Just another idea, is there any chance to set the temperature the fan starts higher?
-
The fan is controlled in the BIOS.
The real fix would be for HP to do a better fan control: make the fan start at X and cool down the laptop until X-Y, with Y say bigger than 5C. That way instead of starting at X and stopping at X-1, it'll only start every once in a while (and if X is high enough, it might never start for anything but CPU/GPU intensive apps, which would be ideal).
Of course this requires HP to get off their asses and do something about it. *sigh* -
F02 i believe
Just watching videos on youtube makes the pc fans speed up to "step 2?" which is quite loud and the temps on the cpu is around 57 degrees at that point.
Im thinking about returning it the way it is now. -
-
where can I check the bios version?
-
-
So what are ppl with audible fan noise doing with their laptops? Did anyone return and get one that doesnt have fans running when doing surfing / typing? CPU is still staying around 45ish degrees while just typing.
-
Just received my envy 14. Fan is always on low while surfing the web. No on and off fans. Fan is on high when playing games. the thing i dont like is the vibration on the right palm side... probably because of the fan. does anyone else have this ?

I got my laptop back from repair on Friday. They replaced my fan assembly. From what I can tell, the fan is consistently low while web browsing and ramps up during SC2. It appears that they fixed the unreasonable noise when idle. I'm happy for now. Hopefully it stays this way. Also the CPU whine is a lot less noticeable.
-
Thanks to C-states, P-states, power gating, and other features, the power usage (and heat output) of modern CPUs is dramatically different at idle compared with under load. Since the thermal diode is right in the CPU it can pick up the change very quickly.
If you use a program like Real Temp you can see the immediate and dramatic temperature changes due to load. One second of full usage can easily cause a 10C increase in temperature.
The key is to design a control scheme that has enough hysteresis to avoid bouncing between fan speeds. Lenovo does a very good job of this with ThinkPads. The downside of such a system is that it often runs the fan too fast for too long after a prolonged high load, but the advantage is that it doesn't bounce between speeds which is far more annoying. The fact that the cooling system on my T400 is pretty quiet even at full speed helps as well. -
Hi all,
This is a helpful thread, but I'm curious how many of you have completely silent laptops vs. laptops with the fan on but on a rather quiet (the room has to be pretty silent to hear it) and consistent level (it doesn't surge or turn on/off).
I've had my Envy for about a week, and have spent much of yesterday and today updating it, optmizing it, etc. I just noticed today that the fan has been on a lot. First day I've noticed it, so I'm guessing it's new. I've updated BIOS and it's still on. I'm not running any programs other than IE.
Is constant but soft fan use normal? Did I get a lemon?
Thanks for your opinions.

Did you turn of the "always on" option for the fan in the BIOS? Mine do shut off for short periods of time but turn back on as most if not everyone's do. If you read around you will see it also depends on whether or not you're using the integrated graphics or ATI, on power or not, etc.
-
I guess there isn't any fix or anything?
I tried to look at my temps earlier to see if there was maybe something getting very hot but (according to SpeedFan) my CPU was sitting at a comfy 15C and 16C (core 1 and 2). I couldn't check my graphics cards though. -
someone daring could try this:
HP Pavilion BIOS hack for silencing the fan | Nobody was Born with Linux Knowledge -
My fans always pretty loud, is this a bios/driver problem or is this simply standard operation? I don't think anything's defective, at least I hope not. Yet the right system fan runs at a constant dull roar, not that bad, but not what i'd expect. Any way to correct this? Nvm I guess... read the thread/get the picture..
On second listening I think cpu wine might be the real culprit. Its a 450M. -
-
Yeah, thats odd.. My hdd makes a bit of noise, nothing compared to the fans though, but as far as vibrations are concerned there's nothing.. Maybe those were defective units?
-
Mine the fan is on at all time's but not loud at all it will rev up a bit every so often that's on intel video and the i7 620M not a loud laptop but not a mac ether lol.
-
does anyone find that after the HP envy wakes up from sleep, sometimes one of the fans ( or harddrives) would get really realy loud occasionally? To solve it I have to put it on sleep again and wake it up again. Really frustrating.
-
In the bios leave 'fan always: on' otherwise the fan will kick in every few second (we really need a good bios update)
Then in Windows 7 go to power management > Edit your power scheme > Advanced settings (or similar) > Processor energy management > cooling > set it either to active or passive (opposite of what you have now). Sorry I don't know the exact words in English for Windows 7 as I'm on a Dutch version. -
My sisters HP from 4 years ago has a fan that runs quieter than this one.
Because of the Whine and Fan noise, I'm going to RMA this one. -
well mine is pretty load too but its only really noticable when the room is dead silent, at night for example..
-
I contacted HP about the FAN noise and how my old HP fan makes less noise and blah blah blah. Anyways they sent me this, I havn't tried it yet but I am about to, I'll report back with the news, Hopefully this fixes some issues.
-
Also, is it possible to take the fans out and replace them with ball bearing silent fans? ... maybe just the fan itself not the whole fan casing?
-
Are you sure it's the fan you are hearing? I'm mostly hearing the HDD. I have a Seegate 7200RPM 500GB which is basicly the same as your Momentum, but then without the 4GB SSD. -
It happens with my TOshiba 320GB that it came with.
Is there a quiter HDD out there? I don't think I am ready to spend $ on an SSD yet. -
Since upgrading to F.13, I now notice that my fan cycles on and off much more than it did before. Is anyone else encountering this?
-
-
My envy fan seems to be much more sensitive. I'm starting to think it is spinning up based on CPU load than on internal heat. It will turn on for like two seconds, then turn back off, then back on when I'm loading a page, then back off when it's done.
That said, I can only hear it when I'm in a totally quiet room (which is not often). And I can set the fan to run all the time in the BIOS (I think- it has an option for passive vs active, and right now it's on passive. I assume that on active it would run all the time). I can also change from power saving mode to higher energy using mode and it will just run quietly and consistently.
It's not so much the loudness of the fan (it isn't loud) as it is the cycling of the fan. -

