How long did you wait at "expanding Windows files" It takes about 5-10 minutes for it to get off 0%. It's normal.

Revo's a sack of crap - I used it to start uninstalling the Mediasmart stuff after a minimal restore, and allowed it to wipe all of the recommended registry entries and files (after all, there were thousands, why would I go through every one of them?). After one or two items were removed, this procedure broke about half of Windows, including Windows Installer and a bunch of other things.

The solution was to restore to a point before I had used Revo to uninstall anything (fortunately, it creates system restore points). I ended up uninstalling all of the MediaSmart stuff through the Windows Uninstaller instead, and everything worked out peachy.

Another question that's been answered already elsewhere:

I created my recovery discs already, but I'd like to backup the partition to an external drive as well. My closest attempt was to copy the partition from My Computer into the destination partition on my external drive, but it came up with one final folder that needed administrator permission to transfer, without offering me any way to grant that permission (some earlier ones gave me the option, but the last folder only offered me retry, skip, or cancel). Even if I could get that copy/paste job to work with everything going through, would that work? Otherwise, is there some (preferably free) way to image it to the destination?

There is a hidden HP folder under C: Local Drive!

Is it save to delete it if I'm not using any of HP softwares?

    Try an overnight.. lol

Gave up on clean install so just went on Revo and nuked everything.
Which I screwed up the first time around (messed up Windows Installer) so was more careful the 2nd time.

Now tryin to install 10.7a ATI drivers. Screen black for about 20 minutes now, Drive Light faintly blinking, not sure when to start freakign out

I read and read and see pictures... but my most important question is not answered.

I use a laptop mostly on my lap. On my legs. Rarely on a desk. And I am not a fan of laptops that become overheated. The laptop should be cool enough to be okay while wearing thin shorts or pajamas. This might not be important to others, but it's crucial to me.

So I ask you, fair users of HP Envy 14... is this a lap friendly laptop or not?

Bonus if anyone has any thoughts about how heavy (or not) this feels using several hours on one's legs.

    Thank you!

well if it's been twenty minutes try restarting.

if it works, yay. if not.

    system restore back to 10.3

if you disabled system restore...oh you poor poor fool.

My comment won't be satisfying but here are my thoughts regarding your question:

For me, I think Envy 14 is not a lap-friendly laptop. Whenever I run anything graphics-intensive programs like games, or Adobe CS5, the two vents (right and top-center) get very hot. Now, this is beyond the temperatures you might have experienced before. But for me, after like half an hour of running anything graphics-intensive, I couldn't keep my hand on either spots for more than a second. I usually use it on my desk so I might not have felt how hot it gets when using on my lap.

About the heaviness, I've had an HP dm4t (14", 4.4 lbs) and Envy 14 is definitely heavier than that. I felt the difference right away. But it's not too bad. You could definitely use it on your legs. I can promise you that it won't crush your bones by having it on your lap.

Nonetheless, this is the best laptop I have ever owned so far.

I haven't used system restore at all. I just uninstalled the ATI drivers, then reinstalled the 10.3 from swsetup, then installed 10.7a once 10.7 failed on me. Worked fine. Now if you can't get a screen at all after a reboot, well, then you'll need system restore or do a full new clean install.

You can also get a pad/rest/however you want to call it, be it actively cooled or just cushy, and have that rest between your lap and the underside of your laptop. I have one for where I use my laptop on my lap the most and it's big enough to hold the mouse, too. Raises the laptop a bit which is good, insulates me from the heat and makes it all comfy ;)

Everywhere external on my laptop is extremely bearable with regards to heat -- even while playing a game. I forget the testing conditions and exact temps, but the notebookcheck Envy 14 review showed temps ~40C maximum on the chassis.

While browsing on battery...the whole laptop besides the top-right corner is about room temperature. The top-right is slightly warmer, but still entirely bearable IMO. I think notebookcheck stated the external temps around ~40C maximum.

It depends what you'll be doing while the laptop is on, and of course your heat threshold. I am very sensitive to heat, and have no issues with the heat on this laptop laptop whatsoever. Regardless, if you have an issue there is always the lapdesk!

That's the thing, I'm not very sensitive to heat, and this sucker is hot. My nerves must have been burned from a couple years of burger flipping in high school. It is now way 40C. At least 50C if not higher. But like I said, if it's hot there, then the heatsink is at least doing its job.

    Hey.

I have been trying for hours to get this dvd out of my envy 14 but I cant get it out! I tried everything, safe mode, bios, etc. Still nothing.

