mines came in like that. i returned it.

the logo led panel did not move around.
i tryed shaking it and pushing on the logo, hoping to get the logo led panel to move back in place but the panel was pretty much stuck.

im pretty sure the logos led panels are glued on.

im guessing foxxon(or what ever manufactuer) are pushing the display lids out so fast to a point were the glue do not dry completely causing some logo led panel to shift during the laptop production.

    that what i think :)

That seemed to help with the static a little bit, but not the microphone. I tested it using my headphone cord extension too. The headphones work, but the line-in doesn't, using the same plug. If using the mic, I have to pull it out just a little.

Yes, 21 days for each order...I'm on #3 and final. Make sure they give you the price of the original since prices have gone up plus a discount for their faults.

If you return it then you'll get a newly built notebook, although you're gambling for more flaws. If you wait then you'll have to deal with warranty and get a refurbished model.

ok, another thing, I had to re-download the synaptics drivers for some reason, and now the trackpad works, but the light on the trackpad indicating that it's off is on, yet I can still use my trackpad...

    anyone else have this problem?

I'm still getting random crashes while playing Modern Warfare or Modern Warfare 2. What gives? Is anyone else experiencing this? Better yet, with these specific games?

I didn't find any answers through search. Is there a way to reconfigure the hotkeys? For example, making it so that pressing F5 gives you F5 and pressing fn + F5 turns the backlit keyboard on and off.

I have a BIG problem thats really annoying me.

Everytime I use video calling on Skype, it works for a while but then it basically shuts down my network card. The wireless icon gets a big red X over it and I am no longer able to use the internet. The only way to fix it is to restart.

Now, I've had TWO different Envys and both had the same problem. Also, I used the stock HP bloatware on the first Envy, and this one I did a clean install on.

Makes me think its the drivers...anyone found a fix for this yet?

Can anyone with a slice battery please confirm the following:
    • Attach the slice battery and lock both sliders on the bottom
    • Plug in the AC power cable
    • Click the battery icon on the the bottom right to confirm that the Slice battery is present
    • (here comes the big one) Lift the computer by the *sides* (not by the bottom and not touching any part of the slice battery) and while the computer is suspened, press the battery icon again

If yours is like mine it says NOT PRESENT. This is a huge problem and I'll tell you why. I was working on my laptop away from my AC cable but had my Slice handy. Once my envy reached critical battery level I popped on the Slice and everything was back to normal. However, I slightly adjusted the laptop from side to side a few times and boom: blank screen. Power off, since the only power source was the slice as this point. Not good.

Please, everyone who reads this try it out. Make sure you reclick the battery icon when you are holding the laptop by its sides (you may need to stretch those thumbs a bit). I'm thinking this can't be an issue with just mine...

I have just tried this and did not see any problems. I shook the laptop alot, and the slice battery does not move at all, it is very secure.

I didn't loose any connection, reclicked and shooke about 5 times.

Well that's good to hear. Except I don't feel mine move either. It's probably to minuscule (but sufficient) to notice. Are you sure when you picked it up you weren't actually holding the slice battery?

There's an intel wireless driver that came out just a few days after the Envy 14's release. It should be on the first page of the owner's lounge.

Would any one recommend the i7 or the i5 processor for envy 14? Also is the graphic card for the quad underclocked? Or is the dual and the quad the same?

go to the bios (spam f10 as the computer boots) and turn off action keys.

that'll make f5 be f5 and fn+f5 be turn on the backlit keyboard, etc

i5-450m is probably best cost-performance ratio if you want a dual core. The i5-520m has a few extra features that you can find on the intel site (though they will probably not matter for most users).

Some info should be on the first page of the owners lounge

Hi guys, first time poster but i love the site. Anyway im in a bit of a dilemma. Im all set to order my envy 14 for college (go pitt!), but im really unsure of what upgrades to the base configuration are necessary. What drew me to then envy were the awesome aesthetics and amazing performance, but im just confused as what upgrades are worth purchasing. I know most people here go for the radiance display, but to be honest that doesnt matter too much to me. Plus I figure that without it, battery performance would be better, and gaming performance would be better. Also i wanted to know how much the i5 processor bump matters, and if the ssd really improves the battery life that much, since battery life is the only thing that concerns me. One last thing is that, should I be concerned at all anymore with the cpu whine, bad quality control, and bad trackpad that i have read so much about?

Thanks guys so much for the help, and sorry for the lengthy post!

I got the 450m, 4GB ram, 500GB hdd, and the radiance display. I purchased this laptop for college and will exceed any of my needs. Love the laptop.

Advice-if you upgrade anything, make it the radiance display. It's simply amazing.

You're not going to see much difference in CPU performance unless you're upgrading to quad core i7s. Quad core i7 = better multithreaded performance, but horrible clockspeed and battery life. Upgrading from i3-370 to i5-450 or i5-520 will not make a noticeable difference except in benchmarks.

