The people who I talked to and compared the laptops with said the 14 was nicer than their machines.

Looks wise, the E13 and the E14 are pretty similar, no? E14 has the subtle etched pattern on the case tho'. Similar screens. E14 has backlit keyboard.

    E14 has HD 5650, i3/i5/i7s. Good improvements, I reckon.

I agree, I actually saw the whole Envy range standing side by side in a store in Switserland the other day. You can clearly see that the Envy 14 and 17 are of a newer generation. The 15 and 13 both lacked the backlit keyboard as Joe already stated. They also had two rubber feet on the palmrest to keep the screen from touching the keyboard where the Envy 14 has a rubber edge around the screen, which looks much more neat.

The way I see it, currently in the UK the Envy 14 is everything they have learnt about the 13, 15 and 17 rolled into the 14. It has many improvements over the other models and so far seems to be the most reliable out of all of them.

Looks like the UK is getting the 14-1190 soon! It's now available for order on UK HP website but not through the store site yet, probably wont hit shops till end of the month.

I learned to like my E14 (took me some time getting used to the small screen as I am using a 25.5" HP TouchSmart as my main PC) and just checked the 1190 and do not really see any difference apart from the CPU, which is just a bit faster than the i5-450.

Do you see any differences there?

Yes, faster CPU and memory is single channel making it I suppose cheaper to go to 8GB if the user wishes to upgrade. I would expect there are some minor changes internally too, there always is - but we'll never know.

I've just placed an order for the new Envy 14 actually, but it's apparently stuck in the system. Amazing. I have a HP ProBook at the moment but the Envy is a nicer looking machine for sure.

With regards to screens I'm disappointed the Radiance display is no longer available. Smaller screens don't bother me so much, but the quality and resolution does. I have a 27" Viewsonic but I'll go as far as saying a good quality 24" IPS is better for me. Size may not be everything, but quality sure is.

I do not like the BrightView screen either, it is crap colour-wise and resolution-wise.

Upgrading to 8GB is a cheaper option with 1 channel, but makes performance worse than on dual channel.

That is true. To be fair it's better than most laptops so it's still a cut above the rest, but yes the Radiance is so much better.

What is really annoying me now is the fact HP are absolutely useless at actually taking orders. Each order I have sent through on the website get's stuck in their system with no explanation.

I ordered my first HP laptop, the HDX 20 from them 2 years ago and at that time my order got stuck only because I put the postcode in lower case letters instead of upper case. When I got that fixed I had no problems later on.

When I ordered my Envy last month I ordered it from PCWorld as they guaranteed faster delivery.

Uh Oh, obviously not the only one that's had problems with the HP store then. I've been on the phone to them multiple times today because the order has been 'stuck'. They admit there is a problem but asked me to wait, then cancelled the order and asked me to retry. Same issue and this is on the 3rd attempt and now HP customer services asked me to wait till Monday to see if it goes thru, meanwhile they are selling out of the new Envy 14 (lead time is now 2 weeks). I find it laughable that HP Store has such a poor ordering system!

PC world only sell the older model and it's a bit more expensive, QUIDCO + HP is a good deal but I have a strong suspicion that is why the orders are not going through.

Other than that looking forward to the Envy, I've seen them over in the states but at the time I wasn't in the market for a laptop so didn't pick one up..
