Well, I voted that my i5-520m didn't have the problem of the fans turning on and off constantly but after over a week I just noticed it DOES have the problem. I usually have TV or music on so I never noticed until I was in a quiet room. I have a 2nd Envy 14 and that has the fan problem as well. I wonder if anyone really has a perfect fan because I didn't notice it since the fans don't get loud under normal usage. I can't change my vote but 2 i5-520ms with fan problem here.

I have a core i5 420M with 4gb of RAM 1DIMM and My fan doesnt seem to turn off completly...however it has never reached a very high speed and thus is very silent. The porocessor buzzing also is silent/non-existent. My computer also does not get hot even after running for 4 hours straight on Discrete Graphics!!

Fan is always on even though I disabled fan 'always on' mode.
    It's pretty loud...
    I have a core 450m w/ 4gb and 500gb HD

Get it replaced. The first one I got had the exact same problem but after I exchanged it at Best Buy (where I bought it) this one doesn't have any problems. I love it.

I noticed that with the first one I got that the CPU was constantly spiking past 20% even when I'm not doing anything (completely idle). This was true even after clean install. I also noticed that the fan becomes very loud when the CPU goes past 20%, probably because the CPU was (for some reason) idling at 55C?? With my current one the fan is not audible until like...60% (I don't even know for sure, certainly not 20%). The CPU idles at around 28C (I live in the basement so it's cool. My workplace also has the AC on TOO high).

I don't think it's faulty. I noticed that when my Envy is on A/C mode, the fan is ALWAYS on, no matter what settings you have. However, if you're on battery mode and you let your envy idle for a while, then fan does stop unless it hits load (this is assuming you have "fan always on" OFF in the BIOS)

So we can't turn off the fan when we plug in A/C mode? I hope there is a solution to turn off the fan... :(

Is it possible to turn off the fan by using SpeedFan software?
My cpu runs about 20C, but the fan is still on..

This fan issue is making my laptop un-usalbe.

Has anyone had any luch with Tech Support?

It really seems like this is some setting or BIOS issue.

I haven't voted because it depends for me. If I'm on Power Saving mode with fans set to Active, the fans stay at a constant slow speed which aren't loud unless your in a completly silent environment. Sometimes they speed up for a few minutes but are still quiet.
However. If I switch it to High Performance, the fans cycle from very slow, to slow every few seconds which is annoying in a quiet environment. If I have the high performance GPU enabled, the fans cycle for a while and then stay at a constant slow speed which is ok. If I have it on Intel Graphics they always cycle.
It seems to me that HP have stuffed up. The fans should not turn on and off every few seconds. The fans could always be on very slow and then the next speed should kick in at about 35 degrees maybe, and stay on until the temps reach something like 32 degrees.
Oh and when the fans go on full blast they are EXTREMLY loud. My dell studio is no where near as loud full blast and the fans hardly ever turn on. I'm also hoping that after a clean install the fans will be more constant.

I dont mind if the fan were to be on constantly. That's alot better than intermittently. The single fan in my dv2610 is on the entire time. The only time it was intermittent was when I first bought it, and then HP decided to release a BIOS update which kept it on permanently to combat heating issues. Worked out quite nicely actually, cuz it's still running strong :p

Yeh I don't mind if the fans are on all the time but as long as they are at a constant speed. Mine skip around when I use the power saving option which is annoying. Hopefully a BIOS update will fix it soon.

"i5-520M: Yes, my fan remains silent."

What's the definition of "silent" in this case? Does it mean it is not annoyingly loud or does it mean it is really turned off or not audible?

Did anyone try SpeedFan to reduce fan noise?

Wow.. This fan is really loud.. Distracting... My fan is full speed all the time even my laptop is idle and CPU temp is about 20C..

Do u think clean win 7 install may help? I have to return my envy if there is no solution to turn off the fan... Grrrrrr..

Clean won't work. It's a bios thing that controls the fan. Notebook Hardware Control NHC might be able to help, if it still exists.