-
I feel kinda dumb for asking this but how do I know if its my HDD or the fan making the noise?
-
-
The Envy was my first laptop so I just took the fan noise as typical for laptops.
However, work has just lent me a 4 year old dell laptop and despite being horrible in almost everyway it stays pretty much silent. You really have to put your ear to it to hear something.
I know that with music on you cant really hear the Envy 14 but a lot of the time i want to work without music and the noise is quite distracting. I think i'd be embarrased to use it in a library.
I almost think it's worse than my old desktop because even though it is quieter than that. Your head is much closer to the Envy and so it seems louder.
I understand the fan coming on for playing games or other activities but for just web browsing it's unacceptable in my opinion. -
My i7 Envy 14 Beats Edition is extremely quiet when doing day-to-day tasks like email, internet browsing, word processing, listening to music and watching movies. I have the "fan always on" option disabled in the bios.
When gaming, however, the fan turns on and is quite loud. When I finished Singularity (finally!) the other day the fan was so loud I had to turn up my external speakers to hear anything going on in the game. Out of curiosity I tried using the laptop speakers at max volume and they were almost completely drowned out. As soon as I quit the game and went back to Windows, the fan was nearly inaudible. Is the fan normally this loud when gaming? -
Mine is also loud when gaming so I guess thats normal but I usually use external speakers. I dont find it as annoying as when i'm trying to work because it's more annoying in a quiet room.
I did try turn off the fan in the BIOS but it just constantly cycles on every 20secs anyway which is just as annoying. -
didnt have this issue with my dv6. got my envy today, plugged it in and left it and bam same issue. it's idle with nothing running and fan revs up for 5 seconds and then dies down........
You expect the fan to ramp up during gaming but not during idle..... -
I found this thread looking into the possibility to control the cooling system of the envy. So far the thread-starter was able to interact with the fans of the envy 17 and is working on the envy 14. This is still a big maybe but it's the only project, tool or whatever that actually might work.

so does anyone know if this fan noise problem has been fixed yet or if it will ever be fixed? I do not want to buy a laptop that makes large fan noise when I am just web browsing or typing a document. I would expect high fan noise when I play games or use 3D programs but not when the laptop is idle.

Just got my envy a few days ago, i5-580m, and I have an ongoing rattling noise that goes with the fan. Not too bad if I have music on but still....
I dont know if I want to exchange, because the chances that I'll get a perfect Envy sound low (according to you guys), no whine, no physical problems, no touchpad problems. Just the loudness.... Dunno what to do :S
-
Just got my customized envy beats 14 with corei7-840, 8GB ram - the fan is running crazy even though i am not running any games or high load applications
Is this a problem ? should i return the laptop or is everybody with the same specs is having the same problem ? -
-
I've installed all the drivers including BIOS update, network drivers etc. Did a fresh install (through recovery - restored it to factory image).
The fan noise is not crazy high but its still audible. May be this is normal for a laptop with such specs. But right now it seems more consistent. Not going high and low every other second.
Does anybody else here has a core i7-840 processor with 8GB memory ? If yes, are you also experiencing the same issue ? -
This, unfortunately presents another issue... whenever I begin gaming or run applications which stress the CPU, the i7 automatically clocks itself down to ~500Mhz when temperatures reach ~75°C rather than kicking the fan up a notch. This introduces major drops in performance and games look like still pictures until the temperature returns to the low 70s (which means this whole process cycles every couple of minutes)
I'm planning on installing Windows 7 Ultimate and doing a fresh install seems like what everyone seems to be recommending.
@archangel84
What kind of temperatures are you getting?
@Everyone
Is fan speed regulation restricted by the Envy 14 hardware or software?
Do you think the mastermind behind SpeedFan, Alfredo Milani Comparetti, can find a solution? -
I am playing a youtube song now and now the cores are from 38-43 degrees centigrade. I haven't played any games on this laptop yet.
I think constant humming is still okay since the specs are so high. I don't think we can expect this laptop to be totally silent. We will have to live with it. I think people who don't have any fan noise at all don't have i7 processors.
What I did was reinstall the factory image (recovery) and then install all the drivers and updates from hp's website.
HP Support & Drivers
You will have to put in your product name. Mine was xb110AV which corresponds to hp envy beats 14T. You can get the product name by pressing ESC when the system is starting up and then going into System Information.
Now the fan doesn't go crazy when the system is idle. It can still speed up when I am installing something e.g, MS Office etc. But I think it would be better if we get some kind of official response from HP about this fan issue.