And, definitely get the radiance display. 1366x768 is horrible for general use.

If you have the money, definitely get the SSD unless you can't live with the low storage capacity. SSDs only negligably improve battery life, but they are very fast...

EDIT: Also, don't worry about those people who got lemons. The chance of getting a faulty Envy 14 is very low.

It's not. CPU isn't, but the GPU is underclocked and it's at 450MHz (std: 550MHz).

The chance of getting an Envy 14 with CPU whine is actually pretty high...but I guess you don't consider that faulty. I had to RMA mine because of the terrible whine. Just imagine one of those mosquito ringtones, except it doesn't end and comes from your computer.

So I got my Envy yesterday. Very excited, everythings perfect. But I'm planning on doing a clean install just like a lot of people. Had a few quick questions that I was wondering if someone could help me out with.

The only folder I need to make a copy of is SWSetup right? Does this have all the basic drivers that I'll need? (At least before I update them right?)

This is the only thing that I can really remember that I need to pay attention to when I do a clean install. Otherwise everything is following the Win 7 reinstall guide posted around here right?

P.S. I've been trying to keep up on the Owners thread so I'd know what to do when the time came and I finally got mine, but it's hard when it was +20 pages a day.

I could be wrong, but I believe there is no difference in battery life with the display options.

I would go for the I5 just for the extra performance. Battery life shouldn't be significantly impacted. An I7 on the other hand will greatly change the battery life.

SDD will help with battery life

Anyone else having trouble with the mute light working? I installed the HP MediaSmart Menu as suggested, but my light remains off when muting.

It doesn't seem to me like MediaSmart Menu is even running in the first place, honestly...

Anyone else really, really loving their Envy 14? It's been nothing but good to me so far. I don't find the trackpad to be that bad either, with the latest Synaptics drivers.

    Nothing...

I attempted to reinstall the MediaSmart SmartMenu again, but all I get after running the install executable is a command prompt that runs a couple commands and then closes.

I get that with both the executable from the SWSetup folder or the one directly from HP's Envy 14 driver page.

Is there some kind of prerequisite software from HP I need beforehand?

    Hey vinneh!

I experienced the exact same problem and I have simply given up. The mic simply doesn't work correctly. I can get it to work by pulling it out a little bit, but then there will be a lot of distortion and thats just not acceptable. I tried different drivers, different programs but nothing helped. My headset is a Sennheiser which works flawlessly on a different PC and notebook.

I called HP today and they promised to send me a new unit within 2 days and pick the other one up at my place. I hope this will fix the problem.

Sometimes when I move the lid of my HP Envy 14 backwards or forwards (in a closing or opening motion), there is an area about the size of a quarter in the middle of the screen that ripples as if I were pushing it with my finger. I'm debating as to whether or not I should get my Envy replaced. Any thoughts?

1333MHz will work also just to let you know, it will just run at 1066MHz, just letting you know as sometimes 1333MHz maybe cheaper than 1066MHz

Can you let me know if the new laptop has the same issue?

Edit 1: I have found a possible solution. Talking to HP Support, they informed me that the port is a 4-connector port that is meant for TRRS connectors (think cell phone headset, it carries audio in and out at once). If your mic is a 3-conductor connector it may not be sitting properly in the port. I am looking for an adapter online right now.

Edit 2: I found this on newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...=iphone_audio_splitter-_-26-172-013-_-Product

I've ordered it. If it works, I'll come back and post.

    1. Make a copy of SWSetup to DVDs or USB drive
    2. Make HP Recovery Disks using HP's Recovery Manager. Download/burn a W7 disk if necessary.
    3. Reboot your PC, change boot order so that your DVD drive boots first. If you have issues booting up your W7 disk, try toggling hardware virtualization in your BIOS. I'm not sure why (probably a bug in the BIOS), but for me, I have to toggle this each time I want boot from W7 disk.
    4. Install W7, proceed with on screen instructions.
    5. Install your drivers from SWSetup's driver folder.
    6. Install your programs
    7. Good to go!

Thanks a bunch. Everything seemed to work. Only thing is when I changed the volume using the FN keys a volume meter would show up on my screen. Now though nothing shows up, but the volume is still changing. Anybody know what driver/file that does that?

And I already know about the 3RVX program, but the one I'm referring to was already preinstalled when I got the notebook.

Edit: Oh, and first impressions: I'm loving everything about it. Only thing I that bothers me is when I type my thumb/wrist grazes the touchpad and the mouse moves. Very nitpicky I know. I installed touchfreeze but it doesnt seem to work. =(

no one's been able to figure out how to setup the old volume OSD again.

    same with the capslock OSD.

...though both of those OSDs pulled you out of a fullscreen game when displayed so it's not like either of them are good.

I got the OSD working before but I removed it because it created a new startup exe file. Besides, I didn't really care about the OSD either lol. If you want the OSD, install HP MediaSmart Menu.
