Bump - my laptop has been with the HP UK repair centre over a week now. Crossing my fingers I get it back with the issue fixed and no new problems. Getting a bit worried though after reading some horror stories regarding HP repairs in other threads.

Most horror stories are regarding the US repair centre in Texas. Let's hope the guys in the UK do a better job ;)

Quidco are doing 10% off all purchases and 8% cashback at HP, so have just ordered my 1190ea for £899.10 :D

HP says 2 weeks until delivery, I just hope the site is fixed today and the order went through properly!

Just wondering how do these discount webistes like Quidco and Sososher cashback work? I called HP 2 days ago and the woman said that for a student discount my university had to redirect me to a website. Doesn't make much sense but anyway help please?

By the way is yours coming with the 1600*900 display? :)

1600*900 is not available from HP UK. You can order one like that from ebay from the US.

    No 1600*900 for me :(

Basically, you sign up to Quidco. You then use the link from their website, it tracks the purchase you made. You can see the purchase almost instantly, but most websites don't actually pay Quidco for a couple of months. Once Quidco have received the payment, you can have them pay it into your bank account. In the case of the above offer, you also get a code for 10% off, which you enter on the HP site when you check out, and it gives you 10% off the purchase immediately.

Unfortunateley I know nothing about student discounts, but I think it probably won't be as much as the 18% total you get off from Quidco!

I am not affiliated with Quidco in any way, I have simply saved lots of money with them over the years. And this deal came at just the right time for me!

    Thank you Isabelle!

Since there's no way of even squeezing the display out of them I'm looking for discounts, as I don't believe I'm upgrading that much for not choosing a DV6 pavilion instead or a configurable Vaio, after all I'll be giving up on a Office+Acrobat bargain by Sony, plus blu-ray. Oh well I guess even in a laptop we can't have everything. ;)

Lots of people have and they were very happy. There is an ebay seller and I cannot remember the user name but he takes your order and configures the laptop to your specs and sends it to you.

If you go to the "Fight for the Envy 14 radiance display" thread there is a poster on page 8 called "e14" that gives some links and some tips on where you can find some radiance display laptops.

I'm contemplating ebay but I want to contact the seller to be sure and as it stands I haven't found a way to email him/her.

But by all means try. It's a shame because you just know there some radiance envys out there in need of a good home! ;)

A quick good news story for anyone concerned with sending their Envy away to HP UK for service. My laptop (purchased in the the US) arrived with a dead left speaker. As I live in London I contacted HP UK and after the customary diagnostic steps (update driver/BIOS) they agreed that it was a hardware issue. A courier was sent to pick up the laptop from my house and I received text updates from the HP Repair Centre when my laptop arrived and when it was dispatched back to me. It arrived back after 7 working days with the left speaker working and no sign of any damage to the body. Thoroughly happy with the service from HP UK :)

Did you have to buy a UK warranty after buying it in the US to get it repaired for free here?

No didn't have to purchase any extra warranty, I think HP has a worldwide warranty for the first 12 months? At least that's what I read that in another thread anyway. In any case, HP UK didn't ask or didn't care where the laptop was purchased, presumably they can find that out with the serial number though.

Hi, I'm just wondering. Would you have any idea how much of customs I would have to pay for an Envy14 purchased online in the states for $1750 (shipping costs included)?

    Thanks

I was lucky enough to have a friend in the US bring it over for me. Correct me if I'm wrong but you would usually have to pay VAT on top of the value of the item as marked on the delivered parcel. However, I've never really imported from the US before so I'm probably not the best person to ask for advice.

Hey guys Dell have just released the new XPS line... I heard its supposed to compete with envy and macbook pro line... was really close to buying an envy 14 when I came across this and realised it was waaay cheaper with excellent specs

Dell XPS 15 Laptop Details | Dell UK

theres supposed to be a 14" and 17" as well which is available in the US.. but so far only the 15" is out in the UK.

Looks great indeed and the price is awesome.

The problem is that for those wanting a 14" it may be too large (for me it is for sure) and I doubt the 14" will be as cheap as the 15" one.

