Don't worry about a notebook cooler, it doesn't need one. Palm rests never get above warm, and the left one is almost always cold. Even while gaming temps never reach extreme temps. It's good to go without notebook cooler.

If you use HDMI to output to HDTV via HDMI, can you achieve a 1080p resolution? When I did it it seemed I was limited to 1600 by 900.

You should be able to. When attempting to change the resolution, did you make sure that you selected display "2" at the top? Also, what did you set the "multiple displays" setting to? Duplicate might max the resolution at the lowest of the displayed monitors -- in this case 1600x900.

you also gotta right click on that second display and configure it and stuff to use 1080p (1080p60 or 1080p24 if your tv is 120hz)

Yes. The GPU should be almost 50% faster going by notebookcheck, and the CPU is definitely an upgrade.

No. But there is the chance that it will become bricked if the update fails. Always run BIOS updates as admin and make sure all programs are closed down (nothing on the task bar).

I posted this in the owners thread also but I'm having some trouble trying to get the Bluetooth working properly. I did a clean install and everything else is working just fine except the Bluetooth. Some how I managed to disable it to where it doesn't even show up in device manager. When I try to install the drivers from the Drivers thread it fails and says that no bluetooth device was detected.

Anybody have any ideas because I haven't been able to figure it out. Thanks in advance.

yeah the drivers aren't detecting it.

install 'em. turn on wireless, hope it works.

if it doesn't auto-detect, leave wireless on and reboot.

I ended up doing something like that to get it to detect it.

Yeah I tried what you said and still no dice. Even if there aren't any drivers installed, the bluetooth is still at least supposed to show up in device manager under network adapters correct?

    no.

    it's in deep sleep mode.

this happens with the realtek ethernet too sometimes on a clean install/reinstall/whatever

it's turned off til you get it to turn on for half a sec to make it show up and then it realizes "oh crap, drivers" and then it works properly

I'm having a problem with my mic input jack. If I push the connector all the way into the jack, I get no sound and it doesn't show up in the beats audio cp. If I pull it out just a little bit, the audio works but I get static whenever the CPU does anything (opening a window, using the trackpad, anything).

Anyone else run into weird problems like this?

The port works fine as a headphone jack, but not as a mic.

I just recently ordered an Envy 14 and was concerned by its size. I'll be using it for college and I'm afraid it might be too big of a luggage to carry it from class to class. I've been using Dell XPS M1530, so I'm sure the Envy will be lighter than my XPS, but it might not be light enough. How is the portability to you guys?

I use to carry around a 15.6" just fine. It was a little heavy though. The Envy 14 is much more manageable than my old laptop. If you managed to carry around your m1530 around then the Envy should not be a problem at all IMO

    simpleton question:

Any tips on how to keep my login information for forums and websites? For example on this forum w/ last pc I would stay logged in forever. Now I'm having to re-enter my info for every site after restarting, even when checking the "stay logged in" box. I tried having Norton & Firefox remember my passwords, which just pre-populates the fields for me.

Not sure where exactly I need to adjust the settings? Norton or Firefox?

On Firefox I have unchecked the boxes to delete my Active Logins, Forms & Search History, and Cache when closing FF.

My envy's harddrive failed the test in bios so hp is sending me a replacement harddrive
I want to know how I can get it back to how it was out of the box.
I created the recovery disc but is there anything else I need?
    Thanks

Almost forgot to say that the hp rep I was exchanging emails with had suggested I use a killdisk program to completely clear the harddrive/partitions before I tried using the recovery discs so all the files on my envy are gone. All I have is a windows 7 disc and the recovery disc. So links to anything that is necessary to restore my envy is appreciated. (Ex I think I've read here that the swsetup folder is important?)

simple communications probably is the intel management enhancement interface, one of the misc1-misc4 things.

otherwise it's the hp protect hdd stuff (not in your drivers folder of swsetup but in a different folder)

I'm eying up buying an Envy 14 to replace my old 13" Viao since I can get a pretty deep discount via an HP colleauge. If I order the mobile broadband option, how does the service activation work?

I already have an AT&T PCMCIA data card, so hoping I can just pop in the SIM from that card and call AT&T to pair the SIM with the new cellular EIN. Then I wouldn't have to upgrade to a new USB or ExpressCard device.

    Thanks,
    Mike

Trying to do a clean install to Win7 Ultimate x64 in hopes of faster/bloatware-free laptop:
*I've read the 1st help pg of HP Envy 14 thread but a question about partitions. I see two partitions: Local Drive and SYSTEM. (I have gotten rid of RECOVERY and HP TOOLS)

    1. Is the SYSTEM partition something I should get rid of when installing the new Win 7 ultimate?

    2. What's on it? (I did some research and it is something NO ONE should touch)

I deleted it on my computer and I have no issues thus far, but I was scared for a little bit after I deleted it so I did some research.

From what I understand the SYSTEM partition is a ~200mb partition that windows automatically creates when installing. It seems that it holds system files to recover the OS in case of a corruption.

I'm not in any way recommending that you delete it as well...it would probably be safer just to have there considering it is only 200mb.

If you want to read some more theres a few links on the first page: system partition 200mb - Google Search

Sometimes on startup(w7-home) my computer will lockup when getting to startup screen. My background will show and some icons, but then it freezes. (AIM wont open etc) Only way to fix it, is to CTRL/ALT/DEL and log off and log back in. Any ideas?

Tried to update my ATI driver (to ATI 10.7) as suggested in the first page of the Envy 14 Owners Lounge. During installation the screen went black. Waited a couple of minutes and then restarted it, the screen is black again. Restarted again, and it's the same story. What should I do?

while booting hit f8 a lot. Go to safe mode.

in safe mode go do a system restore to before you tried installing the 10.7 drivers (it should have made a system restore before installing the drivers but if not you ought to have one or two hiding out before hand)

edit to do a system restore just type in system restore in that run box and follow the instructions

I don't think you waited long enough. It takes several minutes. Look at the hard drive activity light on the side to judge when it's finished.

Alternatively, I found it easier to use remote desktop on another computer (mstsc.exe /console) to remote into the envy and watch the installation after the screen blackout.

I'm one of the unfortunate people that received a messed up HP logo. This is the only fault that I've found so far with my Envy. Besides this cosmetic issue, there's nothing wrong with the notebook. If you look at the description of this youtube video, he mentions that the messed up backlight actually moves around when he shakes the notebook.

Can anyone else with a messed up logo reproduce that? I'm debating whether to RMA this notebook. If this is the only issue, then I may just suck it up and keep the notebook. But I'm worried that if the backlight moves around when the notebook is shaken, that it'll be an issue a year down the road. If this backlight is supposed to be fasten down somehow, I'm wondering what else is loose due to poor quality control.

Is this something I should be worried about?

I just opened mine. The Quick Start guide first tells me to fully charge the battery externally before turning it on and to wait until the battery light is white. But it is white...it's just flashing.

Should I just go ahead and just turn it on already? What are the different functions of that light?

somewhere in the synaptics options you can mess around with it. you get there by going through the mouse options in control panel or right clicking on the synaptics icon in your system tray and going to pointing device properties

I'd set palm check to maximum and sensitivity to 80ish% (heavy touch is all the way to right, 80ish% is about one to one and a half ticks away from heavy touch)