I just got this laptop and I put in the dvd for first time to create recovery disk and when the recovery disk was done, it would not come out of the dvd drive.

When I press eject button it just makes some noise and then it stops and does nothing.

I can read the DVD perfectly on laptop though, but does not eject.

Please help on how I can get this dvd out.

You needed the swsetup folder at minimum. Includes all drivers and utils you'd need.

It's part of mediasmart. SO you'd have to uninstall media smart to gte rid of it.

ok boys, just got my envy yesterday and have to say i'm loving it! I have none of the problems ive read on the forums (ie: fan noise, cpu whine, hp logo, build quality, or trackpad issues). I think this is the nicest keyboard i have ever used, but that being said i have encountered a problem. During use yesterday, just surfing the internet, all of a sudden my hdd started making funny noises, then my screen went black, and idk what happened. Then the bios screen loaded up and i told it to boot. Then a few more funny noises and it put me into a boot options screen. Followed by this i told it to boot again, at which point the screen went black, and the words "no bootable drive came up" i believe. Then today i fired it up and it seemed fine. , should i contact hp?

Also on a separate note, the very top of my screen is cut off, it is off centered maybe a cm, has anyone else seen this problem?
    Thanks to everyone

Been using my Envy for a couple weeks now just for nominal tasks until I decide to start installing the software I use and transfer over my files from my old laptop. I've contemplated the clean Win 7 install, although am cautious that I could run in to problems (as I seem to always do with computers). Read the guides and everything, but am curious what are the true comprehensive results and enhancements just a regular consumer out of the box user would see. Of course bloatware is annoying, but some can be removed without a clean install. Thoughts? Recommendations?

Do any of you have an issue with the seam in the casing where the bottom of the palm rest meets the base?

In mine, I have a noticeable gap in this seam that begins at about the halfway point and continues towards the bottom right corner.

I can fit the edge of a business card inside this seam. Here's a picture of the gap:

it seems like most people, including myself, have at least a slight gap there. some look worse than others. yours honestly doesnt look bad at all. especially compared to some of the envy 17s i saw.

    blame the bluetooth radio.

as long as it doesn't bother you and isn't a ginormous gap you shouldn't worry about it (think they all have a small seam in the middle 'cause of the bluetooth or something..which is housed in that white square that faces you)

So... as long as I exchange for the exact spec'd machine, Bing will still honor the cashback? If so, does a new 60 day waiting period begin when the old one is received & the new one is started? & what about the credit card charge? Do they use the existing charge or credit & recharge? If the latter, is there any crossover where you have both charges coexisting?

I would email bing with these questions so you have a hard copy of the response. Someone on the boards could say yes to all of the above questions but that's not going to help you if there's some kind of problem down the line.

Having no HDMI in port can make things troublesome.

Exactly what inputs does your TV have? I thought virtually all HDTVs had at least one HDMI port...

Coaxial and S-Video are the only inputs...starving college student here with a handmedown late 90's TV set. How troublesome are we talking?
    I almost fell for this:
    Amazon.com: HDMI to 3 RCA + VGA Cable M/M 1.8ft/6ft: Electronics
But got wise after reading the reviews (boy there sure are some smooth operators out there).
    Thanks for the help.

I'm running 46 proceses, O% CPU, and 35% memory. I've gotten rid of HP bloats and running 5 startup items (4 intel, synaptics).
Is this normal? I figured 4GB of RAM would be enough but 35% memory seems a bit too much when nothing is running.
Any way to reduce memory usage?

I think you will need to get an HDMI to VGA adapter and a separate VGA to S-Video adapter.

    that's normal.

it's windows 7 doing it's thing (pre-fetching some programs that you use often so they load up fast)

it automatically frees up that ram if you use a program that needs it (like photoshop or video editing or a game or whatever)

Are you sure they don't work? Try plugging in various USB devices like a mouse and see if it works. Otherwise, you might have to RMA.

So, just got my envy. It has one half-dead pixel (red is completely black, while the others somewhat show up) near the center to the right. I am debating on whether I should RMA this to get it fixed, what do you guys think?

You could try battery out, A/C out and holding down the power button for 30secs.

If that's a no go, then you could try the hard way.
In device manager under USB serial bus controllers, uninstall all the USB root hub entries (do not check delete box), then reboot. Windows will reinstall them all. It may take windows up to 15-20mins to reinstall them all.

The kind of device you require costs up to a few hundred quid because it has to convert digital (HDMI) to analogue(S-video, RCA audio L/R). And it will look pretty dodgy in the process. In other words like dog doo-doo.

So basically, you're SOL mate. :(