I would wait before ordering one. the whole studio xps 16 series have suffered massive heating issues and throttling. Wait until some users get hold of them and put it through its paces.

2.6kg is a bit more than the Envy. The display is the same low res one as in HP. Prices seem to be good so far. We will see how they price it in the EU.

A friend of mine bought a Sony F Series the same time I bought my Envy and now he is offering me to trade my Envy for his F Series with money for me, but I would never do that :)

    Hi there,

Just bought today the laptop and I'm planning in doing the same operation as you did. Please note that I never saw the laptop in real life so bear with me concerning the following questions.

However, I'm a bit hesitant on what HD caddy to buy. I suppose first that it should be chrome finish and 9.5mm high (the caddy), according to the newmodeus.com site ( OBHD Matrix 3 080510 Q)
However, I've seen in the French HP site that the laptop does have a slot-in DVD drive. Does your mod concerns the slot-in model and if so, should I take the non-faceplate model from newmodeus.com or another one? Do you mind asking you what model did you took?

Sorry about all these questions but I would like to make sure that I've all the material ready at the same time in order to do the mods. Thanks a lot!

I have found HP UK customer service very good (I know, I was shocked too). My Envy 14 was purchased in the US and arrived with a dead left speaker. I live in the UK and HP picked up the laptop and replaced the speaker without any hassles at all. Had the laptop back in 8 working days IIRC. I didn't speak to anyone on the phone, just used the email support to get it fixed but they were very prompt and responsive.

I bought an Envy 15 in the US and HP in the UK replaced the screen, with no issues. Collected it on a wednesday and returned it to me on Thursday the week after.

For UK Envy owners who have bought their PCs in the US: concerning the AC power adaptor do I only have to buy a plug adaptor for the socket or do I need like a transformer as well?

    Thanks

No need to buy a new transformer, just one of those clover leaf power cables (not sure of the technical name) with a UK plug.

If anyone has linked this up to a 2560 x 1600 30" external monitor could they confirm for me that it this specific laptop will run one at full resolution please.

I read the thread and know in theory mini-displayport should support this resolution on an external monitor but also know not all laptops with mini-displayport do actually do this in real life.

Before I drop 666.66 660ml bottles of Stella (at todays Sainsburys exchange rate) on this thing, which is a lot for me, I'd love to know it will actually do what I need it to. Otherwise I may as well get a netbook and nip to the shop :D

    Hi all,

Would love to get your opinions on whether I should get an Envy 14 (1195ea beats edition) full uk spec from the uk, i.e. with the 1366 x 768 screen or would it be better to get an Elitebook 8440p (with either the i7-620M or 640M, i know neither of these are quad core) and the 1600 x 900 screen.

I wish i could get the full radiance infinity screen, but it seems like it's just not an option, so could anyone say which is the best screen between the envy and the elitebook?

    Thanks

Haven't seen the elite books screen but the 1366 is that bad. I sent mine back to get the radiance but only because it was an option. . I had the beats and it is a wonderful computer and i was very happy with it. I had the i5-580 and it was more than enough for anything i threw at it. The beats is one sexy computer. I'd say beats. You can always get an external monitor.

It's been a while since anyone has spoken about this laptop. I'm trying to decided between the Envy 14 and 13inch Macbook Pro. Like most people, I love the design of the MBP, but I prefer Windows 7 to the Mac OS. So if I get a Macbook I'll probably just load Windows 7 on it using Bootcamp.

I'm confused about the different models of Envy 14 there are. HP are selling the HP Envy 14-1190ea for £749, but then Khodtech is selling the Envy 14-1196ea Beats Edition for £713. Whats the difference between all these models?

Is the Envy as powerful as a MBP, or should I just pay the extra money for a Macbook Pro?

    thanks for the help.

    Hello,
was wondering if there is any HP specialised shop in London. I wanted to try out envy 14 but cannot find it anywhere in electronics shops.

    Help would be much appreciated.

Ordered the caddy and SSD for my Envy 14 and will be replacing the HDD with SSD and putting my HDD into the ODD bay.

Do you have any advice on what I should look out for when I have it done and start working with the SSD+HDD?