You say a clean install won't work but before I clean installed, my fans were constantly changing speed from slow to medium even when only browsing the internet. After a clean install, on power saving option and Intel GPU the fan is off most of the time (fans always on disabled in BIOS), sometimes they turn on slow for 10 minutes. On high performance option, the fans stay on slow the whole time, they don't change speed and they are very quiet so I can't hear them even with just a dishwasher running in the background.
So I would say a clean install does help. Not saying it will help you tho.

Well my point in asking was if it's running at a slow speed then everyone has that problem but some people say it runs fast at all times.

People with fans constantly changing speed, trust me, do a clean install, it will help HEAPS. I disabled fans always on in BIOS and the fans aren't even on when I'm on power saving mode.

This is prolly true, cuz when I clean installed win7 into my dv2610, the fans got quieter, even though they were still on constantly like they were in Vista and XP. S'all good though.

    I acatully have a DV6z SE w/ N620.

After I ordred and before I recieved the system, they quit offering at SE w/ N620 (dual core). They only offer quad core and I wanted a faster dual core vs. slower quad core.

So I either had to change my requirement or opt for repair. I really wanted the SE w/ a N620.

My i5-450 does the cycling thing also, every few seconds, from off to low or maybe medium, not sure which. Cooresponds with my cpu temps being 34-36 and 32-33. I've got the fans "always off" in the bios settings, and set to "passive" in the advanced power settings. Very nice when the fans are actually off, but the cycling sucks. Maybe if the cpu temps could be lowered a few degrees all would be well. Anyone try using a good thermal paste under the cpu, like Artic Silver? Is the cpu even accessable to try this?

For everyone whose fans DON'T cycle, I wonder if your cpu temps are reguarly staying below 35 (when the fans activate), so that your fans never come on?

I didn't notice my fans were cycling even though I heard about it here until I went into a dead silent room. It definitely should be fixable via a future BIOS but we need more people to report the issue to HP. I'm sure more people here have the cycling fans than realize it.

I have it. I can see my GPU's temperature going above and below 38C in GPU-Z and the fan starting and stopping as a result. The fix would be dead simple on HP's part.

It's only annoying when in a totally quiet room, fortunately.

What's been the feedback from HP about the fan when people call? I forgot to mention it yesterday when I called in about my SSD.

I'll remember to mention it today when they follow up. Seems like a pretty straightforward description "I turned off enable fan always on and it still never turns off...fix it!". :)

My dv2610 used to have a "cycling" fan. The BIOS update changed that though. It's on constantly now, even in idle. Doesnt matter though, cuz it's working. Under load, it's like a wd-40'd hairdryer. Loud like a 60gb ps3 loud, which isn't that loud anyway. If your comp ever gets louder than a ps3 does, then I say you should kindaworry. If equally loud though, then it's fine, and you're just being picky.

According to HP website, Fixes an issue where the Battery icon incorrectly shows both the main battery and the battery slice in a charging state after unplugging and then re-plugging in the battery slice.

I was hoping that new BIOS fixes CPU whine and fan noise..

Doubt the whine can be fixed in software. They wouldn't be replacing fan assemblies otherwise.

What I want is unlocked voltages on the GPU!

Definitely. A BIOS update could unlock all voltages, fan speeds, bus speeds, temperature states... If they wanted to give that to us.

I'm still amazed that most laptop companies give us so little control over a machine we wholly own.

I thought BIOS updates were released from the company themselves...so I don't find any reason for an update to void the warranty.

BIOS updates indeed wouldn't void the warranty. Unofficial BIOS would probably void it.

If HP releases a new BIOS, it's obvious that it'll be supported by them.

I have not. I've purchased two now (an i3 and i5) and both have the problem. I agree with what others have been saying here - this will probably take a BIOS tweak to fix it. The ball is in HP's court...unless there's a large outcry they will probably do nothing. I've personally been thinking about getting a high quality microphone to record the behavior, post it YouTube, and hope that it goes viral....

I just got my Envy and its fan is continously on at a low speed, clearly audible in a silent room. Is it supposed to be like that or is that something that can be fixed by a replacement? Its louder than my old dv6000 laptop when ideling. Temps when on battery seems to be around 41-45 degrees celsius. CPU is 450 version, 6gb ram and 500 gb hd.
